3 night stay. Staff was friendly, helpful, especially Ally! Pub served great food and cold drinks. Our room, #7 was spacious…. Dated for sure. Ceiling fan worked, but no AC We had to ask for a shower curtain…towels were very thin. Plenty of hot water for a nice shower. Location is good Room price is low….but, more consideration to room basics is a must

Not sure what was wrong with our stay. It just seemed a little flat compared to all the other places we have stayed at on a honeymoon vacation to Australia All the other places acknowledged we were on a honeymoon. It doesn't look like the grand hotel took any time to consider this at all. It is a nice old pub. The food was very good. The parking is either on the road with limited parking or in a paid car park nearby.

Absolutely gorgeous old style hotel. Good value for money. Really nice spacious rooms, and loved having the double doors which opened to the large private balcony. The pub was busy but the noise did not travel to our room. We ordered food from the bistro downstairs, and everything was very tasty and well portioned. We hope to return soon.

I am in Newcastle for a trade event and the Grand Hotel was recommended for accommodation. It is an awesome gastropub, the location was fantastic, the decor cool, the atmosphere was great really friendly staff. As expected, the rooms were old school pub rooms but clean, retro and comfortable. The wine list really surprised me, it wasn't what I usually see in a pub, it was quite extensive with a great range of NSW wines on the list and by the glass! Now for my favourite part of my stay.....the food....OMG. The menu was great and almost everything was gluten free and tastes delicious, in fact it was so good I went there twice in a row. I had the Scotch Eggs both times and had the oven roasted snapper. Flavour were bang on. This will be my go to every time I am in Newcastle. Thanks for a great stay and time guys 🥂🥂🍷🍷

Accommodation review only. I booked and stayed in a 'king balcony room 4'. The bed isn't a true king, its 2 single bases and mattresses pushed together. Both single mattresses are very very soft, I personally prefer something a little firmer and supportive. Window furnishings to the balcony need replacing, they are not able to be adjusted to fully close due to broken and missing components. Plus one side is not secure to the frame causing it to fall when the balcony door is opened and closed. The shower water pressure surged between hot and cold every 3-5 seconds, it was impossible to get the water to a set temperature for comfort. The bathroom window doesn't have a lock, so the room is not entirely secure. There is no safety lock, latch or chain on the main bedroom door. The noise transference can be disruptive if an upstairs guest is heavy footed. The staff on checking in were very pleasant and helpful. The linen was clean, pillows comfortable and room bar fridge handy for my 2 night stay. Noise from downstairs bar and dinning activities were in no way disruptive, even on a Friday night.

Excellent food and service! Cute little pub with a seabreeze (not actual views). Lovely way to spend a lazy afternoon, sunshine outside or rain by the fireplace. Staff are always lovely.

Staff were so lovely and the food amazing! I would highly recommend the Grand hotel in Newcastle, it’s nice to go somewhere where you can have a lovely meal and be able to talk without too much noise in the background

Booked 6 weeks ago, King Balcony Room 7, through Booking.com. On the day of check-in I was told I wouldn't be getting the balcony room, but a small internal twin room (as a courtesy I could have a double). This was completely unsuitable, but apparently my fault as I had booked through Booking.com who had passed it to Expedia. Too late for Booking.com to refund, but owner eventually gave cash refund ($18 less than we paid). Presumably he could re-rent the room out . Being the Friday of Mother's Day weekend booking other accommodation was difficult and expensive. As locals we had been to the Grand a lot and it is a good pub, but beware, you can be bumped and dealt with unsympathetically.

Yelp
This is easily one of my favourite Newcastle pubs. It's recently been renovated and restored in keeping with its heritage. Drinks are reasonably priced the bar staff are friendly. The restaurant food ranges from reliable to amazing. It's always good. There are always different specials and you can get a schnitzel for $10. Tuesday night jazz at The Underground ($10-$15 entry) is of an exceptional standard and definitely worth doing at least once.

Yelp
Pros: Nice staff and cleanly renovated. Cons: Meals took 30 minutes, came out in a staggered way (when there are only two eating, this is awkward), chips were undercooked and from fish tasting oil, schnitzel was flavourless, beef salad was very light on the beef, couldn't order alcohol at the bistro, bar required minimum $10 spend for EFTPOS (no sign). The drinks menu only had half the drinks, so not only awkward to see selection, had to order double, then had to ask prices too. Overall: has potential, but needs to pay attention to these details to make things a smoother process for the customer. It felt like work.

Yelp
Old style pub, popular with wedding parties at the registry office or the legal staff working at the courthouse. Nice charm and a solid menu from their adjoining restaurant. It can get busy there in the evenings and they have a downstairs venue/function room. Good for a casual beer or after work drinks.

Yelp
Schnitzels here are tops, quick service at lunch means you can get back to work with time spare (if that's a good thing?) and Fridays after work you can catch the grands busy time which does include a small meat raffle. Not a pub for a late night and great to start a night. Hopefully in the near future I will try the recommended Jazz night Tuesdays.

Yelp
Amaaaaaazing place! Traveled here from California and stayed in the hotel and ate at the restaurant. The owner of the hotel Mike was such a great helpful guy! My sister and I traveled a long way to get to Australia so we were happy to have stayed in such a clean, comfy, cozy hotel. Location was perfect as it was close to more restaurants and cafe and less than a 5min walk to the beach!
