10 Literary Cafés, Pubs, and Restaurants to Feed Your Muse

"The Colonial-era building in Baltimore’s Fell’s Point Historic District is rumored to have been one of Edgar Allan Poe’s favorite drinking spots, and claims to be the place where he took his last drink before he was found wandering the streets, was taken to the Washington Medical College, and died four days later. There’s even a seat marked “Poe’s Last Stop.” It’s been called The Horse You Came In On Saloon (locals just say “the Horse”) since the 1970s. The inside has been modernized, but the building’s exterior remains original. The building has been a continuously operating bar since 1775, making it the oldest in Baltimore—and the only bar in Maryland that continued operating during Prohibition. The bar sits on the last street before the docks on the Patapsco River, and it’s a short walk from where Poe first met and fell in love with Virginia Clemm, who died from tuberculosis in 1847. (He’d since moved across town to Amity Street where Poe House and Museum sit today). There is some controversy around the bar’s claim to fame as Poe’s last stop. According to the Baltimore Post-Examiner, it’s “not possible that ‘The Horse’ was Poe’s ‘final’ destination before he died.” However, he was found just a few blocks away, and it’s definitely possible he drank there at some point that day. Now it’s a beloved dive bar that hosts live music most nights, but sometimes before locking up, the staff leaves a glass of whiskey out for the ghost of Edgar Allan Poe." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Even though I've lived here 10 yrs, I didn't visit this place until yesterday, but as my buddy is visiting from out of state, we came for an afternoon cocktail- old fashioned. The bartender was great, even when a group of like 12 ppl walked in, he kept everyone taken care of. The ambiance and esthetic (saddle seats, even) give this place such a cool vibe, and the history alone is worth a visit.

We arrived at the bar just as it opened for the day. We were the first ones inside since we waited about 20 minutes for them to open. We planned on going inside and getting a pre-lunch snack due to the historical nature of the building, but we decided to get lunch. The food was excellent, and the bar started to pick up as we finished. The bartender could not be nicer to us, and we really enjoyed the experience. We cannot comment on how it is later in the day or at night since we were not there at that time.

What a cool place! If you are into drinking while sitting in a little bit of history, then this is the place!! Come walk the cobbles and spend some time in the very saloon Edgar Allen Poe did!

A great bar and great bartender! Has a great history of being the last spot Edgar Allen Poe was seen before dying. The seats were cool seeing they were in the shape of saddles!

Welcome to the B.

Awesome bar with a lot of history. Plenty of drink options with great bartenders. You can sit at the bar or find plenty of seating around the bar. They have live music which was great. The decor is cool with some pretty funny stuff. Real cool place to meet up with friends and get a drink while taking in some history.

They say this bar sold Edgar Allen Poe his last drink. Luckily they didn’t sell me mine. The bar seats are saddles and I can’t tell you how much joy that brought me🤠Great vibes and everyone was super friendly 🙏 even the tipsy Ravens & Lions fans🐦‍⬛🦁

What a great find for us! There are a lot of bars and saloons in this area, but THIS one is the oldest continuously running one in the United States. This also the last place Edgar Allen Poe was seen alive! So we went in! It's a lot bigger on the inside than it looks on the outside! There is front bar where a band can be set up, a motorcycle hanging from the roof and that is just the beginning. There is another much bigger bar further back and another 2 bars that are both big to the back and left. All have big screens for sports. This place can hold alot of people. They had 2 of the bars cordoned off as it was a week day inn the middle of the day but you could see each had its own character. Really cool bar and great service.

Google
The oldest bar in Baltimore and considered the last place where Edgar Allen Poe had a drink. Cool vibe, est. in 1775 so just to think about that is a bit mind boggling. Make a stop for a quick drink before you get back on the water taxi
