The Hungry Monkey Kiama

After a long drive down the coast from Sydney, my partner and I were keen to stop for lunch and check out what the local food scene had to offer. After browsing online and reading reviews, we decided on The Hungry Monkey. Tucked away on a cosy street surrounded by funky antique stores and bustling eateries, expectations were definitely high. We were greeted straight away with a warm smile and looked after by three young gentlemen who made us feel very welcome and well accommodated. The service was a highlight. My partner ordered the Bad Boy Burger. While he enjoyed it, he felt it was a little on the smaller side for the price and didn’t quite deliver the wow factor that many reviews rave about. I ordered the burrito, which unfortunately was a letdown for me. It was overly spicy, quite heavy on the meat and bean blend, and lacked that extra layer of flavour to really bring it together. Overall, it is definitely worth giving a go, especially given the friendly service and great location, but based on what we ordered, it just didn’t quite hit the spot for us this time.

Service was decent but food was pretty bad. We ordered a Kicker Chicken Burger which was drenched in sauce (it actually gushed out when I picked it up), a side of sweet potato fries which were soggy and luke warm, buffalo wings which were over fried and under seasoned, a side of chorizo and fried egg which were both burnt and a roasted veggie salad with crumbed chicken which was very oily and soggy (the batter fell off). Tbh I’m quite disappointed coz the venue is nice and I liked our outdoor seating. I don’t know if it’s coz it’s a long weekend and the kitchen was too busy to hold the food quality up but that’s no excuse. Please improve.

Had an excellent experience at The Hungry Monkey in Kiama. We enjoyed breakfast here twice because it was that good. On the first day I had the Eggs Benedict with chilli and dill hollandaise – absolutely delicious with the perfect amount of heat. The second day I tried the breakfast roll with chilli jam and salsa verde, and it was honestly amazing. Their coffee was spot on and the fresh juices were also fantastic. Highly recommend for a great breakfast in Kiama!

The Hungry Monkey isn’t your average burger joint — this is an upscale burger situation. Brioche buns that actually deserve the hype, better-quality meat, and sauces that clearly had some love (and effort) put into them. Put it all together and you’ve got one seriously good Hungry Monkey burger. We ordered the Classic and the Cheesy Truffle, and both delivered. The Classic does exactly what it should — clean, balanced, and comforting. The Cheesy Truffle, though… that thing is truffling with some serious shuffling. Rich, cheesy, aromatic, and absolutely not subtle in the best way possible. The sweet potato chips deserve their own shout-out. Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and dangerously addictive. Order them. No hesitation. Pro tip: come here first thing when you land in Kiama. The wait easily stretches past 30 minutes. Put your name down, then wander next door for a gelato while you wait — perfect summer multitasking. Worth the wait, worth the calories, and a must-visit if burgers are your love language. 🍔🔥

What a great place. They open really early. I had the hotcake, which was delicious and will satisfy any kind of appetite. To be honest, the description on the menu doesn't do it justice.

Absolutely lovely cafe in Kiama, the staff were so welcoming. The food was delicious and coffee fantastic. Great surroundings and you kich even meet Steve the resident Magpie, Highly recommend 👌

Food was great coffe top notch! we went here twice and it is a very popular place understandably. Has an intentional understated low-key old school house vibe. Siting out on the walkway on old park bench tables in June wasn't the coziest of experiences but good spot to catch up with large groups over brunch.

Had their Single royale burger 8/10. Friend had hot cakes wasn't expecting to be extremely salty. Mistook the salt flakes to be coconut flakes. Mouth became extremely dry after hotcakes no sugar or syrup could save him. Had the flu shot and an aerated latte. Lovely service by staff!

The burgers are juicy, salad are fresh and sweet potato chips are addictive. They have a variety of burgers available, including vegetarian menu. The meat available for the burger includes beef, pork, chicken and lamb; they got it all! The seating can be indoor and outdoor. The place is quite crowded but is worth the wait. Tasty and really worth the wait.

Great Lunch stop, southern fried chicken burger was amazing . Yummy sweet potato fries. great coffee. Fast friendly service, busy but well organized. Highly recommended.

Awesome cafe in Kiama. If you are looking for a good cup of coffee and a surprisingly good breakfast then this is the place for you. The coffee here is quite good - the cold drip is amazing. And their milk coffee is good, although on the lighter side. Came here twice on a weekend away, and loved each time. Especially if you have a dog, then have a large outdoor sitting area. However, this place is extremely popular so you might have to wait if you want that table outside.

All of Kiama's hipsters and skaters and gym kids and anyone with a Mumford and Son style felt hat and a beard and active wear and cool sneakers and sleeveless shirts and shimmery hair all hotfoot it down to this little could-be-at-Bondi cafe for a dose of the good stuff in an environment that makes people-watching as fun as eating and/or drinking. On a cracking day the outside seats are where you wanna be, otherwise hunker down inside and order pretty much anything from the kick-ass menu, it's progressive enough that you'll never get bored with the usual brunchy type dishes you've had a thousand times, they kick things up to the Pepsi Max with meals like Muscle Pancakes made with protein and cacao nibs, chilli scrambled eggs, an Acai Detox bowl with kale and coconut water, and a shitload of awesome coffee and salads and, oh yes, burgers are a thing at lunch time and there's heaps to choose from and they're epic and that's all I have to say about that.

Always the best food and the best service !! The greeter is always so attentive and makes the whole experience amazing. Have eaten here many times and have never been disappointed. I would recommend The Hungry Monkey to anyone, it's totally worth the drive !!!

We came across this cute little place on the mission to find something vegan in kiama for lunch. Yummy salads and beetroot burger(not vegan) Great atmosphere and very helpful staff would recommend to anyone heading this way yummy!

There are not a lot of places for a simple dinner in Kiama, so this place is popular. We ordered chicken and beef burger, and sweet potato chips. The food was good. They also have a good range of beers. The place was nice until a customer got inside and said there was a big spider. Well, the waiters seemed to panick, for crying outlound, this is Australia, spiders are norm. Without a word, a waiter started spraying insectide!!!!!!! With people eating inside!!!!! That was less than 5 feet away! Totally disappointed...

Food was lovely. We had bad boy burger and the rost veg salid service was quick. Considering how busy they where at the time. Thank you.

Cozy little spot down by the ocean great burgers and the service was fantastic. We had a great time I would thoroughly recommend.

Amazing burgers and fries, food fresh and delicious. Friendly and helpful staff and the coffee is no doubt the best you can get between Sydney and Jervis Bay, using White Horse coffee and single origin beans for black coffees. Spot on!

It had taken us two years and two visits to Australia to finally get to the Hungry Monkey. We had visited Kiama two years ago and stumbled upon THM, but had committed to the next door restaurant already. We knew that this time we wanted to make sure to get there. Of the four meals that we had in Kiama, three were at The Hungry Monkey. They were very welcoming and the food was fresh and delicious. The first morning, I had the purple toast with egg whites, and it was spectacular. My husband had the acai bowl, and my daughter the children's egg, bacon, and toast. We promptly went back for dinner, and then breakfast the next morning. Get there early, it fills up. They do their best to seat you where you'd like. We wanted to be outside, but it was full, so we opted for indoors on our second morning. It was just a bit too loud, and they moved us as soon as a table outside opened up. Very kind! Make sure to do yourself a favor and visit the Hungry Monkey and order the nutella mocha.

The food was good, great chicken wings but the price 3 wings for $10 and I'm sorry $20 for 6 wings was a bit much, great cider to go with it although I will try the coffee an breakfast next time and make the wings myself.

The food is ordinary and expensive. The Service is poor and staff appear unmotivated. No evidence of staff training or any customer care. Sad to see this substandard business in Kiama.

This place was great. My wife and I got a bowl of Acai. It looked so beautiful shimmering in the sunlight, I just wanted to look at it. But when the timing was right, I began eating the luscious fruits and berries. Thanks Hungry Monkey! My bowel movements have never been better.

Best burger and chips in town. This place is in one the terraces in Collins Street and is very popular for good reason. Great coffee too.
