We were going to an apt and looking for a place to grab a quick bite for lunch and came across this place. It was 4 adults and we were seated quickly as it was a Sunday early afternoon. Our drink & food order was taken and we didn’t have to wait long for our food (although our drinks took a little longer because of the bigger party that had come in prior to our arrival). The food was good - the BLT was toasted very well and bacon crisp; Grilled Cheese had a number of cheeses but the special (tomato soup) soup was okay. Overall it’s a beautiful place & service was attentive. Would highly recommend stopping by for a bite if you are in the area.

We met our Son from out of town for lunch. I had a gift card and we've been wanting to go there. Everyone was so friendly it felt like it wasn't our first time being there. The service was excellent and the food was so good and the portions were ample. We will definitely be dining there again.

Congratulations to Management for ruining several Mother's Days for multiple families. You sat tables with elderly and children knowing your head chef was not there. I wish I was exaggerating to say that it took 45 minutes to get drinks (no refills offered) and 1 hour 45 minutes to get food. Shame on you for putting such stress on your employees who could do nothing but apologize and hold back tears. An hour in, I asked for bread or chips and was accommodated, so thank you to the kind waitress for bringing the only thing with taste at this place- a bowl of homemade chips (again, no head chef). I'm perplexed why this wasn't brought out immediately since it was known there was such a delay in the kitchen. Was it really thought it would go unnoticed to make patrons (with children and the elderly) wait for that long? On a holiday? At the 1 hour 30 minute mark, I walked to the end of the block with my tween daughter where I picked up pastries from Carlton Bakery so we would have something other than a bowl chips to eat, since the kitchen still hadn't started our food. I highly recommend Carlton Bakery - the cardamom roll was exceptional and my daughter loved the raspberry croissant. When we returned (at the 1 hour, 45 minute mark) the rest of our table was hungry enough to eat a shoe, which was about the taste level of the food- again, no head chef). The roast beef sandwiches were dry, the salmon hash was watery, and the fries were soggy. And what was offered to us as an apology for this awful experience? Nothing: Not even salt or pepper or hot sauce or drink refills. I am embarrassed for having taken my senior mother here. We will never return and advise others to NOT choose this for a special occasion or for that matter, any occasion ever. I hope the wait staff knows their worth and find somewhere else to work immediately. I know it wasn't your fault- do better Management.

After a great ride around the area on our motorcycles, we stopped by for lunch. Great experience, service and food were both awesome. Best fries I've had in a long time. Cheers

Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon for a bite while out scouting a wine tasting opportunity. We were more than delighted five years ago ordering the Smoked Ham, Swiss, Mayo & Fig Jam on Ciabatta. Not so much this time. In fact, it wasn't on ciabatta , but more or less sliced sub sandwich bread. Very disappointing.

Google
Great sandwiches, soups, salads at a good price. 16oz French press coffee $4. Very good service. Lunch is busy, you can expect to wait 15-20 mins. I'd say the sandwiches are equal in size to a Subway 12" - just WAY better. It's easy to find in Main street. It's also easy to access and exit front and back. Additional parking in back. Rear entrance, and patio (very nice) are not fully handicapped accessible; the rest of the place is. If you found this post to be helpful please consider a thumbs-up.

Google
The Carlton sandwich is delicious!! We ordered a few things to go and ate lunch at a vineyard with a beautiful view. I highly recommend it! We got the hummus and some truffle fries to share but the sandwiches are sizable and we would've been okay without anything extra. If you like spicy cold cuts, the Italian sandwich is worth a try!

Google
Made reservation over the phone Staff on phone and in restaurant were friendly and patient with any questions Food was delicious and I was so happy chicken salad was breast meat. Bakes brie with figs was quite tasty. Pumpkin cheesecake was a great way to end lunch. Looking forward to next time!

Yelp
I always try to find a way to stop into Horse Radish when I'm out wine tasting. Their sandwiches always make the perfect pairing to the days adventures. Every sandwich I've ordered has had fresh ingredients and the perfect crisp on the bread that's required for a hot sandwich. They have super friendly staff and have such fun shopping and wine tasting right in that area!

Emily B.

Yelp
It's been a while since I had tried the horse radish so a friend and I decided to give them a try. I had the creamy tomato soup and small ceasar salad. The soup wasn't creamy but it was ok. The salad was great, loved the capers. My friend ordered the pastrami sandwich with no pickles or sauerkraut and mustard on the side, the sandwich came out with all of this. When we said something to the waitress she brushed it off and didn't bring a new sandwich out. When she brought the check she told us she took off the $3 fries for the mess up. Maybe I'm old school but if you bring something out wrong you fix it. It was very disappointing.

Yelp
Super friendly staff, good drinks, and great vibes for the ambience. Food was just okay. Worth a try if you are undecided.

Josue V.

Yelp
It was alright - I need to pay a few more visits, I guess. The staff is super friendly though. I did love the band! Live music is always appreciated

Kim L.

Yelp
A great place for fabulous food, wine & music. We came here for years for the pastrami sandwich - now only available at lunch! We more than made do with a house made carbonara and a perfectly cooked burger. Owner Julie was also our server-doesn't get any better. This is a new location - with a full kitchen and full bar. Marshall Davis wine is plentiful and the Syrah was a perfect match for our food.

MaryPat E.

Yelp
My tummy hadn't been feeling well, so I got the grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup for lunch and it was perfect!! the tomato soup was very flavorful with just the right amount of heat and the grilled cheese sandwich was nice and thick not one of those flat pancake looking grilled cheese sandwiches that you get everywhere else!! service was great. The staff were very, very friendly. We sat at the window, which was perfect for watching people walking by. Carlton is lucky to have this gem!!!

Kim M.

Yelp
Once again, The Horse Radish came across with a great meal! I was hesitant to order the Horse Radish Dip because it came on a ciabatta roll. I was afraid the roll would be tough. Absolutely not! So glad I listened to my instincts and ordered it. The roll was tender and the sandwich was superb. A cup of delicious tomato soup and a glass of local (next door!), wine made for a fabulous pre-holiday lunch. I'm pretty sure that lunch saved me at least $100 at my subsequent trip to Carlton Farms because I didn't go hungry! In girl math, I just made some serious dough!

Ashley And Sean H.

Yelp
Wonderful lunch with my father. Server was great. Burger special was awesome, standard pastrami was very good. Thank you

Rick S.

Yelp
Great vibe, great food good draft beer. Stopped by for lunch and this was a fantastic find. Pastrami sandwich with tomato soup hit the spot on a rainy day. Definitely adding to my favorite places when we pass through again. Would like to try their dinner menu sometime - it looks pretty good also.

Yelp
Hate to day it, but don't remember what I got here. One of our group had the Frittata which they said was great and another had the Burger of the Day which the described as a weird combo. Looked at the menu online now and remember I got the Italian. It was OK, but when they say pressed I think of a Cuban sandwich which is hot and crispy. This was not crispy.

Tammie D.

Yelp
Good prices way too high for what you get. It's meh there People need to just stop eating out until prices reflect what you actually get!

Angela P.

Yelp
A charming restaurant that matches the charm of the quaint town it resides in. We went there during the meltdown, and true to small town expectations, I ran into people I knew. They recommended getting the Melt Down, which is part of a fundraiser sponsored by YCAP. The featured Melt Down, was a french onion soup grilled cheese sandwich. Yikes, was it delicious! I hope they consider making it a staple on the menu as I would drive the 45 minutes just for this sandwich. To keep with the cheese, we started with a warm brie cranberry drip, which was equally delicious.

M M.

Yelp
I have been here several times over the last 5-6 yrs, and the lunch I had two days ago was terrible!! First off, it took over 45 mons to get our food. A couple that arrived AFTER us got served before we did (group of three)!! The grilled cheese was meh - a pitiful slice of Swiss? I had the pastrami. It was good, although the bread could have been more toasted and less greasy. The handful of fries (an "upgrade" from the chips the sandwich normally comes with) cost $3... waa-ah?? One friend had the "burger of the day" and said it was delicious. Bad service, mixed food results... Sadly, this was the last time I'll eat there. There's no reason to wait as long as we did for our meal. We'll be going to Park & Main from now on.

Brandy L.

Yelp
This is a must stop for my friends and I before an afternoon of wine tasting! Delicious sandwiches, my favorite is the Italian. The Brussels Sprouts & the Brie appetizer are a must. Service is always wonderful and personal. And if you have never been to one of their winemakers dinners you are seriously missing out!

Jessy M.

Yelp
Great food great service! Definitely was loud due to a bus full of people there. But the food was great, I have a Turkey and bacon and pesto sandwich and loved it and will definitely be back!

Christine V.

Yelp
I went here with my friends after a lovely wine tasting. My BBF did have to make a reservation. I got the pastrami sandwich and the others in my party got the turkey sandwich and the burger. I think the pastrami sandwich won- the pastrami was fresh and not too salty but the winner was the sauerkraut. The burger with bacon was overcooked and dry. I did taste the turkey. 3 sandwiches and an IPA total was $66.50 not including tip.

Taunie L.

Yelp
The most unorganized morning; our group had reservations at 10:30 right at opening. 20 minutes to get drinks, 1 hour 20 minutes to get food which mostly arrived cold & the portions were less to be desired considering the cost. You would think on a holiday weekend at a place you have reservations the facility would be properly staffed since you were already serving a limited menu. Unfortunately, we will never be back & another brunch joint strikes out in the Yamhill County area!

Jean A.

Yelp
We had reservations Saturday afternoon and were seated within a reasonable time of arriving. The hostess told us that someone would be there to take our order. In about ten minutes the server came and took our drink and food order. The drinks came right away and then we didn't see her again for 40 minutes. It took that long to get two grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup and baked Brie. I had had the sandwiches and soup before and was really looking forward to it. When we finally got our food after getting up and inquiring, the meal wasn't at all like I remembered. The bread was just plain white bread and the soup was just warm. The Brie was so soupy that you needed to eat it with a spoon. We asked for a box and the server never came back. We had to get up and ask for that, too. Going to try another restaurant in Carlton next time we are there.

Kimberly B.

Yelp
I've eaten here a couple of times and have enjoyed the food. It's a really nice atmosphere as well. The service was also very good. If I had one complaint it's that the tables each time were very sticky. Like a film on them and your arms stick.

Sal E.

Yelp
Outstanding fried BRUSSELS SPROUTS!!!!! Wonderful service. Consistent, delicious, fun. Will absolutely return and strongly recommend!!

Lindsay P.

Yelp
Food was perfection. Waitstaff friendly and got everyone's order exactly right despite our little changes. Nice ambiance. 5 star so far. But we waited just over an hour for our lunch. We were there in a Saturday and it was fairly full so if we go back it will be mid week.

Aparna B.

Yelp
We have been here twice in the last 3 months and both times we have been very happy with both the food and the service and the Horse Radish. On our most recent visit on Easter Sunday, we went for brunch and sat outside on their patio. I got the eggs Benedict (substituted tomato for ham) and my husband for the roast beef sandwich with fries. Both our dishes came out quickly and they were both delicious. The Hollandaise sauce was refreshingly light, their side salad is amazing (cranberries, goat cheese, so yumm), and the fries were pretty good as well. Overall, the food was top notch. Next time you are in Carlton, pay the Horse Radish a visit for a meal and you will not be disappointed!

Brendie W.

Yelp
I had this on a wine tour served for lunch and it did not disappoint. The sandwiches are delicious. The turkey sandwich was huge, fresh served with lots of yummy goodness. The tomato soup was a delight. It wasn't overwhelming, it was just right. I would go here again in traveling through. Support a small business, and give it a try. I promise you, you'll thank me!

Chris J.

Yelp
1st time, fantastic food and excellent service, second attempt they were closed for an exclusive event, third time they were closed when we arrived (dinner hour) so we disappointedly went across the street only to discover on leaving they were now open and people inside were enjoying their food! 4th time we tried and found the one item we were looking forward to trying was no longer on the menu but we ended up being driven out by the most obnoxiously loud live performance we've ever endured anywhere and I mean this was *loud* (and ps I don't know who you guys were but no amount of volume can make up for a lack of talent sorry) the noise was oppressive and literally felt like torture. We were forced out and didn't stay so yeah it's going to be a solid maybe for now from me. Looking forward to actually trying it again at some point but another miss like these may put the radish permanently off the list. My ears are still ringing.

Linda P.

Yelp
Really great lunch! We shated a Ceasar Salad and then the hamburger of the day with yruffke fries, so good!

Lydia S.

Yelp
Having seen this place for years, we were looking forward to trying it. Unfortunately, we were disappointed. The ambiance was weak - very sparse and cold feeling. Hard to hear each other (and I'm not old!) One person in our party was vegan and that was definitely a mistake. The brie appetizer was the smallest portion of cheese I have ever seen. The cookie dessert definitely needed ice cream, not whip cream. It was just not what I had hoped and expected.

Tiffany H.

Yelp
Enjoyed the live music but wouldn't return otherwise. The baked Brie was a very small serving and completely liquid (didn't appear to have the rind at all- just a small container of liquid Brie with the toppings). They had multiple cocktails on the menu made with various juices and flavorings; one was a berry lemonade cocktail so I asked if I could have one nonalcoholic and I was abruptly told "we don't make mocktails." Given I asked for something on the menu, that they clearly had available, and I'm 8.5 months pregnant, I was pretty surprised. I would've even taken a plain juice but she just stood there staring at me without offering any other suggestions. I got a soda since it was literally the only thing on the menu I could drink since they won't give a pregnant woman juice or lemonade...

Zander B.

Yelp
Food was good. Service was adequate. Communication was so poor that it ruined the meal. Came in figuring an hour would be enough to get a sandwich. I was wrong. Waited 10 min for someone to come introduce and take order. 45 min later I had to flag down the hostess to find out what was wrong. We eventually got our food, we had to eat a few bites and leave to get to our event, but it's never good to pay before your food even arrives. Yeah service wasn't great and it was pretty busy but the fact no one EVER apologized for the wait and explained why a Sandwich took an hour until it was too late is why I likely won't eat here again. Food was good but the experience was ruined. So much for a birthday lunch. Side note maybe if you're short staffed or really swamped you give customers a heads up. Instead all the tables had to ask what was happening.

Emily C.

Yelp
Wonderful lunch after a morning spent bopping around wine country! And as someone who wasn't drinking, I was particularly looking forward to my next meal. We were seated immediately by a friendly hostess and given menus to look over. Their lunch lineup is basically the picnic fare of my dreams. Hearty sandwiches, salads, chips & dips, charcuterie plates, hummus - all looked fabulous. My husband, friend and I shared the oh-so-decadent baked brie accompanied by fig jam, hazelnuts, and cranberries. Next up, I opted for an Italian combo with a side salad and both were absolutely excellent. The sandwich came with heaps of sopressata, genoa ham, hot coppa, provolone, spicy peppers and Italian dressing. And whereas some places might throw a measly handful of lettuce on the plate as an afterthought, this salad came was a delightful blend of mixed greens, goat cheese, dried cranberries & hazelnuts tossed in a fig balsamic vinaigrette. Total win all around.

Robin Z.

Yelp
Had the most incredible Sunday brunch meal. Pineapple mimosa. Pork Schnitzel Sandwich with bacon jam and Blue berry french toast. Super friendly staff. Beautiful restaurant.

Steve H.

Yelp
A Birthday Bruch 6 people (counting the sock sniffer) Baked Brie & Brussel Sprouts fir apps All the the sandwiches (including special) for entree Really great vibes Connected to Marshall Davis wines next door. They really should do more with the connection

Kathleen H.

Yelp
The food was fine but NONE of the staff had a mask on despite a sign on the door stating that Oregon required masks inside. This was the only place we entered in our 3 day visit that flaunted masking rules, especially concerning and disrespectful at a time when a surge in cases is happening. Not sure if this is a political stance or mere selfishnes, but beware. We won't go back.

Farm Girl G.

Yelp
One of our favorite restaurant's in Carlton! We look forward to a great soup, sandwich or salad at lunch and a creative extensive menu at dinner! We dine here several times each visit and have for the last six years! We have never been disappointed! Great thanks for your special personal service!

Eric C.

Yelp
We came through Willamette Valley like everyone else to visit some vineyards in town. We had a gap for lunch so we opted to look around and see what the local town had to offer. Several online sites had recommended The Horse Radish which was accompanied by glowing reviews from locals and visitors alike. It's a sad thing to say but we have only sat in one other restaurant since January until this moment. While there are many steps to take before the restaurant industry came come back online, I am hopeful that continued support like a brief lunch or takeaway will help these businesses stay afloat for the mean time. The Horse Radish offers a sandwich menu for lunch. While there are other items offered as well, people clearly come here for their gourmet 'wiches. First off I have to say I felt say eating here. They have a large indoor ventilated space where each table was more than 6 feet across. All patrons even when sitting at the table were wearing masks unless they were eating. All servers were also wearing masks and they minimized the number of times they came by the table without compromising customer service. I went with the burger special today with grill pork belly on top. It was smothered with a smokey sweet and savory barbecue sauce that really just topped off the dish. The acid cut right through the sweetness and the fattiness of the dish and while I initially wasn't terribly hungry, I went ahead and polished off the dish without looking back. Many customers come through and do takeaway orders. There were at least 8 tables available indoors where people came in to grab a bite. If you're looking for a local place to fit in between visits or you just want a good, safe bite to eat then The Horse Radish will provide that for you!

Luc M.

Yelp
Everything about this place is amazing. The service, the cleanliness, and the food itself is out of this world. I've been here twice and both times my party was seated quickly. The staff is super helpful when it comes to their food and drinks. I've had the Carlton and the Ham sandwich and both are amazing. All of their sauces are tasty and add tremendous amounts of depth to the meal. You have to try this place out when you're anywhere close! Great for post wine tasting.

Andy D.

Yelp
If I mentioned slow service anywhere else it would be a bad thing. Here the correct term would be personalized service. Yeah it's slow, but this place is so charming, you want it slow. To look at the beautiful cheeses on the rack and the wine is a great appeal. You fall in love, you wanna eat everything. The pastrami sandwich is to die for, as everything is from the area and is fresh. The wines locally made along with the Beer. The staff is super friendly, so I suggest sit back enjoy the day, as you won't regret it.

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
Needed some food in the belly for the wine tasting to carry on, this place delivered. I had the 1/2 ham sandwich, sounds basic right? Well it's not! Real meaty delicious ham with melted cheese AND fig jam on ciabatta with 1/2 salad and a generous pour of rosé ;) He had the 1/2 Carlton sandwich, they were out of turkey so they substituted with avocado there was a little disappointment but no complaints and 1/2 tomato soup. Delish

Aimee D.

Yelp
We had a much needed at The Horse Radish here after a pinot noir-filled morning (hey, don't judge, when you're in wine country you can drink whenever you want!) It was actually recommended as a great lunch spot from the winery we were coming from. Overall, we had a good experience! Service was great and there was plenty of seating, and we decided to order some soup/sandwich combos. The soup of the day was potato leek, and it was just okay. It was really sweet and unfortunately didn't have a ton of flavor. However, the turkey sandwich and the special sandwich of the day were really good. They have a lot of wine here, but we were not ready for more - maybe next time! This is a great, reliable spot when you need a break from the wineries.

James P.

Yelp
Great ambiance. The food was nicely plated, fresh, and flavorful. However, service is painfully S L O W. Almost comical, actually. We had to cancel a wine tasting because our to-go order took 35 minutes to come out. Dessert was another 20-minute wait. Will not return unless I order the day before.

Tami F.

Yelp
Took soooo long to get our lunch Others were served before us Manager never apologized Took an hour and 20 to get our food Food was excellent Waitress was sympathetic but manager was cold and could care less about time management on our order. Daily Soup excellent

Gretchen D.

Yelp
Great food in Carlton. Seems to be where the locals and winemakers go. The prices are good, service is good, and servers are friendly.

Jenifer E.

Yelp
Super lunch and great service!!!! Hope to come back on another way through!!! Thank you!!

Angi B.

Yelp
Loved our upscale food in a relaxed setting. Baked brie with cranberries & hazelnuts, Coq au vin, sea scallops & maple whiskey sour were all outstanding! Can't wait to go back.

Anica S.

Yelp
THE best brunch I've had in a long time, I've been burned a lot lately trying places in Salem so I was happy to not be disappointed for once! The most delicious breakfast potatoes and eggs Benedict of my life, everything made from scratch and locally sourced when possible too which I love. Also their bacon was the bomb! Can't wait to come back for dinner

Stacey D.

Yelp
Went here for Sunday brunch with two friends visiting from out-of-town. I made a reservation in advance, but it didn't seem to be necessary, as there was only one other table of patrons when we arrived at 10:45 am. They must have just opened because everything seemed a bit slow and haphazard. Getting a BLoody Mary took awhile, and when it did arrive, it was (according to my friend) "not great" and "not enough seasoning". However, that is where the issues ended. Our server was very accommodating and friendly, and the food arrived fairly quickly. Both friends ordered the Farmer's Breakfast, which seemed pretty simple and straight-forward, but they raved about it. There were many things on the menu that appealed to me, but I finally settled on the burrata special with local tomatoes, prosciutto and chimichurri; and I was not disappointed, as it was delicious. Afterwards, we walked across the street to Ken Wright for a wine tasting, and when we returned to our car, there was a line of people waiting to get into The Horse Radish. I will definitely return to this restaurant to try some of the other interesting dishes on the menu.

Martha R.

Yelp
I just adore this place... they are a cheese and wine bar in the heart of downtown Carlton (okay, Carlton is only a one-block downtown so everything is in the heart). They have a great selection of wines, and a nice little cheese menu with some artisan meats, and some other little goodies to satisfy the tummy while drinking all the great wines. This past weekend, they had Doug and Joy from Anthony Dell wines pouring some of their wines... and they were wonderful - both personality-wise, and wine-wise. The staff there is very knowledgeable, and friendly, and there are a lot of other wine-folks lurking about that you can strike up conversations with. The atmosphere is just fantastic, and the location is great for a little wine-drinking break from all the wine-tasting that you have to do... sometimes it's nice to take a little break from the running around, and be able to drink a full glass, and relax for a few, and this is the place to do it. I just wish that this place was a two-block walk from my house... wait, no I don't - I'd be there all the time spending money that I don't have!

Lori D.

Yelp
Cute sandwich spot & tasting room. We stopped in just as they took the last seating. They happily accommodated us. Everyone was extremely friendly.

Christy A.

Yelp
Great spot when wine tasting and needing a hearty sandwich to fill your belly and get back to tasting. The Carlton is delicious and very filling. Service is attentive and friendly.
