Ever find a museum that you normally wouldn't think of visiting until you see it in a guide book? You figure, "What they hey, I'll give it a shot." The Gordon Highlander's Museum is one such place.
The Gordon Highlanders is one of the great names in Scottish history and one of the most celebrated regiments of the British Army. Currently they are serving in The Highlanders, 4th Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland. Through the ages they have served in many wars. In the 20th Century they served in WW1 and out of some 50,000 more than 27,000 were injured or killed. In WW2, they served with the British Expeditionary Force in France in 1940 and in the Far East in 1942. Many of them became prisoners of war. In the 21st Century In 2006, The Highlanders merged with Scotland's five other infantry regiments to form The Royal Regiment of Scotland.
Like many Scottish museums we visited, this one is in a historic house: St Luke's the former home of 19th-century Scottish artist, Sir George Reid. The Grant Room is the main exhibit hall. Here you can find out about the Gordon's early history as well as campaigns in South Africa, India, both World Wars, and the Cold War.
Rick enjoyed the armory with its impressive displays of weaponry and the silver and antiques. I'm a part time musician so I enjoyed the special exhibit running until November 28, 2010. Cogadh na Sith (War or Peace) : Music and The Gordon Highlanders showcasing the drums & pipes and military band of the Gordons and the major personalities behind both bands.
Sometimes it really pays to visit a place like this. You can really learn a lot by visiting a museum that's not a major tourist trap.
