Grand Teton National Park Guide, From Experts

"As the founder of The Hole Hiking Experience, Cathy Shill emphasizes preparation and stewardship: I follow her advice to ‘start gently’ at elevation, ‘climb high, sleep low,’ drink lots of water, eat well, and save strenuous hikes for later in the trip; she also stresses checking weather, packing extra layers, and being a respectful visitor to the landscape." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. We booked the sunrise wildlife discovery tour, and had a wonderful experience with Rose! She took the time to figure out what we were hoping to see, and did her best to find it. She was personable and knowledgeable, and provided the opportunity to get some great landscape photos as well (she knew all the good spots!). Highly recommend!

Four friends went to enjoy some snowshoeing with Tessa and had a blast!! She was amazing! She taught us about the snowshoes and how to work them easily. We took a great hike in a beautiful area and Tessa knew a ton! She taught us about the different trees and what animals eat them, live in them, etc. It was a great experience.

Being an area with plentiful outdoors there are a good choice of guides to pick from and after alot of research we picked The Hole Hiking Experience. From the beginning of the booking to the end of the tour the communication was fantastic with confirmations on times and locations to what equipment we needed and what they supplied. The snow shoes were in great condition and sized correctly and fanny packs, water and snacks were all offered. Belinda was our guide and was a long time local so knew alot of information and was very passionate about the outdoors, wildlife and never failed to answer our questions. This is a guided educational tour and so was not just about snowshoeing the entire time. We stopped and investigated animal tracks and signs, viewed and discussed the local flora, fauna, geology and history before reaching our half way point and an amazing view of the Teton's. Belinda allowed plenty of time to take photo's along the route with no need to rush. Overall this was an amazing excursion which we will remember for a long time.

Belinda did a private snowshoe tour with us and it was so much fun. She explained so much to us about the environment as we tracked through the snow. We will definitely be doing this again!

3 of us had a great experience snow shoeing with Chelsea as our guide! The scenery was beautiful. Chelsea’s knowledge of the trees, the Tetons and just about everything we asked about was amazing! The hike was just over 3 miles total for the half day. We stopped along the way to learn and cool down. Be sure to wear layers so you can peel off as needed with physical exertion. Our hike was the Explorer and it was easily managed even with one gentleman in his 50’s with a finicky knee and a 22 yr old with a hip that can be problematic. The guide paces according to who is on the hike and what their preferences are. The temp was around 4 -18 degrees with no wind and sunny skies. 2 light layers and a medium weight jacket would’ve been enough. The snow was packed down so it was easier to hike it than it would’ve been had there been a bunch of fresh snow. Chelsea had water bottles and a wonderful chocolate chip cookie for each of us! Nice option to explore the terrain and get some exercise also!

Six of us had the best time with our guide Belinda. She was very patient with some of us that were new to hiking wearing snowshoes. Yes we would do it again and hope we get Belinda. Thanks for a great day!!

Amazing 👏 made last minute reservations, they got us in that same day. Our guide Tessa was extremely knowledgeable, she took us on some great snowshoeing trails! The views were breathtaking 😍. Differently a highlight of my trip. Can't wait to go hiking with her in summer

We took a half day mixed group snow shoe tour with Beverley in Grand Teton National Park. It started right on time at 8.30 am. It was well organized with sightings of animal tracks, breathtaking view of the forest and trees. We look forward to taking similar trips in summer and fall! Also the trail mix was amazing.

Yelp
As our Sled Dog Tour was cancelled due to the thaw we looked for a last minute activity to do with the family. We found The Hoke Hiking Experience and I have them a call. Cathy answered and was very pleasant. I explained our situation and she was understanding and found us a Snowshoeing Tour in the Tetons for a half or whole day. We chose a half day guided snowshoe tour. Beverly met us at our hotel the next morning at 0800. We chatted for a bit and there were a couple of options for us to 'shoe'. My daughters hadn't seen a Moose before so we chose the River Valley Area in the Teton National Park. The drive was about 20 minutes from Jackson. Beverly had all the gear you needed. We started out on our hike and the scenery was so beautiful. We had a very 'bluebird' day. On our was back we began to see signs of Moose. Shortly after we found what we wanted to see. A cow and her calf. Being careful not to stare to long or threaten them we were able to watch and see these beautiful animals and appreciate their size. Beverly was a very knowledgeable guide and a wonderful woman. Having help raise two daughters it is great for them to interact with other strong women. We have discussed as a family of visiting in the summer months and The Hole Experience offers a overnight camping and hiking experience that we will want to do.

Yelp
Ella was great! She knew a lot about the plants and animals on the trail and it was very interesting to learn while we hiked. She had a good sense of our energy levels and everyone had a great time!

Yelp
Fantastic hiking guides! We called last minute and Janet was a miracle worker getting us connected with a hike today. She was thoughtful and courteous, called back when we got disconnected (i think i was laughing and hung up with my cheek). She arranged for Tessa to be our guide. Tessa was extremely knowledgeable about the trails, brought us to one that for our hiking skills (or lack of) and took us on a beautiful hike. We learned about local plants, trees, and climbed to the top of the trail where we could see all the mountains around us. It was exactly the hole we asked for! We traded interesting and fun tales, learned about Jackson Hole, Teton, and even bits about Yellowstone, we stayed hydrated with provided water, and had an amazing day. Thank you Tessa for exceeding our expectations!

Yelp
Who knew snow-shoeing would be this memorable? We did a half-day private snowshoe excursion in Teton National Park with Belinda as our guide. Booked it as something new to try, figuring it would be interesting, but less exciting than adrenaline sports like skiing, sledding, or snowmobiling. Turns out... everyone loved it! We lucked out with the weather, so of course, that helps a lot. Bright sunny day and about a foot of fresh powder. Saw a few other people along the way, but mostly it felt like just us and a giant swath of nature out here. It's definitely a little bit of a workout -- about in the same category as a brisk hike -- but that actually helped us stay warm given it was super cold out. Tip: Definitely bring your own snow boots. If you do not have warm and comfortable ones for 2-3 hours of walking, talk with Hole Hiking and figure something out in advance. Tip 2: Consider toe warmers. Even with insulated boots and movement... your feet will be under the snow for a few hours!

Yelp
Oh my goodness. Just wrapped up the most amazing experience with Hole Hike. Snowshoed up to just shy of 7000 ft with outstanding views of the Tetons. Benji was an incredible guide. Do not hesitate to book this company for your next adventure.

Yelp
Had a terrific morning with Beverly of The Hole Hiking Experience. She is an encyclopedia of the area. Easy to talk to and she knows where to go to find wildlife or tell you the history of the Tetons and of Jackson Hole. If you have limited time in the area we would highly recommend using The Hole Experience.

Yelp
The premier hiking guide company in Jackson Hole. We opted for a private naturalist guided tour of the Southern Tetons about 30 minutes from downtown Jackson. We we're paired with Beverly, she was excellent. Prompt pick-up at our hotel and van was spacious and comfortable. Beverly was so engaging, personable, and knowledgeable about the areas history, ecology, and conservation. As a naturalist, she exposed us to the many indigenous species of plants and animals. Saw a fox, antelope, and bison on our 2.5 hour moderate hike. Having a guide is 100% worth it as they have access to places off the beaten path. Next time in Jackson Hole I would hire The Hole Hiking Experience in a heartbeat.

Yelp
LOVED this trip! My kids said it was the highlight of their vacation. We took a 6 hour hike with our guide, Katie. She was so knowledgable about everything- plants, trees, animals, history- you name it. I was probably a little over confident in my abilities when booking this particular hike, but Katie knew when to stop to rest and was very encouraging- yet I never felt any pressure. They have trips for all levels and ages. This was an experience we wouldn't have gotten any other way. I highly recommend this!

Yelp
What a great experience. My husband and I had the best half day (8-noon, wildlife tour and snowshoe) with Katie (well versed, educated and objective naturalist and guide - she was impressive). We had rented bikes from Teton Mountain Bike the day before and saw a lot of wild life on our own so we were kind of regretting paying $130/pp for this experience but with Katie it was worth it. She's like the animal whisperer. We were learning so much from her we just let her talk (and we are a lawyer and entrepreneur - so not talking is not our strong suit!). We saw a huge herd of bighorn sheep and elk in the National Elk Refuge (same place we biked to the day before- but no sheep and the elk were behind a fence). We attempted to find a porcupine when we snowshoed but to no avail- but snowshoeing in the Grant Teton NP was still quite exhilarating in its own way... especially for beach folks. HH was very responsive. Cathy called or emailed and a couple of confirmation calls following up to the day. Great day!! Thanks Katie!

Yelp
Our group of four took the "moderate" snowshoeing tour in Grand Teton National Park on December 31, 2016 (peak season for all things outdoorsy in and around Jackson Hole). We lucked into a day with sunshine and bright blue skies, but our real fortune was having Belinda as our guide for the excursion. Belinda was extremely knowledgeable about everything from the natural history of the greater Yellowstone area (geological formations, terrain, seasonal variations, trees, animal tracks and animal behavior) to its cultural and human history. She was also a total pro when it came to assisting us with gear and technique, helping us settle into a pace that was challenging but enjoyable and ensuring we had enough blood flowing to our extremities to be comfortable in very cold temperatures (it was -8 degrees when we started our tour!). She guided us through many areas that appeared untouched (at least since the last snow), and stopped periodically to allow us to take in stunning panoramic views of the Tetons and learn more about how they came into existence. The snowshoeing excursion lasted about 3 hours, after which we all headed over to Dornan's for a nice lunch. In the afternoon, Belinda accompanied us on a sleigh ride through the National Elk Refuge, where we were able to observe these beautiful animals up close in their natural habitat. We had a magnificent time and highly recommend Belinda and the Hole Hiking Experience for visitors who are keen to engage with nature and develop a deeper appreciation for the history of this extraordinary place.

Yelp
Alan was a great tour guide today! I had never snow shoed before and I think I found a new favorite sport. I signed up for the active tour. It turned out quickly that our group wasn't so active even though they rigorously questioned me before signing up. Luckily the guide was great and let me run off and do my own thing as long as I stayed within eyesight and earshot. The ladies were kind of angry I was part of their group which they made obvious but I loved running around in snow shoes and enjoying the beautiful Tetons! We even found a coyote den!

Yelp
A hike with Hole Hiking Experience is more of a sojourn than a trip as you ascend the mountains. You gain certainly clarities and life perspectives and almost a sense of spiritual attainment. We have gone on many hikes with Cathy Shill and we are always changed by them in a most memorable way. Her impeccable knowledge of nature and the interlocking environment as well as her sumptuous trail mix is only a gateway to the real purpose of the interior exploration facilitated by the unmatched scenery that surrounds you at every moment.
