Fish Out of Water

"About four months after the incident at Chernobyl, and not long after American bombs landed in Libya, in 1986, Oxford resident Bill Heine had a 26-foot shark sculpture erected on his roof. Using cranes, Heine and sculptor John Buckley mounted the shark head first onto the roof in the middle of the night. That morning (the 41st anniversary of the dropping of nuclear bomb “Fat Man” on Nagasaki), the headless shark began delighting curious onlookers—but not town officials. Heine said that the shark was assembled and properly placed to speak out against nuclear weapons, Chernobyl, and more. Whether art, protest, or, per rumors, a crafty disguise for an antenna, the City Council tried to get Heine to remove the shark on the grounds that it was unsafe. After a thorough inspection, however, it was found that the shark was indeed properly installed and safe. The dispute continued and was appealed by Heine in a letter to the Secretary of State for the Environment; again, it was found that the shark was causing no harm, and one inspector termed it “unique and brilliant,” according to The New Yorker. Since then, the bizarre shark-sculpture-anti-nuclear-armament-protest has remained in its head first dive into the home, which is now available to rent via Airbnb." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

While I was in Oxford this is one of places I wanted to visit. The house is located near the road. I felt amazing when I saw the shark. While you are in Oxford, you can definitely have a look at the shark

If you're visiting Oxford you have to see it, it looks a lot better visiting than pictures, couldn't believe how BIG it was, and the details are great, glad we saw it, the story about it is good and worth a read.

It is quite interesting in that there is a large shark sticking into an otherwise normal house. That is all there is to see. If you are passing through Headington it is worth a brief diversion but it won't keep you occupied for long!

A jaws dropping experience. The best shark in Oxford. Superb quality. Right next to the John Radcliffe hospital too in case of accidental injury. At first I was cautious but now I can safely say that no other shark in the Cotswolds had such an impact on me.

It's a shark in the roof. Not much else to say really.

A very unexpected and so totally brilliant and engaging piece of sculpture, summing up one’s worst nightmares of being chased by Jaws, and having to submit a hefty insurance claim! Worth a detour if you’re in the area…easy to pull up and take a photograph without finding an official parking space, if done discreetly!

Awesome lil bit of artwork. Drove to Oxford just to see this. Little bit of Googling found out that this has been here since the very early 90s! Very beautiful artwork with a strong message about stopping the War (back then). Lots of local places to visit in this area so you can really male a day out of it.

Very random sight to behold in Oxford. I thought as I’m in Oxford then I’d stop by and have a look. Very surreal sight to see but worth it as so unusual. Just casually seeing a shark sticking out a roof of a house - not something you see every day hey ? Easy to pull over if you’re in a car and jump out and take a snap or two.
