I stayed at The Hotel Seiryu in Kyoto two years ago and had an amazing experience, so I was excited to return. The rooms are still beautiful and the service is great, but this time around, I couldn’t help but feel like everything came with a steep price tag.||We were charged around $8 for a small cup of hot milk for our one-year-old. Breakfast, which I remember being included before, now costs $25 for a basic continental option with bacon or sausage. If you want something like an omelette, it jumps to $40. I could be misremembering, but during our last stay, breakfast was part of the nightly rate (which is nearly $1500) and it was truly special — they even had a violinist playing during the weekend.||Reserving the bath, which isn’t even an onsen, was another $70. We also had some family staying nearby who would stop by to spend time with our baby while we stepped out, and we were constantly reminded about the room capacity, as if we were sneaking guests in. It felt unnecessarily strict, especially given how much we were already paying.||One more thing to note — we booked this hotel thinking it was part of the AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts program, but when we checked in, we were told it no longer is. That was misleading and disappointing.||It’s still a gorgeous property with great staff, but for the price, I expected more value and fewer charges for basic comforts. If you’re okay with overspending, it can still be an enjoyable stay. But for us, unless the experience becomes more balanced, we probably won’t be returning.
