Google
Travellers, the hungry monkey is a fine breakfast/lunch restaurant in downtown Newport. The restaurant is very cute and the service is with a smile. The eggs Benedict were excellent as were the eggs Benedict florentine with spinach and tomatoes. The veggie omelet was delicious as are all the omelets here. The grits left something to be desired. They missed the mark. And the home fries were cold. But check it out. We recommend

If you’re visiting Newport RI, this is your place for excellent breakfast or lunch! The pancakes are absolutely delicious! Crispy bacon and flavorful coffee. The prices are good and the service is excellent, 100% recommend!

I went to The Hungry Monkey with my family for a late lunch and was happy to see many options for my family’s dietary restrictions. In addition the food was tasty when it came out and only took a short moment. I recommend the Salmón Bagel as the fish was really fresh and they allow you to make it yourself so you get all the best parts you enjoy.

It only takes one small thing to start your day off right ! Highly recommend this restaurant. Food is delicious, service friendly and attentive (thank you Becky) and prices reasonable. Get the chunky monkey pancakes!

Google
What a gem! This family-owned Portuguese breakfast spot in Newport, RI is a must-visit. The homemade corned beef was absolutely delicious—flavorful, tender, and clearly made with care. The owner went above and beyond with warm, attentive service that made us feel right at home. A truly special local find! 🇵🇹🍳

Google
The Hungry Monkey is a reliable brunch spot with good-sized portions. The food arrived quickly as it wasn't busy during my visit. However, I was confused by how bland the syrup for the pancakes was. I'm not sure if this is normal, but just a heads up.

Google
Was headed elsewhere for breakfast, but decided to stop here when we saw their menu outside. Really glad we did! Great stuffed french toast, and the corned beef hash was delicious. Food came out quickly and our server was very friendly. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Sunday with wife walking Newport. The hungry monkey plays 70's tunes, has a welcoming staff, and a great diner menu. Traditional Benedict was awesome (wife is picky). I tried the Redneck Bebe was a yummy and decadent gravy trip. (Easema from Emperors New Groove would not like but I loved it) Love these guys. Aelwesome food and vibe.

Yelp
Visiting Newport for a wedding and found this breakfast/brunch spot on the 67 bus line. A delicious breakfast and a nice vibe inside. Big menu, prompt service and seated quickly.

Yelp
Great breakfast spot. I ordered the breakfast sandwich on a bagel with bacon egg and cheese. It was so good. Totally hit the spot. Parking on the street in front. Small diner vibe. One restroom in back. Good service.

Yelp
We came here because it was close and it was well reviewed. We were impressed! The place has great breakfast! Eggs Benedict option galore The home fries were SUPER good! The service was super friendly The place was buzzing This is a winner winner Definitely worth a try!! The ambiance was casual so come as you are

Yelp
The food was delicious! I had the Greek omelet, turkey bacon, and the famous stuffed sweet French toast with bananas! Amazing! It's a must-have! The ambiance was family-oriented and nice, but the service could have been better!

Yelp
We are from out of state and came here for lunch. Staff were friendly and food came pretty quickly. The portions were huge. Casual vibe with large booths great for families.

Yelp
We've eaten here before and we continue to perform our, "is it as good as it used to be" test. They pass with flying colors. The ambiance screams "local, casual" and it's such a good feeling. The ability to walk in and sit right down reminds me of why we love Newport in the winter. As cool as all of that is, the food continues to be the star. The pancakes are arguably the most flavorful I've had. The hash is excellent! The special was a Churro Stuffed French toast. Oh man! So rich. Staff is friendly as always!

Yelp
An okay place to grab some brunch, especially if you don't want to wait a Corner Cafe amount of time! I got the Irish style eggs Benedict and blueberry stuffed French toast. The Benny was decent but the hollandaise wasn't as flavorful as others I've had and the poached eggs were a bit overcooked as the yolks weren't very runny. The blueberry stuffed French toast was just okay. The blueberries didn't have a great texture and just felt gummy and wrinkly.

Yelp
We've been here twice and the food is great, stuffed French toast and waffles, a delicious breakfast burrito, good coffee...thinking about it definitely makes me a hungry monkey! The service on the weekend is what's lacking- specifically the hostess.. We asked to put our name on the waitlist and knew it would be a 30 minute wait. We stood outside the whole time and noticed that the hostess started taking parties that showed up after us.. we asked her if she called our name (we knew she didn't because we stood there the whole time very attentively). She said she had but she couldn't even find us on her list... I know good help is hard to come by these days, but please train this gal on how to properly be a hostess or find a better system. We didn't get to experience the ambiance inside since we were given an open table outside that the server was clearly instructed to pick up in addition to her section- she wasn't too happy when she greeted us, but then was fine when she brought us our drinks. Luckily the food has been amazing both times we've been here and that outweighed the hostess having no idea what she was doing.

Yelp
I forgot to take a picture of the best thing on the menu which is the monkey bread to start off your breakfast. If you go it's an absolute must to share with on the table. We went on December 31st so it was a long wait and they made everyone stand outside. That wasn't my favorite thing on a chilly day and I would plan accordingly going back in the winter. The pancakes were good as was the bacon but the omelette wasn't anything special and definitely not worth the super long wait. This is a well known diner in Newport and the Monkey bread alone is worth the visit but be prepared for a wait on weekends.

Yelp
My initial review of this place was from almost seven years ago and it was an easy five stars! This is now my second and last ever time going here in the past month and I truly wish I could rate them lower. I ordered two spicy money burritos which is essentially a breakfast burrito and to my disappointment the burrito tastes like "Dawn" dish soap. The sad part is about two months ago I went here and got the same order and left because my burrito tasted like dish soap which I chopped up to a bad day for the cook. This is now the second time I have gotten this crappy food and I will not be back and will recommend against this establishment. If you do not believe me, order the burrito and taste for yourself. The cook is either truly incompetent or an ass. The service has depleted at this establishment where now it's like they do not even care to be nice. They expect their auto tip and do not care about anything. Get rid of the cook and stop making your burritos taste like damn soap as the first time was accepted but now the second time you are just rushing to leave for the day or your service is so damn bad no one wants to come here anymore. I will not take my service to the Corner Cafe.

Sabrina G.

Yelp
This place was okay. Service was good and food was just alright. Typical breakfast food.

Yelp
I have been contemplating taking a road trip up there just to come here. The food was so good that we ate there 3 mornings in a row.
google avatar

Jonathan M.

Yelp
Not sure why this place is not getting the live. Fast service good food. Why wait for the corner cafe line. Just sit and enjoy.
google avatar

Karl H.

Yelp
I love this place. Usually, never a wait, depending on the time you get there. They can fill up and pick up quickly. Usually, anytime before 8, you're good. The service is great. Servers are friendly and always have a smile. Especially mariana. Have to say she does it all. I had her both times I was there. Quick , to get you ordered and situated. Running orders making coffee. Topping off your coffee when needed. She remembers her customers from what I see. So when I went to pay I told her it was my last day there. Told her I would be back in Oct. Thank you for the service. She was kind to inform me that there is a food festival that is coming up before my next visit. Which is great seeing as I love good. So now I have looked into that and will have to make an extra trip before October, which is not an issue, seeing as I love the food in that area.

Yelp
This restaurant was the perfect distance away from downtown and wasn't jam packed with tourists. They have ample seating and customers are encouraged to sit wherever you like. They have a large breakfast and lunch menu, most meals are around $10 and the portions are generous. The wait staff were friendly and prompt. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant to others.
google avatar

Yelp
Our favorite breakfast spot in Newport. Good for big families. May have a wait but usually moves fast. Highly recommend their chocolate chip pancakes

I C.

Yelp
Not even going to lie, I only came here for breakfast because the corner cafe down the street was packed and I wasnt willing to wait but it honestly worked out for the best. The potatoes we well cooked and well seasoned and the breakfast burrito was delicious as well, even without the sausage. I even got to try out a grilled muffin. That whole meal plus the coffee coming out to about $20 made me a happy camper. Would definitely recommend.

Sam G.

Yelp
Food was delish! Wait was quick and so was the service! Cute cozy spot would definitely come again.

Yelp
I love to give a shout out to a restaurant that gives me something fun and a little different. So I'll shout out to the chef at the Hungry Monkey for putting some fun funk into the home fries, and fresh hash, both were welcomed and appreciated. If you're afraid of a little flavor and good stuff, then feel free to go elsewhere. Service was great. A good experience all around. . . . The 5th star is for the double handled (and double sided) monkey mug and whipped cream for the hot chocolate, always a winner for a kid of any age !
google avatar

Graham P.

Yelp
Solid spot for a cozy breakfast with a decent list of choices and some fun inventions. This is a classic diner style breakfast spot with the greasy spoon vibe
google avatar

Roseanne V.

Yelp
Came in around 10 am. There was about a 20 minute wait for a table but that was alright! Once seated we were overwhelmed with all the amazing options on the menu - definitely something here for everyone! All the food we had tasted so good and we left full and happy. What more can you ask for?

Yelp
I wanted to love this place but it completely fell short. In search of a Sunday breakfast spot we found the Hungry Monkey. I was excited to see a whole eggs Benedict section on the menu and figured we'd give it a try. We sat at the counter top and were served by a friendly waitress. The food took quite a while to make it out of the kitchen but I was hopeful it would be worth it. I got the Florentine Benedict. The eggs were over cooked and one was filled with hot water as a stuck my knife into it. This ultimately ruined everything else in my plate as it became filled with water. The potatoes were basically inedible. Covered with paprika and zero salt. They had no taste and were as hard as a rock. It looks like this spot struggles with consistency in their food and unfortunately it's not a gamble worth taking.

Yelp
AMAZING FOOD! It is BYOB so bring some champagne and get some orange juice to kill the hangover. The monkey bread is phenomenal and no matter what you order will cure your hangover and get you into the bars. The staff is friendly and quick. Very simple cafe with an "at home" feel and a "good to see you again" atmosphere

Yelp
Great breakfast place. Cold and rainy day. Got put on the list. Sat in the car and kept checking back. The service was friendly and the food was great. Wish the temp inside was a bit cozier, but just keep your jacket on, I guess. Love this place. It had just opened when we moved out of state, but always visit when we're in town to see friends. Love the pancakes, corn beef hash... loved their riff on it when they ran out of corned beef... "we're out of corned beef, but we do have chorizo hash...". YES, Please !! Awesome.
google avatar

Bryan S.

Yelp
Really good food, fun atmosphere. Sat at their bar, the staff were very friendly and attentive. Definitely left full! Ate there on two of the three weekends I was there.
google avatar

Yelp
Street parking / usually a line ( moves fast) BYOB if interested. Friendly and efficient staff. Good prices and tasty food. Clean and friendly atmosphere. One unisex clean bathroom. Defiantly a return visit

Yelp
I understand it's New Year's Day and am grateful someone cooks a breakfast for us. I really do... However, the wait time and unfortunately also the food was AWFUL, discouraging and disappointing. When we arrived to Hungry Monkey, one of the waitresses took our name and basically kick us out to wait 15-20 minutes outside. Lucky for us the weather was not bad for 1st of January and there is a cool antique store next door that allows to spare time by browsing around. After 20 minutes the waitress came outside and yell to the waiting crowd that whoever is ok with sitting on the bar seats, there are four open. We gave it a shot. We were able to place our order fairly quickly and after a while received a coffee and water, little did we know we're about to wait another HOUR for our eggs. I dared to ask about time frame of our order around 40 minutes since order but the waitress hasn't seem to be much concerned and she quickly floated to the kitchen and informed that our order is second next. During long wait time, we had a good chance to look around and not appreciate the look of the restaurant- kind of messy, didn't look like anyone cares of the atmosphere, behind the bar we had a view to a counter with several purses, jackets, Dunkin Donuts cups and lots of other mess. Doors to the kitchen were open with the view of this tired woman trying to hand wash all the dishes. There was also a phone ringing every so often without any employee being bothered by that. We waited another 15+ minutes to receive raw inedible potatoes and unseasoned omelette... The food just wasn't good, not worth to wait over an hour and absolutely not worth the price. For these reasons, I don't recommend and won't come back.

Yelp
Visiting from New Hampshire and saw positive reviews on Yelp. Service was great. The food was really good. Loved the Bolo bread for my breakfast sandwich. Will be back when we visit Newport again.

Michelle L.

Yelp
Great service, nice atmosphere and good food. Lots of specials and they offer bolos which I love. Had a really good breakfast sandwich.

Yelp
Delicious - everything was cool perfectly with the right seasoning and flavors. The pancakes were moist. The atmosphere was fun and welcoming. Service was great. Hidden Breaksfast gem of Rhode Island!

Yelp
Had breakfast with my family whilst visiting the area. Very good food and quick friendly service. Prices were reasonable too.

Mary R.

Yelp
Mother's clam chowder was amazing and the homemade turkey sandwich and fries were delicious... Hope Jim enjoys his birthday Monday- (and many more) Hungry should be a must stop- wish I had time for breakfast tomorrow!

Carolyn G.

Yelp
Bring your appetite, plenty of food. More than even our teenage, hollow-legged son could finish! Friendly service, even on a busy holiday! Very relaxed atmosphere! Marking down one star because a little too much salt on the eggs. Otherwise, great experience!

Yelp
Went here on Father's Day & I was very pleased. The service was excellent.. our server, Jen, who also is the GM, was so busy but still made sure she was giving each patron adequate time for great service.. I had the short stack of blueberry pancakes, which where were loaded with berries.. yummy.. my father had the churro French toast and I swear it was devoured within a few mins.. my mom also enjoyed her pancakes, she mentioned how delicious they were. And the rest of the family had various versions of the several omelette choices.. now that the crew from Bishop's Diner is working & cooking here, the food & customer service has gone up 100%. It's worth the try...

Yelp
The hungry money was loosing its strengths! I been here a few years back, I'm was supper excited to come here and try some of their good old menu items. I wasn't happy with their steak and eggs. I think their choice of cuts could be better! However I was still overall happy, walking out full! Their portions were good large sizes fitting their name. The staff was really nice and friendly and the breakfast/brunch menu was still good. We'll priced as usual. The locals will alway come here for a nice sunday breakfast. The vibes shouts let's eat! Their wall posters and photos could do a face lift which it needed to beat some competitors from their ball park! Will comeback again!

Yelp
An one of a kind breakfast dinner. The food is fresh and the staff is amazing! They serve breakfast all day... and you can't go wrong with the Gorilla!!!

Yelp
Adorable concept and storefront. Their mascot monkey has been all over the world with pictures to prove it. A gem of a small business In Newport next to the police station, their breakfast game is strong. My friend ordered the Portuguese omelette and Belgian waffle, her boyfriend ordered an omelette as well and I had the two eggs with bacon and homefries. All our sets came with toast of our choice. The bacon was crispy the way I like it and the homefries were thick and flavorful. My friends omelette had chourizo which added a nice salty touch to the dish. The owner himself comes around refilling coffee and making conversation, we felt very welcomEd and taken care of.

Karen R.

Yelp
Good kids options. All the portions are enormous - I'm not complaining! Veggie omelet was satisfying and pleasantly unique with broccoli in it. Stuffed French toast: he said, "I'm glad I didn't order a triple!" Delicious and generous portion. The single pancake with the kids meal was a micky mouse shape and would have covered my five year old's torso it was so big. She ate the egg and one micky ear .
google avatar

Allison T.

Yelp
Service is really slow but the food is good and prices are fair. The potatoes are great and the burrito was delicious. I would skip the pancakes those were very eh.
google avatar

Charlotte M.

Yelp
This place is AWESOME. Googled where to go for breakfast and this place did NOT show up. So grateful that the place on the other corner had a line to get in. This place has the yummiest stuffed French toasts. And the blueberry pancakes are amazing with fresh blueberries and powdered sugar. Want just a little something have a muffin grilled with a smidgen of butter. Service? Holy cow, they all work together. You can see the genuine smiles. They help each other and make sure the guests are taken care of. Please do yourself a favor, GO here for breakfast or lunch! The food was so yummy that we ate it all before I remembered to take pictures.

Christine S.

Yelp
Can't speak for everyone's experience here. But my experience left me with a bad taste in my mouth, not from the food either. The service is less favorable particularly while dining while Black.

Sonia L.

Yelp
Came here as a second choice. We should have stuck with our first choice but the other place was too long of a wait. Had the French toast which was just ok. Bacon was burnt. My husband had eggs and pancakes with home fries. His pancakes n home fries were very good. The waitress never paid attention to us. There were people behind us while waiting for a table that were served before us n left before us. She should be reprimanded for her service since we waited so long for even just getting a menu to getting our food n check. I wouldn't come back again.

Mary P.

Yelp
Food was plentiful atmosphere casual, service was a little slow, but the restaurant was bustling. we had sweet french toast stuffed with whipped cream cheese and blueberries and scrambled eggs , toast , bacon and corned beef hash.

Louise N.

Yelp
The food was yummy! We arrived at about noon on a recent Friday for brunch and the food did not disappoint. Deducting one star for the disorganized service. We stood at the door forever, waiting to just be acknowledged. People piled up in line behind us and still, we were just ignored. Finally, when they were ready to seat us, they tried to put the two of us at a table that would have easily sat the party of 6 behind us in line. We volunteered to go to a smaller available table and the waitress short-circuited for a minute. Having said all of that, we would return, as the food was really good. I think they just need to get themselves a little organized.

Katherine R.

Yelp
I just went to the hungry monkey again and had to write another fantastic review! My steak and eggs were cooked to perfection and seasoned amazingly! Friendly staff that always greet me with the biggest smile! I really love going to that place! It's my favorite home away from home! They always brew me a fresh pot of decaf and make me feel so welcome! I'll be seeing you all again soon!

Yelp
Breakfast on a Sat am ....waited about 20 min to get seated. Seen some open table and wondered why the wait. Seems like they may have been understaffed ? Took awhile to get our order taken. 3 of us got our breakfast while one order was never made. Disaster. Grilled English tasted like it was oiled and not buttered ! No jellies on table. And had to wait 5 min to get some. One of us got the wrong bread for toast. ... Food was ok , corned beef hash was very good. Maybe just a bad day ? I've been told this was the place to get a great breakfast. With all the competition for breakfast ,we won't be back. The place could also use a good cleaning.

Kendall J.

Yelp
Cute little diner atmosphere. I got the "Spider Monkey" and it was delicious! Service was quick as well.

Yelp
We were spending the day in Newport and stopped in this lovely little establishment for a quick bite to begin our day. We arrived around 1:30 and they are open daily until 2 pm . We were greeted by the owner who told us we could sit anywhere we liked. The menu consists of breakfast and lunch items, and there's also a huge blackboard on the wall with daily specials. My sister ordered a Reuben sandwich and I just opted for a grilled cheese because I was not hungry yet. Both were great, as was the service and their prices. If you're looking for great food in Newport that won't break the bank, you will not be disappointed!
