I booked The Hoxton, Lloyd Amsterdam because it’s part of the American Express Hotel Collection.
Usually, Amex vetted properties are a safe bet, but my experience here suggests that travelers should go in with specific expectations.
The Highlights: The hotel is visually stunning. If you appreciate inspirational design, you’ll love the common areas and rooms, which are filled with colorful interiors, great art, and a fun, modern energy. The restaurant staff were also a highlight and consistently warm and accommodating. The hotel is in the Eastern Docklands, which has a cool, industrial vibe. It is very accessible to Centraal Station via a quick tram ride. Neighborhood is generally lowkey and quiet with a supermarket, drug store, and other shops across the street.
Things to Keep in Mind: While the hotel is beautiful, the service style is quite cold, disinterested and inconsistent. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you’re planning a stay:
Don’t be surprised if your room isn't ready exactly at the stated check-in time. If there is a delay, the hotel may offer a complimentary coffee, tea, or soft drink while you wait.
Additionally, there is no help with luggage upon arrival and expect to have to travel up two short flights of stairs. The handicap entrance is through the back of the hotel restaurant on an electronic outdoor elevator. If traveling with kids you will need to lift strollers or take the back entrance. Additionally, one of the two elevators was broken throughout our stay, if you can’t take the stairs be prepared to wait.
Upon arrival, our room hadn't been fully serviced, and the mini-fridge still contained an open milk carton. Our room was also not cleaned after the first night and we had to call to get fresh towels and trash removed. Based on other reviews, these housekeeping misses seem to happen occasionally, so it’s worth double-checking your room as soon as you get your key and also requesting (and confirming) housekeeping as it seems this is not the norm at this property.
If you plan on using the hotel bikes, be aware the fleet is small and some may be out of service (3/6 were broken during our visit). Bikes are first come first served so be prepared to rent if you plan to bike.
Note that there are no robes or slippers provided and no individual thermostats in the rooms to control the temperature.
The hotel communicates primarily via WhatsApp. It’s efficient for non-urgent needs, but it isn’t a traditional concierge desk. If you need help with bookings or specific recommendations you’ll be on your own. If you have issues Management may not follow up with you even when the staff indicates they will.
If you are a "design-first" traveler, you will love it; if you are a "service-first" traveler, you may want to look elsewhere. I would not come back here.
