My partner and I were in Baltimore for an overnight (Sunday into Monday) and this boutique hotel had come highly recommended to us.
When we arrived, we were immediately pleased with the hotel and its location - in addition to being on the water, the hotel is right around the corner from a ton of trendy restaurants and local shops. It's also only about a mile from the busy and beautiful Inner Harbor, which we were able to walk to in no time.
The hotel itself is lovely. It has an old-fashioned charm with all the amenities you could possibly want or need. Our room was much larger than expected, with windows that looked out onto to the water and, most importantly, it was spotless. From start to finish, the hotel employees were excellent - polite, professional, etc.
There were, however, a few things that struck us.
First - we were told parking was valet and there would be a wine reception at check-in (5 p.m.). Turns out parking isn't valet; instead, you park in a (very) nearby lot. And the wine reception? It's only Monday through Saturday. Neither of these were a problem - parking was easy and super-secure. Also, it's included in the room rate, which is a great value in that part of the city. And while we would've loved complimentary wine, there were plenty of fabulous restaurants to more than makeup for the miscommunication.
Next? Check-in isn't until 4 p.m., but we were told the hotel would hold on to our bags and call when the room was ready. They accepted our luggage and tagged everything accordingly, but we never did receive the call regarding our room. To err on the side of caution, we headed back to the hotel around 4:30 p.m. and the woman who checked us in apologized for not calling - she said she hadn't realized we were waiting for our room. As it turned out, the woman waiting to check in behind us had the same problem.
Finally, upon check-out we were charged an additional $9.95 "Guest Service Fee" for a list of services we didn't utilize. Harbor Magic Hotels, which owns The Inn at Henderson's Wharf, among other properties, explained on a brochure that it's "excited to now offer all of our most popular services in one convenient Guest Service Fee of $9.95" ... PER NIGHT. Among the services? A "complimentary" bottle of water; free Wi-Fi (Is charging for that still a thing?); unlimited calling; a daily newspaper, etc.
In an effort to fight back, my partner and I ate $10.95 worth of berries at the "complimentary" breakfast buffet, read our "complimentary" newspaper - twice, and pocketed some Earl Grey tea bags.
Honestly? The hotel was terrific and we would absolutely stay again, but we were disappointed to find the kitschy brochure and hidden fee - just increase the cost of the rooms by $10 night. It's still a great value and much less offensive to travelers when they wake up in the morning and find the bill underneath the door.
