Been booking at the Hump Hostel for 10 years, both hostel dorms and private rooms. It's always a pleasant experience. I don't like how the business doesn't provide bath towels for hostel tenants. I know it's optional under the new Chinese law but I think they could do better. It's like a museum. The hallways and some of the private rooms are decorated with WW2 artifacts. Best location in Kunming. A bit of a walk or taxi ride to the nearest metro stations.

I stayed at this hostel with some initial hesitation, but it turned out to be a good choice. While it requires a short walk from the nearest metro station, the location is excellent, i.e. right in the heart of one of Kunming’s liveliest districts. Nanping Street is just across the road and a variety of affordable eateries are conveniently located behind the property. The hostel shares a floor with a bar, which can be noisy, particularly on weekends. On occasion, guests smoke inside the bar, and the smoke and sound may drift into the rooms. Fortunately, the management has installed two doors to buffer the noise between the hostel and bar, though these are sometimes left open.During my stay, there was a disruptive guest in my shared room who snored loudly and allowed his phone to ring throughout the night. On the second night, his friends entered the room around 1 a.m. to retrieve his belongings, switching on the lights and waking everyone. I reported this to the manager, who took the matter seriously and addressed it with the guest upon check-out.in terms of facilities, the hostel is well-equipped. There are ample toilets and showers though a few of the shower heads could use some maintenance. Body wash and shampoo are provided, though some cubicles may have mislabeled dispensers. Guests can also enjoy a snooker table, fridge and complimentary drinking water at the bar, with additional hot water available near the restrooms. Washing machines are available for a fee. While some front desk staff were less approachable, others were genuinely helpful. In particular, the supervisor (if I recall correctly, Mr Tai) stood out for his kindness and assistance. He provided valuable advice on attractions worth visiting and helped me make the most of my trip to Kunming. Two other staff members (sorry didn’t get their names) also helped me book tickets to Stone Forest Park. All in all, this is a good place to stay, especially for budget travelers who want a central location and lively atmosphere. I’d consider staying here again on my next visit to Kunming.

This hotel is truly a hidden gem. The entrance may look small and unassuming, but once you step inside, it opens up into a spacious and beautifully designed space. There’s a pub, café, and even entertainment areas — everything you need for a relaxing stay. The room was exceptionally clean and quiet, making it perfect for rest after a long day. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for comfort and convenience in a surprisingly peaceful setting.

The hostel is nearby a market zone and a gate. It is in the upper floor (with elevator) so it has a very nice view at night. Coffee, tea and beer offer on the rooftop is also very nice. There are lockers for individual beds, the wifi works well and it is clean. They offer buffet breakfast which is also nice.

The Hump Hostel in Kunming is a lively and budget-friendly spot in the city center, perfect for meeting other travelers. It has a great rooftop with views, a bar and restaurant, and both dorms and private rooms. The staff are friendly, and the location is ideal for exploring. Firm beds and occasional bathroom issues, but overall it's a solid choice for backpackers.

I stayed in this hostel for 5 nights in total in two different private rooms with ensuite bathroom. Since this was a lonely planet recommendation I had hoped for more of a “hostel vibe” and to easily meet new people. This was completely missing (no activities, not too many people in the common area, al rather by themselves). The location is good and the staff at the reception speaks English. Mostly local tourists stay in this hotel.

The hostel is nice, close to lots of restaurants and a few nights markets. It's about 15 mins walk to any of the subway stations but there is a bus stop right outside.
