"How did it strike you on arrival? This is the perfect example of a grand old Charleston house with double piazzas and a sweeping staircase in the entry hall. It still feels like a private residence because it was just that until 1998 when it was converted to an inn. From the street, its 3-story Georgian frame feels imposing. From within, you get to "play house" in an antique-filled residence formerly inhabited by the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence. The sitting parlor is the best spot for channeling nearly 260 years of history, especially after you've poured yourself a complimentary nip of sherry. Nice. What’s the crowd like?Couples of all ages, Europeans, history buffs, bridal parties. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.I splurged on the "Middleton Suite" for its marble wet bar, period antiques, and updated bathroom with separate walk-in glass shower (really I just wanted to experience the chandelier over the bathtub!). I say this because some other bathrooms appear to be dated or small (it's hard to squeeze bathrooms into an old house). The bedrooms themselves are the main event: mahogany four-poster beds with hand-tied fishnet canopies, massive doors, pine wood floors that creak for good measure, oriental rugs. Many rooms have fireplaces, as did mine, the caveat being that you can't use them unless supervised because the house is on the Historic Register. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? My room had nine-foot triple-hung windows original to the 1760 house, meaning that to access the wide piazza, you slide up three sets of enormous panes (it's easy) and walk out. This speaks to an era when houses were taxed by their number of doors, so these windows were a clever evasion. Wi-Fi is free and fully operational. I'm not sure how I would manage it, but I would steal the Collard & Collard antique grand piano in the living room (then tune it and replace its missing string). Room service: Worth it?There's no restaurant here, but the inn's first floor kitchen is busy around the clock, putting out freshly prepared breakfasts like Italian frittata or blueberry strata, then whipping up cheese and olive spreads, dips, antipasto, and deviled eggs for afternoon's wine and cheese hour. You can request breakfast delivered by tray to your room if you ask the night before. Meanwhile excellent restaurants are a quick walk away: Millers All Day, "Fast & French" a.k.a. Gaulart & Maliclet, and many more within a few city blocks. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you. There's no on-site spa (this really is just a grand old B&B) but the inn will arrange for an in-room massage with 24 hours notice. Bottom line: worth it, and why?Stay here if you crave an authentic Charleston house experience, inclusive of slightly old-school porch furniture and the occasional patch in the ceiling. The rooms are glorious throwbacks, many with 12-foot ceilings, and you can vet them all on the website. For those of you who want big bathrooms, choose your room wisely (there are some). The inn sits on the edge of Charleston's most famous historic residential district "South of Broad," so this really is a gateway for exploration." - Allston McCrady

The Governor's Inn is truly an amazing place to stay. Although I spent a little more than I usually spend on a room, I will say the Governor's Inn was worth every penny! The property is beautiful and the decor was very quaint. The room was well appointed and had everything we needed. The location was fantastic and I was very surprised how quiet it was. We stayed at the St. Michael's room which had a wonderful view of the St. Michael's Church steeple. The staff was so amazing and accommodating. Karen, Cathy and Ross were phenomenal! We will definitely be back.

We were impressed before we even arrived at the Governor's House Inn. We called on more than one occasion after making our reservations in order to ask opinions about local restaurants, places to see, etc. We spoke with Karen and Kimberly on more than one occasion and they were invaluable in helping us plan our stay in Charleston. We arrived after hours, but we had a check-in video sent to us which eliminated all guess work. Once we stepped inside we were greeted with a well lit, stunning Colonial Mansion. Tasteful classic music was playing for the guests as well as a decanter of sherry. We were speechless. We met Karen and Kimberly the next day and both were just as nice and helpful as they were in our phone calls. Everyday, the Inn has an afternoon wine/sherry/food outlay which we enjoyed each day we stayed at the Inn. Very classy mansion in a very nice neighborhood with many close by places to eat and drink. The Mansion has onsite free, safe, and plentiful parking in back away from the street. We noticed other Inns required their guests to park a block away due to inadequate parking space. Not so at the Governor's Inn. That convenient parking was extremely helpful. This mansion belonged to one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and was also host to George Washington on four evenings during his 1791 visit to Charleston. We were very impressed with the Governor's House Inn.

We found the Governor's House Inn to be a beautiful B&B conveniently located in historic Charleston. We were very impressed with the friendliness of the staff. We had a lot of fun chatting with "Q" as she showed us around and made us feel right at home. The purpose of our stay was to get married the next day at White Point Garden. On our wedding day, Tracy personally assisted us with all the little details of our day. She was awesome! She went well above and beyond to assist us as needed, including driving us blocks away for our ceremony. The inn is beautifully decorated and we enjoyed sharing in it's history.

We stayed in the "St. Michael's" room which is located on the top floor. The entire house (including our room) was incredibly charming and beautiful. Extremely well preserved and you truly felt "at home". From our room we had a view of the St. Michael's church steeple that was simply stunning, especially at night. This B&B is ideally located, right on Broad street where anything in the downtown area can be walked to, we didn't even rent a car. As for the staff, they were wonderful!!! They were extremely accommodating and always helping with planning our daily activities in any way they could - whether it was suggestions on restaurants, tours, sites or actually making reservations for us or scheduling a cab ride. Each morning the breakfast was absolutely delicious! I appreciated that they also offered alternatives if you preferred something other than the scheduled breakfast. At 4pm, there is an "afternoon tea" which includes wine, tea, coffee, and a number of sweet and savory snacks to enjoy - once again, delicious. The entire presentation for breakfast and tea was just wonderful - it all felt very "of the time" with the antique serve-ware and dishes. My husband and I just absolutely loved this place and would most definitely go back. It made our trip!!

A splendid and historic Inn. The suites were impeccably clean, well appointed with classic and comfortable furniture. The beds were comfortable, too. The owners were on property and took the family on a guided tour. They were very knowledgeable about the history of the home and Charleston. We felt like we were with family – we smoked cigars and drank aged cognac on the porch and they even prepared a special dinner for us, twice. We plan to return to the Inn very soon.

After several visits to the Charleston area, we have discovered a real gem in the Governor's House Inn. Accommodations were great and the bed was to die for. Breakfasts were not huge but exquisitely done with just enough elegantly served food to get the day started. The location was awesome as it is positioned close enough to walk to any downtown action you could ask for. The friendly and helpful staff were the crowning glory to cap off a great stay. We'll be returning to this B&B for sure.

The house and the furnishings are as beautiful as the pictures predicted. The staff was courteous, professional and welcoming. We especially enjoyed the served breakfasts and afternoon teas with the other guests . The atmosphere was very collegial and we enjoyed conversations with new friends. This was so much more pleasant than the typical impersonal, no-eye-contact breakfasts we are experience at most hotels

We came to Charleston to celebrate our 11th anniversary and decided to try a B&B for the first time. We were not disappointed! The Inn was very well taken care of and the staff was very helpful and attentive. They even asked if we would like to borrow beach chairs and an umbrella for our beach day. The breakfast each morning was delicious and we sat in the main dining room with other guests and even got to meet the owner. The owner was very helpful with recommendations to make our trip even more enjoyable. You can tell the owners love the house and city and are more than just business owners.
