The Imperial

"An oasis of calm, this colonial low-rise near Connaught Place is one of the city's best bets for location, charm, and style. Rooms with high ceilings have Burmese teak and rosewood furnishings - and the on-site dining can't be beat. Editor's Pick: Gold List 2018"

"New Delhi’s original power hotel, The Imperial opened in 1936 and played host to celebrities and historic figures: It was here, rather than at Connaught Place that Pandit Nehru, Mahatama Gandhi, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and Lord Mountbatten met to discuss the partition of India and creation of Pakistan. Though renovation has lent a bit of a corporate vibe to the high-ceilinged hallways, the hotel still oozes nostalgia at every turn. A vast museum-worthy collection on display throughout public and private spaces includes life-size oil portraits of princely rulers, statuary, tapestries, old photographs, and British and Indian military and polo regalia. Rooms come in Victorian, Indian heritage, and Art Deco motifs, with marble floors, sumptuous velvet furnishings, and antique rugs. The centerpiece of the palm-studded lawn is a huge, beautifully tiled swimming pool where red-uniformed staff deliver ice-cold drinks to sunbathers in the stultifying heat, but if you prefer a moodier venue for your cocktails, the property has a library-like bar with wood-panelled walls as well as four atmospheric restaurants serving every kind of cuisine. And don’t miss the afternoon tea, enjoyed in the light-filled atrium."

"What India lacks in cutting-edge boutique hotels it more than makes up for in classic old-world luxury hotels. And really, what else would you expect from a hotel called the Imperial? This place is generally regarded as New Delhi’s most elegant grand hotel, and it’s certainly got the pedigree; it was built in the Thirties by an associate of Sir Edward Lutyens, the man responsible for so much of the city’s classical architecture." - Tablet Hotels

Imperial New Delhi Hotel | Best places to stay in Delhi

"No other luxury property in Delhi offers such an alluring combination of style and history. Built in the 1930s, the Imperial blends Victoriana, colonial and art deco elements. Its architect was among a group, headed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, charged with shaping the look of New Delhi, the Raj’s impressive new capital. Supremely elegant and notably classy, the fact that Mountbatten, Nehru and Jinnah – all pivotal in the subcontinent’s path to independence – met here simply adds to its appeal and ambience. Displays of collectible artwork, turbaned staff, charming gardens and an enviable central location near Connaught Place make it one of a kind. " - Amar Grover

The best heritage luxury hotel I stayed so far that does not pinch pocket. Impeccable, beautiful old world charm & yet homely with superb service. Breakfast buffet is excellent in Indian, Continental & Pan Asian. Great bakery, cold cuts & cheese spread. Gives other top 5 stars a run for the money. Highly recommended.

Stepping into The Imperial New Delhi is like walking into a beautifully preserved chapter of history. Established in 1936, this iconic hotel exudes old-world charm and colonial grandeur. The architecture, vintage photographs, and the elegant 1911 Restaurant take you straight back to the era of the British Raj. Every corner whispers of the past, yet the service and comfort are world-class and timeless. If you're seeking a stay that combines luxury with a rich sense of heritage, The Imperial is unmatched. The royal ambiance, attentive staff, and stunning interiors make it more than just a hotel it’s an experience. Truly one of the finest reminders of the bygone imperial era in Delhi

After my family and I had being almost one year as guests at the Imperial, I can say that very few places can do the magic The Imperial does: it offered us excellence, sophistication, charm, refinement, elegance, uniqueness and the highest level of professionalism in a perfect and unforgettable family atmosphere. I've never felt staying or - at the end of the day - going to "a hotel", but I always had the feeling of staying and going to "The Imperial", "to home". Every time we were greeted "Welcome Home" at the driveway, at the reception, at the concierge, at the restaurants, in the corridors, at the gym, at the spa, at the swimming pool, everywhere, we really felt at home. The smiles and looks were always candid, spontaneous. At The Imperial, everything comes from the heart. That is the magic there. I have never seen this in other places and, modestly, I have travelled a lot. ||This magic did not happen once in a while, such as in the arrival or in certain events. No, at The Imperial, I have witnessed that magic 24/7, every day, at every encounter with the lovely people who work there, for almost one year, consistently. They strive to make your stay special, exceptional and unforgettable. Consistency, a careful and professional one, is not for everyone. At The Imperial, I felt that there is a soul, a bright one. Hotels in Delhi, unfortunately, lost theirs for a number of reasons. That is not the case of The Imperial. ||I am extremely grateful - and this come from my heart as well - for the many incomparable and unforgettable experiences, memories and bonds that all of you at The Imperial gave me. We will always come back. Actually, we feel we never left.

This place is a gem in the heart of New Delhi. Opulence, artistry, royalty with world class service and variety of cuisine. We stayed in the Grand Room Heritage. Very big room with room to relax and unwind. This hotel experience was beyond my expectations. Great service by Shubhangi, Damini and team. Food was always cooked to perfection. Their restaurant manager- Bharat made sure that we had the best food experience. I don’t like chilli, so the food at 1911 restaurant is really hot. Something they need to change and cater for their audience. But Bharat made special curry for us without chilies. Gym, pool are great. Spa experience is magical. A must visit.

The Imperial greets you warmly with the most fantastic service. We were upgraded to a wonderful Grand Heritage room which was absolutely gorgeous with a large seating area / shower and bath. The water takes a few minutes to run hot but that’s maybe the price of heritage service. The breakfast was delicious with brilliant service but the breakfast buffet is a bit sad - this is easily cured by asking them to cook what you want fresh so you don’t have lukewarm roti etc. wonderful fruits / juices etc with a brilliant live omelette stand and I’d highly recommend the Marsala omelette. They have a live station for dosas etc outside but unless you ask they don’t tell you - which means you could end up with the second rate buffet. They perhaps should consider a card on the tables to tell you what’s available.|They gave me a gorgeous cake and bunch of flowers for my birthday which was so kind as well!!|The pool and gym are lovely and have fantastic service like everywhere else but the bars. I think that The Imperial lets itself down by understaffing the bars. We left one after sitting for more than five minutes waiting for an order to be taken - but a manager spotted this, relocated us and made us drinks himself showing that it’s simply an understaffing issue. This was a continuing theme - including a choice by a barman to serve a loud crowd of men before us although our order had been taken first.|I can’t wait to return to The Imperial. Honestly, the issues above are wrinkles. It is absolutely one of the best hotels that I have ever stayed in with all the staff apart from the overworked bar people charming from start to finish.|Tip: try and bag the marble table in the 1911 Restaurant where Nehru, Gandhi and Jinna discussed partition.|Thank you!

Absolutely Outstanding Stay! I had an incredible experience at this hotel from start to finish. The staff was extremely professional, friendly, and attentive to every detail. The room was spacious, spotless, and beautifully decorated, with a stunning view of the city. The amenities were top-notch — from the luxurious spa and rooftop pool to the delicious breakfast buffet and elegant restaurant dining. Room service was prompt, and the concierge went above and beyond to help with local recommendations. This hotel truly delivers a 5-star experience. I highly recommend it for both leisure and business travelers. Can’t wait to return!

I spent a few elegant hours at The Imperial during a ring ceremony and was truly impressed by its timeless glamour and graceful revival. The recent refurbishment has artfully updated the hotel—new technology, refreshed terraces without compromising its rich colonial heritage and grandeur. From its iconic Art Deco façade and art-filled corridors to the impeccably restored interiors, everything exudes old-world luxury with modern finesse. Even in that brief visit, the ambiance felt rich and welcoming.

I visit India once a year for both business and leisure, and I usually stay at various super luxury hotels. However, this time, my usual hotel was fully booked, so I ended up at The Imperial. It was the best decision ever! I will never return to my previous hotels. The service, rooms, food, and internet here are all exceptional. The staff is remarkably efficient.I highly recommend this place! P.S. The hotel lounge serves better French onion soup than you can find in France!😆
