"When it launched in 2011, the Independente Hostel & Suites epitomized the splashy haute boarding house movement that swept across Europe in the last two decades; this grown-up successor is situated just next door. Prime Location The location is arguably the best in the city. Situated right in the heart of Príncipe Real, you are steps away from chic boutiques, lush gardens, and some of Lisbon’s most iconic viewpoints (miradouros). It’s central enough to be convenient, yet tucked away from the frantic tourist crowds of the lower districts. The Breakfast & Service The standout feature of this stay has to be the staff. From check-in to check-out, the service is warm, attentive, and genuinely helpful. • The Breakfast Buffet: This isn't your standard continental spread. The variety is impressive, the ingredients are fresh, and the setting provides a wonderful start to a day of exploring. It’s easily one of the highlights of the booking. The Room Experience While the rooms lean toward the outdated side in terms of decor and furniture, they possess a vintage charm that fits the historic building. The Value Factor Despite the older aesthetic, the amenities are surprisingly complete. For the price point, you get everything you need for a comfortable stay—the essentials are well-covered, proving you don't need a modern remodel to feel right at home.

First stay in solo hostel and was very pleased. Booked 6 person room and 3 were in there max at any time. Beds and room were very clean and enough room to store bags and shoes etc. Lock needed if want to secure things in cupboard. Building itself if beautiful. Lovely breakfast provided with friendly staff all over. Stored bags there in the first and last day with ease. Bathroom had everything needed and was also very clean. Communal area was comfortable for some down time with a bit more room. Area to lounge around or work if needed. Great location a short walk away from most attractions Overall great stay with no complaints!

Beautiful place, and beautiful views, clean and tidy. I was in a shared dorm and was three bunk beds high :/, room was cool with Aircon. Nice shared Kitchen, but oven was broken and even though my food was labelled someone took it:/. But overall a beautiful place, I don't know why everyone is complaining about it being up a hill though, as in Portugal it can't be avoided.

Nice place to stay in a good area. The staff were friendly and helpful from the start. Arrival was after midnight, and the receptionist welcomed guests and showed everything around. The elevator was broken, so the stairs were necessary. It was a bit tiring, but not a big issue. The room was clean and comfortable. Earplugs were available because of a nearby bar mentioned in other reviews, but there were no noise problems during the stay. Breakfast was simple but tasty, and eggs were available on request. Overall, the stay felt worth the money.

There is absolutely no privacy in the bathrooms. The bathrooms and toilets are very dirty. Only 3 bathrooms and 3 toilets are allocated for men in all the rooms on the 1st floor. WiFi does not work. The French balcony door inside the room does not close completely, so there is no sound or heat insulation. It is very wrong to have a common area right next to a room where people sleep. Although there is a kitchen, almost nothing usable is there or broken. The 3-tier bunk bed system is very bad. There should be an age limit in the dorms; it is not right for a 20-year-old to stay with a 55-year-old. The building may be old, but it's very neglected. The doorknob came off in our hands.

Great place to stay! The hotel (separate from the hostel) is well-located if you enjoy a good nightlife, which is only a minute or two away. It's located across the street from a nice park with a beautiful viewpoint (nice place to watch the sunrise over castle walls!) and there was a cute market while we were there. Our room was a couple of floors up from street level and it was quiet allowing us to get a good night's sleep but earplugs were provided just in case. The bathroom was basic but neat, bring your own hairdryer as I didn't see one in the room. The included breakfast provided variety and was nice to enjoy in a quiet courtyard setting. The hotel is a 10 minute walk to the metro (with luggage!) and easily accessible by bus, Uber, etc. The front desk staff were kind and helpful with our questions. If there had been availability during the rest of our stay in Lisbon, we would have booked to stay here again!

The view from the park across the street is the best part of this location. “Mama” provides a warm and inviting greeting for breakfast in the morning. Front desk staff seemed put out every time and there were a number of problems. Hallway lighting was non existent at times. No shampoo or lotion or tissues or shelves in shower to put own. WiFi was nonexistent or intermittent in each of the 3 different rooms we had. They supply earplugs in every room which is indicative of the noise levels coming from the street, the alley, the on-property restaurant and rooftop bar. Noise from rooftop bar patrons coming down stairs until 2am made sleep difficult. AC quit working second of 5 nights and they moved us to “a smaller room” where the AC worked, but never an apology or “sorry you have to change rooms” or any compensation offered. Asked for compensation for moving to what staff described as “a smaller room” and manager blamed us for breaking the AC and occupying 2 rooms while they tried and failed to fix the AC. We stayed at 4 other hotels in a variety of locations during 2 weeks in Portugal and all were so much better than this hotel.

I honestly never thought I’d have to write such a negative review, but our experience at Independente Principe Real was absolutely unacceptable.|We booked five rooms many months in advance, expecting a pleasant stay, but unfortunately what we encountered was a series of serious problems and complete indifference from the management.|Our top-floor room had no working air conditioning—in August—and the heat was unbearable. The staff admitted the problem but offered only a tiny, cramped replacement room for one night and no real solution afterward.|We were told that the “real manager” would contact us after our departure to discuss a refund for the inconvenience.|Despite promises of a refund, two months later we’ve received no response to our multiple messages. |Our experience was so stressful and uncomfortable that we wouldn’t wish it on anyone. The total absence of customer care and accountability speaks volumes.|If you value comfort, honesty, and basic respect for guests, I strongly suggest you look elsewhere.
