On the Grid : The Independente

"Cool hostel & suites, described as "not quite a hotel". In their own words: "we have no room service; there is no mini-bar; our rooms have no (operating) phones; you'll find no pool, spa nor gym in the premises; we don't provide valet parking." That's it! We'll say it's only greater because of that." - Musa WorkLab

"When it launched in 2011, the Independente Hostel & Suites epitomized the splashy haute boarding house movement that swept across Europe in the last two decades; this grown-up successor is situated just next door. Instead of towering triple bunk beds and communal baths, expect 18 large private rooms with en-suite lavatories (think luxe rain showerheads and walk-in glass stalls). But it hasn’t entirely lost the bohemian spirit of the original: rooms are adorned with old maps, vintage writing desks, and funky artwork. On the rooftop terrace, Insólito offers inspired Portuguese dishes—salt-cod confit with green apple, for instance—matched with sweeping views of the River Tagus. Another plus: the property’s privileged location opposite the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint, just a few minutes’ walk from Rossio Square."

How Hostels Are Going Socially Distant While Keeping Their DNA

"When Portugal’s two most popular hostel hybrids, The Independente Hostel & Suites in Lisbon and The House of Sandeman in Porto, reopen in July, their dorm rooms will be capped at 60 percent capacity."

First stay in solo hostel and was very pleased. Booked 6 person room and 3 were in there max at any time. Beds and room were very clean and enough room to store bags and shoes etc. Lock needed if want to secure things in cupboard. Building itself if beautiful. Lovely breakfast provided with friendly staff all over. Stored bags there in the first and last day with ease. Bathroom had everything needed and was also very clean. Communal area was comfortable for some down time with a bit more room. Area to lounge around or work if needed. Great location a short walk away from most attractions Overall great stay with no complaints!

Great place to stay! The hotel (separate from the hostel) is well-located if you enjoy a good nightlife, which is only a minute or two away. It's located across the street from a nice park with a beautiful viewpoint (nice place to watch the sunrise over castle walls!) and there was a cute market while we were there. Our room was a couple of floors up from street level and it was quiet allowing us to get a good night's sleep but earplugs were provided just in case. The bathroom was basic but neat, bring your own hairdryer as I didn't see one in the room. The included breakfast provided variety and was nice to enjoy in a quiet courtyard setting. The hotel is a 10 minute walk to the metro (with luggage!) and easily accessible by bus, Uber, etc. The front desk staff were kind and helpful with our questions. If there had been availability during the rest of our stay in Lisbon, we would have booked to stay here again!

This hotel is in a great location, rooms are clean, the breakfast good and the rooftop bar is fun. The positive greeting in the morning for breakfast. by “mama” was uplifting! | It occupies two buildings that are old palaces, one for the hostel and another for the private rooms. Our party occupied 4 rooms over4 nights in the hotel section. All rooms are small, cramped and configured differently with no luggage rack and only a few hangars in each closet. Some rooms had a shelf In the closet for clothes or a suitcase, others didn’t. Hallway lighting is on a motion sensor that sometimes failed to come on in a timely manner. Some rooms had only intermittent WiFi and at times, even 5G wouldn’t come in.| Due to the location, the hotel is noisy on all sides- from the street, the alley, the restaurant and the stairs leading to and from the rooftop bar. The only amenity offered in all the rooms were earplugs! There was soap at the sink and a combination body wash-hair shampoo in the showers. | Unfortunately, the rooms themselves are in disrepair. Due to maintenance issues , we stayed in 2 different rooms, a “suite” and a small room. In one room, the AC unit stopped working and the sinks were slow to drain. (There were other slow draining sinks among our group.) In the other room the tiny safe wouldn’t work and the showers leaked onto the bathroom floor. Based on the water stains in the bathroom and into the rooms, this is a common problem throughout the hotel. ( Ask for extra towels!) For repairs, we were told one thing by the front desk folks and another from management. Lots of stories and promises by the front desk, but no fixes of maintenance issues and no apologies for inconveniences. | The front desk folks tried to work with us, but management blamed the AC room issues on us and did not compensate us for needing to move into a smaller room 3 of the 4 nights we were there. Management isn’t on site, and was unavailable to talk with us in person. We were asked to send an email and got a curt response back. | Due to maintenance issues, lack of consistent internet service, noise at night and lack of customer service, we do not recommend this hotel. | The hotel bills itself as “Bohemian” and we would agree!

The view from the park across the street is the best part of this location. “Mama” provides a warm and inviting greeting for breakfast in the morning. Front desk staff seemed put out every time and there were a number of problems. Hallway lighting was non existent at times. No shampoo or lotion or tissues or shelves in shower to put own. WiFi was nonexistent or intermittent in each of the 3 different rooms we had. They supply earplugs in every room which is indicative of the noise levels coming from the street, the alley, the on-property restaurant and rooftop bar. Noise from rooftop bar patrons coming down stairs until 2am made sleep difficult. AC quit working second of 5 nights and they moved us to “a smaller room” where the AC worked, but never an apology or “sorry you have to change rooms” or any compensation offered. Asked for compensation for moving to what staff described as “a smaller room” and manager blamed us for breaking the AC and occupying 2 rooms while they tried and failed to fix the AC. We stayed at 4 other hotels in a variety of locations during 2 weeks in Portugal and all were so much better than this hotel.

Beautiful place, and beautiful views, clean and tidy. I was in a shared dorm and was three bunk beds high :/, room was cool with Aircon. Nice shared Kitchen, but oven was broken and even though my food was labelled someone took it:/. But overall a beautiful place, I don't know why everyone is complaining about it being up a hill though, as in Portugal it can't be avoided.

We stayed at Independente Príncipe Real and I loved it. It’s not a luxury hotel, but an authentic, charming, antique property in a great location. The staff were very responsive, and while the breakfast didn’t have much variety, everything was light and high quality.

Staff at the front desk and the kitchen were very friendly and very competent. The common areas are nice and the facility is clean. It's very loud at night on the street and sometimes within the other dorms too. After 11 or midnight, staff should request quiet hours and ask people loudly socializing in the rooms to keep it down. Curtains are a must at hostels but this hostel does not have any. I highly recommend it for privacy and also to keep bright lights out. Overall okay but would not stay here again.

Idk who they are paying to give them positive reviews because there's no way I stayed in the same building. There's legit black mould telling you where the water pipes are behind the walls. I get that it's a hostel, but there's a limit to which you can curb your expectations for basic stuff such as cleanliness and safety. At least, the included breakfast was ok and its staff much better than the front desk's.
