Had a fantastic stay. Mark was extremely helpful over the phone and saved a pet free room for me because of my allergies. Room was very clean and quiet. The location is perfect, walking distance to a lot of good restaurants and bars. The hotel is definitely older, but in a good and charming way. I wish they had light blocking curtains in the rooms, but everything else was lovely!

I stayed here for about a week a year ago. They had to move me around a few rooms because they all had pretty significant problems (refrigerator didn't work, bathroom drain wouldn't drain at all, etc etc). There was a pretty clear and awful mismanagement problem but staff was friendly and willing to do what they could to help make my stay pleasant. Fast forward to today and they've literally doubled their nightly rate without having done much of any work on the place, as a new management company apparently bought and runs the place now? This place will now be a hard pass from me, even though my first time there was still pleasant enough because of the location and the friendly front desk staff.

Google
What a great place! Staff was very accomodating and the other guests were friendly. When we had trouble getting in after hours, another guest, Rosie, let us in. She kept asking us if we saw her husband, which we found a tad strange, but we told her we'd keep an eye out. We wanted to thank her, but she seemed to disappear.

Google
The employees claim historic designation makes updates to this hotel near impossible, yet updates are sorely needed to make this place hospitable. Really shouldn’t be open until a complete overhaul is done! While the potential is there with the pedigree of former guests and historic artifacts scattered around, the hotel is majorly lacking in every category. Cleanliness is a major issue. The smell throughout the floor and room was of low-budget apartment living. The bathroom had a discarded contact stuck to the wall and pubic hair and urine on the toilet. The floor hasn’t been swept or mopped in quite a while. The lighting was very dim with several lights not working. Our room was missing a working remote, outlets were scarce and furniture was threadbare and uncomfortable. The only source of temperature control was a window A/C that needed a filter change. There were flimsy blankets and an unusable shower/ tub with the dirt and grime. All this being shared, the price was $88/night (we had a 20% discount from the University of WY as a prospective student) so I didn’t expect luxury, BUT…the thing that irked me the most was the online marketing which portrayed this place as such. It advertised a restaurant (not operating,) a bar (only open weekends,) breakfast (none) and gorgeous, comfortable rooms. We booked based on this and by the time we arrived, it was late, we were tired and didn’t have the energy to cancel and book elsewhere (parking is offsite and it was snowing and freezing out). I wish we had!

Google
This hotel is disgusting. Pictures on line look absolutely nothing like real life. They must’ve been taken in the early 90’s when it was remodeled and hasn’t been deep cleaned since. They charged my card an extra $200 cleaning fee because my room “smelled like smoke”. The entire hotel smelled like an ashtray straight out of a dive bar. Avoid at all costs. You’re better off sleeping in your car. I’ve tent camped with better accommodations.

I stayed here about 12yrs ago and really enjoyed the experience. This time was vastly different. My room was dark (the window was covered over), musty, and hugely dated. The bed was like sleeping on a trampoline with the thinnest linens ever. I had to put the coffee maker on the floor to use it as the cord was too short to reach an outlet. I am ok with the historical aspect of the hotel and didn't mind the datedness but there isn't any reason the beds can't be more comfortable. I did find my room clean though. I did pay much more for this exhausting stay than I feel was warranted. I fear this was my last stay at the Plains.

Google
The staff, The Best. Has a nice bar, quiet clean rooms, and a soon to be open restaurant. Cheyenne is a loud city. But the folks here keep thing on the down low. This isn't a fancy hotel. But considering it's over 100 years old, I love the original floor tiles and rustic west feel. The prices a fairly decent too! These folks have taken good care of us. I highly recommend visiting the Historic Hotel.

Google
I was quoted a rate of 139 for 2 days. The manager said the rate increased on weekends and charged an extra 10 dollars.in addition there was a problem with the sink and the water would not shutt off and ran all night. The mangers comment was that it was an old hotel. He was rude and unprofessional. He stated he was from the bronx! It showed.

Yelp
I was summoned for US District Court jury duty last week in Cheyenne. Despite reading recent reviews, I booked a "one- night or one week" stay there because it's in the center of Cheyenne, walkable to everything, and full of history. I'm so glad I did. If you are somebody who sees historic as "outdated", this hotel is probably not for you, but the sheets were clean, the water pressure was good, and the hotel staff was so accommodating with restaurant advice, historic tales, and even "if anything in your room is not up to par, let us know and we'll fix it or get you another". Everybody is short staffed these days and this staff is pulling their weight- concierging, accommodating, cleaning, and decorating.... they are putting their hearts and souls into this place, Unfortunately I was dismissed from the jury- I wanted to stay for the week. The historic elevator is teeny- tiny-awesome, and the tiles are old but charming. If you are somebody more drawn to the Chelsea Hotel than Hampton Garden Inn, you'll love it. If you require usb plug ins, bring your own adapter. They do have wifi and lots of charm. p.s. Ernest Hemingway stayed here. 4 stars/not 5 to scare away those who don't cherish experience over perfection.

Yelp
The manager was able to provide me with a full refund and was very apologetic for the issues we encountered during our stay. The interaction I had with the manager made me hopeful that with better cleaning and care, the hotel has the potential to improve. I appreciated them being accountable and agreeing to refund us.

Yelp
This is an old hotel. It lacks a lot of the current amenities. It was still a very pleasant stay. Clean. Beautiful interior. Historic. Comfortable bed. Quiet. Friendly staff. Good Wifi. Ice machines. Mark, the evening/night manager, a recent transplant to Cheyenne, offered excellent recommendations on what to do and where to eat. He was so accommodating, friendly and willing to share what he knew about Cheyenne. The hotel has a great location. Just about anything you want to do is within walking distance. We found free street parking right by the hotel each evening, and did not have to park in the Hotel's parking lot a block away. The room was clean, the bathroom a bit dated, but functional. Given the location and the friendliness of the staff, I would gladly stay here again should our travels take us to Cheyenne. This was a much better experience than the standard tourist chain hotels -- historic and charming.

Chris M.

Yelp
I sure hope the ownership changes and someone with pride buys it. It could be quite charming. The black mold, filthy floors, lack of grout in the bathroom, old, chipped paint, coffee pot with too short a cord, no accessible plugs for charging phone by bed, CPAP machine, restaurant is closed, and general lack of charming antiques except for the lobby. Super loud A/C Unit in window, uncomfortable bed. Honestly, I was really looking forward to staying here. Won't be again.

Yelp
DO NOT STAY HERE. It's NOT what the website shows!!! I would love to rate this place a quarter star but that's not possible. We booked in advance based on the hotel website. The place looked like basic rooms with a quaint area. The room we received had mold on the ceiling, raggedy towels, dirty pillows and bedding (crusty blanket!), and a door lock that looked like it had been broken through. Nails were still sticking out of the trim around the busted lock/entry. The pillows were stained and the extras in the closet were stained and without pillow cases. We requested another room. It was better, but still had crusty blankets, questionable pillow (again dirty and without cases?). We thought this room was a far cry better than the previous until we closed the curtains: blood? Fecal material? At best, food? Additionally, trying to get a straight answer about parking from anyone from the front desk was a comedy of errors: everyone acted as if they'd never heard the questions we were asking, as there is no parking on the premises. DO NOT STAY HERE.

Ira W.

Yelp
The website for this hotel is very deceiving. While you step back in time when you walk in, there is no restaurant or bar which means you have to leave to get food. We stayed on the fifth floor and could hear all the traffic from the road. The wall heating unit was loud and constantly turned on and off. We're glad we're not spending a second night. The best feature of the hotel is the location. We walked to the Rib and Chop restaurant which was excellent. Plenty of stores as you're in the city. If I was in the real estate business I would consider buying this place and turning it into a multi-use building with shopping and apartments. The biggest problem would be parking. There isn't any.

Michelle D.

Yelp
Old hotel. Nice lobby with many western & historical artifacts. No restaurant or bar. No parking. No pool. Hotel is trying to sublet bar & restaurant.

Pita S.

Yelp
It's Historic charm is what attracted us to stay here. We stayed one night on the 4th floor. Room was comfortable but the downside was the noise of the AC unit and street traffic. I guess street racing on a Friday night is a thing. The bathroom needed updating with a moderately chipped tub. We enjoyed the recently opened bar and the owner was very personable. The location is perfect! We walked to both close dinner and breakfast dining options.

Yelp
My wife and I checked in to the Historic Great Plains Hotel on October 2 planning to stay two nights. We have stayed in historic hotels before so I expected quirky. I was excited about the prospect of staying in yet another piece of history. What I did not expect was how dirty, run down and poorly run the hotel was. I wish we had taken a clue from the closed restaurant and the miscellaneous pieces of dirty restaurant equipment strewn in what must have once been the restaurant to the right of the front door. The lobby was in a disarray, but it appeared that someone was attempting to decorate for the season. (The effort would have been better spent cleaning.) The restaurant was not the only area downstairs that was blocked and unsafe, the hallway with the "collection of antique items" was blocked for some reason not known to me. We checked in and went to our room on the second floor. At first, I was distracted by the lovely, old architecture. It was only after we got to our room, I began to recognize that the hotel was not quirky, it was dirty. The old worn carpet in our room was so stained that I could not imagine putting my feet on it. There was one soiled chair, a king bed and an apartment sized refrigerator. The small window air conditioning unit was blocking any view one might have had but the windows were so desperately in need of washing that I don't think that it would have mattered, you could barely see out anyway and the view was of some un-housed people who had congregated on the street corner. I pulled back the fitted sheet to discover a stained mattress that had yellowed with age. I immediately began to check for bed bugs. I will say in all honesty that I did not find any. The carpet in the hallway was so stained that it was difficult to determine the exact color. Dust was thick on the furniture and the baseboards. We checked out of the hotel that afternoon and moved to another location. We did not expect reimbursement for the first night's lodging. We chalked that up to a lesson learned. We are still waiting for reimbursement of the second night's lodging. It is my sincere hope that if we don't get our money back the hotel will at least use it for cleaning supplies and someone who knows how to use a vacuum cleaner and dust cloth. I wish I had taken pictures, but it was never my intention to write a review. We left there hoping that the owners would find a way to clean and restore the hotel and that it would be the crown jewel of downtown Cheyenne that it should be but now realize that they have no intention of doing so. Word to the wise, ask to see your room before you give them your credit card.

Yelp
This place is amazing and beautiful! Kimberly at the front was extra special and accommodating! We will definitely be back here. The inside is so full of history! Everyone at front desk was such a pleasure!

Yelp
Okay. Background: week long road trip, 11 states, 4 hotels, 2 very tired travelers trying to outrun an ice storm. Historic hotels appeal to us, see The Mining Exchange and Hotel Bothwell. We hoped for similar here. Hugely disappointed in the conditions, but like another reviewer we think someone just needs to love this place. It has character and great stories, the staff were absolutely wonderful and friendly and very concerned about guests security. The building itself needs some tlc and the housekeeping staff needs some motivation. Someday, I hope this Diamond in the rough gets the right investors and gets polished up.

Jen J.

Yelp
Ok folks... You can stay in a Hilton, Ramada, Mariott, whatever whatever EVERYWHERE else you go. In Cheyenne, you can stay in a living museum. Sure, the paint is peeling a bit and the shower exhaust fan may or may not be functional. But the rooms are clean, the staff are delightful, and meandering through the history is priceless. Stay here. Seriously.

Lance J.

Yelp
If they offered -5 stars I'd give less. I stayed one night and the front desk people were absolutely rude. I was told first off I needed to have any visitor I had fill out a visitor application before they could visit and they needed to be approved. A back ground check for a visitor? Second the maids didn't do a satisfactory job in cleaning the room before hand. I went to retrieve my shoe from under the bed the same day I checked in and found a pair of woman's pants with crusty panties attached them next to a used container of ASTRO glide (lube). Um yuck..... also I'm pretty sure the toilet water was yellow from urine. Also was expected to pay 300 deposit

Yelp
Historic translates into Old and Rundown. Add in the lack of on site parking and you have a total waste of money and time.

Sarah B.

Yelp
Booked a room online through Booking.com, then noticed that it stated that Cheyenne locals couldn't stay there. Recently moved to Casper, but still have Cheyenne IDs. We own a few properties in Cheyenne and needed one night to do some business in town. My husband decided to call and check if we needed to cancel. The owner stated that "Cheyenne people are trashy and disgusting. It's my policy." He then said that he would be willing to let us stay there if we gave him $200 cash. No wonder this place is falling apart, it has an awful owner. He's ruining his own business. Don't waste your time. Find a better hotel with a decent staff. We just always wondered what this place was like so we figured one night wouldn't hurt.

David R.

Yelp
We made our choice online based on this being a historic hotel and that it was in downtown Cheyenne. We were 1 day after Frontier Days, but our room rate was still $225 fir the nite. The lobby is charming and exudes what we expected for a Cheyenne Wyoming historic hotel. The elevator ( we were given a room on the 5th floor) was also charming and tiny. Tacky explanation posted on paper inside. The charm ended there. Our room was small was not very clean. Spots on towels, tub/shower looked like it needed a good scrubbing. But we didn't find or see and bugs. The window unit A/C was blowing slightly cool air, but was fairly useless. We were exhausted from a long drive, so we put up with the room. Sad that a historic hotel cannot even manage to have clean rooms, nevermind that updates are sorely needed.

Blake C.

Yelp
We checked into this hotel while traveling. After seeing and smelling the room, the stains, and what looked like dead bugs under the mattresses, we promptly left. When I tried to cancel at the front desk after only being in the room for less than five minutes, they said they couldn't refund me for the room. We left anyways. Horrible customer service.

David T.

Yelp
I enjoyed the old time ambiance of the hotel. The appointments stay true to the 100+ year history of the hotel. Staff was friendly. The hotel restaurant's breakfast was good and the bar with live music was fun. The only bad things about my stay was the water pressure on the shower was pretty low.

Kelly S.

Yelp
Just don't stay here. I love historical buildings. I was excited to stay here until we got here, and then I wanted to find the nearest place that was not here. The room was tiny. Beds were uncomfortable. Loading and unloading your luggage is a pain. There are only a few places up front you can park & then your car will end up over a block from you. I have been up since 3 am due to the warmth & uncomfortable bed & pray our vehicle was safe last night. The pictures make it look better than it actually is.

Michael O.

Yelp
The location is convenient but DO NOT STAY AT RHIS HOTEL!! I got bed bug bites so that enough to tell you how bad it is. The first sign should have been when the toilet was not bolted down.

Anne S.

Yelp
Love a historic hotel! The staff was great and the rooms were nice. But I will warn you, you are staying in a hotel that is over 100 years old so if you are expecting a room like you would get at the chain hotels you are going to be disappointed. They have done everything to keep it comfortable & some what modern without getting rid of the old world charm and history. I could roam this hotel for hours looking at the pictures , plaques & displays. You really do feel like your stepping back in history. At first I couldn't figure out why the elevator was so tiny and then I saw the plaque explain that it was intentionally made that small to keep drunk cowboys from trying to take their horses up to the room. lol

Jessica L.

Yelp
what a charming location walking distance from all the places we wanted to visit. The service was excellent and we loved being at a renovated historic location. Highly recommend!

Alan O.

Yelp
UPDATE: The restaurant is now called Taste of the Plains. The items are named after Roaring '20s gangsters and federal agents like Eliot Ness. This is the Ma Barker hot roast beef on a bed of mashed. huge portion for $10.50. I liked having the toast on the side. I highly recommend the Plains update the Yelp page for the restaurant. It's still listed as the Conestoga.

Bobbie F.

Yelp
I wouldn't even give this place one star ABSOLUTLEY DISGUSTING and the staff is more than horrific the room they gave me had dirty water in the bath tub and holes i. the blankets and the staff was nothing but rude and not accommodating! I can't even believe this place is still in business after what I witnessed stay away from this hotel at all cost! I've been in the hotel industry and if I had given a customer a room like that I would've been apologetic and asking what else I can do to accommodate them and make up for this mistake the staff did nothing but be rude and did not want to face any of the problems that occurred. in addition the front desk never told me about the cancellation policy or anything before I bought the room and then they threatened and said that they weren't gonna give me my money back even though there was dirty water and holes in the sheets and so they said that only the manager could give me a refund so I had to wait until the next day so the next day I come in and the staff is so rude he literally walks away from me while I'm talking to him tells me that the managers gonna be in meetings all day today so he probably won't get around to giving me my refund today that's unacceptable he called the manager and the manager said he'll be in a meeting till 12:30 that's all the staff had to do was call the manager and they didn't even want to do that this place has been nothing but a nightmare

Angela E.

Yelp
Our room was dirty, towels had a yellow stain on them and the extra pillow in the closet. We park our truck in the parking lot with our paper in the window and still got a sticker on our window! Saying it would be towed glad we got up early. Bar was not open and they lock the doors way before midnight to get back in! Would never recommend this place over price for frontier days

Carla S.

Yelp
DON'T STAY HERE!! My husband and I were in town for Frontier Days, celebrating our anniversary. Because it was Frontier Days, the price for the room was $500. per night (we stayed 2 nights, no other hotel in town had any availability) We were ok with that at first. No where on the website did it mention that the restaurant was permanently closed, or that the bar shut down at 5p. DURING FRONTIER DAYS?!?! The website had fabulous photos of wining and dining right on the premises. Also, the hotel amenities listed several things that didn't seem to exist...we didn't get 'daily housekeeping'....all we needed was clean towels, but when we returned to the hotel Thursday evening we had none. Front Desk was closed (not open 24hrs as advertised) so we couldn't even get them then. The next morning my husband showered and dried off with a hand towel. He went to the front desk to get a towel for me but was told they had to request one be brought up to the room. The towel never arrived so I showered and dried off with a used/wet hand towel. Not pleasant. The bathroom was small, to be expected of course. However, it would have been nice to have someplace to set a makeup bag and hair products besides the toilet. There is plenty of room next to the sink for a small set of shelves. When you're in the shower, the shower curtain sucks into the shower and sticks to your legs. A simple shower curtain with magnets would help with that. The floor of our bathroom was extremely dirty...dirt and hair mopped into the corners and not cleaned out. Towels were stained and yellow. Our room looked nothing like the photos. We had a large entertainment center in the corner, blocking the window. The ceiling had acoustic spray that was falling off. You could still see the water damage that they 'attempted' to repair. I know some things are out of ones control. However, at $500. a night, one would expect better. Especially after seeing the website....and you can't blame Covid anymore!!! Our anniversary wasn't ruined but it sure could have been better. I emailed the General Manager, gm@theplainshotel.com, requesting at least half of our 2-night, $1000. stay. They weren't even professional enough to acknowledge the email, let alone try to resolve anything.

Chris K.

Yelp
My wife and I stayed here July 22. The front desk was rude and gave us bad information about parking. We narrowly avoided having our car towed. Also, the room had an old window unit air conditioner that froze up. The room was ungodly hot. When we said something about it, the ever helpful desk said something to the effect that we shouldn't have adjusted the temperature below 75. Of course no one told us that before hand. The only good thing that I have to say about this place is that it was located on the route of the Frontier Days Parade. It's a shame that the staff was so lacking in customer service as the hotel itself is a historic looking building.

Nancy V.

Yelp
As with any Historic hotel, there are many pluses and minuses. I do not lower my score at all for those quirks and imperfections that are inherent in this type of establishment. The tiny elevator? An incovenience, but it works and is part of the Hotel's charm. The lack of electrical out lets? Same thing. A hotel built in 1911 did not anticipate our electronic age and the need to plug in at least three electronic devices. So what were the pluses? The room we had was huge. We made a reservation last minute so one of the few rooms left was a double queen suite. It was a real suitewith two separate rooms - one was a sitting room with comfortable overstuffed chairs and a couch. There was also a mini fridge, microwave and desk. The bedroom was also spacious. The beds were very comfortable and the room, for the most part, was clean. Some of the minuses - Check-in was a little convoluted. I had reserved the room on line and they had a hard time finding my reservation. The front desk staff were a little short with us and said they were completely filled up. It was not the fine hotel expeience I expected. One of the reviewers noted that it was remodeled about 20 years ago. I would say it needs another update. The room, while comfortable, has odd pieces of furniture that look like 70's era cast offs bought in a yard sale. There were insufficient cups and the coffee maker had not been cleaned out from the last guest. The electrical outlets were mostly inaccessable, overloaded or inoperable. The shower was weak and tepid. There is also no dedicated parking for the hotel. There is a public garage a few blocks away that is free for out of state vehicles, but shlepping bags is a bit of a hassle. The hotel seems geared to an older clientel. While I like the historic feel to it, some upgrading may make it a bit more attracive to a younger crowd.

Caesar K.

Yelp
Stay away if you can afford to! I don't mind staying at historic properties, but this place could only be described at borderline dilapidated. The suite room I checked in to had no working hot water. Tried to use room phone to call the front desk, wasn't working. We had to try four other rooms before finding a fifth and much smaller non-suite room with working hot water. Red rust ran from the tap. I stay at hotels often enough to not worry, but I didn't feel secure going to sleep. I'm not nit-picky about cleaniless, but the room made me compelled to check for bed bugs. Room was dingy and had plexiglass screwed over the windows to keep them from opening. Bed was reasonably comfortable. Very poor customer service when I tried to resolve a bill mismatch due to the room change.

Nicole S.

Yelp
This hotel is definitely historic and old. I wasn't too impressed with the room. The shower didn't drain well and the bed wasn't very comfortable. The location to downtown though was great. Walking distance to the shops and places to eat. Also staff was really nice.

Michael H.

Yelp
When we were here during Covid, it was at 5% occupancy of 164 rooms so it felt like a ghost town. Staff was at 4 people. Doors locked, reception closed, I had to call a number when I arrived, there was extra toilet paper and towels on the reception counter in case you needed more. Curiously, there was _no soap_ in the room (or other toiletries) and no Purell in the lobby. This is a beautiful 1911 money-pit of a hotel that originally served the historic train station. It looked like it takes ongoing renovations. The stained glass ceiling is incredible. It is wonderfully located, though with busy streets on both sides and no parking. Well-priced. Our room was 25'x25' two double beds plus pull-out sofa for $90. Room 424. My general take-away: a great price, comfortable room, and a beautiful historic building, but the lack of soap has me alarmed. That being said, I would come here again.

Hunter T.

Yelp
The thing that makes this hotel worth while is the atmosphere and location. Everything historic is within walking distance! The only reason this isn't 5 stars is the hotel rooms themselves were slightly rundown.

Justin A.

Yelp
Exiled to Cheyenne, from the the head office in Denver, I immediately began to examine this diminutive state capitol and what sort of accomodations it had offer. I was more than pleasantly surprised to see that the Historic Plains Hotel actually offered rates comparable to some of the more budget-conscious inns in town. (a requirement for anyone on a long term business stay, such as myself) Part of the reason I love this hotel is that it is indeed historical. It's one of the first hotels to have a telephone in each room. (Actually it might be the first) The walk in cooler in the basement is literally the oldest working one of its kind in the entire country (I learned this after being given a personal tour by the owner, Astrid), and the design of the hotel itself is completely unlike any of the corporate behemoths that surround Cheyenne. I've stayed here for over 2 months now: through Frontier Days, the great American Eclipse, and a host of other summer events, the one thing that has impressed me the most is the staff. There seems to be a core group at this hotel that despite any obstacle, comes out smiling, and they take every effort to treat their guests with dignity and offer incredibly conscientious service. As a former hotelier it's quite inspiring to watch. So far as the little things: the breakfast is great, the rooms are modern, and the stairs are a pain, but in a good way. There is an antique elevator that I personally find quaint and fitting, although I'll admit some guests I've seen simply don't have the patience that their grandfather's might have had to wait for such things. There are a hundred little nooks and crannies at the Plains, and I rarely get tired of exploring the place to see what new little things I can find. A Harper's Magazine from when Grover Cleveland was the president? Oh yes please. Outside of that however, The Plains is the heart and soul of Cheyenne. And you can feel it too. You know you're in the center of things when you stay here. It's a good feeling and not one you'll get anywhere else in town. Take my advice stay here.

Chun P.

Yelp
*Remind yourself: This is a 1911 Historic Hotel in Cheyenne, WY* Rooms were relatively clean, large, fridge, microwave, functional heaters, and cost about $100/night. **Remind yourself: This is a 1911 Historic Hotel in Cheyenne, WY** Friendly and accommadating front desk staff. The electricity went out in my room so they quickly gave me a new one. ***Remind yourself: This is a 1911 Historic Hotel in Cheyenne, WY*** Central location in downtown Cheyenne, lots of shopping and food within walking distance. ****Remind yourself: This is a 1911 Historic Hotel in Cheyenne, WY**** One night, I rode a tricycle through the hallways. At the end of the hall, I saw two girls in blue dresses . They said, "Come play with us Danny...forever...and ever...and ever..." (Just Kidding!)

Yelp
I've been attending a training/workshop at the Plains but haven't stayed in the hotel. Tonight I shared a disastrous dining experience with colleagues at the hotel restaurant. Where to begin? 1) Multiple hairs in my cucumbers from the salad bar. 2) A horrific and minimal assortment of over-fried and over-priced foods. It's truly some of the worst food I've eaten in years. 3) Arguably the worst pepper soup I've ever had. 4) The server had trouble dividing a meal onto three tickets--she had three attempts before we gave up and settled things amongst ourselves. 5) Gordon Ramsey would take a flamethrower to this place. Avoid if at all possible. That is all.

This charming historic hotel is still on the road to recovery. I have to saw my experience was beyond disappointing. My room was freezing cold and far from clean and the service in the restaurant was nonexistent. I was neglected to the point where I had to walk out. As a geologist I am well traveled and am used to a wide range of accommodations from tents and dumpy motels to high quality business class hotels. So I am not overly picky. The rate was appropriate ($88) for the small room but it was so cold I had to sleep in long underwear and a wool anorak. Housekeeping had left only a bath towel. So it was good that I was traveling alone. Parking is a problem. It's on the street. Good luck finding a spot and hopefully no one breaks into your car. This is a HISTORIC hotel. So be sure to buy a copy of the little book they sell at the front desk. It's $10 and worth every penny of it. The history of this place is fantastic. You do not stay here for its creature comfort's. You stay to help save this piece of Western history. Note that the Native American Chief Little Shield which is prominently displayed everywhere, is not the owner. He never had any ownership. He was nearly a friend of the original owner. There a tractive 50 something-year-old woman who is working the front desk we need to the portrait and told me that hotel have been built and owned by native American. She was very pretty. She was very charming. And she was very misinformed.

Yelp
We love love this hotel! We stay here during Cheyenne Frontier Days and it's the best spot to be, downtown. The staff are all very accommodating and super friendly. The hotel is also very clean. We will continue to stay here!

Yelp
This is a fun place to stay, and Low rates. Drinking a glass of wine in the Lobby is great. There are some negatives. First, parking is far away, unless you park close on the street. Remember, you must move the car before 10 the next day, or a ticket. Also, small elevator, so you can't get your horse in it!!!Wow. Breakfast isn't super, and the rooms, remember 1911..that's the year Reagan was born, are not good. But, with all these negatives, I continue to stay here...last stay March 5, 2020. The bar is very nice, and the people, very friendly. Oh, and the rooms are very clean. Friendliness and Cleanliness. That's all you need in Hospitality.

Yelp
Just way overpriced for what it is. Room was very small and not historic at all just old and dated, air conditioner was a cheap window unit that was very loud. The window seal was spray foam everywhere. The chair was old and looked dirty, as was the carpet. Uncovered parking in a dirty lot 2 blocks away next to a fast food place. The lobby was actually historic but also needed work. Bottom line is that we've stayed in historic hotels with larger rooms with cleaner, better amenities for 1/3 of the price. This hotel is not even close to being worth what they charge per night.

Yelp
My star ratings for hotels are based on my overall experience during the stay. My written rating however is based solely on two factors which I believe speak to how the hotel is thinking about modern customer comfort. The first factor is easy obvious availability of electrical outlets near the bed. On this factor, the Plains fails. I found one free outlet behind the bedside table. The second factor is free bottled water. Again on this factor, the Plains fails.

Yelp
My dad and I stayed here one night during a cross-country drive. It was one of my favorite places to stay, as the site exudes history and charm. I would give them 3 1/2 stars if I could. Of course, with old buildings come old plumbing and fixtures. If sleeping in small rooms, squeezing into a slow elevator, waiting for hot water or showering with low pressure annoys you, then this place is probably not for you. But if you love learning about local history and love experiencing a bit of old-time ambience, then I highly recommend this hotel. Though our rooms were small, they were comfortable and had everything we needed. FOOD: Breakfast buffet was pretty good, better than most. I didn't have lunch or dinner there, but the dining room is beautiful and I'd definitely consider it if staying there again. SERVICE: I'd say this was the only down-side, which is what keeps me from giving them 4 stars. The front desk was a bit cool, while the dining staff stood around talking to each other rather than greeting or helping us (I ended up finding the condiments myself). More problematically, I had booked two rooms on my card, but they insisted on seeing my father's credit card for some reason at check-in. It was awkward (I had offered to pay for his room in exchange for helping me drive cross-country) and even if that's policy, the front desk staff were rather rude about it. CLEANLINESS: I found my room very clean, the bed comfortable, and the bathroom adequately stocked with nice toiletries. My dad loved his room. LOCATION: Nice, convenient downtown site. Breweries within walking distance, which my dad definitely enjoyed. I went to be early and found the room quiet enough to sleep even without ear plugs. PARKING: We had a pick-up truck with a U-Hail trailer and easily found free, overnight, street parking a block away. Had to leave by 9 am, but that wasn't a problem, as we were planning on hitting the road again long before then.

Yelp
The staff are exceptional. Our truck is in the shop a place to sleep was needed. Free shuttle we were checked in quickly and the staff was very helpful in answering our questions. The beds are comfortable and considering this is a historic hotel at 107 years old it is in great shape! I do wish the decor was more of the Era the hotel was built this is the reason it 4 stars. Our housekeeper Brandi went out of her way I asked if they had hot chocolate. She said she would inquire about it. Thinking she has forgot, we left for a walking tour of the neighborhood (I strongly recommend that you walk and take cash with you) when we came back to our room there it was. A welcoming site. The history is fantastic! I love the history love the historic buildings are fabulous!

Yelp
The best. Historic hotel with the real feel of walking into a old western movie. Loved the people, hot breakfast and the elevators. (No horses on the elevators) does it need a little update? Sure in places but when you see the historic decor it makes for a real stay in Cheyenne. Recommended if you like historic!

Yelp
Bad, bad, bad. Dirty, grey linens, makeup left on towels, smelled of cigarettes/musty, windows bad - not weather sealed (must be original to when building was constructed), loud drunk people in hall, lobby horribly dusty. There are no conference rooms in any kind of shape that can be reserved, no restaurant, no kitchen, no bar. In fact, these areas look like they've been abandoned. Some places look like construction was started, but never finished (mezzanine ceiling). You can't check their website cuz they don't have one.

Yelp
This is a historic hotel built in 1911 and remodeled about 20 years ago. If you are looking for timeless, interesting, and a hotel with a historic feel, this is your spot. The lobby is really interesting and has an attached restaurant and bar called the Capital Grill. There is a rustic elevator you ride to your room, which is fun. The room I had was large with a sitting area and wet bar. The bathroom was what you would expect for an older, historic hotel. Everything was fine. The staff were friendly and they had wifi throughout the hotel. The hotel is right on the historic plaza of downtown Cheyenne with plenty of free overnight parking. I had a nice stay...interesting historic hotel!

Yelp
We loved this hotel for the no frills and historic vibe. The lobby area is amazing with a teepee chandelier, original tiled floors, painted mural, custom furnishings and historic memorabilia. The room was plain, clean and comfortable. Don't miss the tile mosaic at the entry sidewalk.

Yelp
I decided that try this hotel for a fun and historic treat downtown. So disappointing. First, parking is two blocks away. The trash in our room hadn't been taken out. Our fridge had a large pool of water in it. The shower head was so low as to be laughable. Then, we had the treat of loud music blasting from below our room until midnight, because you know, who sleeps at a hotel. The only reason this isn't 1 star is breakfast was great. The history and atmosphere were fascinating, and make no mistake, this review isn't about misunderstanding the atmosphere at a historic place. Its about a poorly run hotel overcharging for a room and then overvaluing bar business at the expense of its primary purpose. Avoid this place until major changes happen.

Yelp
My husband and I went to the Plains this past weekend. They did not have our reservation, even though we called and booked it directly with the staff a few days before. This should have been a big flag and a warning sign to run but we didn't. The front desk person said they were booked but was able to get us a king-size Suite! Boy we thought we scored. Wrong oh Marylou. We walked into our room and were immediately disappointed. The carpet was all torn and the furniture was very dated, not like is shown on their web site or trip advisor. I went into the tiny bathroom and the towel rack was hanging off the wall. I went to touch it and it completely fell off, dry wall falling everywhere. We went and told the front desk clerk who said he would let maintenance know about it. Nothing got fixed or cleaned up, so we scooted the dry wall debris into the corner with a pile of hair not belonging to either of us. We saw signs of neglect around the property. There was one cupboard in the stairwell where the doors were hanging off their hinges. And there was some icky smells throughout the hotel. We saw air fresheners hidden on every fire extinguisher fire extinguisher box. There was mold in the shower and when I went to close the shower curtain there were two dried out washcloths from somebody who used that room before. It was gross. But the worst was that this "quiet hotel" had a band in the bar that night, and we had a room directly above the band. The front desk clerk didn't warn us about this. The band belted out loud, unrecognizable rock from 8 p.m. until midnight! Yes that's right rock and roll destroyed until midnight. We knew the hotel was booked so there wasn't any sense in trying to change rooms, and because the band was so loud there wasn't any place in the hotel that couldn't hear this band. The breakfast in the morning was good, thankfully. The coffee was hot and the bacon was crisp. The restaurant staff was friendly. We have stayed in a lot of historic hotels and after our experience and reading the reviews of other's disappointments, it is clear that they are letting this hotel fall away. It's so sad because there's so much history. Somebody who cares needs to own the hotel and put some TLC and money into it.
