Alright, I have a confession to make: I'm not really a fan of the Harry Potter franchise. I never read the books. I've seen all the movies, but honestly, that was due to an obligation to my adopted Korean daughter, who was a massive fan of both the literary and film versions, and during her overseas homestay with us, the final movie (Deathly Hallows part 2) was released. It was my fatherly duty to catch up on the previous seven beforehand, so I knew what the hell was going on. By the time I realized what I needed to accomplish, I had only a week to do it. Yeah, I had to marathon all seven prior movies in as many days. Well, I did it, and found myself enjoying them more than I had expected to. They're no LoTR, but they're still fun, entertaining flicks.
My second (third, fourth and fifth) experience(s) as a Harry Potter "poseur" came in the form of an annual pub crawl in Seattle, where I and my friends, pledged to our chosen houses (Ravenclaws, ca-caw, ca-caw!), migrate to various watering holes in downtown Seattle, buy each other drinks, engage in trivia, compare cosplays...you get the idea. Throw alcohol into the mix, and suddenly, I like the franchise quite a bit more!
Thus, as I passed through King's Cross station, I knew there was no way I would be able to skip Platform 9 3/4 without some evidence of my commitment, sacrifice, and increasing appreciation of the Harry Potter universe. That, and my sister-in-law would never forgive me if I didn't get her souvenir. I donned a ridiculously long Ravenclaw scarf, grabbed my wand (innuendo unintended), and pushed my cart full of luggage through the secret wall, pausing to leap excitedly (and mug the nearby camera) before emerging on the other side.
Secret wizard train station? Hogwarts? Nope. Gift shop. But a really nice one. The kind that fanboys and fangirls swoon over. I purchased an official "invitation" gift set to attend Hogwarts, wrapped expertly by the staff, and trekked to the nearest post office, to mail it so said sister-in-law. I expect her squeals of surprise and delight upon receiving it could be heard here by the staff, from all the way across the Atlantic. By then, I was back home, and I sure as heck heard them!
Who's the best brother-in-law? Oh yeah, that would be me.
