I had my first-ever climbing experience at The Hive North Shore, and it was fantastic! The staff were super friendly and welcoming, making sure I felt comfortable right away. The facility is spacious, clean, and well-designed, with a great variety of routes for all skill levels. As a beginner, I really appreciated the supportive atmosphere and the well-thought-out bouldering problems that were both fun and challenging. The community vibe is awesome—everyone is encouraging and helpful. I’ll definitely be coming back for more!

I recently decided to get into bouldering as a way to make it through the dreadful fall/winter and also to pick up some new skills that I'm lacking in for my scrambling and mountaineering goals. I came to the women's intro class and then signed up for the 4-week basics class right after. I strongly recommend the one-off beginners class. I also really appreciate the women's only option for this class, as a lot of us perceive this sport as intimidating sport to get into. Erica is a wonderful instructor - patient, encouraging and very clear in her demos, explanations and feedback. So far I'm also enjoying the basics class. David is a fun and skilled instructor. Our class has a range of proficiency- me, the complete beginner, up to one person who has been coming to the gym for awhile- and he does a great job of tailoring his instruction to each of us individually to ensure we're getting what we need at the level we're each at. He also had a very detailed and thoughtful response to my concerns about avoiding injury as an older athlete new to the sport. The sheer number of people climbing in the evenings can be a little intimidating for newcomers. It's unavoidable - it gets dark at 4:30pm now, of course everyone wants to work out indoors! You kind of just have to get over it and go for it. Staff and other gym goers have been super friendly though. I've walked up to people randomly to ask newbie questions and everyone has been helpful. Looking forward to continuing my bouldering journey and coming out out on the other side of this winter ready to take it to the next level on my mountain adventures!

I scheduled my child's 9th birthday party at the Hive. We had an unexpected change in numbers and when I asked a week prior if I could pay to add kids or staff to the event, they replied no. There was no other suggestion or remediation, just a message to say they look forward to seeing us. They couldn't budge because of admin and safety issues. I cancelled the event and rebooked at Laserdome. My impression is that the birthday party concept at The Hive is an afterthought, and that they don't really seem too interested in hosting a party or kids. Maybe a climb on their terms, but absolutely nothing more. The vibe inside is vanilla. The communication is packaged, checking-boxes but lacking any real intent to serve the customer. (They opted to keep $190 of my deposit.) I live nearby and want to like this place, but I don't think we jive. I've got about 8 more birthdays to go and will spend my $450+ per party in more customer oriented businesses.

For us, climbing is a family activity. We travelled out of our way on vacation to this gym. I really respect the gym's desire to keep kids controlled and everyone safe. Having one parent supervise the kids is a very fair rule. We had 2 adults and 1 child, with the intention of having parents switch off supervising the kid. We were told that it wouldn't be allowed and that one parent couldn't climb at all. Besides the absurdity of the logistics of this (with a day pass, couldn't we just leave and come back with different parents coming "with the kid"), it is extremely unwelcoming to families. I understand you can take a course to get around this rule, but visitors looking to day pass into a gym should be aware of this is how this policy is enforced.

This was a great experience but it was BUSY the night we came in. Still had a blast climbing everything (and watching my friends be 100% better at it than i am 😆). The Kingsway location is a little quieter and more laid back but this facility is bigger by comparison

Used to love this gym and go once a week, but competition by newer gyms seems to have impacted quality. Walls are noticeably emptier than a year ago. Every hold is greasy and textureless. Samey climbs with too many dynamic moves that emphasize strength and reach over technique. Even the slab wall lacks balancey slow climbs. I gave up after 30 minutes of climbing and decided to save my strength to climb somewhere else the next day. I wont be returning until I hear that its changed up its routesetting philosophy, and I still have months left on an annual membership.

Solid bouldering gym. I live in Van but drive out to this location as it's a much better facility than the Van location. Good weight lifting equipment, system boards, traverse wall. Lots of training opportunities.

Nice boutique bouldering gym for beginners. There were not too many climbing walls and most sets from 1-4 hex (out of 6) could be on-sighted or flashed. Ventilation was somewhat poor as there was a cloud of chalk in the air. I also felt very stuffy and hot due to the lack of AC which cut my session shorter. Staff were friendly and chill. Worth dropping by if you are in the area but not worth going out of the way for.

Yelp
I went to the Hive North Shore for a Yelp event to try Bouldering and it was tons of fun! The manager gave us a quick training session and a tour of the facility. Everyone was super friendly and helpful. I would recommend the Hive for a great physical workout, it's also a great way to socialize and make new friends!

Yelp
A great facility where you can go for yoga and rock climbing in one place! The adult day pass is $21 and this includes both the yoga classes served rock climbing. The place is very spacious with enough room for climbers without feeling over crowded. The yoga room is beautiful and very relaxing with a large floor to ceiling window where you can look out to the trees and mountains as you yoga. There are shower and lockers available. The washrooms/change room are much like recreational center washroom/change rooms without the extra like hair dryer and all but it is much cleaner. Overall a really best place try out!

Yelp
I absolutely could not recommend this place enough! I was new to bc and started coming here by accident and it was the best mistake! The staff are super super friendly (thanks Will and Kyle in particular), the place is super clean and tidy, there's yoga (and acro!! Jeff and Alicia are dope!), a gym and so much space to play! They rotate the walls super often and there's always a good variety of different problems for everyone. There's a super nice and open lounge area upstairs so you can work before you climb as well. Love the hive. Thanks Y'all!

Yelp
My first time bouldering and The Hive North Shore made it an amazing experience! The manager gave us a crash course, what to do, what not to do, and as simply as it sounds, how to fall properly!! What I really liked was that they made it so that everyone could enjoy the sport. With a very easy to understand grading system, there's a route for everyone. And it's definitely not a easy as it looks!!! Great atmosphere, friendly and knowledgeable staff, I definitely recommend checking them out!!
