The Hainan Story Chapter Two

I’m not sure why some people are leaving harsh comments about this place because my experience here was really good and memorable. I tried their roasted chicken rice, and honestly, it was one of the best single dishes I had during my entire Singapore trip! The chicken was tender, flavorful, and paired perfectly with the fragrant rice. The staff were really nice, warm, and attentive, which made the dining experience even better. The location itself is clean, comfortable, and well-kept, making it a great spot to sit down and enjoy a meal. If you’re at Jewel and craving chicken rice, I definitely recommend giving this place a try. It was a highlight for me, and I’d happily return!

A Cozy Afternoon at The Hainan Story There’s something special about sharing a quiet afternoon over tea and pastries, and The Hainan Story turned out to be the perfect spot. While it may not have the traditional romantic ambiance, the warm, nostalgic charm of the place made it a cozy retreat. We indulged in their delightful pastries, each bite filled with comforting flavors, and their teh C - smooth, creamy, and satisfying—was the perfect companion to our conversation. Sitting there, sipping tea, and enjoying the moment, it felt like time slowed down just enough for us to savor both the food and each other’s company. If you’re looking for a simple yet meaningful place to unwind, this is a great choice—because sometimes, it’s not about the setting but the company that makes a moment special.

Chicken serving size is too small and ordering is frustrating as you need to order via the app, and in our case not all the menu appeared on the app. As the place was busy, it was hard to flag down the waiters as they were all busy serving food. We managed to order in the end and the waiter had to order it using his phone. Taste is good, however due to the earlier frustration in ordering, I did not really enjoy the dining experience. The Hainan chicken set that arrived first came with 2 forks and no chilli sauce or ginger, and this makes the dish bland and tasteless. The roast chicken set that arrived much later came with the chilli sauce. Egg tarts are delicious and served warmed. Wanton soup is not bad too. Overall, it would be much better if there’s an option to order without using the app as firstly tourists doesn’t have a local number that has to be inputted before the menu appears, and secondly the full menu did not appear on both our phones after we managed to get past the first hurdle.

[CHANGI, SINGAPORE] @thehainanstory is nicely nestled within the B2 of Jewel and is definitely one of the options you should think of while you're here, or when you're welcoming guests to local cuisine! I've had food from Hainan Story a couple of times and I love their curry chicken and their coffee, but this time I decided to get something different. The plate of Scottish Pork Steak ($18.90) may seem small at first, but it was definitely wholesome and filling towards the end. The pork cutlet itself was soft yet meaty, and I was surprised that it wasn't dry at all. The meat itself does not have that pork odour, and the flavour from the brown sauce was just simply addictive. It has that nostalgic old school flavours but better. As for the sides, the fries were done well, and you can tell that the baked beans and coleslaw are homemade. They tasted really fresh and different compared to other places! For drinks I really recommend their homemade Ice Lemon Tea ($2.80). It was so smooth, fragrant and not too sweet. Perfect to go with this hearty meal! Definitely will be back again 😍

Great concept of putting all the popular brands of hainanese food under one umbrella. I had high expectations since this is a highly curated choice of restaurants but what I ordered today disappoint. The chicken curry gravy is actually good. The chicken was definitely too tough, either it’s been frozen too long or just left overnight. The braised pork portion was too small, 2 slices and that was all of it. Overall overpriced for curry rice.

The food is quite good. Ordered the kou rou set and i love it! Curry is not too spicy, meat quite tender. My friend ordered the chicken rice set and it's pretty good too. Drinks wise, kopi is quite fragrant, worth the try. But i don't think the three treasure drink is worth the price. All others are good. Oh ya, if the management were to see this, i would like to commend a staff today (24 Feb) around 1.45pm doing cashiering. She is so friendly! I seldom see a cashier who is as friendly and smiley as her. Forgot to let her know..

Saw quite a number of poor reviews and I tried it for myself and I was pleasantly surprised with how tasty it was. It’s not like what everyone else whom said. I think the lychee toast is pretty refreshing, giving an otherwise ordinary bread a new form. I wouldn’t say to patronise this shop as a representative of local Singapore food, just treat it as a place that sells elevated versions of local food that is unique to the shop. Overall good job with the food and keep it up

We eagerly entered The Hainan Story, anticipating their legendary Hainanese Chicken Rice, only to be disappointed to find it sold out. Undeterred, we ordered other dishes: Fried Pork Cutlet Fried Rice, Fried Chicken Fried Rice, a Kid's Macaroni and Cheese set, and Dumpling Soup. We also added a plain Hainanese Rice, which, to our surprise, came with a complimentary soup and a generous portion of fragrant rice for just $1.10 – a delightful unexpected find. The Fried Chicken Fried Rice was a massive portion, leaving us quite shocked. The Dumpling Soup, featuring six plump dumplings, would be an excellent choice for those looking to minimize carbohydrates.
