"Cool hostel & suites, described as "not quite a hotel". In their own words: "we have no room service; there is no mini-bar; our rooms have no (operating) phones; you'll find no pool, spa nor gym in the premises; we don't provide valet parking." That's it! We'll say it's only greater because of that." - Musa WorkLab
"When it launched in 2011, the Independente Hostel & Suites epitomized the splashy haute boarding house movement that swept across Europe in the last two decades; this grown-up successor is situated just next door. Instead of towering triple bunk beds and communal baths, expect 18 large private rooms with en-suite lavatories (think luxe rain showerheads and walk-in glass stalls). But it hasn’t entirely lost the bohemian spirit of the original: rooms are adorned with old maps, vintage writing desks, and funky artwork. On the rooftop terrace, Insólito offers inspired Portuguese dishes—salt-cod confit with green apple, for instance—matched with sweeping views of the River Tagus. Another plus: the property’s privileged location opposite the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint, just a few minutes’ walk from Rossio Square."
"The Independente, Bairro Alto. Cool hostel & suites, described as "not quite a hotel". In their own words: "we have no room service; there is no mini-bar; our rooms have no (operating) phones; you'll find no pool, spa nor gym in the premises; we don't provide valet parking." That's it! We'll say it's only greater because of that."
How Hostels Are Going Socially Distant While Keeping Their DNA
"When Portugal’s two most popular hostel hybrids, The Independente Hostel & Suites in Lisbon and The House of Sandeman in Porto, reopen in July, their dorm rooms will be capped at 60 percent capacity."
Staff at the front desk and the kitchen were very friendly and very competent. The common areas are nice and the facility is clean.
It's very loud at night on the street and sometimes within the other dorms too. After 11 or midnight, staff should request quiet hours and ask people loudly socializing in the rooms to keep it down.
Curtains are a must at hostels but this hostel does not have any. I highly recommend it for privacy and also to keep bright lights out. Overall okay but would not stay here again.

Enjoying my stay here. the place is very clean and the people have been friendly. Lourdes in the breakfast room was a highlight and brightened our mornings!!there is only one remote for the ac in the whole place so we weren't able to control it over night which led to a very hot room. other than that this place has been fantastic for a quick stay in Lisbon. very good location, its close to everything.

The hotel was not ready for guests and should have been closed for renovations before offering services. There are many things that need improvement (I stayed in the suite room type at the next building to the lobby building).| 1. The elevator was broken since the day I arrived. I stayed for 4 nights, and it was still not fixed even when I checked out.| 2. The room was not ready — the sink was cracked, and there were marks on the bathroom tiles as shown in the attached photo.| 3. The hotel itself is quite old, but that’s understandable given its vintage style.| 4. Breakfast terms were not clearly stated during booking — each guest is limited to one serving of eggs and one specialty coffee (such as latte or cappuccino).| 5. Considering the price and the quality, I recommend comparing with other options, as you might find better choices elsewhere.| 6. The rooftop restaurant was closed for renovation, so we couldn’t access it during our stay.||Pros:| 1. Good location right by the viewpoint.| 2. Unique experience staying in a Portuguese-style room.

Really, really nice hostel! Such friendly staff, big thanks to Sara, Gabriela and the older woman at the breakfast! Such nice people around working here, which made the vibe even more better! Happy hour every day from 4-7pm, so that means cheap beer and wine
The only "negative" aspect: the quality of the wifi could be a little better in the bedrooms, but that was just a small thing! I'll definitely come back the next time :)) THANK U SO SO MUCH

Booked a small double room for one night. The reception is welcoming. The building itself is very old. Small double room is located next to the main building. The room is comfy but the floor needs updating. The shower floor felt flimsy and will be breaking soon. The breakfast buffet is included with a small spread. There was a menu provided to order fresh omelette, scrambled eggs, pancakes and coffee. Ear plugs were provided on the bedside table but we didn't need it in the end. There's a view point right in front of the hotel. Shared kitchen and guest lounge available in the main building. Overall I am happy with this hotel for the price of £45 per night. If I'm staying for longer, I would probably go with a newer hotel though.

Good place to stay if you are a budget traveller. The location was good and pretty close to the main spots. There are lots of eating options around the area. Maybe they can work out with a cleaning more frequently so we don't end up getting flies around the room. Overall, it was a good place to crash on.

wifi was iffy and no privacy curtains on beds. definitely bring ear plugs since the neighborhood has a lot of night life. other than that, the all-female room felt very safe, bathrooms were clean, staff were friendly. i would stay again

Our favourite hotel in the city. Easy bus or walk and a fabulous view to Lisbon. Remember to wake up early for the sunrise, it is stunning! It is quite noisy at night
