The Halliburton

Love, love, love Halifax! Really enjoyed our final destination stop in Halifax. The Halliburton is 3 buildings and we stayed in the basement suite of the 1 furthest away from reception. Our room was great - easily the best we had during our tour. We had our own lounge area, big bedroom with our own mini patio and a spacious bathroom (so many towels!). We had an issue over whether breakfast was included and to be honest it wasn't worth the money! You have to book your provisions the night before with up to 5? items. These include pastries, juice, overnight oats, fruit etc. Nothing cooked. These are brought to your table at the same time. You can make your own coffee so no table service really. This was the only disappointing thing about this hotel. It was really hot when we were there which we were told was unusual but it didn't detract from our stay. Visited the main tourist places including the citadel which was a great half day spent. Our favourite spot was down on pier, people and boat watching and soaking up the atmosphere. Would love to come back.

We loved this hotel and as a party of 7 we had 3 rooms. Staff were super friendly and happy to help. It’s traditional and quirky but we had big rooms and very comfortable beds with good quality bedding. These buildings are old so it creaks and not everything is perfect but this is part of the charm. The location is amazing and we walked everywhere - it was quiet at night though. The garden is very pretty and charming and we enjoyed having an evening drink there. There are many coffee shops around so breakfast is no problem but also the coffee offered in the lounge is a nice touch. All in all this is much nicer than a large chain hotel and would highly recommend.

We stayed at The Halliburton for 2 nights in one of the town houses at the beginning of our Maritime Tour. We were made to feel very welcome by all the lovely staff. Our room was located up several flights of stairs but the staff were very will to help us carry our luggage. Our room was comfortable, quirky and had everything we needed for our short stay.|There is a lovely little garden at the back of the hotel a great place for a quiet coffee or glass of wine.|The hotel is perfectly placed and minutes away from the waterfront, restaurants and museums.

Super cute and comfortable! We stayed in one of the petite rooms with a double bed, which was excellent. I have back problems and every bed other than my own gives me soreness when I wake up. This one did not! The room was quaint and clean with no smell and a nice bathroom. The hotel occupies three heritage buildings. The main entrance has a lovely but small lobby with a nice sitting room and a small breakfast lounge. The staff were super accommodating, allowing us to store our suitcases in a room there in the morning (we caught a red-eye flight into Halifax landing at 7:15 am) and then put our room on priority cleaning for an early check-in. We were very grateful for this after a sleepless night on the plane. I gave 4/5 stars on location because it is off on one side of the downtown rather than centrally located, meaning many things could be quite a walk, but the location itself is quiet and pleasant with nearby attractions like the public gardens. A good place to stay if you’re catching the train as well.

We had a lovely stay at the Halliburton and will be back again! The hotel is old but very well kept and clean. Rooms were very unique with antique furnishings. There was a lovely courtyard and garden to enjoy. We really liked the complimentary coffee in the morning in the library. We came back in the afternoon to enjoy a couple drinks for their happy hour. The staff are exceptional and really made our stay enjoyable.

It was a great stay for one night in Halifax. Close to downtown. Comfortable accommodation. Could use a proper bar/social space in the lobby. There was wine available but only one red/white option and had to order from the hotel check in desk. No one comes to see if you'd like another.....have to go back up to the desk and ask. Charming, historic spaces, but also no elevator, so plan accordingly. Limited parking available.

Lovely Inn in a central location of Halifax. We had the one bedroom suite on the ground floor with its own heating and large bathroom - very comfortable and clean. Short walk to the water, restaurants and sites including the Immigration Museum ( very good) and the Bicycle Thief restaurant (excellent). Highly recommend!

Loved our stay at the Halliburton! The bed was VERY comfortable, the staff were very friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was very pleasant. Bonus points for having a shower cap in the bathroom! So many hotels don’t provide one anymore and as a curly girl it is a must!

Last month, the hubs and I won a trip to Nova Scotia. Yes seriously! It was an amazing 2 night trip to see 6 Primrose at the Devour Food and Film Fest in Wolfville, NS, but I also knew that we NEEDED to add on a couple days and see Halifax. Hence, where the Halliburton comes in. I spent a couple days searching Hotels.com for all the options, reading websites, and talking to peeps from Halifax to get an idea of where we'd want to stay. I finally settled on the Halliburton and so happy that we did. It's a historic site literally 3 blocks from the water. The buildings official dates are listed outside on plaques as Halliburton House 1823, Henry House 1834, and Pryor-Benney House 1831. You can see the bay out the front door. We ended up with a basement suite to save our money for eating all the seafood our bellies could hold and it worked out great. The bathroom had been recently renovated and Bath and Body Works toiletries were complimentary. It's a series of three townhouses that have been converted into a "boutique hotel." Parking is included but limited and super squished. I don't think you could fit a large truck in the back. They do have overflow parking down the street next to the waterfront, but I'm not sure of the details. Breakfast is included and was your standard continental with one or two hot items. On our stay the hot item was beans. There was also cold sliced ham and hard boiled eggs. Coffee and tea is available complimentary throughout your stay. The basement did have a bit of an older musty smell, I'm not sure you can get around that being old and so close to the water but I didn't mind. Right off the lobby, is "Stories," their fine dining restaurant. The menu looked lovely and I'm sure it would make for a romantic eat in experience but we were more interested in walking around and checking out local pubs. I highly recommend Henry House Pub just two blocks away (delicious and traditional meat pies) and the Bicycle Thief (waterfront) for a fancier night out. Our room was cute but felt cramped, especially the washroom. The TV was small, the stand it was on didn't swivel well enough that we felt like we had a good view from anywhere we were sitting, and the picture was washed-out. On-site parking is a definite plus for Halifax and the spaces were adequately sized, but when an oversize pickup parked next to our little compact car, we had a heck of a time getting out of our space without bonking into the neighbor's porch. Location is decent but unexceptional; it's a few blocks away from the main attractions of Downtown Halifax, although our room was nice and quiet. Be aware that the rooms are all located in townhouses that are extremely narrow, with tight hallways, low ceilings, and a lot of half-steps that can pose a tripping hazard. Staff was pleasant but we would have appreciated if someone had showed us to our room, especially since it wasn't all that easy to find from the front desk with how the Halliburton is set up. Overall, our stay was adequate, but we would have chosen to stay at a more central and modern hotel if we had to do it over.

A unique hotel located in three historic buildings. Yes there are stairs, it's because these are historic homes and reconfiguring the interior spaces would be expensive. Rooms are nicely decorated, some with balconies. Close to the waterfront.

For all the great things that Halifax has, one thing that we lack is the definitive place to stay when you visit - we don't have Portland's Ace Hotel or our own version of The Drake in Toronto. It's a shame, really. So when the Haliburton offered up a pretty snazzy deal for last weekend's Open City ($125 for a room and continental breakfast for two), I figured I'd start the quest to test out the city's homes away from home. Going in, all I knew about the Haliburton was that Stories should be on my list of restaurants to try when my budget inexplicable grows by 300%, so I was surprised to learn that the complex extends past the brick townhouse into the neighbouring ones on Morris Street. Given the vibe of the south end, I thought this was actually a nice touch and a great way to make the experience a little more homey if a visitor were to be staying longer than one night. You get street-level access to your building with classic keys - not the plastic-card variety -and a second key for your room door. Now, I did hear from multiple sources about doors that leave a bit too much room near the floor, but ours fit snug! The room itself, well, I wouldn't exactly put it in the 'boutique hotel' category, but for an classic style inn with a bit of continental charm, it fit the bill. Besides, in my books, the location is unbeatable. A (surprisingly high up) double bed was comfortable, the pillows were massive (I'd bring my own next time), a flatscreen was mounted on a swivel arm on the wall, and two armchairs and couch make a decent sitting area. Not exactly to my personal taste, but it was all clean and cozy! I *did* love the balcony in the back that looked over their patio garden. Lovely for enjoying the complimentary two cups of Keurig coffee in the morning. The continental breakfast hit the spot too - bagels and cream cheese, boiled eggs, fresh fruit, yogurt cups, Java Blend coffee...it was just what I was looking for. Overall, it was a pleasant, quick stay. I think it may be jarring to go in expecting the same level of blown-awayness that Stories offers foodies which could be why I wasn't left tremendously excited coming or going, but for someone who doesn't exactly need grandiose lobbies and amenities for a night out in my own town, I felt pretty good about our visit.

Not a boutique hotel. Just an old one. Great location but that's about it. With no elevator, we had to drag our luggage 2 floors to discover we landed a petite room and a double bed. The size of this room is insufficient for one person not to mention a couple. Luckily, we had a busy schedule and spent very little time in the room. The TV in the room is a joke. A 21inch monitor and is almost invisible even in the petite room. The hotel stuff is great and very helpful

My husband and I just returned from a lovely stay at HH and we would stay there again in a heartbeat! Our room was spacious and lovely with a view over the courtyard. The staff were wonderful and more then willing to talk about local attractions. Housekeeping kept our room spotless and I didn't hear a peep from any other guests. Perks included: 1) Free Wi-FI 2) An extremely comfortable bed 3)Excellent continental breakfast 4)Great location! Easy to walk to many local attractions. We plan on staying here again and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a lovely place in Halifax.

I like "boutique" hotels, but I admit to some disappointment with the Halliburton. I must have rushed through various online reviews, so let me clarify for others. This is NOT an updated or modernly decorated boutique hotel. It's an older hotel, with old decor that feels a bit run down to me. The bathroom sink has no vanity around it, though an open front cabinet provides some shelves for your toiletries. The shower in our room has a bit of a musty smell to it. No curtains, just blinds, and the room is over a noisy street. Parking a few blocks away is tricky if you're driving anything larger than a mini-Cooper. Oddly placed steps here and there guarantee you'll trip at least once going into or out of your room, and up and downstairs. A small fridge and bar area in the room allow you to make coffee, though there are no heat or AC controls in the room for temperature settings. A tiny TV (16"?) gives you the news. Laundry service was prompt, with prices ranging from $4.55 for underclothes to $11.50 for shorts. Breakfast comes with the room, and was basic one - some bagels and toast, soft cooked eggs, fruit salad, a few cereals. Location is good for harbor or historic Barrington St sites, and you can walk to North End hot spots in about 15 minutes. Bearly's around the corner has good burgers.

After my first near sleepless night, I well prepared to give The Halliburton 1 star, to pack up and move to the Westin. But then the manager on duty listened to my complaint, apologized, upgraded me on the spot and moved my bags for me. [Insert sigh of relief] The breakdown based on the accommodation alone. The good: -A modest continental breakfast included -Free (although too weak for my impatient needs) wi-fi -cozy -cable tv -free water, coffee -an honour bar with a big bag of kettle chips -comfy pillows -super friendly staff And, because I must, the bad and ugly: -in the smaller double rooms (where I spent my first night), there's was no temperature control - Venetian blinds but no drapes = light at awful morning hours + pigeons clamouring to get into the room. Okay, maybe they weren't attempting a break in, but they were literally flopping, flapping and flipping against the window screen -The mouse which came through the raised door to the hallway and grossed me out so much that I'm still shuddering -Unsealed doors, which also let in light (and said mouse) -Keys and bolts that don't lock without force, kinda like in a house that's settled and unaligned. -Bathroom doorknobs that feel basically broken scaring me into the idea that I could get locked in the loo -Neutrogena amenities (boutique this is not) For what it's worth, The Halliburton is trying. The common areas have a homey feel, there's history here in these old townhouses which is what drew me to it in the first place, and the location is pretty good. But at $150 for the tiny double bed (not sure how much the queen suite was that I was moved into after my first night) it won't be winning my business again anytime soon.

The Halliburton is a great little boutique hotel within walking distance of Halifax's waterfront and just about everything a tourist would want to see in the city. The Halliburton has an upscale ambiance without feeling stuffy. The rooms are comfy and cozy. The staff was friendly and professional. The Halliburton has an old feel to it, but in a good way. Our meal at the in-house restaurant "Stories" was excellent. In short, if you're looking for a downtown Halifax hotel with some character, the Halliburton should be given your consideration.

I stayed at the Halliburton for two nights and was very happy with my stay. Check in was easy and fast and the girl checking me in was very helpful with recommendations. There is not an elevator so be prepared to climb up the steep steps to your room. The room I had was not very big but it was clean, comfortable and had everything I needed. The best thing about this hotel is the location. You can walk to everything. I did not take a taxi during my stay other than going to and from the airport. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, sights, and activities just within a few blocks.

The main house can be nice, but at least one of the other houses seem to be the red-headed step-children (see my pics of the bathroom). And whatever you do, do NOT book the so-called "Grand Suite" unless you enjoy living in a basement. First, the main house: the common areas are great - nice (though small) library, nice area for the continental breakfast (though the breakfast food is pedestrian), cool, old, grand staircase. W-fi in the main house is excellent. In the 3rd house none of my devices could get a signal worth using. We came here on our honeymoon and initially booked the Grand Suite, which is in the 3rd house down. We overlooked the $350/night (plus lots of tax) price tag. We walked in, took one look, and vowed to leave even if it meant going to some chain hotel. Why? Because THE "GRAND SUITE" IS IN A BASEMENT!" Well, technically, it's what I'd call "garden-level" or an "Englishment basement," meaning you're about 1/2 or 2/3 of the way underground. You have smallish windows up near the ceiling. The result is that you get very little natural light, no direct sunlight, and your view is of people's feet walking around outside. Neither the Haliburton's web site nor its staff when I booked the reservation told me this little detail. They should tell you what you're getting - a room in a basement - and the web site should make that clear. The general manager kindly switched us to a room in the main house. It was fine, but things like the bathroom are a little long in the tooth. No vanity, and a toilet and tub the color of which was in the house I grew up in during the 1970's. We stayed in another building another time, and the bathroom there was similarly sad. This is an okay botique hotel, and if you get a decent rate I think you'll enjoy it. But I would not pay top-end, and BEWARE the "Grand Suite!" One note: I forgot a very expensive item in the hotel and they were kind enough to mail it to me. They didn't have to do that, so I do thank them for it.

Great place. Charming in that way all the good boutique hotels hope they can pull off. The Halliburton does it quite successfully and we passed a very comfortable night here. Parking was super easy right in back. We didn't need the car as it was easy enough for a pair of fairly fit folk to walk up to the Citadel and the gorgeous public gardens. Couldn't quite swing the $$$$ for dinner at Stories, but there's no shortage of good places to eat nearby. (Check Yelp!) Easy walk to the waterfront and even with two cruise ships in town we enjoyed it very much and weren't overwhelmed by the masses. Halifax does tourism very well, and The Halliburton fits in perfectly. We'd stay again.
