6 Whisky-Tasting Experiences Across Scotland - AFAR

"Founded in 1824 in Speyside, this storied distillery is part of the region’s Malt Whisky Trail and is known for producing some of Scotland’s lightest, sweetest malts. Visitors can learn about traditional production and enjoy drams drawn straight from the cask, sampling smooth, complex whiskies with caramel and fruity notes characteristic of the area." - AFAR

We are not whisky drinkers, but we really enjoyed the tour at Glenlivet Distillery. It was a very interesting and informative tour, and we left with a deeper appreciation of the science and art behind a great single malt Scotch Whisky. Our tour was conducted by Amber, and she did a fantastic job in explaining all the details clearly. A special mention too for Emma, who kindly allowed us to join the tour even when we were late to arrive.

During my visit to Scotland I wanted to have a whiskey tasting experience and I was thrilled to see the Glenlivet distillery was couple ours away from the place I stayed as Glenlivet is one of my favorite whiskeys. The day I had booked I was running late and called them and asked can they accommodate me and my friends for a later tour. Even it was clearly said they would not be able to reschedule for later time, in the booking details, they told me they will try their best to include me in a later tour as I mentioned I was visiting all the way from New York. Now for the tour I should mention, Amber was really welcoming, knowledgeable and very pleasant the way she interact with guests. Thanks Amber. The Distillery itself sits in a nice estate with beautiful surroundings. Inside the building is modern with a nice waiting area a bar and a store. Although they could improve the variety of merch they have in the store, they have decent offerings.

We had an amazing time at The Glenlivet Distillery, Ross was an outstanding guide! He was incredibly knowledgeable, engaging, and made the whole experience both educational and fun. The history, the behind-the-scenes look at the whisky-making process, and of course, the tasting, absolutely top-notch. If you're visiting Speyside, this tour is a must. Thanks, Ross!

A truly stunning and modern distillery. The atmosphere was incredibly welcoming. Before our tour even began, we happily spent time by the crackling fireplace, enjoying the ambiance and the pre-tour anticipation. The tour guides knowledge of the distillery's history was impressive, and they delivered it with such charm and wit, weaving in fascinating anecdotes that brought the past to life. Their storytelling ability truly elevated the experience beyond a simple tour; it felt more like an engaging conversation with a passionate expert. Beyond the informative and entertaining tour itself, the location is simply breathtaking. The distillery's modern architecture is striking, and the surrounding area offers picturesque views. For those interested, a short walk away sits a magnificent castle – a perfect addition to a day already filled with history and charm. We spent some time exploring it before heading back to the distillery to enjoy a tasting of their incredible spirits. I highly recommend setting aside ample time to fully appreciate both the distillery and the castle.

Glenlivet - Ross was our guide Great personality, a wealth of knowledge, and consistent enthusiasm. He really caters to the crowd. He made one of the best experiences into the vacation of a lifetime. The facility was, comfortable, beautiful, and well maintained.

Incredible grounds with an excellent tour. Good tastings at the end and an okay selection at the store. My only real complaint was the tour was absolutely a presentation and less of a genuine look at the distilling.

I had an amazing experience visiting the Glenlivet Distillery, and a big part of that was thanks to Kim. She explained everything so clearly and made the entire tour engaging and informative. Her passion and knowledge about the distillery and whisky-making process really stood out. It was by far one of the best distillery tours I've been on. Thank you, Kim, for making it so memorable!

Google
Great tour and the shop sells bottles only available for purchase at the distillery. Purchased a very limited quantity single barrel bottle that our tour guide recommended and got it at a good price.

Yelp
Our first distillery stop in Scotland, and it set the bar *high*! We joined a tour and got the full Glenlivet experience--learning fun whiskey facts, admiring the pristine facility, and, of course, tasting some incredible drams. Our guide was an absolute gem--super knowledgeable with just the right amount of humor to keep things engaging. We sampled the Glenlivet 12 and 15 (both smooth and delicious) and learned that the Glenlivet 13 is a Taiwan exclusive--who knew? Our tour group was a fun mix of folks from America, Britain, and Germany, making the experience even livelier. Everything was well-organized, clean, and welcoming--definitely a fantastic way to kick off our whiskey journey. If this was just the beginning, we knew we were in for a great trip!

Yelp
This place set the bar high for distillery tours and tasting experiences. Parking was easy and very close to the entrance. We had the first tour of the day, and they opened on schedule. Be sure to schedule in advance (about 2 months) because the tours sell out and we did see some people turned away as a result. Our tour guide was very engaging and knowledgeable. His enthusiasm was contagious and he made the experience fun! Not only did we learn the history of Glenlivet, but also learned more about whisky distillation process in general. This wasn't our first distillery tour, but it was the one by which we compared the others that followed. The tour is entirely indoors, with the exception of moving to one of the storehouses, which is great given the unpredictable weather. The tour didn't feel like an hour and a half, the time flew by. When it was over we were brought back to the gift shop and by then my husband had decided which of the bottles to purchase. We compared prices there with what they were at home and decided on a bottle that was a distillery exclusive. We did visit during their 200 year anniversary as well, so there were some extra special options. This tour is a must if you're a whisky lover.

Yelp
Great tour with amazing history. Our guide Hannah was very knowledge about the distilling process and answered questions the group had. We got to do a tasting of the 200 year anniversary 12 year, 14 year and 18 year. Ended up bottling my own bottle of 18 year cask strength whisky to take home.

Yelp
The distillery is GORGEOUS. The tasting area, also gorgeous. But there were a few kinks in the works here. Firstly, we arrived not long after opening time to the tasting room, we were the only customers. There were at least three employees around but it took many minutes and several requests for anyone to help us. Sigh. Plus, they were all wearing TShirts and honestly, didnt match at all with the upscale vibe of the decor and ambiance. Once we did get someone, they weren't keen on doing anything but bringing us what we ordered. No descriptions, no upsells, nada. Despite the basic service, we did enjoy most of what we had selected. We especially liked that the selections on the menu were annotated if they weren't available for purchase. It's so sad to fall in love and not be able to buy a bottle you loved. We all fell madly in love with the Nadurra, and it was not marked as unavailable. Woohoo! Except....when we went to buy one, it was not available. Damn. We enjoyed the decor and the whisky, but Glenlivet left a lot to be desired.

Yelp
Second stop on my whiskey tour.  Tour included 3 tasting samples in the really nice corporate space on the second floor.  The host for the tasting was very knowledgeable.  This tasting had a nice layout with samples poured out already with a glass disc on top.  Also water and a  pippet were available.  It was a nice learning experience to taste the whiskey before and after a couple of drops of water were added. They have a little cafe.  The tour had an option of ordering a sandwich at extra cost.  There is an option to bring your own lunch.  I ordered food which included a bag lunch (sandwich, chips, cookie) and drink.  It was not a bad deal and was sufficient for a quick lunch. The tour did not include a tour of the facilities.  After one tour, it was ok not to visit the distillery or warehouse.

Yelp
They decided to close the bar early today because one person called off sick. Poorly managed situation, many of us upset for having made a long drive only to be turned around at the door.

Yelp
I've been on a lot of distillery tours in Scotland and America and I can honestly say this was the most disappointing of my visits. Living in the moment is great, but having pictures to bring home to friends and family (and post on this site) can be helpful in sharing the story. Pictures are not allowed on tour. It's not like they're doing something outrageously different than everyone else! Thankfully we did get a single tasting at the end but it didn't live up to the hype. The gift shop was mostly limited to alcohol (obviously) but I felt they could have had more of a merchandise selection (coats that cost almost £200 don't count.)

Yelp
Definitely one of the more crowded distilleries, but then again Glenlivet is an extremely popular brand. My reason for three stars are these: 1. They don't allow ANY pictures while on the guided tour, which I thought was unusual. All the other distillery tours I had been on would allow pictures in all but a few select rooms. 2. Our tour guide wasn't particularly friendly. Maybe we caught her on a bad day, but it kind of put a damper on the tour. That said, they're selection of Whisky was choice.

Yelp
An excellent tour and a great place to start the Whisky Trail. The complementary dram at the end of the tour was fantastic... enjoyed the Nadurra and picked up a bottle as soon as I got back to the States...

Yelp
We had a very nice guide but compared to other distilleries we where missing the tasting part. They have a very nice shop and café, but pricy too.

Yelp
A great place to visit when you're in the Highlands - it was quite a trek for us to get there but the surrounding countryside more than made up for it. The distillery is huge, gleaming and brand-new looking. The tour was affordable and led by a nice and informed young guide. The only bummer was the no picture rule during the tour but that's my biggest complaint. We were offered a free dram of whisky at the end - a choice of the 12 year, 15 year or 18 year. I thought this was fantastic since I'd only expect to get the offering of the more common (and less expensive) 12 year. It was a great way to sample up the price chain. They also offer a special taste for 3 euro of a bottle they pull out of their cellar. During our tour it was 30 year old Glenlivet - which was phenomenal. I'd never get a chance to sample 30 year at such an affordable price. Their gift shop is nice, albeit expensive. And their cafe is a great idea but we did NOT like our sandwiches.

Yelp
Very similar tour as many of the other distilleries, except it was free! Nice thing is that you don't need a reservation, but it has a big, corporate feel.

Yelp
I'm not a whiskey fan, but my husband sure is, and it was really interesting to learn the distilling process, and have a taste - all for free! Nice cafe and shop, we got a lot of souvenirs for the family.

Yelp
I wa given a bottle of Glenlivet 25 as a gift I can not tell you how disappointed I am with it. The first thing was when I went to open it the cork crumbled, before I could try it I had to usea a strainer. The biggest disappointment was the taste it was almost unconsumable, bitter with a terrible aftertaste. I contacted Glenlivet and after three emails and giving them all the required paperwork they never responded. I guess after you purchase their product there is NO customer care. I have enjoyed Glenlivtet products in the past but after this experience I will never purchase any of their products again. I will stay withJohnny Walker Blue for half the price and triple the quality!
