5 New Ski Retreats Around the World to Visit in Winter 2023 - AFAR

"Japan is home to more than 500 ski resorts and world renowned powder—so soft and fluffy you’ll almost want to wipe out. Niseko may be the most famous of Japan’s ski resorts, but it’s dominated by powder aficionados from Australia, China, Hong Kong, and Singapore and arguably the least Japanese of the country’s ski resorts. For a downhill experience with fewer international crowds, point your skis toward Nagano, where modernist newcomer Hiramatsu Karuizawa Miyota opened in 2021 with 28 guest rooms and nine villa suites. Sprawled across 14 acres in the foothills of the Okuchichibu Mountains, the resort is a 10-minute drive from Miyota train station and 20 minutes from the mountain resort of Karuizawa. Parquet wood walls and floor-to-ceiling windows lend an urbane penthouse vibe, while spacious balconies, private stone onsen baths, kitchenettes, yoga and massages on demand, and dog runs promise to make long stays more enjoyable. Don’t miss the French Japanese cuisine from Bocuse-trained chef Akio Yanagihara." - Adam H. Graham

Post-Olympics, Japan’s New Hotels Will Be Worth Traveling For

"Having cut their teeth in the gourmet restaurant business, the Hiramatsu group has launched a family of European-style ryokans across Japan with two recent openings, including last year’s grand opening of Hiramatsu Kyoto. The latest addition to the growing number of Hiramatsu properties is in Miyota, in central Nagano, a quick train ride west of Tokyo, where locals go for onsens and leisurely mountain hikes. There are nine villas and 28 fully-equipped rooms with their own private Japanese hot spring on terraces with sweeping views of Nagano, home of the 1998 Winter Olympics. Adrenaline-seeking powder heads will love their off-piste ski sessions during the day before nesting back in their room when the sun goes down. The pet-friendly hotel has two restaurants—Le Grand Lys and La Lumiere Claire—with chef Akio Yanaghiara bringing both Japanese and French flavors together well at both restaurants."

Very nice and swanky hotel. Suggest to go as a couple or family for relaxation. There's a onsen in the room and the beverages in the room are great especially the apple and peach juice they provide. Only the alcoholic drinks need to be paid. The onsen gets the water from nearby and it can be open air with the doors opened. The restaurant food was also good but they kept forgetting my dishes. Other than that it was a nice hotel with amazing service

I literally nearly cried when I had to leave. Such a magical experience in the snow. Stunning rooms and the atmosphere is amazing. The campground ⛺️ was a surprise and so very beautiful. Staff were lovely and the in room Onsen was A1! Loved the pajamas and lounge wear. Food service needs a bit more attention for the quality of hotel. For example no breakfast menu, dishes just served. I also mentioned my dietary requirements twice and was served a dish I couldn’t eat. No big deal but at this price point shouldn’t happen. Would love to visit again and have more time to explore nearby.

My husband and i stayed at room 207, forest suite for 6 nights from Jan 30th to Feb 5th. From the very start, I was already happy with the service from reservations. My enquiry email was answered very fast with accurate and good information. Before my trip there, Kaito Yamamoto wrote to us to tell us how to get to your hotel safely and i was very happy to have the mapcode from her and also she shared that it was along Asama Sunline Road. This was very helpful as it was winter and we arrived at about 6pm so it was dark already. Throughout our entire hotel stay, all of your staff are very helpful, kind and service is very good. Housekeeping - everyday the room is cleaned very well and very efficient. The room and onsen and bathroom is very very clean and well maintained. My husband uses the onsen nightly so he is very pleased. And the housekeeping is very thoughtful - they will place bottles of water (because we drink a lot) beside the bed and also with a glass. The turn down service is also very good - giving us sweet treats, little pillow mists for our stay etc. You have a wonderful housekeeping team - pls share our praise with them. Reception - everyday we are asked when we are going and if we need more information etc and when turndown service can be. The ladies and gentlemen there always have a good smile for us when we leave and when we return. The gentlemen helping us with the car always have our car ready for us when we are leaving without us asking for it. And they helped us park our car too nightly. This is not a service that we find in every hotel in japan, not even the FUFU group. This is very much appreciated because its cold and the carpark is further away so my husband appreciates this help. Breakfast - the breakfast crew is very good as well - serves us our meal very promptly and the meals are always hot and fresh. We had japanese breakfast every morning and the food was so good and delicious and the fishes are done very well. In fact my husband doesnt eat mackerel at all but he declared that your mackerel is very well seasoned and done. He would like the recipe! :) If we have to nitpick, the only flaw i see is the italian restaurant. We had dinner there the 1st night and the food is disappointing. We have travelled to Italy even more than Japan and the standard of italian food here is not good. I had the seafood broth and the mussels were not very fresh and portions are too small. That is why we dont eat at the italian restaurant nightly - its not tasty. Thank you for such a wonderful week at Nagano and for your wonderful staff. We will definitely be back and stay at your hotel again. If i can give your hotel 8 stars out of 5, i would!

Stayed in Deluxe twin with forest view and hot spring. Impressive luxury hotel with great room layout. Staff service super friendly. But the choices of uncoordinated ingredients and poor cooking skill killed the French+Japanese dining experiences. This is rather a great disappointment despite all the ingredients freshly selected. Luxury Hospitality key to success lies in maintaining consistency. Good cuisine form an important key factor to attract returning customers. Hope the management will explore to achieve high-quality cuisine or "Haute Cuisine" to synchronise with the luxury hotel brands.

It's the best luxurious onsen hotel I stayed in Japan, although their English ability is very limited, still they tried hard to communicate and it's not an issue to me during my stay. Excellent service, very attentive staff, great food and amazing view. It even has a music room with a turntable and a good collection of vinyl records. It's located in a small town 30 mins away from Karuizawa, if you want a quite vacation, this is the place for you !

Gorgeous hotel located in the Japanese countryside. This is a "resort" style hotel with a hot spring bath located in each room or villa. Dinner and breakfast are included in the room rate and there are two restaurants to choose from, Italian and French. The food served here is wonderful. The wine list is large and well priced with a French focus. The rooms are very spacious and immaculately clean. Turn down service is provided. The in-room onsen is beautiful and the bathrooms are extremely large. Above all, the service at the hotel was 5 star. This is our second stay at a Hiramatsu property and this excellent higher level of service is consistent.

I had the pleasure of staying at this property for a week. Located in the picturesque town of Karuizawa, this hotel offers a serene and luxurious retreat for those seeking relaxation and tranquility. This is about a 3 hour private car drive from the NRT airport in Tokyo. One of the highlights of my stay was the remarkable 2nd-floor suite. Upon entering the suite, I was immediately struck by its quietness and spaciousness. The suite was designed with comfort in mind, featuring a tastefully decorated living area, a cozy bedroom, and a well-appointed bathroom. The peace and quiet of the suite allowed me to unwind and truly escape from the outside world. After a long day of touring the area, the in room onsen (hot spring) at the hotel was a perfect way to rejuvenate. The soothing hot water and serene ambiance provided a much-needed respite for my tired body. You can set the temperature and drink a bottle of Champagne in the comfort of your room. The wrap-around balcony in the suite provided breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The views were simply mesmerizing and added an extra layer of tranquility to my stay. While the hotel is located a bit outside the main tourist areas, it is well worth the journey. Most of the sights in the area are approximately 1.5 to 2 hours away, so having a car is a must. However, the secluded location of the hotel ensures a peaceful and serene atmosphere, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The Hiramatsu Karuizawa Miyota Hotel also takes great care of its guests' well-being. They provide high-quality skin and hair products, ensuring that every aspect of your stay is luxurious. The staff members deserve special praise for their exceptional service. They consistently went above and beyond to ensure that I was comfortable and had everything I needed. The hotel also has an on site washer and dryer to use for long trips. Finally, I cannot fail to mention the pristine condition of the property. The hotel is meticulously maintained, and every corner is spotless. The attention to detail is evident in every aspect, from the immaculate rooms to the well-manicured gardens.
