I'll start by saying that I am totally open to fast casual food and am a fan of restaurants like Chipotle and Tarka. I have never tried HG before and was hoping it'd be just that -- a reasonably good and affordable version of Middle Eastern food. I have to be honest -- I was somewhat disappointed. I ordered a chicken/beef gyro combo platter. The meat just wasn't that good, in terms of texture and flavor. I also felt super dehydrated all night after eating it. I will say that the beef was better than the chicken. Ultimately, it might be better in a gyro sandwich versus stand alone. Also tried their falafel -- on the hard/dry side. To be fair, it's pretty rare to find great falafel anywhere. My final gripe is that their hot sauce is insanely spicy -- one drop can spoil your entire dish. Be careful when applying!
I'll give them some credit -- the hummus was pretty creamy and tasty. The baklava cheesecake was decent, although it was just dry baklava ingredients loosely piled on top of cheesecake. The cheesecake part was pretty good though.
I also appreciate their simple and straightforward online ordering system, as well as the fast preparation.
Overall, I'm a bit confused as to the appeal of this place. It's not particularly cheap -- it cost us $35 for two combo platters, hummus, and a dessert. For me, there are just way better restaurants in this area to spend your money at (including fast casual and fast food). Next time I want gyro meat, I'm going back to Niko Niko's.
