"Venture to Pura Vida (a catchall Costa Rican phrase, meaning “pure life”) for a low-key luxury retreat at the Harmony Hotel. This intimate 24-room getaway is owned by Johnson & Johnson descendant John S. Johnson III and his wife, Susan Short. The surfer-chic space is no frills, making it all the more endearing—a vibe you’ll feel throughout the majority of this sleepy surf town. The hotel has an outdoor yoga space cocooned in the jungle, a spa with a slew of treatments and casual shamanic healing ceremonies, and a pool, organic restaurant, and juice bar. If you want to escape the property, just walk for about five minutes and you'll hit the sprawling coastline and pristine beaches."

The Harmony Hotel, Nosara, Costa Rica - Explore & Book

"The Harmony Hotel isn't easy to reach, but it’s well worth the effort. An eco-hotel with exemplary credentials, it sits in the jungle of Nosara - a coastal town made up of 4 beaches - and a few yards behind one of the most stunning surf beaches on the Nicoya Peninsula, Playa Guicones. It’s become the place to stay for city-dwelling surfers and grown-up Bohos who are too old - and too well-off - to stay in a grungy surf shack, but still want the feeling of a stylish, authentic hotel. With its wood and wicker furniture, palm trees, freshwater swimming pool and open air/open-plan layout, the hotel has a 1950s Hawaiian resort feel. This is not, I emphasise, a luxury hotel: there are no plasma screen TVs or iPods in the 24 rooms, and service is more of the chat-at-the-breakfast-table variety than silent obedience. But if luxury means a healing centre, organic food, sunrise yoga on the beach before hitting the surf, a hotel with integrity, the sound of waves drifting you to sleep in a big comfy bed, and a tropical paradise, then Harmony would more than qualify as a top-notch destination. Highs A hotel in tune with nature - it's environmentally conscious, and set in tropical gardens, with howler monkeys, hummingbirds, iguanas all aroundThe vegetable patch serves the kitchen, food is organic, shower water is recycled, and the hotel contributes to local environmental and social projectsNew York levels of service delivered with ‘Tico’ charmRooms have private patios, hammocks and outdoor showersDirect access to the beach down a pathway crowded on both sides by bush that sings and twitches with lifeA protected (no building allowed) 6km white sand beach for yoga, surfing, shell collecting, nature walks, horse and bike riding and cold beers at sunset Lows An adventure to get there: most guests take a small plane from San José to Nosara. Once there, the pot-holed, jungle dirt tracks are only suitable for 4x4s. The dry season means dust on the roads, the wet season brings thick mudExpensive compared to other hotels in the area Power cuts are a frequent occurrenceWith its rip tides, Playa Guiones is more of a surfing beach than a swimming beachNosara is not so secret anymore: American retirees own many of the hotels, surf schools and restaurants" - Charlotte Sinclair

I participated in the breathwork class at Harmony and truly enjoyed the experience. The open air studio space was welcoming and clean and the instructor was incredible! I loved this workshop and wish I had more time to participate in another workshop! Disclaimer: This review is specifically for the class and yoga studio at Harmony, as I didn’t stay at the hotel.

Harmony hotel is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. The professionalism in service and customer care is something that I highly appreciate from the staff working here. I would especially like to thank Tyson and Aaron for taking such good care of me with a smile on their faces. I will definitely come back here.

This place is so much more than just a hotel — it’s a true retreat, nestled in a lush tropical forest right by the beach.||My family and I stayed in a Palma bungalow, which was spacious and very comfortable for the four of us. Our days were filled with surfing, yoga, meditation, and exploring the wide array of wellness offerings. The massages weren’t just relaxing; they felt deeply therapeutic, truly enhancing our sense of well-being.||Complementing all these experiences was the exceptional, healthy cuisine served at the hotel. Each meal felt like another step toward taking care of ourselves, nourishing both body and mind. After five days, we left feeling stronger, healthier, and genuinely recharged.||The atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed — barefoot chic at its best — while still maintaining top-tier service in every aspect. While some of the bathrooms could benefit from a modern refresh, they are large, spotless, and very comfortable, with fluffy towels and eco-friendly toiletries. Beds, pillows, and linens were truly five-star quality, and the healthy snacks and coffee provided in the room were a thoughtful touch.||I’ve already booked my return for next year — and I can’t wait!

The staff was excellent. The room was very clean and kept very clean. The yoga is excellent. I recommend Emily‘s and Julian‘s classes but pretty much all the classes to be honest. They’re all slightly different but excellent. The sauna and cold plunge are not to be missed. We loved that. We took a surf lesson with Hector from the Nosara surf school. And highly recommend him as well. Just walking on the beach in the morning and the evenings are wonderful. Go down to the beach at sunset and enjoy the vibe. The water is warm and clean and inviting. Lastly, the food in the restaurant was so good that we didn’t even venture out. There’s a wide variety it’s very healthy and clean. And delicious. The hotel is ideally situated for a walk into town if you want. And there are restaurants all around it if you feel like venturing out. Between doing all the yoga and the sauna and cold plunge and walking on the beach and surfing we were very happy to stay put.

We spent three nights here in a private room. The staff is beyond gracious and hospitable, we enjoyed everyone we interacted with. Room was lovely and bed was super comfortable. Best part was the private outdoor lounge with hammock and shower. Restaurant was good, not the most authentic meals but everything was yummy. We used the plunge pool and sauna everyday and loved the ease of scheduling.

The Harmony Hotel can be a restful retreat in a great location. The grounds and staff are absolutely lovely. The restaurant serves fresh delicious food, and the staff were genuinely a pleasure to see every day at breakfast. The hotel is well located between the beach and shops. There’s a relaxing spa where we had wonderful massages, a juice bar and an open air yoga studio, which we didn’t use because it was too humid. There’s a nice sized pool, that’s almost too warm to be refreshing. But terrific bird watching. The hotel is not luxurious, but there are some nice amenities such as outdoor shower and outdoor patio with hammock. There are no televisions in the guest rooms. We were in room 10, which I would not recommend. It’s close to the restaurant and next door to service staff and can be noisy in both the morning and at night. Unfortunately for us, there were two families with noisy young children who used the pool most of the day. It was impossible to escape the yelling anywhere near the pool or restaurant, so we left the property quite a bit. We typically swim laps in the morning before breakfast but were unable to because the children largely monopolized the pool. The hotel is able to provide a car and driver for excursions away from the immediate area. We used the service for two dinners and would definitely recommend. It’s a great location and a well thought out property, but I’m not sure we would stay there again.

We love boutique hotels but this one rises above most. Nestled in lush greenery, right off the beach, Harmony offers a unique retreat. Every aspect of the hotel is quaint, beautiful and surrounded by stunning plant scapes. The rooms are incredibly well-done. The outdoor patio with shower and seating are a dream.||The staff is warm and welcoming. The food is very good and reasonably priced. The hotel has beautiful spaces for guests to enjoy the outdoors and take in this beautiful setting.||We HIGHLY recommend the Harmony Hotel. It will leave you feeling relaxed and comfortable.|You’ll be able to soak in the natural beauty of the region in your own little jungly and intimate hotel.

Harmony Hotel is great! So peaceful and so nestled in the jungle. Great people! Great accommodations! If you can’t stay there, have dinner there! Food is fantastic and so fresh. If you can’t have dinner have a smoothie! They’re great too. Or grab a yoga class. Their yoga deck is so nice and serene! You won’t regret it
