The Here After is a low-key cocktail bar which not so secretly boasts a full dinner menu full of very good food though the portions are quite small for the price. With the closure of another formidable cocktail bar in town, Hudson was due for a new spot. The Here After is both sophisticated and down to earth, a balance that very much matches the vibe at other Hudson mainstays.
We came here for dinner at around 8:15 on a Thursday night. We had planned to go to Lil Deb's a few doors down but they were unexpectedly closed so we needed to quickly pivot. We had come here last month with a group for a nightcap after dinner and I vaguely remembered our server mentioning then that they had food. Considering that the kitchen here is tiny, the variety of offerings here is impressive. It is inconsistent as far as execution goes (some stuff great, other stuff meh, and some stuff in the middle), but the talent is there.
The drink menu here is vast so good luck making your choices here. We each got two drinks, one that we loved and one that we had mixed feelings about. My partner's first drink was a seasonal one so it's not on the online menu, and while he said it was delicious he couldn't taste any alcohol in it which made it feel like he was just drinking juice. My first drink was the Casablanca (dry gin, turkish fig-infused vermouth, walnut liqueur, orange bitters, cracked cardamon), like a nutty Martinez variation. Classy but unique. My second drink, the The House Dirty (gin infused with oregano, manzanilla sherry, salt-preserved lemon brine), had to potential to be great but there was something about to oregano infusion that gave the drink a strange aftertaste. My partner got the Hellcat (mezcal infused with ancho and pasilla peppers, strawberry amaro, guava, lemon, agave) which we both loved. During our first trip here I remember I tried the Trail Blazer (single malt whiskey, pine liqueur, juniper and rosemary syrup, charred lemon, smoke rosemary) which was delicious and woodsy - any time I see a drink with pine liqueur I need to try it.
Food-wise, we got a mix of veggies and proteins and got to sample a good chunk of the menu. Other than one dish we really liked everything, but I will say that the portions are quite small for the prices. So keep that in mind when you order, especially if you are going in very hungry. Eats, below:
Endive Salad w/ smoky brown butter vinaigrette, pickled shallot, dill: A-
One of the very small dishes but still tasty. An endive salad with a good vinaigrette is hard to beat.
Steak Tartare w/ egg yolk, herbs, guajillo chile, masa crackers: A
My partner and I are both very particular about steak tartare and we both loved this one. Delicate, not too heavy/dense, the subtlety of the herbs really elevating the overall flavor profile.
Roasted Squash: B
This one was a miss for me. This was half of a yellow squash, halved length-wise, sitting on a plate in a bath of sauce. The sauce was decent but the preparation and concept were uninspired.
PEI Mussels w/ yuzu, chili, herbs: A-
Solid mussels dish, only an A- because I felt the broth could've been seasoned more. But a solid helping of mussels. We ordered the bread in part to sop up some of the extra broth (oddly, the bread arrived at the end of the meal instead of the beginning but we made the best of it).
Trout in Escabeche w/ herb yogurt, mizuna: A
The other standout of the night and also the only dish I got a picture of. It's steelhead trout so don't be surprised if you order it and it at first glance resembles salmon. The fish was cooked perfectly and the sauce was absolutely heavenly. I could eat this for every meal.
Panna Cotta: A-
This only receives an A- because of the portion. Laughably small, especially because we were splitting it. But what was there was very good, so there's that!
