The Hump Youth Hostel

Stayed end Nov 2025 - This hostel ticks al the boxes of what a hostal is EXCEPT for one thing (read more below) …central location & near metro stations (Kunming metro is fast and seems brand new). It has a rooftop bar and a bar. Heavy doors seperate it from the dorms and guest rooms so it is sound proof. Dorm rooms are spacious, each bed is its own alcove and are equipped with a reading light, shelves and curtain. The matresses are super hard, better topper would be better. Than again; hard is the norm in China. The execption is the service at the reception desk. This hostal is suited for Chinese travelers. Foreigners, they see, but the staff is unprepaired for any questions (even in my bad Chinese language…) Instead of proavtively offering the information, they sent a link in Chinese language that -translated- does not reply the question Furthermore I found the place very impersonal; lots of dorm rooms, like a small factory, no social ambiance (everyone on their phone at the bar). They promote activities but at the time of stay, there were none. Pity.

Great spot downtown for first timers to Kunming. Hostel had everything we needed for a stress free stay. Staff helpful and happy to use the translator! We were in a family room. Beds comfy, daily towel changes which was nice. The bar was great and we had no complaints. Would recommend.

Extremely spacious hostel complex which includes a restaurant and a bar. It is decorated uniquely and beautifully and is located right in the city center of Kunming. The staff is very helpful too, they helped me to order something last minute before leaving the next day. Highly recommended!

Fantastic stay at this super hostel, with a good vibe day on both the gorgeous terrace and in the bar area with a fab pool table & music. The room was perfect, great shower & amenities provided. Perfect location near everything you need. Very helpful staff. Would return here!

I knew the style in Kunming hostels is that the shower and basin areas are shared between men and women when booking, but got cold feet when I saw it for myself. Thankfully the staff helped me get a full refund for the paid dorm room so I could make a new booking for a single room instead. The location is good for folks who like to walk 1 to 2 km easy walking paths to attractions and train stations. The cleaning team was very good and cleaned my room well everyday. The single room provided 1 hair dryer, 2 toothbrush, 1 comb, 2 bath towels, 2 hand towels, 2 bottled water and 2 paper cups every day. 2 tea bags and 1 water boiler. There is also a room where you can take free hot water near the public washroom. The attractions of walking distance is mostly to the north of the hostel, while the attractions in the south needs bus or train transport. Bring an umbrella and plastic slippers during summer for when you get caught in the lovely rain. The hostel design theme is pub and bar, so expect alcohol and tobacco smell as you pass by the public space to reach your rooms. The pub/bar area is also where hostel visitors have their breakfast and mingle. There are plenty of nice roof top open air spaces and open air corridors as well. Overall a pleasant stay, but I would try another hostel if you dislike tobacco smell when having meals or when you want to mingle with other travellers. 

Location is perfect, right at the end of the main pedestrian street. Nice bar and chill out area available, plus a roof top with some view. There are big beds and storage facilities, however the mattress as such was very thin and hard (as often within China). Sometimes there was a weird smell in the mixed washroom area. Overall, a nice place to stay for some nights - recommended!

The hotel staff were super helpful during check-in, and they even allowed us to store our luggage after checkout, which was perfect since we wanted to explore the area a bit more. It's located very close to Shuncheng Street, and the halal food street is just a short walk away, which was really convenient.The overall stay was really nice — they have a cozy bar area where you can relax and chill. The only downside was the bed, which seemed like it hadn’t been used in a while, and unfortunately, we did encounter a bed bug. That said, everything else made it a pleasant experience.

Very good location!! And good view to see Kuming at night from bacolny.Many cheap restaurants behind the hostel.Short walk to the tourist spots.Only smell from cooking outside come into the room all times, smell of the toilet and cigarette in general area. Even though they open all windows and doors for the fresh air, but help less.
