How to Spend a Fall Weekend on the North Shore of Massachusetts | Vogue

"The best place to stay is at The Inn at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate. Located in the coastal town of Ipswich, the Inn sits on a corner of the 2,100-acre property known as The Crane Estate. Once the original farmhouse on the property, the inn was converted into a 10-room bed and breakfast in 2000 and renovated in 2014. The vibe exudes Massachusetts charm, with each room decorated in a unique design scheme—ours was a study in that New England classic: toile. Direct access to one of the loveliest beaches in the area, Crane Beach, is included in your stay, as is a hearty breakfast each morning. Before making the trip to the Inn, we stocked up on charcuterie and cheese from Cambridge’s superlative Formaggio Kitchen), and spent evenings on-site sipping wine, noshing on pâté, and playing Scrabble—the makings of a small town idyll." - Leah Bhabha

My wife and I just returned from another stay at the Inn at Castle Hill. This has become an annual trip and one of our favorite spots in the world. The location, views, rooms and staff at Castle Hill are superb. Breakfast is a delight every morning, before you explore the beauty of Cape Ann or relax on Crane Beach. There are many convenient amenities. This is a truly peaceful place.

I had an absolutely AMAZING experience at the Inn at Castle Hill! The rooms are so thoughtfully decorated with stunning views. I was in the Teller room, one of the smaller ones on the third floor, and it was so cozy and comfortable! The bathrooms are on the smaller side, but still very manageable, and the whole place is air conditioned during the Summer. The breakfast is amazing and you get a whole bunch of different options, on top of lemonade, iced tea, and cookies served throughout the day. The real special times are before and after the estate opens for the day, because you really feel like you have the place to yourself. I walked up to the mansion for sunset, and it was stunning! They can also help get you booked on guided house or kayak tours, and you get free access to Crane Beach with towels and tote bags! If you’re looking for a peaceful coastal getaway, this is the place!

Truly cannot say enough wonderful things about this place. I’m a bit of a B&B snob & this is actually a top tier experience start to finish. Gorgeous house, curated rooms, breakfast was incredible & the attention to detail, amazing. We are already talking about how we can come back next summer! You CANNOT beat this location. Walking distance from the great house (book a tour, BOOK A TOUR) and tons of beautiful walking trails. Crane beach is a short 1 min drive & it’s stunning. We cannot get over our experience, well done!

Crane Beach, Crane Estate, both amazing places to visit, and how awesome is it that you can stay right on property? The Inn at Castle Hill is a cozy, inviting place with comfy rooms, good breakfast, and friendly staff. I brought my wife here for her birthday weekend and we had such a special time. We added on a sunset river kayak tour that was really magical. Your stay at the inn includes complimentary beach parking or you can take a 1/2 mile trail walk if you don’t have much to carry in. No need to worry about reserving a coveted beach pass in addition to booking your room. Also, being a member of The Trustees will give you a decent discount on the room and extra activities like the kayaking, house tour, etc. I definitely recommend this place. Given all the amenities and beautiful, quiet location it is definitely worth the price.

Just finished a two day stay and it was fantastic from start to finish. Gorgeous rooms and main floor with a front porch that looks out over the salt marshes. Staff couldn't be nicer and more helpful. Location amazing on Crane Estate (2100 acres) with easy access to Crane's beach. Took the house tour of Crane Mansion which was very interesting. Can't recommend the Inn at Castle Hill enough and can't wait to return.

Beautiful, cozy, friendly, peaceful and historic; I didn’t want to leave! There’s access to expansive Crane Beach with the softest sand, big dunes and lovely ocean as well as the grand estate with period furnishings, formal gardens, and fabulous out-buildings - so much to see and do. |The breakfast is delicious and sitting on the porch, lawn, or living rooms is perfectly relaxing.

I loved my stay. I needed time out and foolishly booked for only one night, definitely two the next visit. My room, Mine, was fabulous and the innkeeper was kind enough to give me the history of the name when I asked. I’d booked for a beach concert the first night that was canceled by a wonderful thunderstorm, so I sat in a cozy nook downstairs and read while consuming an excellent cheeseboard. Breakfast the next morning was delicious, some reviewers have called the food ‘home-cooked’ - in my experience home cooks are a bit iffy, if they cook at all, this meal was sensational. I woke early the second morning and went for a walk on Crane beach, but the highlight was coming back and witnessing thousands of swallows on electricity lines, in reeds, and on the road, all preparing for migration. I stopped in awe of miraculous nature. I’m only sad that they are full for Columbus Day :( my bad.

What a delightful stay we had at the Inn at Castle Hill. The peace and serenity just oozed from this ‘now’ special place for us. The staff was exceptional from Camilla to Kathryn to Julia and the ‘chef’ in the kitchen. The breakfast was delicious. Housekeeping did a fantastic job making sure we were well taken care of. Sunrise was spectacular from our window seat in the Florence Room. Thx Camilla for the recommendation! No TV’s No Children is a gift. The grounds are gorgeous and the the Crane Estate and Beach are a bonus. I’m so glad I found this gem and will definitely come back for our anniversary next year.
