Where to Drink Coffee in Nashville

"This is the only coffee shop in town where you can nibble on a variety of East African sambusas (beef, vegetable, and hot chicken, to name a few) while getting a caffeine fix. The Murfreesboro Pike spot was opened in 2015 by a Somali family hoping to bring the pastries and beverages they missed to Nashville’s dining scene. Try the Somali Chai tea with a shot of espresso to wash down these savory treats." - Jackie Gutierrez-Jones

The Horn – Nashville, Tennessee - Gastro Obscura

"Notes of green cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves hit your palate first, balanced by a restrained sweetness. Made with impeccably steeped black leaf tea, The Horn’s chai is to the sugary chai mix served at many American cafes what a Milanese master barista’s espresso pull is to the free, stale drip coffee you might find in an office. And while we can’t fully condone the playful sign on the wall declaring this, “The only Chai that matters in Nashville,” it is a cut above. The Horn has offered Nashville’s thriving community of more than 3,000 Somali refugees a taste of home since 2014, when Hassan Rasul opened the café with his sons, Ahmed and Zakariya. Each morning, the Rasuls lay out an assortment of sweet and savory treats, including malawah (lacy crepes), nafaqo (crispy mashed potato patties stuffed with egg), and mandazi (fried puff pastry). The real stars here are the sambusas, the Somali cousins of samosas, which come fried to a pillowy crunch. You can’t go wrong with the expertly seasoned traditional beef or veggie fillings. That said, the Rasuls also offer a rotating selection of Deep Southern riffs, including a Nashville hot chicken–inspired number and a “Smokin’ BBQ Chicken.” Most unexpectedly delightful of all might be the “Cheesy Breakfast” option, which tucks an egg-and-cheese into a flaky triangular pocket. Know Before You Go Pick up a bag of the Horn’s specialty chai blend to take home." - rachelrummel, Diana Hubbell, breaingram

I absolutely loved The Horn Coffee! I had a dirty brown sugar oat milk chai, both hot and cold — it was incredible — and tried two of their tres leches desserts (the Dubai chocolate and the Biscoff flavors). Both were absolutely delicious. The location was super convenient, just a short walk from where I worked, and the staff couldn’t have been friendlier. Such a welcoming and cozy spot — can’t wait to go back!

We had a great time at The Horn. Their menu had so many things we wanted to try. We ended up going for mixing and matching three of the sambusas - Cheesy Breakfast, Philly Cheesesteak, and Bacon, Egg, and Cheese. All of them were so yummy! We also got a Dubai chocolate cheesecake to share. The size was perfect for two people. I thought the chocolate itself was a little too sweet, but it was my first time trying Dubai chocolate and I have to say it is so good! Even better as a layer over cheesecake. Yum! I still think about that cheesecake sometimes. We went on a weekend morning day and while they had a line nearly to the door, we got through the line and were able to order our food pretty quickly. We were also pretty easily able to get a table for us and parking was pretty easy with some spots right outside. The parking lot isn’t huge so parking could be hard depending on how busy they are at different times of day. Excited to go back sometime!

Google
Nice cafe intimate but big enough not to feel cramped in. I only stopped by to try the Dubai strawberries. They were delicious my expectations were high so for $20 a cup you already know I had my pinky finger up! 😆 7 out of 10 for me I definitely will go back to try other items on the menu The staff were nice and efficient.

Google
There is a reason they are highly rated! The Chai Tea is one of the kind! It’s so smooth and yummy! Try their butter/ sugar cookies crunchy and perfect amount of sugar! Couldn’t stop eating them :) Update: we stop by today and their food is amazing and Chai is top notch cold as it is hot!

Google
Surprisingly slow for food that is already made. Coffee was alsoa disappointment (but also, slow), tasted like warmed up cold brew concentrate (tasted a lot like Stok) but was only just luke warm and like they added too much water. Sambusas were good, like what you'd expect at a decent market food stall. Got a 6 pack, beef, chicken, and vegetable. Good flavor and a good selection of dipping sauces. It's a cute place and plenty of seating for those who want to eat in. Unfortunately, the service is so slow the place is packed with people waiting for their order.

Google
Best chai of my life. I got the Somali chai and thought it was great. My girlfriend also loved the vanilla chai. We came for the Dubai strawberries which were delicious, but we will be back for the chai !!

Google
10/10! The Dubai chocolate croissant ($10) and Dubai chocolate strawberries ($18) were the best I’ve ever had! Parking is very tight and almost impossible to get in and out of if you’re in a large vehicle.

Google
This tasty treat is only sold on certain days. We went on a Friday. The chocolate is rich and creamy. The strawberries were sweet and the pistachio straws were actually good, and I'm not a fan of pistachio. Yummy 😋 But be prepared for a loooong wait. Parking is limited and so is seating.

Deka M.

Yelp
The food is amazing here, it is an authentic Somali dishes. It's pretty much your local mom & pop shop. It's delicious the best part is the sambusa they have different flavors and specials in limited time. Check it out you will not be disappointed oh and the tea anything like you ever had.

Yelp
So I heard about this place via instagram and the rave was about the Dubai chocolate. I am a chocolate lover and knew I had to try it. I arrived and it's in a small area but there's lots of parking so do not stress about parking. I walked in and saw that they had other bakery goods and sambusas as well as a variety of coffee. I decided to order 1 Dubai chocolate and 1 beef sambusa. I took my order to go and got home and let me tell you the sambusa with the orange sauce was delicious! There were no crumbs or sauce left behind! The Dubai chocolate! When I say chefs kiss! It was so good! So much so that I went back a couple of hours later to get two more sambusas and a large Dubai chocolate with two minis to hold me over for the rest of the week! Will I be here again! Should you be there too? Absolutely! This place is too good to pass up so go now!

Yelp
This is a cute coffee shop! This is the perfect place to work and relax. It wasn't too loud and it had some perfect sunlight. The Biscotti Tre Leches was DIVINE! It wasn't too sweet. I had the brown sugar chai latte. It was a tad bit too sweet.
google avatar

Jasmine C.

Yelp
Well I only came here for the widely talked about Dubai Strawberries. They were good and rich in flavor just not worth $18 in my opinion. They do seem to get quite a bit of business from how packed it was. I waited well over 15 minutes to get strawberries. It seems like majority of the customers on this day were wanting strawberries. Prepare to wait. I did order some sambusas. I can't say that I was a big fan of the beef and chicken. They were both dry and lacked flavor. I did hear that the Philly was good, so maybe on my next visit I'll try it. The staff was very friendly and was all hands on deck. They were definitely not understaffed on this day.
google avatar

Ashley U.

Yelp
Service here was great and the staff were very friendly! The sambusa's were freshly made, and oh my the coffee was the best part, very tasty and was quickly made! One of the best places to stop for a quick bite and good coffee in the area.
google avatar

Megan G.

Yelp
I stopped by their Midtown location to try them out for the first time, and they did not disappoint! I got a Somali chai which was hands down the best chai I've ever had. I tried their beef, chicken, and philly cheesesteak sambusa. The philly cheesesteak sambusa was my favorite! I also got to try their oreo tres leches and the milk chocolate dubai bar. The oreo tres leches was amazing, and not overly sweet. I definitely recommend!
google avatar

Greg H.

Yelp
Had to try the chai latte and an iced coffee from probably the most hyped chai shop in the state, and they did not disappoint! With what appeared to be a long line, each order was fulfilled swiftly and kindly, and the quality of the drinks and pastries were all top notch.
google avatar

Christina B.

Yelp
It's called the only chai that matters in Nashville for a reason! This chai is seriously delicious. And the fresh sambusas are just the most crave worthy bite in town. Hot and flavorful filling enveloped in a crispy, slightly puffy, beautiful golden triangle. And the sauces all bring their own unique flavor, be sure to try them all. The only thing is the counter service can take a little while (never an outrageous amount of time), but it's only because they're getting the love they deserve and it's been pretty crowded inside when I've visited! But good things come to those who wait, the Horn has very good things
google avatar

Indigo P. N.

Yelp
Those are some of the most quiet and humble men I've every been around! My auntie vibe was making me want to pinch their cheeks! Lol! But the chia is smootheeeeeeeeee! I only had the mandizi puff. Bought some chocolate to make "cookies". I kind of want to put some of that chocolate in the chia!! After eating the pastry, which was very light and tasty, I'm looking forward to the others!
google avatar

Monica J.

Yelp
I appreciate it being a culturally unique spot! The service was standard and friendly. The ambiance was cute as well, although nothing too notable to name. The nafaqo was good (for reference: a fried mashed potato ball with an egg inside), but I personally enjoyed the veggie sambusa much more! There was also a great touch of the sambusa "newspaper" with the order- v entertaining. My only note is for the drinks: while great to sip on, the cappuccino was WAY too hot (basically undrinkable for about a 1/2 hour) and the chai was verrry sweet. So order accordingly! Otherwise, a good spot to check out!

Yelp
The Horn is a locally owned fast casual restaurant. Love the Sambusas! Basic but my favorite is the Veg Sambusa. Strawberry Chai drink is fantastic if you like the two flavor combinations. Reg Chai latte in the bottle is strong but I take it home and get two portions basically by splitting it with oat milk. Service is always nice. The trending Dubai chocolate here is my favorite in town. The Horn also does pop ups at Richland Farmer's Market with a limited menu on Saturdays.

Isabella L.

Yelp
We got the brown sugar chai latte and we tried the chicken, breakfast, and philly cheesesteak sambusas. The philly cheesesteak one was amazing and so was the chai!!! The service was wonderful, they were so nice. 10/10 recommend!!
google avatar

Yelp
I'm so happy I finally got here! Only con: parking is not good right here. Pretty stuffed lot and deliveries blocking entrance/exit. I had to go past and turn around. Tight squeeze. Okay let's get to the good stuff. The cheesy potatoes samosa was fantastic. I could have it every day. The seasonal strawberry cold foam chai was super tasty & refreshing. I'll be back to try their classic chai. I also had the chicken and got my friend the Philly cheese steak. Great choices! Grabbed some tiramisu for a friend and they loved it. Service was quick and easy. No frills spot. I need the food truck to come to my building!
google avatar

Kate E.

Yelp
I'm not usually a chai person but MAN they make a great chai! I ordered the iced vanilla chai and I will 100% be coming back for it. I also tried their Dubai chocolate and a chicken sambusa. Both were delicious and it is clear they make it homemade as it is so so fresh! The seating area is nice but small and the staff is knowledgable and nice. I recommend to anyone in the area.

Yelp
The Horn is a great hidden gem with the friendliest staff and tasty food and drinks. Such a chill spot as well. I love the dirty chai, which is Somali chai with espresso. Their chai is truly amazing because you really get the chai flavor. Some places have chai lattes that are a little plain since there is too much milk and the milk covers the chai flavor. However, the Horn has perfected the Chai and it was so good hot or cold. If you don't want espresso, then get the Somali chai. Their sambusa's are so tasty with the perfect texture. The meat is tucked in a triangle. I had their classic beef, chicken, and vegetable. All were amazing, good amount of meat inside, and flavor was wonderful. This was so good I got back on line to order a dozen of sambusa's home. Hint - you can air fry them the next day and it is wonderful with a slight crisp outer layer. I got their specialty ones to try - Philly cheesesteak and bbq chicken. Both were amazing, Philly cheesesteak was flavorful and savory, bbq chicken was creamy bbq with cheese. My favorite is probably still the classic beef sambusa, simple but amazing. Don't forget the sauces they have! There's 3 different ones and I like them all when I dipped my sambusa's in them.

Yelp
*3.5 stars* We stopped by here after hearing that it had the best chai in town and Dubai chocolate (which I've been dying to try forever). We got the Somali Chai and the pumpkin cold foam chai. The Somali chai had great flavor but was very watered down and sweet for our taste. The pumpkin cold foam chai tasted like pumpkin but didn't taste like chai and the foam to chai ratio was off. We also got the biscoff tres leche which tasted great but could have had more biscoff flavor. However the rest of the food was delicious. We got the beef, chicken, breakfast, and veggie sambusas. The only one we weren't fond of was the chicken which was a little bland but everything else was DELICIOUS. Highly recommend trying with the mango hot sauce.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
Come here for breakfast, brunch, or lunch and you won't regret it! I had the pumpkin cold foam chai latte and it is beyond delicious. Forget Starbucks. Come here for your chai! Their sambousa's are also phenomenal. For breakfast we get the cheesy one and the Philly cheesesteak and it's perfect. For lunch we get the chicken or veggie and it's great too. Everything here is yummy! The vibe inside is calm and peaceful. No loud cackling heard here. Everyone is also super nice. We got some pastries last time and they helped describe them to us so we knew what we were getting. Everything is delicious!
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
I love this family ran business so much! The BEST chai in Nashville. I got a large iced vanilla chai with oat milk and it was sooo yummy. I also got the 3 for $11 sambusas. The chicken sambusas are my favorite and I usually drizzle their mango & jalapeño sauce over every bite. Love it when they are fresh out of the oil!
google avatar

Taylor R.

Yelp
Their chai really is to die for. I ordered the brown sugar chai while I visited this shop and it was so good. I never was a chai person until this year and the Horn is definitely sweeping the competition here in Nashville. Make sure to check them out! I need to go back and try a sambusa!
google avatar

Clorissa C.

Yelp
I've always seen the farmers market line for The Horn a mile long so I had to check out the physical location for myself. It did not disappoint! The Somali chai was the best chai anything I've tasted. Nice and creamy with non gritty chai flavor. I like how they only do iced chai in medium or large to ensure you get enough of that wonderful drink. I enjoyed two chicken and one veggie sambusa. The veggie was by far the better of the two. They will definitely see me back there soon!
google avatar

Francesca G.

Yelp
Easily one of my favorite spots to grab a quick bite. I discovered The Horn this past year and I don't know how in the world it wasn't on my radar sooner. This family run cafe is popular with locals and on the weekends there is a steady line of patrons eager to grab a box of tasty sambusa or their authentic Somali chai. The BBQ Chicken Sambusa with onions, bell peppers, and cheese and the Philly Cheesesteak with thinly sliced steak, onions, bell peppers, and cheese along with a brown sugar chai are my go to selections. Parking is limited so my tip is to stop by early to grab a parking spot and table. The ambiance is low key chill not very noisy and the service is excellent.
google avatar

Paula R.

Yelp
Stopped by the Horn on a Friday afternoon--the parking fills up quickly and the exit/entrance are one way so be mindful of that. The inside is bare bones but the food and drinks are well worth it! Had the chicken and beef sambusas--both warm, crispy on the outside, generous filling with a slight kick at the end, we loved them both! They have sauces on the side, the mango habanero was delicious. Had the dubai croissant--no words for how amazing it is!! We decided we had to go back on Monday for seconds. The iced chai was very well balanced with great flavors and the coffee was also very good. Out of the way, but very well worth it.
google avatar

Nicolette T.

Yelp
Big fan of The Horn. They are not lying when they say it's the best chai in the city. It's sweet and simple. So delicious My go to order is always a chai and then 3 sambusas. It is family owned, and they are so friendly! The ambiance inside is lowkey with plenty of tables for smaller and larger groups. A perfect hidden gem!!

Rolf H.

Yelp
Amazing coffee, amazing food, and amazing people. I heard about this place from many of my friends and finally decided to check it out. It's a quiet place for the most part with some people working on their laptops throughout. Overall a great place for coffee and Sambusas.

Savannah B.

Yelp
Cheesy egg sambusas are one of my fav breakfast meals! Love to work on my laptop and hang here for a while.
google avatar

Brenda A.

Yelp
I love coming to this local shop for my weekly dose of chai! Their beef sambusa is my favorite thing on the menu. It's flavorful and very filling. The owners are always so nice and welcoming, and the shop is quiet enough to do work (wfh peeps, there is limited seating so get there early). Parking can be a little tricky depending on the time but it's worth trying.
google avatar

Jyothsna G.

Yelp
Run don't walk! You are missing out if you haven't been here yet! Their chai and sambusas are delicious! We tried beef and Philly steak, both tasted awesome. Wish we lived closer, this would be our go to breakfast place.
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
In one word: amazing. In five words: you must try this place! To start, my brown sugar chai was delicious. Had a little bit of the caramelized sweetness from the brown sugar but not too overpowering. It was the perfect accompaniment to the selection of sambusas we ordered, including one of each type except the cheesy breakfast. The bbq chicken was by far my favorite - so much flavorful tangy goodness on the inside with a little crunch on the outside. Yum! The beef was my next favorite, had a little onion to add some crunch too. Then the veggie was probably the next best one. Philly cheesesteak was also decent - especially the slightly spicy pepper combined with the melted cheese. And probably my least favorite was the chicken - seemed like too much potato for my taste. But I'd definitely go back for the other ones! Also, all the sauces are amazing - a bit spicy and so tasty! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Tori S.

Yelp
Kept hearing about this place through word of mouth and finally was able to come check it out. Long story short everybody needs to check it out! Very relaxed ambiance. You go in and order at the counter, and there are plenty of tables. I got a Somali chai with oat milk, and 3 sambusas to try. One chicken, a Philly cheesesteak, and a cheesy breakfast. All delicious, though my personal favorite was the Philly cheesesteak. It's just the perfect bite every time! A staple in my mind now!
google avatar

Jessica K.

Yelp
If you're looking for a unique spot, check this place out! Love the Chai and sambusa's! So lucky this place is right around the corner. Great service and great spot for a chat with a friend or to work away from the office for a bit. Quiet and cozy joint!

Kelly G.

Yelp
Was searching for anything Dubai chocolate related, and stumbled upon The Horn. It was packed, which is always a good sign. The customer service was 10/10. Asked if it was my first time, as I then quickly received a run down over the menu. I ended up getting a cortado with the brown sugar syrup and Dubai chocolate strawberries. Both so tasty! Until next time Nashville.
google avatar

Maddox L.

Yelp
Their Somali Chai is flavorful and reasonably priced. I'm happy they have alternative milk options because a lot of places don't have it (I got oat milk). They also serve a variety of delicious sambusas--which are basically triangular burritos. They have plenty of seating for my friends and I to co work in. And, the staff are friendly and speedy.
google avatar

Dilman

Yelp
The employees are very sweet! Fast service!! The strawberry chai is my fave!!! Their sambusas 10/10!!! Love the veggie sambusa more than all, but they're all great. Must try!
google avatar

Elaine W.

Yelp
"The only chai that matters in Nashville." And they live up to it! The Somali chai is outstanding. Not too sweet and with a bold blend that highlights the cloves highly recommend. They quite busy on a Sunday with a good flow people

Kim T.

Yelp
This place was amazing!! We tried a little of everything. Cheesy Breakfast Sambusa, Somali chai, nafaqo and mandazi. They were all delicious but our favorite was cheesy breakfast Sambusa and mandazi. The mandazi was like a slightly sweet flat donut. We have never tasted anything like it. Chai was amazing. We had it hot but can't wait to try it cold.
google avatar

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
Attention chai lovers: if you like a balanced, spicy chai, come to the Horn. This is not a trendy cafe, but the prices and the quality make it more than worth it. Less than $5 even for the large. The chai is a balanced black tea with cloves and cinnamon. I tried the mango fruit cup, which was refreshing, and my sister had the beef sambusa. The sambusa is buttery and flaky, with a creamy smoky sauce on the side. The meat was well seasoned, with warm spices that were not overpowering.

Jaylin J.

Yelp
Best coffee I've ever had. The service was fast. A small little coffee shop & a hidden gem. If I ever am in Nashville again I'll be back.
google avatar

Joanna B.

Yelp
I loved everything I ordered and will be back! I got the iced vanilla chai which was by far the best chai I've ever had. I also got the cheesy breakfast sambusa and chicken sambusa. Both were fabulous. Can't wait to come again.
google avatar

Andrea R.

Yelp
Everything is amazing here from the food to the service to the location. I love the ambiance here and the food just keeps getting better and better. I love that they have seasonal new items as well. I have not tried a single thing I don't LOVE from The Horn. I love it all! I highly recommend you come check them out.
google avatar

Madeline C.

Yelp
What a hidden gem! I came to try the Dubai chocolate croissant and I stayed for the Sambusas. They're delicious little fried pillows with incredible fillings. My favorites are the cheesy breakfast and the Philly cheesesteak. Make sure you grab some of the white honey mayo sauce, I wish they would sell this by the bottle! The service is great and they are always so nice. This place is my first stop when I leave the airport, and my last stop on the way back to the airport. There's seating and it's very laid back so you can enjoy there or take it to go.
google avatar

Brittan G.

Yelp
The coffee was delicious and they had a lot of unique options on their menu! We got there around 10:30 and unfortunately all the food was sold out but they sounded delicious!
google avatar

Alexis R.

Yelp
Get yourself the sambusa. I will dream of these until I can come back to Nashville. I got a latte and that was also great. So many tempting sweets that I'll have to come back for. But probably plan to find a better bathroom elsewhere, only downside.
google avatar

Caleb B.

Yelp
What a treasure this place is the coffee is amazing. The food was phenomenal. I absolutely loved the chili sauces. Five stars isn't enough. The people were so friendly I'll definitely be back next time I'm in town
google avatar

mon k.

Yelp
Service is awesome... Foods is amazing . Ambiance is quiet and friendly. Dining experience is one to positively remember! A must stop place in Nashville
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
A fresh breakfast sambusa with the mango habenero salsa is my favorite bite in Nashville. The Philly is my other favorite. I got hooked from their stall at the Richland Park farmers market and now we visit the store most weekends instead. Great space to grab breakfast and sit down in a booth.
google avatar

Steph C.

Yelp
Brown sugar chai and three sambusas will do you right every time. The bbq chicken was a little sweeter than expected - I prefer beef and cheesy breakfast - but the mango habanero sauce is just perfect. No punches are pulled on heat and then you're soothed by the sweet!
google avatar

Max E.

Yelp
Came here after I saw a video on TikTok and if I could give a 10/10 I would. The chai latte was the BEST I have ever had. The Sambusas were fantastic and having the Dubai chocolate bars is the literal cherry on top. Cannot recommend this place enough!!
google avatar

Anahit K.

Yelp
I got the philly cheesesteak sambusa, and my husband the beef sambusa. It was so good I could eat 10 of them. We couldn't resist and got the Dubai pistachio chocolate bar. It's as good as you are imagining. The gentleman that took our order was nice and over all the place had a nice vibe. I'm excited to try the rest of their stuff over time.
