20 Places to Visit Along West Virginia's Country Roads

"Known as Project X, Project Casper, and eventually as Project Greek Island, and designed with relative luxury, this congressional fallout shelter remained a state secret until 1992. In the mid-1950s, the United States government covertly arranged to build a fallout shelter to house the entire U.S. Congress underneath the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV. Using the building of a new hotel addition—paid for by the Eisenhower administration—as a cover, the government set out to build a Congress deep beneath the ground. As part of this Faustian deal, the five-star hotel agreed that in case of nuclear war—or even just a realistic threat—the entire hotel would be commandeered by the government, hot tubs and all. A post-nuclear seat of congressional government, this was truly intended to house only the congressmen and their aids. It was not designed to accommodate their spouses or children, who would presumably have to find shelter somewhere else. To help ensure its secrecy the bunker was operated by a dummy company known as Forsythe Associates and workers on the bunker all dressed as hotel audiovisual employees. Any calls going in and out of the bunker were routed through the hotel switchboard so it looked as if they originated from and were going to the Resort. The shelter was fully equipped and among the standard bunk beds, televisions, and furniture that populate the “Graceland of Atomic Tourism,” there are a few very curious items. Among these are a special room meant for holding and calming members of Congress who can’t handle the stress, and an incinerator meant for “pathological waste,” or the Congresspeople’s irradiated bodies. A huge 100-foot radio tower installed approximately four miles away was connected to the bunker so that the congressmen could broadcast emergency messages. Completed in 1958, the shelter is no longer operative since its location was revealed in a 1992 Washington Post article. Currently, the shelter houses the offices of a data storage company, but for three decades it was fully stocked with food, furniture, and even current magazines. The shelter even had two mock chambers of Congress, complete with flags, microphones, and pictures of the founding fathers, all equipped to carry on U.S. government operations in case of nuclear war. There are now guided tours throughout the week." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The Best Hotel or Resort in Every State

"Set on 11,000 acres in the Allegheny Mountains, this resort was founded in 1778 as a cottage community but today offers falconry, kayaking, golf, and a casino. Gorgeous eye-candy rooms are extremely well appointed with antiques, floral fabrics, and black-and-white marble floors. Enjoy seafood, pasta, and Neapolitan pizzas at The Forum, or catch a mountain hot-stone massage at the spa, which uses minerals derived from the nearby sulfur springs." - CNT Editors

Wandering Lewisburg, the Coolest Small Town in West Virginia | Vogue

"It’s Sunday morning and you’re enjoying a relaxing, all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet. The light is shining through floor-to-ceiling stained glass windows and glistening on the Gone With the Wind chandelier that dangles high above your head. This regal dining room is rich with history dating back to 1858. Presidential busts and larger-than-life-size portraits hang from the walls, which once housed a hospital during World War II, though now not one square inch is spared from Dorothy Draper’s bright and bold decor. You wonder if any celebrities or royals—Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, or Prince Rainer and Princess Grace of Monaco, perhaps—ever sat in your very seat. You attempt to count the countless flamboyant “Draperized” floral wall coverings, cushions, floors, and carpets, then reflect on your weekend of firsts at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. All in a day you’ve shot sporting clays, got behind the wheel of a tricked-out off-road Jeep to explore the backcountry, toured the historical hidden bunker carved deep into the hotel’s mountainside, and soaked in your very own sulfur-spring bath." - Rachel Waldman

We have been to The Greenbrier many times - the first to experience the bunker and then fell in love with it and have been coming back since. There's something really magical about this little piece of paradise tucked into the mountains of WV that can't be explained, only felt. You're always greeted at the door with friendly smile and help with your bags. The gentleman make it so seamless when you arrive that you are in the building without a car or bags and handsfree to explore in under 2 mins usually. Check in was also super easy and they provide you with a glass of champagne now which was so decadent! We walked around and got reacquainted for some time and then checked out our room before heading down to the Twelve Oaks for drinks and a quick bite. We hit all of our Must Do's while there: Prime 44 (always so delicious), the shops, breakfast in bed, the candy store, massages, tea time, and leisure walking and exploring the property. This time, we really took a moment to enjoy the tea time entertainers and were really impressed with their talents! We have previously done the Falconry and horseback riding experiences and the bunker tour a few times, and would totally do them again if the desire struck. This is one of our most favorite places in the world and we will absolutely be back, hopefully sooner than it took us to get back this time. Some of our favorite staff members: Mike, game master for the Debunked escape room, Kathy in gentleman's wear, Anthony in the Forum bar, and Dani and Katie in the spa. You all made this stay so special to us!! Thank you for another amazing memory Greenbrier ❤️

We FINALLY visited The Greenbrier after having it on my bucket list for over 40 years. We loved it! It is so elegant and beautiful and there are so many activities available. And keep in mind we went in the dead of February which is their slowest time. The entertainment was SO good. Far better than most cruises we have been on. It’s so convenient to fly into the little Lewisburg Airport and The Greenbrier offers a shuttle for a small fee. I’m already planning my next trip back! Hopefully we will be back this summer or maybe fall as the autumn foliage looks incredible. Highly recommend the Cold War bunker tour. The history is amazing and the food was great. Don’t delay booking your visit to The Greenbrier!! Support the hard working folks in WV and have yourself a ball!

This was our tenth stay here and we enjoyed it as much as ever. It never gets old to us and we always want to go back. This time it was in the dead of winter, after the holidays, and it seemed at times that we had the place all to ourselves and that was not a bad thing. We had a very relaxing and restful time. The staff was friendly and helpful, as always, and our room was clean and comfortable and nice and warm even with the 10 degree temperatures outside. The breakfast buffet was very good and so was our meal at Prime 44 West. Yes, the place is expensive, but it has to be in order to survive. Just the maintenance and upkeep on a resort of this size would be a tremendous expense. It has 710 rooms and 11,000 acres to take care of, not to mention payroll and everyday operating expenses. The Greenbrier is truly an amazing place and an American treasure. It must be seen to be appreciated. You won’t be disappointed.

After reading the last few Trip Advisor reviews on the Greenbrier, I was very hesitant to go. After my two night experience, I can't wait to go again!||The hotel is over a hundred years old, thus one cannot expect absolute perfection. Except for a few knicks on the night stands in our room, which themselves were of good quality wood, not the plastic you find in new hotels, our room was perfect! It was large, with two bathrooms, firm mattress, huge walk-in closet, mini-bar, beautiful carpet, and unique wallpaper--all in excellent shape.|The decor fits this grand "old lady." All aspects of the hotel are clean and in great shape. The staff is top notch, and the food...the best around!||To say that the hotel is huge is an understatement, but there seems to be friendly staff around every corner who are more than willing to give directions. There is intimate seating all through the public areas. The shops were well stocked. |The Bunker Tour and history lecture are a must for anyone interested in the history of the area.||Though we enjoyed all the finely prepared meals we ate at the Greenbrier, our favorite restaurant was 44 West!|Bottom line, the Greenbrier is worth a stay!

Google
A little mixed in that it's a beautiful historic resort on a sprawling chunk of land. However, the rooms desperately needed an update. The styling wasn't colonial as much as 1960s cruise ship. The vibe is very relaxing with tons of spaces both on and around the main building to just sort of sit and enjoy. That being said, this property definitely attracts a certain clientele and created one of the few memories I have of absolutely feeling too young, too queer, too liberal... My non-white husband felt even more out of place. I would not recommend this place to your average Washingtonian - there are many other accessible resort properties that are better cultural fits or at least don't dive quite so hard into that particular vibe.

Visiting the Greenbrier was on my bucket list and I was not disappointed. I was very excited to do the bunker tour. My husband and I arrived a few hours early for the bunker tour, but we found out that our tour was canceled. We were able to get rescheduled for the next day and our tour was free. We really appreciated that! We were staying overnight anyway because it was a long drive from home. We really enjoyed exploring the resort. Everything was beautiful, especially at Christmastime. We went to afternoon tea, which was a pretty cool experience. We ordered pizza from room service. It wasn’t the best pizza we’d ever had and it was pricey. Morning coffee in the upper lobby was wonderful. Staff were friendly and helpful. Our bunker tour was really interesting. I wish you had been allowed to take photos because it was all pretty cool. Would definitely recommend the bunker tour.

Came back for our 50th and were amazed at the quality, friendliness, and all round gracious atmosphere pervading the whole Resort. The steak in the Main Dining Room was incredibly good! We've decided to celebrate every anniversary there from now on!

Google
We took family (ages 11 and 12) and three adults. We did lots of activities. Glass blowing was AWESOME and totally worth it! We took away a great momento. Ice skating was a big hit--because it is hard for us to otherwise do. The mountaineer experience was also very cool (and cold ,but worth it). As noted, the arcade is pretty small, but provides an alternative. Prime 44 is outstanding! Draper's is great (ice cream is fantastic). Biggest thing to watch for (particularly with off season) is times for restaurants/reservations. Very nicely decorated for Christmas. The decor will not be to everyone's taste (as it is very strong, but our beds were comfortable, water pressure good, etc.

Yelp
This is an amazing resort. It is an American classic that is perfect in every way. The spa is perfect and the employees are amazing.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed here for one night last month. It was...okay. The place is (mostly) beautiful and we had a really great meal in the main dining room, but the price is too steep for what it is. There was a huge stain in the middle of the floor in our room; a little crazy considering we paid over $500 for this room. The walls are paper thin (yes, I understand they can't renovate all the walls), and the window unit was incredibly noisy. The staff, however, were all very nice. We were looking forward to staying here, but ended up being disappointed. We would not stay here again.

Yelp
Highly recommend driving right past this place. First off, it's super expensive for gaudy decor, terrible service, and subpar food. I was told today that room service it not available due to having a single waiter. Ok... so I'll go to the lobby bar... but be warned... they require a jacket in the bar (highly recommended) even though there's people sitting at the bar in hoodies. I ordered my $18 wings and have to wait for 45 minutes to get them. And they were cold. Rooms are terribly appointed, old, and beat up, and they have random doors with house clean supplies all over the place. Employee uniforms are old and dingy, and not a single one of them are smiling. The AC in the room is so loud you can barely sleep, and it cuts on every 1 to 2 minutes and runs for 10. I'm sure this was a sight to behold in its day... But sadly, it has lost its sparkle... 50 Yeats ago.

Yelp
The overall 3.5 star rating for this hotel is incredibly generous. A more realistic rating is a 2 star. First, good luck with finding the hotel on Google maps -- not the hotels fault, but we drove around for 15-20 minutes trying to locate the hotel given the Google maps issues (would be nice if hotel provided a heads up that this is an issue). Second, the hotel weekend rate is $548/night + 15.5% of additional taxes and fees + $30 resort fee (which we are happy to pay for a good quality hotel), but -- given the age, low quality and how run down the hotel is -- $200-250/night would be more appropriate. Third, upon our arrival, the door man, Mike, was incredible apathetic, dismissive and unwelcoming. He is clearly a "last resort" hire as he had an "it's not my job" attitude -- we felt he was truly inconvenienced when we showed up at the hotel. I've never been able to understand why people like him take jobs that are required to interact with the public when they are so disinterested or incapable of interacting positively with the public. Fourth, upon entering the hotel, the first thing we immediately noticed was the age and low quality of the carpets, wall paper, and many other aspects that make it immediately clear that this hotel's best days are far behind it. The hotel may be historic, but it is just tired and old (and we've seen a lot of historic hotels that are incredible well-kept and modernized). Fifth, as we walked up to the room, there was a big pile of trash sitting outside of our room (see picture). This appeared to be food-related trash left out from the residents next door which is understandable, but -- based on the look and smell, our guess was that this trash had been sitting out for quite awhile. Sixth, once we entered the room, we quickly took note of the air conditioning in room is a "room unit" AC device (versus central air) that is very old and very, very loud (see picture). Add that to the abnormally loud noises throughout the night created by doors slamming and toilets flushing in other rooms, and it is next to impossible to get a good night of sleep at this hotel. Seventh, the furniture is old and aging and -- as a result -- is in disrepair (see picture). We tried to keep a sense of humor by questioning if the chair in the picture was a relic from the days when the hotel first opened. :) Eighth, we thought Arlene (front desk manager) was very pleasant and understanding when sharing the issues about Mike (front door manager) and some issues we dealt with regarding the delivery of our bags (i.e., our bags were never delivered to our room but -- instead -- were parked in a storage room where my husband had to go downstairs to retrieve after realizing they were not going to be delivered to our room) and the parking of our car (the valet "lost our keys" and couldn't find them after an extensive search but -- fortunately -- he later realized that our car had never been parked in the first place so it was still outside the hotel front door unlocked with the keys inside), but Stephanie (another front desk manager) was unresponsive (we are still awaiting a call back from her). I normally post positive ratings and shy away from posting negative ratings, but this hotel is -- in a word -- AWFUL especially when you consider the extraordinary "gap" between the incredibly high price and the incredibly low quality and age of the hotel. We were really hoping for and expecting a far better experience (this was our first time visiting West Virginia). We were scheduled to stay for 3 nights and 4 days, but -- given the number and variety of issues that we experience shortly after arriving, we checked out and wound up staying at a better hotel in Beckley (are you ready for this? We wound up staying at a Courtyard by Marriott which was -- shockingly -- much better from a quality and price ratio perspective and amazing service). I'm giving the hotel a 2 star (and I consider that a very generous rating). Net, don't stay here -- it's too expensive and the quality is just not on par with a hotel that charges this much.

Katy K.

Yelp
We are currently staying at the Greenbrier Resort. Tonight we went the gobbler buffet. At check out we were told that an automatic 22% gratuity is added to the bill. Really? For a Buffett? The waitress brought us two glasses of cheap wine and filled up the water glasses. $65 tip!!! $21 for a glass of wine? 37% is taxes. So $400 for two people which started out at 125 per person. We are staying 3 more nights. Not happy we chose this resort for our vacation.

Chloe D.

Yelp
Do not valet your car at the Greenbrier. During my stay, the valet lost the keys to my rental car. This resulted in over $800 in charges from the rental company for roadside assistance, key replacement, and extra rental days. While the Greenbrier reimbursed me for the key replacement, they declined to cover the remaining costs, citing insurance coverage I did not purchase. I verified with my rental company that no additional insurance was applied to my rental. As someone who hosted a significant corporate event at the Greenbrier, I was shocked at how poorly this situation was handled. Despite spending a substantial amount on this event, the hotel refused to fully resolve a problem caused by their staff. This experience left me questioning their commitment to guest satisfaction and professionalism. Losing car keys entirely is a significant failure of service (especially for a "five star resort") and I cannot recommend trusting them with a vehicle or booking an event there.

B K.

Yelp
The Greenbrier has a charming concept, but it's outdated and lacking in cleanliness. Our first room had a dead mouse in the nightstand drawer, and after informing the staff, we were moved to a room with twin beds. The decor was old and uncomfortable, and everything was carpeted. The dining room felt like a time warp, with waiters in "tuxedos" who weren't friendly, making the atmosphere eerie. After the mouse incident, I couldn't bring myself to eat. The place felt like the set of a horror movie. While the activities, like Falconry, were enjoyable, the hotel desperately needs renovations. I won't return. - 2019.

Yelp
My mother is from White Sulphur and I have been coming here since I was a baby and it saddens me every time I step foot in here now. It's falling into complete disrepair. It's dark, dingy, and smells extremely musty inside. My allergies are terrible in here, which makes me wonder if there's a bunch of mold or dust in the air. The shops are going downhill, and there's hardly any merchandise in the doggy store! The bathrooms are gross and the wallpaper is falling off the walls. They need new merch, it's been the same for 10 years. Maybe it would have been better if they had auctioned off the building like they were going to last week. Maybe someone could have restored it to the glory days. They have good coffee and ice creams and jam, though! That's a plus. It's very nostalgic coming here and the employees are always very kind.

Yelp
We were at the resort a week before the Valentine's Day to explore and have a relaxing time. We took the Amtrak from DC to get here. They have shuttles from the Amtrak station to the resort. It's not that far. Takes about 5 minutes. Once we arrived at the resort, we were directed to the reception area. We were greeted a glass of champagne and some water. Checkin process was very smooth. The bedroom was very beautiful. Very comfortable beds and bathroom was nice and clean with lots of amenities. We then tried to get a reservation at their famous Asian restaurant. Unfortunately, they had one at 9 pm which is way past my dinner time. We decided to checkout the American restaurant and had nice shrimp and grits for dinner. After our dinner, we checked a card tricks show. Highly recommend it. Ask the concierge's for show recommendations. We spent first half of the next day at the spa. We worked out a bit. Gym area is very small but there's hardly anyone using it so that was good. After the workout, we swam for a bit at their beautiful swimming pool. There was a Hugh school basketball going on this weekend so there were a lot of young athletes at the pool. We then spent few hours at the spa. Spa is beautiful with a lot of amenities. Nice steam room and sauce. They have various hot springs options and massages as well. Every thing was very good and extremely relaxing. After few hours at the spa, we grabbed some sandwiches for lunch at the main lobby area. Not much for lunch. We earlier had breakfast buffet which was extraordinary. Great service as well. Between lunch and dinner, we went on a carriage ride. Carriage ride could have been longer, but it was so cold. Maybe they cut is short because of that. But the beautiful lady giving us the tour of the area was very informative and recommended is that summers are the best time to visit. For dinner, we had reserved a table at their main dinner restaurant. It's a suit & tie kinda restaurant. We had a nice 3 course dinner with some cocktails and wine. For the entree, we had seared diver scallops and rack of lamp of Persian rice. It was so good. Well, we absolutely had a great weekend getaway. Highly recommend this place!

Yelp
This was a work trip for me, came for a conference. Likely the last time I will be here, unless I have another conference here that I must attend. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous, and the fall colors were perfect. The building is beautiful, but the decor is too much. Dorothy Draper was famous and relevant in the 1940 - 1950s, but her decor currently looks busy and includes too many patterns and textures. The hotel staff was great, very kind and polite. There are several very nice stores in the hotel. I was put in one of the villas, and it was clean, the bathroom was large and clean. The water in the shower had very low pressure, though. What bothered me the most was the cost for what I got. Everything had multiple fees, including a historical fee, so I feel like the guests are being penalized with a fee, that is not being used to update the resort. Additionally, it is so hard to get to this property, that I just maybe recommend it.
google avatar

Laurie V.

Yelp
The grounds are just gorgeous. The staff is super friendly. The room is clean (if not a bit dusty and grimy in some hidden spots, as we discovered when my toddler lost something underneath the massive bed). The wallpaper and furnishings are busy, but quirky and unique to the history of the resort. The food is pricey. The pizza is mediocre. The Easer buffet was delicious. The afternoon tea service is a nice afternoon treat. The morning coffee service is appreciated. The welcome glass of Prosecco was a nice touch. The schedule of activities is inaccurate. This is likely a one-and-done, but my arm might be twisted to give it another try if the opportunity presents itself. I thought $35+ for a small little simple pizza was a little absurd- especially when they told me they are too busy to deliver it and I would have to come down and pick it up. I thought the extravagant Easter Buffet was really well-done and my son loved the cute desserts. I was disappointed that the published opening time (10 AM) for the President's Cottage Museum was not correct. By 10:30, we no longer wanted to wait, and were ready to get on the road. My little boy couldn't wait much longer than we already had. The grounds are well-kept and my son loved the playground. This review is somewhere between 3 and 4 stars, but I am rounding up and giving the benefit of the doubt. Especially because the staff is so nice. Some of the front desk workers may be new, because they didn't realize that the 1100 rooms were on the M level and not on Level 1. We wandered for a bit until I figured that out. But they were kind enough to let us check in to our room pretty early, and that was great! There is something for everyone here. The resort makes you feel like you've stepped back into a different era. I wish I could have done a Bunker tour, but there is an age cut off of 10, and my son is just too little (understandable, because he would not have really appreciated it anyhow). I am so happy I got to visit this massive resort. Thank you for a nice holiday weekend for our little family.

Yelp
My wife and I were married 10 years ago at the Greenbrier. The place was beautiful, and the staff went above and beyond to create many memorable experiences. To celebrate our ten-year anniversary, we returned to the Greenbrier this year, but our experience was far from lovely. The main reason I am writing this review is that the Greenbrier either lost or had our luggage stolen while it was under their care. During our stay, we left our luggage at the front desk, where it was placed in the storage room. When we returned to retrieve it, the staff was unable to locate our luggage. When we followed up with the Managers, they appeared more frustrated that we were bringing the issue to their attention than concerned about solving the problem. They had no answers, no solutions, and certainly no sympathy for the situation they had clearly caused. We requested to escalate the matter, but we were told we couldn't speak to their Director. Eventually, we filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), which the Greenbrier chose not to respond to. We submitted an itemized list of everything in the suitcase (not to mention the sentimental items that could not be replaced) and only requested reimbursement for what was lost or stolen. Finally, after nearly four months, their Director of Rooms contacted us and offered only a third of the value of what the Greenbrier had lost or allowed to be stolen. As if that weren't enough to ruin our trip, throughout our stay, we were nickel-and-dimed for things you wouldn't expect from a high-end resort. For example, they attempted to charge us for a small refrigerator in our room. I had also asked the concierge to do something special to commemorate our anniversary, and they placed a couple of roses in the room--then charged us for them. Additionally, I had requested a late check-out months in advance because our travel reservations weren't until later in the day. When we arrived, we found out that the request hadn't been noted, and it wasn't accommodated. It brings me no pleasure to write this review. I have wonderful memories of being married at the Greenbrier, as many others do. However, the Greenbrier has clearly fallen from grace and no longer operates with the same standards and integrity it once did. Sure, you can stay at the Greenbrier, but don't let your luggage out of your sight, lower your expectations for the quality of service, and you might have a decent time.

Yelp
What an amazing historical place to see. We had a great day seeing and learning all about the history here. A historical treasure to be sure.

Yelp
Everything was closed because they were short staffed. The pools looked really dirty but we couldn't go in because they were closed. The food was ok but way over priced. Only come here if your looking to golf and spend a lot of money Here's a review through my ten year old. 1 star: There was nothing for me to do (as a ten year old) the arcade was closed along with the pool. Yelp
Such a historic resort. You will feel like you have stepped back into a glamorous time from the moment you arrive. So many things to do. Shopping, bowling, events daily!!! Casino, escape rooms, movies. Can be expensive with the taxes, resort fees, and historical fees.- , but they have off season deals . Definitely somewhere to go at least once in your life. Do the bunker tour when your first arrive! Crazy history hidden for many years.

Yelp
The Greenbriar is the most perfect hotel that I have had the privilege of exploring. Every single detail is taken care of, it's also very beautiful and whimsical! There are so many activities and many great restaurants! The bunker and carriage ride tours should definitely be on your list of activities! I would give it 10 stars if I could. It's simply magical!!

Yelp
Coming from 3:30hr away, this was an experiment into going to some different places. But it has been on my list and was a present for my birthday - so off we go. We came right in-between the spring planting and the summer planting, so the garden beds weren't like you would usually see on postcards - which is fine, but if you are there to specifically see those plan early spring or Mid-June for summer. The grounds were nice, southern charm and some vintage accents. The decor is very elegant, lots of original style prints and colors, and the staff was very friendly. They have daily inside and outside tours for guests, as well as different experiences you can book. They also have the golf course which is beautifully maintained and we got a chance to walk by. Taking both the outside tour and inside tour was a great move, enjoyed hearing about the history of the place, how it came to be present-day etc. For the paid experiences we did the Jeep off-road experience and the bunker tour. The Jeep experience I was a bit taken aback by but I adapted and delivered and really enjoyed it. The bunker tour was also really cool to listen to the inside aspects of the resort and how it was designed. I liked the various food options, as well as the casino - would recommend each. At first I thought the dress code would be stricter but I only saw one person popped, in which case they just gave the guy a jacket to enter the casino. Really liked coming here - another casino off the list and a great birthday present. If I came back I wouldn't mind playing a round to say I have, maybe trying other food place or two, whichever.

Yelp
The hotel is rich in history but it's extremely run down. They charge ritz Carlton prices for bathtub/showers that don't drain and extremely old uncomfortable mattresses. The activities are fun but you literally can't walk out of your room without spending $500. The 4th of July festivities were fun but everything was an absolute rip off. Only thing worth the money was the RZR driving through the mud tour. I'd recommend redirecting your $12,000 for a vacation for two somewhere else.

Yelp
A wet, filthy towel on the ground, a full garbage can, a sink that had hair and mouth wash residue, used coffee cups and a bed that was partially made greeted me when I got to my room. The building needs some renovation as well, but I can live with chipped paint on the window frame and so on. But the cleaning crew here has left me very uncomfortable about the resorts commitment to very basic services. I never had this problem at Motel 6.

Yelp
Most spectacular place to stay! Wonderful food and exceptional service! They left flowers and chocolates for our anniversary.

Yelp
I was last at the Greenbriar about 2003. It's deteriorated. First, I tried to make reservations and asked if they had dog friendly rooms. The answer was $250 cleaning fee and no dogs over 30#. Thirty pounds is a little yapper that's not trained. Appeared, to me, the place was barely occupied. They could use more guests and dogs. I tried to make dinner reservations, at the main dining room, and got no reply via email so I called, days later, and was told I could only make dinner reservations the day I wanted to dine, since I wasn't staying there. I called on the day I arrived in town and got a 7pm reservation. THE PLACE WAS WIDE OPEN and THEY NEEDED More BUSINESS! STUPID, STUPID!!!! A cosmo, from the bar, was mediocre, with a 20% automatic tip. The dinner menu was disappointing. I had foie gras and the portion was small and the presentation poor (compared to the last 4 times I've had it on this trip.) I had the pork chop and it was breaded. The Prime Strip steak was ok (because it was Prime not because they did a great job of preparation. Entree options were limited, with no specials, given the hoopla to get in and the price. I had a soufflé for desert and that was the only good part of the overpriced dinner. They add an automatic 20% tip, which is always insulting and presumptuous. The service was ok. I'm glad I went to the Greenbriar in the 90s and in 2003 but I'll not make any attempt to return nor will I suggest it to anyone in the future. TOO BAD. Mismanagement and ego seem to have ruined a once impressive resort.

Yelp
Had to wait for our room, they lost our luggage and gave me attitude when I pressed them about it. I had to bring it up myself after it was "found" two hours later. This place is a joke. Luxury Hotels? Only in price-definitely not the service or experience. Day two - reservations made TWO days ago somehow did not stick with led to a huge issue trying to find food for the family. If I could give this place a mi us stars I would. Here's my humble advice - go someplace else.

Yelp
I'm a huge history fan - the good, the bad, the ugly - and will travel far and wide to see historical places. On a whim, we decided to take a medium south bound drive to White Sulphur Springs for the history and nature. One of the places we visited was The Greenbrier Resort and, um, I'm still not sure how I feel. The grounds are spacious and well-manicured. The hotel itself is rather grand and beautiful from the outside. The inside was another story - overstimulation of the senses and the wallet because why is a bunker tour $95 x 2 people ($105 after tip). If the tour guide doesn't get half of that + the entire tip then I'm honestly not sure why folks are paying that much. I understand many rooms are now occupied for data storage but that should definitely reduce the price, not cost close to $100 for two people given we don't get to see the entire place. That being said, it had several exhibits with nifty antique items from the time it was built and the guide was amazing. Wish he were my neighbor. We also went bowling - $63 for 2 games + shoe rental x 2 people. I mean, I don't shy from expensive things but there needs to be a very obvious ROI and the price tag for only 2 games is... a lot. The gentleman behind the counter was super friendly, though. I also have to add - for a place boasting $4000 rooms the food was rather lackluster. And by food I mean the subpar $6 cup of coffee & the $8 smoothie that was supposedly made from crushed fruit but not one piece of fruit went into that drink lol it was juice, ice, powder. C'mon now. I understand the preservation of history and hate the millennial gray/beige bs that has taken over hotels but my brain hurt. I sat in a reception room pre-bunker tour and had to close my eyes. Very pretty room behind the 4 different patterns of rugs, chairs, tapestry, and curtains. Combined with historical architecture + gold accents above the fireplace, the very modern seafoam green paint on the walls, and heavy, dark brown doors. Not trying to do a disservice to the late Dorothy Draper (or floral patterns in general) but oof. Also checked out the grounds a bit - very pretty. The art collective was also really neat - think I found a present for a very good friend of mine. Can also see how it would be a great ski resort and/or a fun mid-week lounge around the pool but the other reviews say reservations are an issue so now back to square one, not sure how to feel.

Yelp
This review is for "Christmas at The Greenbrier 2022". Everything is decorated like a Christmas wonderland. From the beautiful 300 Christmas trees to the outdoor ice skating with fire pit tables you will feel the spirit of the holiday. We stayed in a deluxe room on the 5th floor facing the front (Christmas Tree). The room was very large, muted colors (unlike the wallpaper rooms and drapes) with a wall in closet and large marble bathroom with shower and soaking tub. Dinner in Prime 44 West steak house was good. Not excellent. Every thing is ala Carte. The sides are around $16 and large enough for 4 (family style). We split a steak and had 1 side and it was more than enough. I had a Caesar Salad made table side. The Lobster Chowder was also good. I love the shops. The indoor pool area is very warm so no issues swimming in the winter. Bowling, and arcade are great family activities. There is also a spa. We did go to the casino and had fun. There is a trolley that can take you to the many outdoor adventures on the property. (Golf, horseback riding, rope course, play ground, Polaris ATV, etc) Pictures do not do the beauty of Christmas at The Greenbrier justice.

Yelp
One of the most unique places I've ever stayed! The walls are adorned with loud and vibrant wallpaper that makes taking photos so fun! So many great things to do onsite including rafting, golfing, the spa, clay, glass blowing, and delicious options for food! The rooms are clean and a great size but this hotel is old so take that into account! The bunker tour, breakout rooms and bourbon tastings should absolutely be on your list!

Yelp
I had a 4 day stay that I needed to cancel the last day. They would not let me do it and charged me for a night that I didn't stay. Greedy people.

Yelp
The greenbrier is a really neat historical resort. Step back in time as you walk through the halls decorated by the one and only Dorothy draped. Unfortunately, I get the sense that the hotel has fallen on hard times, as many parts are in need of major repairs. Everything you purchase has a historical fee added to it. It almost feels like they're punishing the visitors they do have. We went in the summer and they were in the middle of filming a Christmas hallmark movie. They had given no advance notice to patrons of this, and it got exceedingly annoying to be stumbling onto their set and held up in various hallways waiting for them to finish filming. Additionally, the movie crew did a terrible job of communicating to paying hotel guests as to where they should avoid. We enjoyed the historical grounds tour, but the bunker tour was rather disappointing. Really spectacular history, but the tour is kind of like touring your high schools basement. Presidents cottage is fun and under appreciated. We also tried the mountaineer experience and that was really exceptional! The guide was very knowledgeable and catered to people of all skill levels. (Great job Zach!) The staff of the entire resort are very welcoming and kind. There are several places to eat in the hotel, but if you go at normal dinner/lunch times, expect them to be very busy. Food was just ok. Daily tea time is really fun and the sweets are delicious. They usually had music entertainment and they were all very excellent. Overall, a really cool experience. It's just rather pricey for what you get.

Yelp
I just really like the Greenbrier and all it's accompanying history, elegance and refinement. In many ways it is a throwback and the team there works hard to provide an authentic/elegant and enjoyable stay. We have found three nights to be a great length of time and their special over MLK day makes it even more enjoyable. Some recommendations...the dining room makes for a nice dinner...the onion soup is excellent as was the filet and halibut. For dessert, the crepes Suzette prepared table side is a fun treat. The lobby bar is an excellent place to play games, enjoy well prepared drinks ...and order a pizza from the forum, a bit unexpected I know. Prime 44 is a traditional steakhouse...ask to be seated away from table 21 and the hustle and bustle of the staff. Recommend dishes are the Caesar salad, chilled seafood tower, porterhouse, mac and cheese, bananas foster and cream brûlée...also, ask for Peggy if she is working. Then...finish the night at the casino and make sure you are there for the 10 Greenbrier waltz. The dealers are very helpful and the gaming is much less intense than Las Vegas. On the negative side, we found the food and service at Slammin' Sammies to be lacking and would not recommend it. On the activity front we enjoyed pickle ball, the bunker tour, bowling, and the escape room...we did not enjoy the dialing pianos as it really was a kids show. Lastly the decor is worth noting...originally done by Dorothy Draper, they have maintained the bold colors, big patterns and details that let you know they are paying attention.

Yelp
There is a real problem with food service. I don't know how you can have a facility this large and not be able to serve lunch. They have several restaurants at the facility but only had 1 opened for lunch. I was there for a 1/2 marathon and the wait to get a meal anywhere in the building was over an hour. The race was billed as having a champagne brunch afterwards but they ran out of bacon before I finished. It is really challenging to not be able to get any protein for hours after a race like that.

Yelp
I've stayed at Keswick near UVA for the same price and gotta tell ya, they need to take lessons from here. Every room well decorated and well maintained. This place aims at superior service. The many colors and decor are fashionable and timeless as in days gone by. They closed the Casino to the public because of the multiple Greyhound buss loads of gamblers that were showing up and not meeting its dress guidelines- duh. I passed on the $40 per person Bomb Shelter tours. Not sure if any tour is worth that much! If so, my loss. Perhaps this is their way at not having to make so many tours. The place has so many venues that are fun and merchandised well. It has golf, pools, tennis, trails, off property whitewater, bowling and even waiting out a nuclear blast or two. ( hey, those little master locks on the bomb seller doors won't keep me out if it came to that!) There was amble help, busboys and staff to assist check in. The only negative was the head Buss staff (dirty knees?) was snippy to me when I asked him a simple question as he was counting his cash tips outside in front of all. Maybe I caught him off guard with cash in hand and it embarrassed him. This is a great hotel from the old era of Grand Hotels and worth the designation drive to WV!

Yelp
Very customer service oriented! The Lobby bar and bartender very amiable and you will have top notch drinks and service. A good place to visit at the Greenbrier Resort when you want small plates in between lunch and dinner. We took the bunker tour and decided to stick around and dress up for dinner in the main dining room. More to follow on the wonderful resort in White Sulfur Springs. If you don't eat there at least walk through the hotel, take a Bunker tour and see the beautiful main dining room and the lighting for the holidays. Alot to view in this enormous hotel and meeting center.

Yelp
I love history and this place has a lot of it. We had a guided tour by the gentleman who was on the documentary. Very interesting but very long. The grounds are beautiful and the hotel is even nicer (didn't stay overnight). We grabbed items to eat to go and they were super expensive. I recommend maybe eating at a sit down restaurant. Expensive to stay overnight but in the future we may return and stay.

Yelp
This review may be coming a little late, but I wanted to see if The Greenbrier was going to reach out. My wife and I went to The Greenbriar in the past for Thanksgiving, her birthday and New Years Eve. The first two trips went well. They seemed to under promise and over deliver. However, our trip there last year for New Years did not go great. I reached out to them twice about this and Roger in Guest Relations did not respond the first time and the second time all I was told was that he would relay this information to their leadership team. Did not hear from anyone. Here are some of the issues we experienced during our stay: Ordering room service was a pain. My wife tried several times the night before calling but no one would answer. So, we woke up early to place an order then after a while, they called back to tell us that the room service would be delayed over an hour. From the time we called until we ate breakfast was several hours. Good thing we didn't have anything planned that day. It seemed like it was impossible to eat anywhere that weekend if you did not have reservations. This may be a mistake on our end, however, there should always be someplace to eat. If you are thinking "maybe they should have called room service" we did, and they stopped taking orders at certain times. How does room service stop taking orders at a resort like this? Another issue was the shuttle to Sam Sneed's was supposed to show every 5 minutes. We waited over 20 minutes and decided to leave because no shuttle showed up. I am a big bourbon and scotch guy, and all the bars were out of what I asked for. All the menus had Bookers on them, however the only bar to have this was Café Carleton (bourbon bar by the casino). And on New Years Eve I was told that they were to open at 8:00 pm and waited till 8:30 while my wife was up at dinner. It really seemed like the resort was understaffed and things did not run as smoothly as they did on our first two visits. I may be a little picky but when you go to a place like this that was voted among the best resorts in the United States, you want to be treated like it's a high-class resort. Upon our first two visits, my wife and I really thought that this was going to be our place. We would visit a few times a year and go on holidays. We would have scheduled a trip for this New Years if last year went like our first two trips did. When you spend 3k to 5k for a weekend, you expect more especially for a holiday weekend. However, with our last visit, I refuse to go back. Greenbriar, all you had to do was follow up and you did not. I hope anyone reading this will think twice if you are planning a trip there. Yes, if things go as they should, it's a nice place. However, if they do not go smoothly, this resort could really care less.

Yelp
Wow. The moment you drive through the gates and get a glimpse of the this beautiful Greek Revival structure you'll see that you're entering a one of a kind place that carries history and regality. The stunning architecture of the resort will have you taking pictures left, right, up, down, and sideways. It truly is majestic. The grounds remind you of how the elite upper class must have lived in England's aristocratic days. You can do posh activities like horseback riding and clay shooting or go more adventurous and schedule a white water rafting trip. There's two pools. The indoor one is like an homage to 1920s Hollywood while the outdoor one definitely carries a more resort like feel and was our absolute favorite place to hang out during the day. The views of the manicured grounds and mountains are one of a kind. Poolside food and drinks were top notch as well. The resort has around 18 different restaurants that offers more casual affair to more sophisticated. Although we didn't have dinner in the main dining room, I hear that's the way to go! We did have their famous breakfast buffet which is held in the main dining room. That was definitely our favorite meal on site. They offer so many different dishes but the West Virginia Maple Syrup adds a special touch of flavor to everything. We read the paper while eating and never felt more elegant or part of high society than ever. Don't forget that coffee service is complimentary every single morning as is afternoon tea. This is the real deal. We're not talking about basic coffee and tea offerings. They serve you and provide a plethora of sweets. If you're a history buff then you'll definitely want to take the bunker tour. The resort was the emergency relocation site for all of Congress until the early 90s. Tours of the underground facility are surreal and add an additional historical touch to the significance the Greenbrier has held.

Yelp
One of my favorite places has fallen into disrepair. Sad is an understatement. I've been coming to the Greenbrier since I was a little girl. I have always viewed this resort as magical, historic, and wonderful quality. However, since the pandemic, the hotel has fallen into disrepair, the service is average at best (primarily because they are inundated with too many guests), the quality of the food is below average and everything is just expensive as ever. I understand that much of this is due to the new world we live in where it is hard to find people who want to work, but the guests should not suffer and still pay top dollar for what I would now consider a 2 star hotel. The bad review is primarily directed at Food & Beverage and Housekeeping. Again, the staff is lovely, but they can't keep up since they don't have enough people working. A few issues we experienced: 1. They lost my in-laws luggage upon check-in. 2. The ice cream served at Drapers was spoiled and they finally shut down the machine when my mother-in-law mentioned it tasted off. 3. There were no pillows in our room upon arrival. 4. There was no toilet paper in my in-laws room. 5. They apparently no longer provide cribs, and gave us a tiny pack and play for our daughter to sleep in. 6. The carpets and furniture throughout the hotel are downright filthy and beat up. 7. We waited over an hour to receive our appetizers at 44 West. We had our two well behaved little girls with us who were starving. Total bill spent was over $700 and the meat was over cooked. I hate to give this hotel a bad review, but management needs to know that they have failed at maintaining this once beautiful and iconic resort. Your staff cannot keep up since you keep booking the hotel to capacity. It's time to restore this place to its former glory, give it some TLC, and either find more people or limit the number of guests so you can provide the best service. On a side note, the folks in the Spa and Outdoor Activities are amazing. Big shout out to Garret who took us on a wonderful carriage ride and to Aaron who gave the best hot stone massage!

Yelp
Overpriced for average food and lousy hospitality. We booked the Greenbrier for our mini wedding getaway. We arrived at 4pm ( their check-in time) and we were told it would be at least an hour wait. When they informed us of this it was more "matter of fact" with no apology or warmth. We ate at a few restaurants and found the food to be okay, nothing blew our minds. Cool decor, bunker tour was cool. We valeted our car during our stay due to very little parking. Preparing to check-out (2 hours before their check-out time) we called down 5-10 minutes before heading downstairs (like they recommended we do) and we were then informed it would be a 45 minute wait (which is exactly how long we waited). My husband offered to go get his own car and they told him he could not. Upon checkout, the person who gave my husband his receipt (two papers stapled together) stapled them as if they were not even paying attention, not together whatsoever. Just a total lack of effort and lousy hospitality, which is super disappointing at a place like this. Especially where they add a 22% service fee to every single thing you do.

Yelp
We went to the greenbrier for my birthday weekend with friends who have been visiting since the 1960s. It was sad to see how the hotel has not been maintained and seems to lack the staff to do so. 1. The public hallways and seating areas have carpets that could use cleaning . Napkins, Kleenex, empty glasses are left on tables, carpets etc. 2. Restaurant staff and housekeeping seem to lack training. Nobody knows what to do and may even have a language comprehension problem. This translates into bad service at the meals. 3. Front desk clerks all seem to be newbies ans there is no manager. 4. The suite we had had was in sad shape. Air conditioning and mini fridge needed updating (refrigerator was falling apart inside. ). Air condition was still the individual units and noisy. Furniture was chipped. The bathroom was small (especially for a large suite) and the toilet , bathtub and fixtures were outdated. The faucet was missing it's hot cold button. 5. In the public area , one of the main powder rooms had a bottle of dial soap and rough paper towels. All to say, quite disappointing. In a nutshell, there needs to be a renovation of the rooms, bathrooms furnishings . A good management training program in place and more personnel needed. Last but not least, the bunker tour was boring. In order to build out the casino there was nothing left to see. The guide missed the most interesting aspect such as the auditorium where the Congress would sit each chair had a voting button. (He totally left that out). Totally forgot important historical facts out . He called his boss a "glory hound" because of the celebrity's that came to tour and she would guide them. (Said it a few times. ) he has nothing if interest to add to the tour except a lot of platitudes. I do hope that these is a plan in the not too far future to institute some plans to install good management and to renovate the hotel. I do hope

Yelp
The whole property is very pretty with nice gardens. But the hotel itself is very outdated with carpet throughout. Floral wall paper and matching draper. The room has less amenity than holiday inn, and small 39 inch tv and no free bottle water at all. The AC is as loud as it can be and ruins the sleep when it automatically turn on in the middle of the night. WiFi in the hotel in general is very slow, got cut off 5 times during a business video conference. The hotel provide a lot of activities but the price is the highest I have ever seen for the same kind of activity elsewhere. There's a mandatory historical charge of 20% to everything, and 20% of service charge added to the bill as well no matter how poor the service you get. Which is what's happening in this hotel the service is HORRIBLE. Only one thing free in the hotel is the gym and pool. They charge pennies for everything you use. Making the stay not enjoyable. I've travel around the world and stayed in luxury hotels around but I had never been so disappointed.

Yelp
The Greenbrier has the nicest employees and a great golf course, this is why they don't get a one star. To say the decor is dated is and understatement. The place is just old and beat up and in desperate need of a renovation. The carpet in my room has been here for a good 40 years, very similar to my grandma's carpet at her house in 1975. If you are traveling from the West Coast it will take at least 12 hours to get to this isolated location. This is the 3rd meeting we have had here and I definitely hope it is the last.

Yelp
Do Not Come here on a weekend. They don't believe people should eat lunch here. If you must come here for a convention I highly recommend you bring groceries if you want to eat. You will wait up to 2 hours for food on a Saturday or Sunday for lunch because half their restaurants are closed for lunch. Seated at the bar area in the lobby they had one bartender who's waitresses are not allowed to go behind the bar to get even soda or non-alcoholic tea. We waited 20 minutes and didn't even get water while we waited. When I complained she quickly offered to cancel our order. We just left. Thank god we have our car and had to drive ourselves into town in order to get food. They're severely understaffed. So you better bring a cooler with food if you need to eat lunch because you're not getting g it at The Greenbrier

Yelp
We made it to the Greenbrier and that trip is filled with wonderful memories. I love the afternoon tea they held in the lobby each day. Immediately before there would be a couple dressed in period costume who danced the waltz to the pianist playing at the grand piano. It was very sweet. They always have coffee, hot and cold tea and different sweets. I was a little disappointed that there weren't any savories to be honest. One day, they also had hot cocoa and wassail, too. It was something to look forward to each day. The hotel is very grand looking. I never could get a really good exterior photo because you have to get far away to try and get everything in. This place is huge! We got to our room and there were some decadent chocolates in a little box and some red roses. Not sure if they do that for everyone or for us since we were celebrating our wedding anniversary. Very spacious rooms, too. You needn't worry about things to do because they have spa services, culinary demonstration classes, bunker tours, casino, hotel tours, great places to hike, horseback riding, hiking, movies, mystery magic show, bowling, indoor swimming, etc. You really need to take the bunker tour because it's fascinating! There is also a tennis club & fitness center which has a court where you can play pickleball. You'll find a super golf course and a tennis stadium, too. The chapel on the property is gorgeous with it's vibrant stained glass and chandeliers. I was told that the owner had it built for his daughter to get married in. As a matter of fact, there are stunning chandeliers everywhere. I asked the historian and he said that he counted 84! If you like, there is a casino downstairs, lots of shops and The Candy Maker who provides some of the treats for the tea - yum! For your meals there are several restaurants in house you can choose from including the main dining room where we had a glorious meal. Be sure to make reservations for your activities and meals if you are eating at one of the nicer ones. Your first clue as to the kind of stay you will have here is that after registering, you have your choice of an iced tea or champagne!! Be sure to meet the greeter/doorman named Frank Mosley. He has worked there for over 60 years and is a real treat! Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Wow. Sad joke. Went for brunch. Building is huge but rather unremarkable outside of that size. Inside was...unremarkable as well. Yes, Dorothy Draper's signature style is dripping the whole place...but...that it's...all bullets fired. "Oh look! The curtains don't really match the drapes in color nor texture!" Wow...I am in awe. We sat in a large atrium waiting for the pleasant hostess to seat us. She crammed us next to the table of 4 that had an extra 3 stuffed around blathering on incessantly for the duration of our meal. The buffet was a mistake. The same food is available via Sysco Foods at any Hampton Inn for free. Severely under staffed as at least 10 tables remained unsat for lack there of. Employees there were efficient but looked beaten down. Tina was helpful as two at our table got the eggs to order (much better looking/tasting than the buffet). Motorcycles are NOT welcome. We won't return.

Yelp
I felt like a PRINCESS during my Greenbrier stay! Everything was just so beautiful to look at! There was so much to do from the restaurants to the casino, bowling, tennis, golf, spa, pool, gym--the list goes on! Everyone was so nice and attendant. I loved the daily itineraries with different things to do each day. The room I stayed in had a private concierge with free drinks and food and a beautiful room to relax in. I wish I could live at the Greenbrier!

Wayne F.

Yelp
Once great, now run down and way overpriced. Justice family upgraded the Greenbrier in their first year or maybe two. Since then it's declined to the point that only the golf courses are worth visiting. The food is only good but you pay Michelin star prices. Visit Lewisburg restaurants for better dining. The tea service and history may make it worthwhile for first or even second time visitors but if you've been there many times it loses it's luster and becomes an overpriced and less enjoyable experience.

Douglas C.

Yelp
Terrible food and terrible service. Not to mention they charge like they're 5 star restaurants. Mandatory 20% gratuities on everything everywhere so no one feels like they have to do anything. The food is vile and the staff is grossly undertrained and no one cares including management. First and LAST time!!!

Aleksandra A.

Yelp
Incredibly pricy. incredible. So I thought the activities were going to be making up for the cost. Well even if you're willing to pay the exorbitant prices - they are sold out, or pretty disappointing. Nighttime activities include casino or bar, neither of which interest me. Dinner for 5 costs ~$250 without any alcohol and that's with 3 kids meals and no dessert - and in the less desired restaurant. Overhyped tea at 4 pm with a few okish small desserts and tea - but you wait in line for 15 min to get a cup. So yeah - don't recommend.

Yelp
The absolute worst experience of my life! Please do NOT stay here. I'm a 38 year old ICU nurse visiting with my husband whom is a busy physician. He is the hardest working man I know and I was so excited to plan this little get away so he could have a bit of fun at blackjack and have a wonderful dinner. After all, I don't know a soul more deserving then him. We went to the Casino and that was fairly fun, until it wasn't. I had a bit too much wine, which according to my husband the waitress was glad to refill for me the second I finished one. I mean why not? If you're loaded you'll waste your money right? 4 glasses=288 dollars. We had dinner at 44 West, and the bill totaled over 500$. The steak was a poor cut and extremely overcooked. And do NOT be tempted by their allure to eat the "lobster" mashed potatoes. I'm fairly certain they're instant. Also the bathroom by 44 west had a leaking toilet sure to cause a fall, which I reported. I agree the decor is a bit drab and the building is definitely in disrepair. But here comes the worst part, after a dispute/argument with my husband, I admittedly broke a wine glass in our room. This caused the hotel staff to force me into a separate room in the hotel even though I wanted to leave. Upon trying to return to my husband to get my phone and money so I could scoot out of here, they had me arrested! In total I spent over 2k for one night and had to spend the night in jail. Never in my life have I ever been in any sort of jail, or any manor of trouble. I was treated like a murderer, for breaking a wine glass. Then a week later I was contacted and informed after this whole tragedy that I owed them 2,800 for damages. Remember I threw a wine glass, not a bomb. I will write this and remember it as the worst experience in my life. Not only would I not return here, I will never visit WV again, which I used to frequent at air BNBs and so on. Please go somewhere else. Check the reviews over the last year. It's over priced and honestly quite a scary experience.

Yelp
Absolutely lovely. Incredible spa. Incredible service. 5 stars in every category. Resort attire- make sure to pack accordingly to preserve the traditions.

Yelp
3rd stay there recently. The last trip I noticed how shabby the rooms have gotten, and really could use an update to them. Thankfully our room didn't have a nasty bathroom with mold or dirt. The carpets were not stained and everything was clean for the most part. Other people have reported such things in other reviews with pictures. I completely agree with the Greenbrier not being a value now. For the price you pay and the services you get it is certainly not worth it. The last time I went I was shocked at the $90 bill for their breakfast buffet that was nothing special. This last trip I went to the Prime 44 West for dinner and the bill was about $500 for dinner for 3 people. The food was not worth the money. One person had to send a steak back because it was cooked too much. The second one was still cooked too much. While I did not need to send my food back, I wasn't impressed with what I had to eat. When I go on vacation again, I am not going to consider the Greenbrier. It is not worth the cost at all. I don't mind paying a lot for top-tier services, but this is not my experience at The Greenbrier.
