The Most Exciting Hotel Openings of 2023

"No one does retro-cool quite like The Hoxton. After opening in Barcelona and Shepherd's Bush in 2022, 2023 will see more exciting hotels springing up. This opening in Brussels will have a 1970s flavor to it, as well as the first outpost of the group’s co-working brand Working From_ in Europe. Also coming this year, a Hoxton in Berlin."

The Hoxton, Brussels (Brussels, Belgium) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"It all started in Shoreditch, East London in 2006 and now this cool hotel brand has spread far and wide. This Brussels outpost opened in 2023 and houses 198 bedrooms boasting a subtle ’70s groove but with better technology. In the rooms, materials like velvet contrast with concrete structural elements, and the pleasingly retro colors are a far cry from the minimalism of the previous generation of boutique hotels." - Tablet Hotels

This Brussels Hotel’s Interior Champions a 1970s Revival Aesthetic - Hotels Above Par - Boutique Hotels & Travel

"Housed in a former IBM European headquarters brutalist tower, the hotel pairs 1970s-inspired design with raw, modern touches: polished plaster walls, bold geometrics, Belgian-sourced vintage furniture and vibrant bespoke murals by Madeleine Schilling and Claire de Quenetain. Lush plantings throughout reference the neighboring Botanical Gardens, while a spacious lobby is designed for lounging and socializing around a retro-tinged coffee bar that becomes a cocktail spot at night. The 198 guestrooms come in three sizes—Cozy, Roomy and Biggy—and mix retro hues with lacquered finishes, velvet upholstery, marble highlights, walnut cabinets and bold rugs to create a dark, moody atmosphere; bathrooms feature putty-pink basins set against deep blue tiles and oversized terrazzo floors. Practical touches and amenities include a ground-floor restaurant, bars, a coffee shop, meeting rooms and pet-friendly policies; rooms are noted for small period details such as a vintage radio on the nightstand that reinforces the revitalized 1970s vibe. Rated four-star, rates start around $171 and the hotel sits next to the Botanical Gardens, with Brussels Airport as the closest airport."

Brussels' charms lie beyond its chocolate and waffles - SilverKris

"Housed in an impressive Brutalist former IBM headquarters beside the botanical garden, this fashionable London-born outpost (opened June 2023) channels a ’70s aesthetic—think velvet sofas and some rooms with circular baths. The food programme leans Latin American, with a downstairs Peruvian spot offering punchy plates and a raw bar and a rooftop restaurant serving Mexican tacos and mezcal-forward cocktails." - Clodagh Kinsella

I had a wonderful stay at The Hoxton Brussels. The location is excellent, making it easy to explore the city, and the hotel itself is stylish, comfortable, and beautifully designed. We enjoyed a delicious New Year’s Eve dinner at the Cantina — great food and a fantastic atmosphere. But what truly made the difference was the exceptional staff. Everyone was friendly, professional, and genuinely caring. I accidentally left my AirPods in my room after check-out, and the team quickly found them, kept me informed, and were incredibly patient and helpful while I arranged a courier to retrieve them. Their support made the whole process smooth and stress-free. Outstanding service from start to finish. I will definitely return and highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Brussels.

The hotel is AMAZING!!! The staff is super friendly & welcoming, the food at Cantina Valentina is super delicious and savoury, amazing cocktails at the rooftop TOPE with the dj set. Room service is fast & delicious 5AM breakfast bag with fresh croissants !||We had a corner room which was the best experience!! The bed and pillows are extremely comfortable. The hotel is well situated at the city center.||We’ll come back for sure!! A big THANK YOU!!

The hotel is in a wonderful location. Close to the North train station, streetcar and metro and just as close to the city center. The view and the retro design of the room is something I haven't seen anywhere else and was fantastic. The hotel itself is quiet and you can't hear the other guests. Many people say in various comments that this area is dangerous. I have to disagree with that. I felt safe the whole time. The bar on the first floor is very cozy, has plenty of choice and the waiters are just as friendly as everyone else who works there. If I ever vacation in the area again, this will be my hotel again.

We had a wonderful stay at The Hoxton with our friends while visiting! The rooms were extremely spacious, and the entire hotel has such a beautiful charm. We were on the top floor and the views were fantastic. The location was great, and the staff were absolutely incredible throughout our stay. Be sure to check out the rooftop bar for great food and drinks. Highly recommended!

Great stay at The Hox Brussels. Warm welcome of Sara when we arrived at the hotel. Then we went directly for some lunch where Adelina and Leah helped us get a nice spot and good food. After the whole day out we ended the day on the rooftop with the help of Luna I tried the cinnamon sail (really nice) and in the morning a warm welcome of Alexandro since we couldn’t leave with out a nice breakfast

The design of this hotel is impeccable. However, hotel is located in a dodge area, you can smell leaf every night out of the hotel. The neighborhood has no surrounding restaurants or cafe bar or supermarkets or shopping mall, the only thing you can do is to stay in the hotel after 7pm. It’s not safe for girls to stay in. I ordered “little something” in the morning, however I received nothing. Nevertheless, it’s not expensive for a Hoxton hotel, the overall hotel ambiance is really chill.

Beautiful hotel with very stylish rooms. Fancy without being opulent, while maintaining a laid-back and modern vibe. The location is very convenient, and the view from the higher rooms out over the botanical gardens and city was amazing. We booked the room with the tub, and now I want the exact same one in my home— beautiful and so relaxing! The whole hotel was spotless, including the gym, which was also more equipped than I was expecting and a nice surprise. The hotel was extremely quiet near the rooms but still had a low-buzzing bar in the lobby, which really added to the ambience. The standout feature was the staff, especially at the front desk. They were so genuinely friendly and kind, and we appreciated their advice and helpfulness throughout our stay. I can genuinely say this was one of the best overall hotel experiences that I have had, and I would recommend it to anyone traveling for business or pleasure!

We had considered booking The Hoxton in several other cities before, but after this stay, I’m genuinely glad we never did.||||The location is terrible. The surrounding neighborhood is sketchy, dirty, and uncomfortable, and walking to the north train station felt unsafe every single day (even in daylight) . This alone should be reason enough to avoid this hotel entirely.||||Once inside, it becomes obvious very quickly that guest comfort is not a priority. At check-in, the first question wasn’t about welcoming us, but whether we even wanted room cleaning—and if “half cleaning” would be enough. Absolutely not. If I didn’t want proper cleaning, I would have booked an apartment, not a hotel at this price point.||||The bath bomb situation was honestly absurd. We booked a room with a huge bathtub. We received upon check in two cute macaron bath bombs and were explicitly told we could request more if we wanted. When we actually did ask for more later, the receptionist reacted oddly, questioned the request, and made us feel uncomfortable—borderline rude. Why offer something if guests are then judged for taking them up on it? ||||The bathroom itself only made things worse: no heating whatsoever. The floor was ice cold, the towel rack wasn’t warm, and stepping out of a hot bath into a freezing bathroom was miserable. When I asked if they had some slippers they looked at me as if I asked for a gold bar. Hoxton doesn’t offer stuff like that. Well I should have guessed. ||||Amenities are basically nonexistent—no vanity kit, no face towels, nothing that would suggest any level of comfort or luxury. This is a very basic hotel pretending to be a boutique experience. We had a queen size bed which was tiny. ||||Staff attitude was another major disappointment. Reception staff, especially in the evenings, rarely greeted guests and seemed more interested in chatting among themselves than acknowledging anyone arriving or passing by. On our checkout Sunday, we wanted to grab a final coffee at the bar. The bartender didn’t say hello or make any effort to engage—just bluntly stated, “Sorry, I have a lot of orders,” making it clear there was no chance of being served. The cleaning stuff was really nice, friendly and smiley! They did their job amazing. The two stars are definitely because of them!||||Overall, this place is massively overrated. The hotel appears far more concerned with projecting an environmental image than with delivering a genuinely comfortable or welcoming guest experience. If you value safety, warmth, basic hospitality, and professional service, do yourself a favor and stay elsewhere. I wish we had booked Amigo or Corinthia instead.
