We stayed one night here and it was lovely. The staff are very nice, the rooms are clean and a nice mix of old and modern, and it's very quiet. It's a few streets off the busier part of town so we didn't hear any noise at all and it was easy to walk everywhere we went. We really enjoyed our stay!

Google
We love it here! I love me a good boutique hotel, and Lark properties are among my favorite in New England. I'd stayed here about 10 years ago and again about 5 years ago and they've gone through a significant redesign in the last 18 months. I am a true homebody and love my own bed and my own creature comforts, but wow, this king bed and its bedding were *luxurious*—I didn't want to get out of bed! The staff is so, so welcoming and kind, and you leave your weekend feeling like they're your family. The common areas are so welcoming, and we loved hanging out with others at the small bar downstairs during the evening. They were super accommodating and allowed for late checkout, and we were able to keep our car parked in the back lot while we played in Portsmouth after checkout. I can't wait for our next visit! Highly recommend if you're staying in Portsmouth.

Easy place to stay in walking distance of everything downtown. The room and hotel were nice, not as nice as the Lark hotel we stayed in Burlington, VT. Staff were nice. The air conditioner was lit up at night and we had to cover the light with some pillows. Breakfast had hardly anything left and was busy when we arrived around 8:45 am ish. I think they there were going to replenish it.

Google
Fun place to stay. Quaint bar with pool table, reading rooms and adorable breakfast area. Walking distance to anywhere you want to go in Portsmouth. The staff of the hotel is incredible, following in the footsteps of their amazing general manager. This is where we will stay the next time we are back in town.

We stayed in their “King Deluxe” room which was an upgrade and additional cost to their other rooms. ||The Good: Parking is convenient. The hotel’s location is excellent. There was more bad than good at this location….||The Bad: The value for the money. This place is not worth $500 a night. The room was musty, including the portable air conditioning device on the floor that was conveniently omitted from ANY of the photos on their website. We would not have stayed here had we known we had to sleep next to a portable air conditioning device. The breakfast was confusing and not very good. The layout was terrible and cluttered with decorations, but not much of a spread of food. Breakfast is basically Cheerios, toast or some weird cucumber salad. There were NO pastries. No protein like eggs, bacon, sausage. You would get a better breakfast at a Residence Inn. We were gravely disappointed with the “breakfast” portion of the Bed and Breakfast. The road noise was somewhat bothersome, as was the person walking above us all ngiht and early in the morning. ||Another huge complaint of ours was the shower. It was the size of the shower you would use on a cruise ship. The water came out of a tiny shower wand with poor water pressure (just like a cruise ship). Again, these photos were omitted from the website. There was a tiny sink area outside the bathroom and next to the bed. Turning on the lights at night or early in the morning is problematic for anyone still sleeping. I brushed teeth and got ready after showering by using my cell phone light because the sink light would have woken up my spouse. Again, ,this wasnt the $500-a-ngiht experience we were looking for.||The room had a small tv that was placed awkwardly on the side wall. The view of the tv was obstructed by the four-pillar bed posts which were completely unnecessary and made watching the tv impossible. I simply dont understand the lack of attention to detail at this property. ||This was the second Lark Hotel property we stayed at this week (the other was in Burlington, VT) and the Portsmouth, NH location was disappointing for how expensive this place was. The photos on the Hotel Portsmouth website were incredibly generous to what you actually see once you stay here. We also simply didnt see any good value here and we would not stay here again.

Beautiful and unique decor in a historic building. Staff was friendly and thoughtful. We had a great tour of the main areas while learning about the history of the building. Our room was immaculate and beautifully decorated with a patriotic design. Don’t miss the “speakeasy” on the ground floor!

I thoroughly enjoyed my night in Portmouth, NH thanks to a great night's sleep and great recommendations for dining. The staff were very friendly and accommodating to my needs. The staff immediately checked and changed my room when we found the AC wasn't working. It's a great location for walking to a variety of restaurants.

A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Portsmouth We had such a great stay at the Portsmouth Hotel! The location is perfect; it's very walkable to shops, restaurants, and everything downtown has to offer. The staff was incredibly friendly and made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. Our room was not only comfortable but also had such unique decor; it gave it a personalized feel. We would definitely stay here again!

Yelp
OK - you can stay at the new "Boutique" hotel by Marriott.. But if you want quaint, small, and well staffed. A Victorian that is nicely updated. But its real attraction is location - you can walk most anywhere in town in 5 - 10 minutes.

Yelp
Lovely hotel with inn- like feel. Very convenient location. A 5 minute walk to downtown shops and restaurants. Very friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast has keto options ( cheese and ham).

Yelp
well we thought this was great.... a smallish hotel with park-your-own parking, a text message when your room is available, if so, before the normal time. nice comfortable quiet rooms with great bath facilities and showers, breakfast was great and the dining area inviting....close to the downtown areas and restaurants, nice sitting by the fire place in the front room, and helpful and informative staff.....

Cherie S.

Yelp
We have reservations to stay here next month after their renovation. So far we have booked our room through Booking.com so I have not had many dealings with the property directly. I am hoping for lovely accommodations and a memorable stay.

Yelp
I wish I could give it more stars! We loved it so much. Location wise it is perfect, tons of parking. Especially great for walking to downtown to shops restaurants and bars. The hotel made us so comfortable. Absolutely amazing helpful front desk staff. Room and bed extremely comfortable. Walls are a bit thin so you can hear other guests but it's to be expected. Great kitchen for snacks and drinks at all hours. I'm still dreaming of the little greek yogurt parfaits that they served at breakfast. Would love to come back someday!

Yelp
Loved my stay here. Quaint hotel with modern amenities, lovely staff and in walking distance to the city downtown.

Yelp
What a fabulous stay at The Hotel Portsmouth!! Modern room amenities meet old world charm throughout this gorgeous building, cared for by very approachable and kind staff. The location was perfect, the beds/bedding super comfortable, and the breakfast small plates were delicious! We will be back.

Yelp
We had the best stay at this hotel! It felt like home. The rooms were clean and the whole hotel had a great warm and welcoming feeling. The staff was kind and extremely helpWe were able to enjoy the lobby area in the evening and have a great breakfast in the morning. We could not recommend this place more! Wish we could've stayed longer!!

Yelp
Clean, cute and quirky. Staff was great, as is the location. Within walking distance of downtown shops, plus off-street parking. Great stay- will be back!

Yelp
Charming very accommodating staff close to mainstreet. Would recommend feeling the Portmouth vibe!

Yelp
We stayed at the Hotel Portsmouth last weekend. High hopes based on the previous reviews...unfortunately, we will not be back... Check in - was great...fast and easy... Room - good sized room...king bed, one chair, and one dresser...small desk. Bathroom - CRAZY SMALL! Hook on back of door was broken...therefore, no hooks at all. Small towel bar was about to fall down. Water pressure and heat were good. Noise - no soundproofing whatsoever in the building...very noisy. Breakfast - Very disappointed. We were there for two mornings...exact same "bagged breakfast". Small fruit cup. Five pieces of spinach leaves with four grape tomatoes and a hard boiled egg. One muffin (yes, I said one) for the two people. One orange. Surprised only one and why give an orange when also got a fruit cup. I understand the rules around COVID but this was a shame...why bother. Checkout - clerk did not ask how our stay was...only said thanks for the key (not for the stay) and you are all set. Definitely not the level of warmth I would expect from a "boutique" hotel. Overall, this was on par with a Hampton Inn...not a boutique. Also surprised that I did not receive a response to this feedback that I left direct to Lark (based on their auto-survey email) after I sent it Sunday. Clearly not concerned with feedback even thought the CEO of Lark and the GM of the Hotel read every piece of feedback (according to their email). Unfortunate because the location is great!

Yelp
Cannot say enough about this place. Unique and great location! Breakfast was amazing - still thinking about those overnight oats! The staff were so helpful and friendly. Highly recommend! Love that it wasn't the typical sterile hotel room.

Michael P.

Yelp
Charming victorian house with quaint bedrooms, modern bathrooms, free parking, over the top hospitality, a light but terrific breakfast, and only a couple blocks from downtown Portsmouth. Skip the chain hotel and stay here - so much better!!

Yelp
Good place. Nice big room. Walkable to everything. Didn't really check out the breakfast too much, but the coffee was alright. Staff was friendly. Would stay here again, but would request a room on the back side of the place so as to not hear the traffic. Only real downside, if you could call it that, was that you had to exit the bathroom to wash your hands. Which is just weird, but not really that big of deal. The claw foot tub is nice, but would take it out and do something else with the bathroom.

Christine C.

Yelp
Had a great stay last month. Perfect location. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Two tiny suggestions are to add a card swipe to the hotel's back door and a few more lights here and there. Yogurt and overnight oats made for a great breakfast. Warm cider in the afternoon, too.

Yelp
What an unexpected treasure! When headed to a conference, I had failed to make my reservation in time and refused to pay the going rate at the conference hotel. This was less than half the price but so much nicer and only a half-mile away. Rather than being a standard corporate-type hotel, this is an old mansion converted to a sort of bed and breakfast/hotel hybrid with a retro vibe. Unlike a B&B, it's not a home so there isn't that awkward invasion of personal space thing. There is a breakfast. Not cooked food, but serve yourself with better than the usual choices. In addition to what you would expect, they have less typical options such as almond milk and a pre-made cup of peanut butter, banana and oatmeal. And the coffee is good. Each room has a growler for you to fill with filtered water, so much nicer than wasteful bottles. In short, I'll go here first for the next conference!
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing little boutique hotel in Portsmouth, NH that feels like a B&B. Superb location with a 3 minute walk to the main part of town. Rooms are incredibly cute with beautifully updated baths and modern colors but still paying homage to the seaside town. Our 3rd floor room had a skylight over the bed and an effective, quiet window a/c, charming eaves but still plenty of headroom to walk around and be comfortable. Now the breakfast....I can't rave enough!!! Homemade blueberry bread, peach scones, incredible coffee (cream, almond milk!!) and fresh fruit including ripe peaches & plums, granola, oatmeal, gluten free options, etc. We felt pampered! Beautifully updated bath with a great glass enclosed shower & high end toiletries. I have to admit I popped the Lather Lavender & Lime lotion in my bag after I used it. Shame to let the rest go to waste! Also there's an iPad in our room on top of the alarm clock loaded with local attractions. We'd stay here again in a heartbeat!!!

Yelp
I don't know how a place could be much better. This is a true gem! An historic Victorian shipbuilder's mansion built in the 1880's, it has the look and feel of a classic New England B&B. But, the renovations have made this a marvel of high end, updated, top notch amenities that take this several steps above a B&B. From the moment you approach this stately mansion, you know you'll be in a great place. The wood paneled lobby and the sitting rooms exude charm and character. Free wifi that is lightning fast - when have you seen that in your typical hotel? The individual rooms are filled with a warm, welcoming feeling that instantly makes you glad you came. The marble shower, soft close toilet seats, the feather pillows, the down filled duvet, spectacular toiletries (it DOES make a difference!), the flat screen on the wall with premium HD channels, in room iPad, free parking...all amazing. They've honestly thought of everything. The "continental" breakfast is more than your typical pre-packaged muffins. Oh yes, my friend. Here you will find homemade peach scones and Maine blueberry bread, fresh local fruit (ripe plums, peaches, bananas..), premium coffee ( not your run of the mill hotel coffee, this is legit!), outdoor seating. Oh yes, this is a great place in which to wake up. Oh, and as if that's not enough? Still unconvinced? You are right around the block from downtown Portsmouth and tons of eateries, breweries, New England shops that will keep you busy for hours. I can't recommend this more highly. I don't want to leave....

Josh G.

Yelp
Mistakenly called this Hotel trying to get a hold of another hotel i used to work at with a question about a paycheck. No, "sorry sir you have the wrong number" or " I'm sorry you must have mistaken us with another hotel". Just hostility right out of the gate from the man who claimed he was a manager. No elaboration on the miscommunication, just "NO you do not work here", laughing at me over the phone, and just being straight up rude because he didn't recognize my name over a misunderstanding. Not a huge deal, but the "manager" is an asshole and don't expect to be treated well if he doesn't already know you by name.

Yelp
We stayed one night this week of June. Great central location with easy walk to center. Historic building converted to hotel. Clean. Staff is incredibly accommodating and helped us with suggestions for dinning, places to see and sitting dour dog! Family issue necessitated that we departed early and encountered no problems with check out. Definitely recommend. John M Conte

Yelp
Our stay at the Hotel Portsmouth was extremely disappointing. While I understand COVID precautions and changes to service, my party thought serving the exact same ice-cold bagged breakfast for three days was unacceptable. One muffin for two people? I expect better from an establishment that presents itself as a boutique hotel! Earlier in our trip we stayed at an Inn in Wolfeboro, where we were served a delightful hot breakfast each morning. It can be done, but it would also require some effort and creativity on the part of the hotel.. Another huge disappointment was the lack of access to the public rooms. One of the reasons we chose The Hotel Portsmouth was because as a party of three we needed a place to gather outside our rooms. The information that the public spaces are closed is not present on their website. It felt to us as if we paid boutique hotel prices but were provided with a Hampton Inn experience. Finally, one of our rooms (204) was not in good repair. There was no hook for towels on the back of the door. The towel bar over the toilet was loose, and the towel ring by the vanity repeatedly fell off the wall. Combine those annoyances with our concerns above and horribly loud neighbors overhead that kept us awake for two nights in a row, and it was a relief to leave. The Hotel Portsmouth was the last stop in a two week trip, and the only disappointment. They failed to meet our expectations for hospitality, food, or room comfort. I would be hesitant to try another Lark property based on our experience at the Hotel Portsmouth.

Yelp
Beautiful hotel. Such comfy beds, Delicious breakfast included with overnight oats, yogurt, fresh fruit... all the goodies. It was an easy walk to shops and restaurants. I also really appreciated how green the hotel was. The only disposable things we came across were napkins - they use real dishes and silverware for breakfast and in the rooms which also makes for a nicer experience. Would definitely recommend!!

Samantha S.

Yelp
Such a cute hotel with a homey feel. This isn't a hotel where you are just a paying customer. You are treated like family. The location is within walking distance to everything- bars, restaurants, parks, and waterfront. The bed and pillows were so comfortable. Rooms were quiet, well decorated and spotless. The bathroom and shower were excellent. Hair dryer and iron provided along with shampoo, soap, face wash and conditioner. Cute little breakfast provided daily with a variety of offerings. Muffins, toast, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, and fruits. Good coffee and water available at al times. I would 100% stay at this hotel again. So glad we picked this one!

Selina S.

Yelp
We just checked out of Hotel Portsmouth this morning and I have to say we absolutely loved our stay! We stayed for 2 days in the penthouse suite, we are a family of 4. The penthouse suite was more like an apartment, the master bed was in a sep room and there were twin beds in the larger room for our teenagers. First off the impression of the hotel was wonderful, it was the first time we stayed in a hotel like this, and it was like being in a doll house. Loved the character and craftsmanship of the build. The room was large and the beds so comfy. Location was amazing, we walked to town and it was just so much fun shopping in such delightful boutiques! But what set this place apart was the service! I emailed a few days in advance stating it would be my daughter's bday when we arrive, and Tyr one of the front desk staff immediately responded and said he would create a list of things he thought she might enjoy. When we arrived we met him and he really did an amazing job, left her a bday treat on the bed and created a color coded map and list of places to shop and eat! We went to all but one! I was not expecting such a thorough list! It really made her bday-she instantly fell in love with the town and said it was the best bday she's had. We made so many memories! And coming back to such a comfortable hotel made it even better. Thank you for such an amazing stay!!!

William C.

Yelp
Just a quick note of appreciation for the high level of professionalism, service and hospitality. I booked THP through a third party website, non refundable, to take my amazing paramedic EMT girlfriend away for the weekend and all things COVID. Several hours later I was led into a conference room at my job and told that my position was being eliminated due to the poor economy. Bye. I called THP after my girlfriend and I decided that fun in Portsmouth had to wait. A gentleman named Peter, without any hesitation, honored my request to hold my reservation - for up to a year - giving us time to regroup and visit the property under happier circumstances. After the rollercoaster we have been through, his actions were greatly appreciated and were above and beyond anything we expected. As a resident of Portsmouth living "away" now, this gesture reminded me of what a special place Portsmouth really is and why it will always be home for me. Thank you, sir, for demonstrating true hospitality.
google avatar

Bruce B.

Yelp
Overall our stay was positive. The room was comfortable although we had to ask for a space heater and a comforter as the temperature in the building had gone down. I thought the bagged breakfasts were a bit absurd as well as the staff nagging guests to put their masks on it seemed every 5 minutes.
google avatar

John O.

Yelp
This hotel, with charm and style from the turn of the prior century, combined with modern showers and a warm and welcoming staff and delightful breakfast ditties would be enough of a reason to stay, but Portsmouth is the most walkable city I know. Restaurants, seafood, coffee shops, beer & wine bars, live music, water-side dining, a short walk over a bridge to Maine, right off of I95, historic buildings and sites, ................... Somehow New Hampshire drivers learned that pedestrians rule! If you look at the street, the traffic stops in case you might want to cross. My favorite kitchen supply store - Le Roux, flower shop - Flower Kiosk, toy store - Treehouse Toys all within a block of each other. Loads more!

Yelp
Just found out we were NOT given the garden suite that is shown on their website that I thought I had booked. Absolutely flabergasted this happened. When we checked in I was told we were getting the "handicapped garden room which had more leg room." Great location, about a brisk 5 minute walk to the major downtown area and Strawberry Banke. Old restored hotel with charm and ambiance. I would have given it a higher rating...but...we stayed in one of two pet-friendly rooms in the basement. Uh yeah. One small window and right outside the stairwell and outside door to parking lot and next to housekeeping. Lots of slamming and running all night long. Walls not very insulated, so you could also hear people waking and creaking from the floor above. The staff is great, the room was clean, but I think we will stick with the Sheraton Portsmouth (almost same price and they have more amenities and closer to downtown.
google avatar

Arthur S.

Yelp
Great spot in the heart of Portsmouth...a short walk to all the shops and restaurants. There are two rooms in the front of the building that you can sit by the fire and converse with others or just sit alone. There is also a bar in the basement; however, it is not stocked, nor does it have a bartender. We brought our own drinks down and played bartender for the night, as we played games belly-up to the bar. The rooms were clean with a TV and bathroom was updated. The kitchen supplies breakfast and light snacks and coffee throughout the day/night. Staff is excellent and I will definitely go back if I'm in the area.

Yelp
What a beautiful place! The Hotel Portsmouth is just a quick walk from Portsmouth's lovely downtown. I used Booking.com to get a king room for my boyfriend's birthday, and later on called the hotel asking for a king suite which they were more than accommodating with. They even were able to accommodate my request for a champagne bucket to be placed in the room for our wine. Beautiful room with a claw foot bathtub and plenty of space to have a couple friends hang out in the room. Upon checkout we were even given a voucher for $30 towards our next stay, and we will definitely be back!
google avatar

Gretchen B.

Yelp
Great location. You are within walking distance to everything in Portsmouth. Just park the car and walk everywhere. My mom, sister and I had a king suite which was nice. The beds were very comfy. The only downside was that there was not a mini fridge in the room. It would have been nice to have. The shower is a little weird. You have to stand in it to turn it on, so when you flip it to the shower setting, even if you let the water run and warm up before flipping the switch, you get a little shock of cold and then it's OK. They do offer a continental breakfast. I can't really speak to it as we went out for breakfast each day. During the day they offer coffee, water and little snacks which is nice. They left a little bag of cookies and a nice note for my sister in celebration of her birthday. That was a nice touch. This is a good place to stay if coming to Portsmouth. I'd stay here again.

Yelp
Spent two nights in the fabulous inn while on a New England coastal tour. Everything is welcoming from the moment you enter the front door. Cool public spaces such as the den that felt like the sea captain had only stepped out for a moment. Games out for anyone wanting to relax and unwind. The parlor was also nicely appointed in a cool chic vibe that paid compliment to the historic house. Our room was nice and I found the bed Very comfortable- the whole place made me want to chill and just stay on the property! Breakfast was great each morning and I loved the small plate choices of different foods. Only issue is we could hear people on the floor above us when they came in late in the evening. Location is an easy walk to the main city center. Will stay here again!

Sheila C.

Yelp
Loved this place! Great location, breakfast and free parking Comfy sitting rooms with vintage charm Throughout the inn Will definitely go back!

Lydia G.

Yelp
What a find! Reasonable rates. Simple, clean accommodations with an inn feel. Friendly staff and quiet comforts. There during Covid and their guidelines were clear. The bagged breakfast was wonderful. The Hotel is within walking distance to everything we wanted to do in Portsmouth during our stay. We will definitely go back!

Yelp
I really enjoyed my stay at the Hotel Portsmouth. Check in was a breeze, the room was comfortable, and the breakfast and sparkling water on tap were a nice addition. A great place to stay and a short walk to downtown.

K S.

Yelp
Very nice hotel. Staff was super friendly. Parking was great. Location was the best. The lobby had 2 impressive rooms to hang out in. Super quiet location. Steps from downtown. We walked everywhere. No need to get in the car once you get there. The only concerns we had was there was no mini-fridge in the room so we couldn't keep any food or cold water in the room without using the ice bucket and window a/c which was a challenge to keep the room cool but we would happily stay there again and tell our friends.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is fantastic! Clean, modern and welcoming. The all inclusiveness makes this a great place to stay for a getaway. At first we were questioning the cost of two nights. But once you include the fantastic and healthy breakfast, wifi, welcoming our friends and giving them free parking(!) 24 hour coffee and snacks, AND the unadvertised concierge service, it was well worth it. Josh and his crew were accommodating, welcoming and gracious. I couldn't have asked for s better weekend. Go, go, go... then stay and enjoy the hotel and the town and all it has to offer.

Yelp
I remember when this inn used to be the Sise Inn, and it's housed in a Stick Style Victorian mansion. The inn is within walking distance to many shops and restaurants in Portsmouth. It has a wooden staircase leading to the rooms. They served an assortment of muffins and pastries for breakfast.

Yelp
***Management has NOT been in contact with us, as noted by Abby H./The Hotel Portsmouth's response. That comment is literally the most we have heard from the hotel & clearly it is not great. We are still waiting for a phone call and a resolution. Save yourself the cash and stay elsewhere. I would NOT be writing this review if we had heard back from management, but my husband and I called & emailed with no response, it has been almost a week since our stay. Horrible experience is a understatement. My husband and I stayed at Hotel Portsmouth last weekend for two nights in the Garden Suite. Upon arrival we noticed the claw foot tub we planned to soak in was filthy and the floor in the bedroom had food all over it. We decided to not say anything and go on with our evening. After all we are on vacation! When we got back from dinner, it was around 10pm and we were ready for bed. We try to unlock the door to our room and the key won't open it. We asked for help from the man at the front desk, and he told us this is common and really annoying. He would need to call maintenance (not in house)and we could either go back out again or wait in the lounge for them to open our room. We asked if we could just switch rooms, but the vacant two room were dirty. We ended up falling asleep in the lobby and they woke us up when the door was opened. Not a great way to start. The next day we tried to reach a manager by the phone in our room to talk about the previous night and discuss the mess. The phone rang and rang. No answer. No help. Got dressed early, no one at the front desk either. Still no communication. Ran into other guest that were also looking for help, nobody around. Everyone left to enjoy vacation away from the hotel. When we got back our room (late afternoon) was still dirty. No one came in during our entire stay to clean. Tried the front desk again. No answer. Left the phone to ring, nobody picked up. Decided our stay was so bad we would check out as early as possible. We asked the woman at the front (YES, apparently people do work at this hotel)to speak with the manager, it was Tues morning and we were told she would not be working until the following day and we should email her. The woman at the desk told us she would give us a refund for our stay and this happens often. Not great to hear that this is a common occurrence, but happy to know we could discuss our situation with management soon. It's now Thursday afternoon, we still have not heard anything from a manager. Super upset. My husband and I are left feeling horrible about our vacation. At the price we paid, we could have stayed at a much nicer place, that's clean, safe and with friendly service. I also, would have never written this if we had any contact with the hotel but I feel I have no other choice. Save yourself the cash and stay elsewhere.

Yelp
With a birthday group of 12 women, the hotel Portsmouth felt like home. Accommodating in so many ways. We had a bar, with our own alcohol, all to ourselves for the weekend. We danced, sang, ate and drank together without strangers putting a damper on our fun. Close to everything Portsmouth has to offer, we never needed a car or Uber to get out to restaurants or bars. What a fun area! Thank you Hotel Portsmouth for the best weekend ever!

Yelp
My daughter and I stayed here a week or so ago. The check-in guy was unfriendly and basically gave us the key and told us about breakfast hours. It seemed he had something important to look at on his computer so the encounter was brusque. We hauled our bags through the front door not knowing that they had a rear lot for the car and an elevator to get the bags to our room. We found out later that you can't park on the street or you'll get ticketed. Would have been nice to hear this from the check-in guy. Our room was very plain, basic, and in need of updating like other parts of the hotel, i.e., the front room that's pictured on their site. In reality, it's dilapidated. The room was clean but we found several carpet beetles on the sofa and bedding. Kind of an eew moment. After spending a couple of weeks traveling through Cape Cod, New England, and Maine, we had a good handle on what to expect at breakfast. HP's was very nondescript and mediocre, kind of like our entire experience there. The only friendly person we met was the housekeeper. This is the best Portsmouth has to offer? Astounding! Especially given the cost of $343/night. We had far nicer lodging on our trip for less money.

Yelp
We stayed 4 nights here over the 4th of July holiday. We had a great visit. The staff accommodated my ridiculous request of not staying on the 2nd floor.. breakfast was great. A nice, short walk to the downtown area. Our room was clean and comfortable. If we are ever back in the area, I would definitely stay again!

Yelp
Had such high hopes for this trip but it fell short. We booked a deluxe queen room for one night. Our issues were "small" but it's what prevented us from really enjoying the room. The noise level above us prevented us from getting a good nights sleep (even with our fan and noise machine on) along with the AC window unit issues. It wasn't set properly which left gaps on either side (and we were nervous it may fall or that someone would just push it in and jump into our room). There also looked to be mold above it on the shade from the condensation? The weather was extreme since we were in a heat advisory so it was tough to cool the room down. We didn't notice this issue until later unfortunately and didn't feel comfortable reaching out so late right before bed time as we were tired. We had reached out prior to booking to make sure there were room-darkening/black out shades. They informed me that there were but when we got there we noticed the window unit for AC prevented us from actually closing the shades on that window. We ended up tying the curtains up with two of my hair ties and clipping the middle together to provide some relief of the brightness. Like I said these are smaller issues but it was what made out trip difficult since we couldn't sleep well.

Yelp
Stopped in the town on a whim and wanted to spend the night. Found that this place was the highest reviewed hotel in the city, and boy there those 5 stars dead on. Friendly service, this place is fantastic! Everything is within walking distance of the hotel and the breakfast in the morning is unlike any hotel breakfast you've ever had!

Yelp
Super helpful staff! They even sent a welcoming email prior to arrival day with excellent directions to the hotel/parking lot. That was a nice touch. Ice machine and filtered water always available in the dining room. Just wish more than certain areas were air conditioned. It was uncomfortably warm at the Reception Desk and even took until after sunset for our room to cool down.

Yelp
Ask questions if you reserve by phone! I just got socked with a 25.00 charge on two rooms = 50.00. I had to cancel well within the normal limited time. The excuse was that it was written in my confirmation email (my fault here for only checking the dates and confirmation number) however once you make the reservation this charge goes into effect and when you get the confirmation it's too late you've already booked. There is no way I would have booked if I'd been told that little bit of information. Nice trick! Bad business!

Yelp
Be.A.Utiful! Unique, well-crafted, beautiful, convenient! Our room was comfortable and inviting, and for Southerners unaccustomed to air conditioning units (as opposed to central air), this was a fantastic and comfortable stay. The bed and pillows were discussed well after our stay, and the location itself was convenient to significant fun of current and historical significance. Nearby - not described as "fun" but definitely identified as important and beautiful - is an African American Burial Site/Cemetery memorial. Do yourself some good by reading the memorializing and truthful poetry. Take a short walk to The Portsmouth Brewery, and enjoy the refreshment of Libeeration Ale - a beer described as made with women in mind, low on hops and including nine herbs. Refreshing, and paired well with their Falafel Pocket. Afterward slip into the cool sheets of your bed at this hotel and dream of the patrons who graced the well-crafted staircase.

Yelp
We stayed here because our room was overbooked at the Sheraton suites in Portsmouth and we were bumped out of there! Feeling a little frustrated & weary of the change, we headed over to the Hotel Portsmouth and were pleasantly surprised! Very accommodating and welcoming staff. The room was clean and modern. Very nice size shower. iPad in the room loaded with links to local attractions, flat screen tv and very comfortable bed. Bonus bathrobes! Would definitely stay here again & hopefully soon!

Yelp
Very charming small hotel - quaint rooms with a beautiful interior and comfortable shared common rooms. Ryan, the young gentleman manning the front desk, was very professional and eager to give help- smiling always The town Portsmouth is a lot of fun and we had a really nice stay at this hotel.
