On the Grid : The Sheaf

"This pub is definitely a Double Bay institution. Offering drinks and delicious but unpretentious food, it caters for all ages and tastes. Always changing their décor and keeping it fresh, this local place is the preferred hang out for business meetings, lunch with friends, drinks after work and dinner with the kids. If you are lucky enough to be around for Melbourne Cup this place is always pumping for the race that stops the nation. Lots of high heels, miniskirts and fascinators. Make sure you get there before the main race; things don’t look that pretty afterwards…" - CoMa

Had an awesome Saturday night at The Golden Sheaf in Double Bay! The vibe was electric with great live music, delicious food, and a buzzing crowd. Perfect spot for drinks with friends or a fun night out. Staff were friendly and the atmosphere was top-notch. Highly recommend checking it out if you’re in the area!

Finished work early and went for lunch. You can see it’s a nice place to be just my timing was off for hanging out. Had a chicken parmigiana. The chicken was cooked nicely and the tomato base store bought but used wisely. The cheese was a good choice nice mozzarella with a sprinkle of cheddar on top which made you interested in the dish. Great move. The chips were thick cut so they held their heat ( plate wasn’t pre warmed) but nice. The salad was a bit plain. I had no seasoning/ dressing on my salad but others had just a little olive oil. 4 out of five plates cleaned.

Music was better than half the clubs in sydney. Got some cocktails pretty late into the night, was a 10 - 15min wait after ordering but worth every second. Great place, will definitely be going back!

Always a pleasure booking an event at Solotel venues thanks to Brendan and the crew. It is no wonder many flock to the nightlife of the nation's highest earning income postcode, known for its Wednesdays vibes. The Sheaf boasts such a diverse range of seating and bar areas from the communal courtyard, sports bar, dancing hall, and the upstairs Canopy Bar is not to be missed whilst overlooking the courtyard. The bands downstairs were extremely impressive and performed awesome renditions of ABBA and other classics.

If you are after good, no-frills comfort food, you can’t go wrong with a classic pub meal, especially a steak and chips. Sure, it might not be the most innovative dish on the menu, but sometimes, you just want something hearty and satisfying and a good pub steak always hits the spot. The steak itself is often a solid choice. You can expect it to be cooked just the way you like it (rare to well-done) and the cuts, while not exactly fine dining material, are usually decent. It’s nothing fancy, but for the price, it’s definitely a satisfying meal. A juicy, well-seasoned steak with a crispy, golden crust is always a win.

I was there on a Wednesday and Mel was working at the bar, she is the sweetest person I have ever been served by and she’s always up for a chat. She’s so genuine and has a gorgeous smile and is always happy to help. Absolute ray of sunshine

Yelp
Great food and service! Very nice waiters Great for family dinners because of large booths! But not cheap! Try it out!

Yelp
Went here for their publicized 2023 City2Surf after party and had what could have been an otherwise fun night ruined by aggressive bouncers tossing members of our group at even the slighted alleged sign of inebriation. Clearly it was because the runners were there for too long and we were being pushed out to make way for other patrons. I will not be giving this establishment my business and would recommend C2S runners in future years looking for a good party to avoid this place.

Yelp
Always great food, always fresh. The service is great , you go to the counter, order and go sit down the waiter will bring it to you. Great outdoor sitting area and in the evening, love the sound of the birds in the trees all around. If you're visiting Sydney from out of town, this place is all Aussie.

Yelp
This place is awesome, especially for lunch and on weekdays -- gets a bit nightclubby on weekends. The food is surprisingly good pub food, there's a very nice outdoor area for food and drinks, and an indoor space for rainy days. I come here all the time, love it!

Yelp
Okay, this is a pretty big place, and has a huge beer garden (which is basically non-smoking, though that probably has a lot to do with the laws that anything else), and the décor is also pretty retro (especially the old beer posters you see in a number of the Sydney pubs) but the atmosphere really didn't do it for me. Normally this would actually be the type of pub that I really like, and the staff were pretty friendly as well, however the sports bar seemed to be more of a tradie bar than your typical Inner Suburbs Sydney pub. I personally don't want to knock it too much, however I am unlikely to come back, even if I lived nearby.

Yelp
The Golden Sheaf had the looks of an old man style pub from the front but as you head towards the back opens out onto that old man's trendy son or daughter style pub. The beer garden is very modern with a nice wooden patio style deck. The beer garden offers lots of seating as well as a nice place to go for fancy pub style grub. The menu offers some classics like fish and chips as well as grilled steaks and a few daily and weekly specials. I ordered a steak and it was pretty good I must admit. Cooked the way I liked and good sized with a potato cake that had a unique flavouring combining some cheese and onions inside. Everyone else's dishes looked equally as good. Definitely somewhere I would return to with friends for a drink or some food.

Yelp
Its the place to be if you're in the area. Spacious with lots of seating and tables. Food is great too! Try the Eton mess for dessert! ah YUM! (Hopefully its still on the menu) Great for catch ups with friends, birthday functions. They have 5 bar areas last time i checked. 3 are downstairs and 2 are upstairs. They have the pokie bar and then the tavern bar (where the buck hunter and pool tables are located), then the courtyard bar near the kitchen area. Friday and Saturday nights can get crowded so be warned, get there early to nab a table! Yes i have been here a couple times and am a fan!

Yelp
Once upon a time this bar used to be an understated local which my friends and I would head to regularly head to on a Wednesday or Saturday night - my my how things have changed. The Sheaf got a makeover and its chilled atmosphere has been replaced by a too cool for school. i have mixed feelings because in many ways the "new" Sheaf is much better than the old one - there's excellent food, gorgeous decor and a wonderful array of entertainment..... but here's why I'm a little but unsure of my feelings.... I guess its because the great thing about you local pub is simply heading there in your Havianas, grabbing a quick drink, convo and heading back home.... you could easily do this at "Old Sheaf" but not "New Sheaf".... "New Sheaf" requires you line up for 30 minutes on a Saturday night only to be surrounded by hundred of people. It's super packed and ubercool - but it's not really my thing. I preferred the daggy days - it felt like there was as a lot more heart and soul....as opposed to pretty boys and girls. So if you feel like being trendy, stop by, but if you're into a more low key place to chill I suggest finding somewhere else...

Yelp
Came here for a work lunch and got the Angus burger and chips with garlicky aioli. Now I'm a big burger fan so I was really looking forward to this monster of a burger that was sitting in front of me that cost me $20 The bun was a little sweet but was ok but the meat was over cooked and had no flavour. The juiciness that I was looking forward to never came. It was dry and lacked favour in pretty much every way. The chips that it came with were half decent but the so called garlic aioli was just thick Mayo that's it. I ordered 2 extra tubs because I'm a big sauce fan but man after one of them I was done and feeling very sick from my Mayo overload. To top it off, being a non smoker and sitting partially inside we were constantly coughing up our lungs with clouds of second hand smoke constantly being blown in our face while we eat! I HATE THAT! Especially when people are eating. Thankfully NSW smoking laws will change July 31st and hopefully my issue will be a thing of the past. Feeeww ok rant over. The order process was typical pub with the ordering window and the numbers on the stick. Food came in normal time and waitstaff were friendly but that's about all for the positives. I'll be going down the road next time for sure!

Yelp
A long time fave for cashed up youngins on Wednesday nights, the 2009 renovation of the Sheaf transformed the once grotty mega pub into a significantly classier establishment. The upper level terrace is a good place to chill out with groups, the banquette seating and powerful mushroom heaters offering a cosy space even in Winter, while on weekends there is often a live band playing in the Back Bar area. On the food side, the bistro revamp has produced some solid dinner offerings with hiked up prices to match. The eye fillet steak with onion chutney and a rich jus was $26, but a well-cooked, moreish piece of meat very suitable for the pub surrounds. Despite the massive amount of space, this place always manages to fill up on Friday and Saturday nights. No doubt the bulk of the crowd comprises Eastern suburbs locals too lazy to hike it into town, as well as those just not ready to go home yet - the beer garden stays open until a relatively late closing time of 2am.

Yelp
Did you know Wednesday night is student night? I'd forgotten the sheer unbridled joy and freedom of partying on a Wednesday night before the seriousness of Life and Bidnizz grind you down into a grey shell-shaped human-thing trying vainly to cling onto this little ball of mud and survive until we expire with barely a whimper while leaving no sign of our passing save a few mortal progeny destined to fall prey to the same fate that befell us and our fathers before us and their fathers before them. These kids didn't have a whisker on their chins! The girls sure had some short skirts though. Or maybe that's normal and I'm getting old. The kiddies were lined up in giggling reams out the front, and to their credit the bouncers let us in without making us wait with them. The Sheaf is still a great place to drink and be social, although the exit into Kiaora Lane is ridiculous - I can go out that way, but not come back in? That makes the place a giant wind tunnel funneling human chaff from the front to the back and don't you turn around, this is one way only. So a guard made me walk allllll the way around to the front, where his fellow bouncer let me cut in line again. Swings and roundabouts.

Yelp
This place could be a star, but for a million of non-direct reasons it's not even close to that. It is a nice pub. They have nice service stuff working there. There is a lot of space and cold beer.... and, simply there is absolutely nothing great about this place. I have been there few times and there is no vibe, no class and totally wrong crowd (on so many levels, depending on a day). It makes this place blunt and not very digestible. Usually place is quite busy so I guess they don't care about taking it to another level. Golden Sheaf is a bit of wast of space.

Yelp
This is a great place for whatever your group or date is expecting. There are multiple bars, both upstairs and on the floor, lots of seating, a very open, patio feel, a spot for VIPs and almost most importantly: a huge stage for live music. The food was actually very good and well priced. We got a seat on the balcony overlooking the courtyard area to watch the Tennis Championship. There aren't too many large TV's for watching sports, but I found that was the case overall for Australia. If you want a place with more TV's that is sports oriented, go to the Sugar Mill. The bouncers did a great job of removing unwanted trouble makers in a timely manner. I will definitely come back here next time I'm in Sydney! PS the lights in the tree were also awesome!

Yelp
Is this The Oaks of the east or is The Oaks the Golden Sheaf of the lower north shore? But in decor and vibe, this place has the Oaks beat by a mile. It is a giant bar that is a mix of great outdoor space, sports bar, quieter drinking venues upstairs, and pretty decent food. This makes for a good place to meet up as there is plenty for all to enjoy. However, when a place becomes this big, it is hard for it to truly surpass expectations in any single category.

Yelp
This is strictly a parmigiana review and no other aspects of the establishment will be taken into account. This Parma immediately stuck me as a more bougie sort of meal as there was melted mozzarella and basil leafs accompanying the chicken. The size of the Parma was excellent with it being at least half the plate. The chips were also profound with enough chips for every bite of the meal and even some leftover. The salad on the other hand was poor with it only consisting of shredded red cabbage, this is not something I would expect to accompany a Parma and was one of the main downfalls of the meal. The pepper sauce was excellent with it perfectly complimenting the chicken and the chips. My main issue with this Parma Was the complete absence of ham, I found this appalling as the chicken simply lacked flavour. The cheese was placed in isolated blobs and didn't even fill half of the chicken, this contributed to the overall missing flavour. The chicken was lovely with a minor flaw of the breadcrumbs with them being far to large and hampering the parma's overall texture. Overall I am giving this Parma a 3 out of 5 stars due to the main issues of no ham, the cheese being in blobs and the lack of a substantial salad. This Parma was a pleasure to enjoy and provided me the sustenance to write this review. It was an absolute pleasure indulging in this Parma at this fine establishment would recommend simply for the experience.

Yelp
Decent pub grub but avoid Saturday nights like a hooker with an Adam's apple. The door staff/owners seem to enjoy playing "how many douche-bags can we shoehorn in tonight". Overcrowded with a-holes means it gets pushy & agro.
google avatar

Yelp
The Golden Sheaf Hotel is excellent! The atmosphere is great think the Winery with more of a pub vibe. I had the $22 Mussels and Fries - best mussels I have had and I have made it my mission in the last 6 months to try a lot of mussels. With multiple zones throughout you can find the perfect spot for the drink/meal/chat you require :)

Yelp
Nice venue, however the food is overpriced for whatv you recieve. Customer service is also quite basic. If tipping were a thing in Australia, I wouldn't have tiped.

Yelp
If you've been to The Oaks in North Sydney, then you'll know what to expect when heading here, except it's a little classier (perhaps). It's a sprawling place, with plenty of places to sit, eat, drink, watch the match on the giant screens, chat, soak up the sun, sit under the heaters; whatever you want. A location for all occasions I'd say. And the food is decent too. You order at the kitchen, and they've got a wide range. The pasta special I had was fresh and tasty and arrived quickly too. A few of the gents opted for a steak and were suitably impressed. Decent deals on the Coronas too - by the bucket.

Yelp
Great pub with an excellent atmosphere. I had the Wagyu steak with Green beans and Bearnaise sauce, was sensational. Came here on a Sunday evening and stayed for drinks which we had upstairs on the rooftop whilst listening to some great tunes spun by local DJ's.
google avatar

Bruno R.

Yelp
I'm reviewing it as a restaurant, not as a pub. The Golden Sheaf has a great Wagyu beef hamburger that goes with crunchy, delicious chips with it. When you pay $19 for a hamburger you may be worried about being hungry after eating it -which tends to happen too frequently-. That's not the case in the Golden Sheaf hotel: the quality is definitely above average, the quantity is more than enough and the price is fair for what you get. They seem to have a great variety of wines and beers, and the place itself is quite nice, with plenty of radiators outside to be warm and a good, fast service. It doesn't offer anything to qualify it as exceptional, but I'll be passing by again soon.

Yelp
I have been coming here for over 20 years. it certainly has had its ups and downs as far as food, but I had a little party last weekend and the food now is actually very enjoyable. Steaks cooked better than alot of places and the entrees are great! The back room has been renovated and looks great. Hopefully one day they will do the front sports bar.. still the same as it was! Drink prices were not too bad, just needs a few more wines to select from.

Yelp
Whenever I set foot in the Golden Sheaf my first thought is usually, "Gawd I wish I owned this place, what a goldmine." This is usually followed by one of the following thoughts: "Oh my God has anyone here made it through puberty yet?" or "Men should not wear scoop necked T-shirts", or, "Darling, sweetie, the golden rule of heels is, if you can't walk in'em, don't wear'em". Judgemental, aren't I? Actually the Sheaf has had buckets of money poured into it over the last few years and it has been money well spent- it looks fabulous. There are now something like six bars in the place and they are all, always, packed. They have free live music here and anyone that supports the local entertainment industry is alright by me. I do love being ID'd too.
google avatar

Gerard B.

Yelp
The Sheaf is legendary. It is the type of destination that has something for everyone. You have no idea of the size and scope of this place until you start exploring it. There is the typical sports bar in the front with TAB, big screens and pool table. Its when you go through to the outside section that you realise that this is no ordinary bar/pub. It is a massive space with the prefect set up of a central bar, tables and a thriving bistro. This is a meeting place for young and old and it has its own unique vibe. The food is excellent too. The steaks can certainly be compared with the best in town. If you're interested in a quieter time, venture upstairs where you can chill with friends on comfy couches or try one of the cocktail bars. It's a great function venue and whether its for live music, sports, casual get togethers or a great feed... you have to visit the Sheaf if you've never been.
google avatar

Morgan C.

Yelp
I've been going to the Sheaf since I first arrived over here and it's safe to say it's had a face lift of Joan Rivers proportions since I started going. It definitely resides in the super-pub territory now with 6 bars (I think that's right) within its confines. A regular hang out for local rugby league players, this Double Bay institution has an air of casualness about it during the day, but come Friday/Saturday night, it's all about showing off. The gym-junkies, complete with full-sleeve tattoos, wear their tightest shirts, while the girls are dressed as if they're about to hit the trendiest club in New York - in other words, they tend to forget that the Sheaf is just a pub! There's no denying that its makeover has made it more aesthetically pleasing, and if you're going for something to eat, the bistro is excellent, but if you're planning to go for a few chilled out drinks on a weekend evening, you may want to consider your options!
google avatar

Nicole A.

Yelp
Place to be for study abroad and local uni students on Wednesday nights! Lots of attractive young people, great music, and no cover. Careful of getting too drunk though, bouncers can be strict (same as all bars in Sydney). My friend asked for a song request and got kicked out. As long as you mind yourself you'll be fine, it's a great time.
google avatar

Audrey M.

Yelp
The bartenders are the meanest I've experienced in the Sydney area. Weird crowd. Over priced. Anywhere else is cooler.
google avatar

Kris B.

Yelp
The bar is fab, great smoking/ outdoor area - food was so burnt told the staff but got a snotty response, which turned out to be great advice 'then don't eat here then' - so I would recommend grabbing a bite to eat before hand - food used to be good back in the day .. Not anymore
google avatar

Julia I.

Yelp
If wall to wall of pissy 20-year olds and boozed Irish blokes trying their luck (my most recent Sheaf experience) is your thing then this is the place for you... unless you get here earlyish on a school night, snag a good posi for a bite and skedaddle before things fire up. There are myriad boozing environments to choose from in this Double Bay icon... front, back, deck, soda and sports bars, or the pick of 'em all in my opinion - outside in the expansive courtyard, provided it's not crammed with pissy 20-year olds and painful Irish blokes. The food ain't half bad. Pastas and steaks have always been the go. There's a duke box and pool tables out the front, lounges out the back, high bars in the courtyard and more of a regal loungy setting upstairs. In short, there's a seating arrangement - if you can get one - for every taste. Whatever your timing, it can seriously take, like forevaaaaa to get a drink at this establishment which has always boggled me. So head to the bar well before the end of your drink or risk dehydration.
google avatar

Lydia A.

Yelp
One of the most popular bars of this area, you wouldn't guess it from the rather tatty outside. However, when you step over the threshold you can see why people flock to it. It's spacious, with some side rooms for smaller events, a big central room with a well stocked bar, and plenty of seating. But, by far the main attraction is the very spacious and clean beer garden out the back - complete with numerous flat screen TVs for watching the rugby, patio heaters for the chilly nights, and big benches for large groups of people. There's a great atmosphere, the bar staff are friendly, and it's a great place to go and watch sport. I'll definitely be back.

Kathy S.

Yelp
I have a blood disease and have not been able to have a drink in two years. I came here last night in an attempt to celebrate a friends birthday and was not let in because I was "too drunk". My offers to walk in a straight line and to take a breathalyzer were denied. You can imagine this was frustrating for someone whose body cannot physically tolerate alcohol- and the manager and bouncers were the absolute biggest assholes about it, even when I wanted to pull up medical documents on my phone. I will absolutely never be back here- my friends too. Sheaf, you just lost a lot of business.

Luke D.

Yelp
I made a yelp account specifically for this. The manager and bouncers are among the rudest people I've ever met. I've come here sober twice and been not allowed in either time. The first time was my mistake, wearing dress shorts (which they showed zero sympathy for despite it being my 21st birthday). The second time, tonight, I walked up to the bouncer, presented my ID and it was determined without any consultation that I was too drunk even though I hadn't had a single drink. They look at you in line with your friends and determine if they like you enough to let you in. They don't respect that you've spent money to get there and just want to enjoy a night out and I will never go back again.

Michael P.

Yelp
I have always found the Golden Sheaf staff friendly and welcoming. The beer lines are always clean and the food is great. Wednesday night are a good night out, but the Sunday sessions are the best.

Kate S.

Yelp
The food here is always good and I like the outdoor atmosphere. The staff are a little too cool for school but I guess that is to be expected!
