Things to Do in the Berkshires, Massachusetts

"In 2018, Frank Muytjens, previously the menswear director of J. Crew, and his partner, Scott Edward Cole, a former restaurateur, reopened the property as a bed-and-breakfast. Stripping away the grannyish décor associated with the genre, they've created a 21st-century version of a New England inn— less Yankee, more Architectural Digest." - Travel + Leisure Editors

The Inn at Kenmore Hall

"Set the scene.A five-room Georgian manor house replete with personal touches, from piles of art books on tables to aged Persian rugs, modern art, and even a couple of mandolins propped up in the back parlor. While the Berkshires’ best art galleries, cultural institutions, restaurants, and hiking trails are only a short drive away, you might be tempted to hole up in the room or fix yourself a drink from the free bar, flipping through vintage fashion magazines, playing chess, or keeping Dutch (the owners’ dog) company. What’s the history behind it?Opened in August 2018, this five-room inn (with adjacent carriage house) is the passion project of Frank Mutyjens, former head of menswear at J. Crew, and his partner, the artist and restaurateur Edward Scott Cole. It’s an informal iteration of the traditional B&B, set on 20 acres of meadow and woodland in the Berkshires town of Richmond. Cole and Muytjens’ 10-year plan to open B&B was fast-forwarded eight years when they fell in love with this grand but overgrown Georgian-Federalist residence, built in 1792 for Henry Sherrill, a soldier in the Revolutionary War. The house went through various incarnations, including a parsonage and summer art school, and played host to a lot of artists, musicians, and performers. What can we expect from our room?Room 3 is the pick of the bunch, with two fireplaces—one in the bedroom and the second in the navy-blue bathroom, which also has a freestanding soaking tub and a heated floor. With its velvet chaise, vintage Eames lounge chair and four-poster king bed, it’s a room you could spend all day in. But every room is different (and hand-painted in masculine Benjamin Moore shades by Frank and Edward themselves), with lush Matteo linens, wool blankets from Faribault Mills, coffee-table books, and a solid selection of Aesop bath potions. How about the food and drink? There’s no restaurant here, but the couple makes a mean breakfast, served in one of the pretty parlor rooms. We refueled with hot black coffee and local apple-cider doughnuts while perusing the morning papers, and then ordered poached eggs with smoked salmon and sourdough from a cooked-to-order menu that also includes granola and frittata. An enthusiastic baker, Cole is even known to turn out homemade pastries from time to time. The couple kindly provide a complimentary bar in the front parlor and a bowl of pistachios to snack on. Anything to say about the service? It’s a special thing being looked after personally by the innkeepers—and such warm, stylish, and interesting ones at that. The vibe here is super-intimate and feels like a well-kept secret, straight from the pages of an interiors magazine. Ask the couple for tips on where to eat and shop nearby, and they’ll kindly oblige (and even disclose those gorgeous paint colors). You’re left to your own devices here, which is highly relaxing, but if you’re after butler-style service, look elsewhere. Who comes here?Creative urban professionals in need of country air and a world-class arts scene. The breakfast table may be shared with a cannabis entrepreneur or art director who has an appreciation for mid-century modern furniture and a casual hiking habit. It's the perfect pied-à-terre for those who love luxury but despise pomp and circumstance. What about the neighborhood?Kenmore Hall is tucked away from the action, with views of green hills and mountain peaks. You'll barely hear a pin drop. There’s not much to do in the quiet pastoral village of Richmond, which consists of centuries-old farms, colonial houses, and not much else. But drive a short distance in any direction and you’ll hit the buzzier towns of Lenox, Stockbridge, Great Barrington, and Chatham. Anything you'd change?A few ice cubes and some soda at the fix-it-yourself bar would have been nice, but aside from that, no. Anything we missed? This stretch of the Berkshires is having its moment as a hub for world-class art institutions (MASS MoCA, the Clark), foodie destinations (the Prairie Whale), and performing arts (Tanglewood, Jacob’s Pillow, and Shakespeare & Company). Skiing and hiking are also draws. Just across the lawn, the inn’s Carriage House Cottage is an even more private retreat, sleeping four people, with its own bar and reading nook. Worth it—and why? It’s rare to find such an intimate accommodation with inspirational interiors that provides a smart experience while being delightfully unstuffy." - Natalie Shukur

The Best New Hotels in the World: 2019 Hot List

"Former J. Crew creative director Frank Muytjens and his partner, chef and artist Scott Edward Cole, bought this 18th-century school house in 2017 and spent the next year fixing it up into a B&B that far exceeds anything else in this neck of the Berkshires. The duo painted the walls of each guestroom themselves (no two are the same) in rich, moody Benjamin Moore shades and sourced much of the elegantly eclectic furniture and objects from their personal collection and local shops such as Sandy Klempner, adding lush linens by Matteo and blankets from Faribault Woolen Mill. A color scheme of camel, navy, grey, and olive, and touches of wool and leather, were inspired by Mutyjens’ menswear career. There are fireplaces in the front and back parlor rooms, a free bar with all the drinks fixings, chessboards, and an impressive collection of art books and back issues of The Face to flick through. A short drive away in North Adams is the peerless MASS MoCA with its collection of masterful contemporary art, while the Tanglewood performance space is the summer residence of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Yet even nights of Wagner hardly compare to mornings back at the inn, where Muytjens pours the coffee, Cole bakes pastries, and they both whip up granola and eggs to order. If you’re lucky, their sweet Vizla pup, Dutch—the unofficial concierge—will show up, too. This is the high-taste country estate to stay in while exploring the arts finds of the Berkshires. FLASH POINT Room Three has a deep charcoal-painted master bathroom with a fireplace and freestanding tub, which is hard to leave. (413) 698-8100; theinnatkenmorehall.com. A dream come true! This impeccable Georgian house is just 10 minutes from Lenox. We arrived on a Friday night and easily found the inn. Upon entering, we were greeted by an elegant hall and two beautiful living rooms filled with carefully curated books and art. The room exceeded our expectations—well-maintained, with a very comfortable bed and linen sheets. Breakfast, served from 8 to 10, offered 4 options. The garden is spectacular, featuring a small vegetable and flower patch. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind. We’ll definitely be back!

My wife and I were looking for an upscale accommodation while attending an event at Tanglewood. What a find. The inn is beautifully decorated and looked as if it were staged for a photo shoot by Architectural Digest. The bedroom was large and comfortable with every amenity thought of. Breakfasts, while limited in choice, were made exactly to your specification and you felt as if you were the only guest. The big treat for me, as a gardener, was the spectacular kitchen garden. Beautifully laid out, maintained and functional. Frank and Scott have a very elevated sense of style and design but also the motivation and energy to make it a reality. Highly recommend a visit.

The owners have invested extensively in this property. It’s a beautiful 1792 house with a stunning entryway, decorated in an understated but luxurious manner with antiques, oriental rugs, and classic art and design books. The room, painted in a deep blue, had two comfortable chairs, a Persian rug, and a brass etegere with more interesting art books. The bathroom had a pleasant tile scheme with plenty of towels and a pair of comfortable bathrobes. Breakfast came with fresh local cider donuts and coffee followed by a very satisfying and elegant full breakfast. We took a tour of the garden, which provides fresh herbs and vegetables for the kitchen. The garden and grounds were reminiscent of an inn we had visited outside of Siena. Cannot recommend this place enough.

The Inn at Kenmore Hall is an incredible bed and breakfast experience in the perfect location! Every detail has been thoughtfully curated and the care that goes into the house and grounds is meticulous. Thank you, Frank & Scott, for the warm hospitality and sharing your home with us!

Lovingly restored 5+ room 1792 Inn. Luxury in so many ways, but retains a lived-in charm. Frank and Scott clearly love hosting, from the beautifully decorated public spaces to the gourmet breakfast served indoors, outdoors or in the sunroom!|We stayed in room 4 with a super king sized bed with luxury linens and a great bathroom with rain shower. A beautiful view of their 20 acres in the back and the sunrise. |A great place to return after days of Berkshires touring. |Expensive but worth it!|It should be noted that our room had no TV.

My husband and I visiting The Inn at Kenmore Hall and are already looking forward to returning. Everything about the stay was a delight. The home manages to be both perfectly curated and completely welcoming and comfortable. Our room (Room 4) was so comfortable and we enjoyed exploring the various rooms of the house and spending time walking the grounds and reading on the back terrace. Breakfast in the morning was delicious and the cocktail cart in the front room was such a treat - we enjoyed being able to mix a drink and sit out back while enjoying the serene setting. It was a quick drive into Lenox or Stockbridge, and only slightly longer to Great Barrington, and we appreciated the ability to come back to the inn and relax after days of exploring.

We stayed 2 nights at this inn which has been a labor of love for the owners. We enjoyed talking with Frank about the inns history and the creative preservation work done here. As far as a stay goes Rm 1, may not be the best choice for you if you’re a light sleeper due to the road noise. It does not have a tv which did not matter to us and the WiFi was excellent. Breakfast here is delightful. There were lovely selections each day and the coffee was delicious. The inn offers a nice complimentary bar but no tea or coffee service is available to guests except at breakfast. While the bathrooms were clean and well stocked we think there could be more attention to detail in housekeeping. It was dusty, candle wax had pooled on the lovely breakfast room floor, and parlor fire places need to be swept out. The garden is well cared for but Outdoor seating isn’t in great shape except for 2 lounges with cushions. Upkeep is always a challenge, but given the price of a 2 night minimum stay we expected a more immaculate inn.

Just returned home from a holiday weekend at The Inn at Kenmore Hall. We stayed in the cottage and it was perfect. Being so close to West Stockbridge and Lenox was great. The location was perfect for exploring The Berkshires.||Every detail for the guest is considered. There were so many fluffy towels in the gorgeous bathroom and wonderful warm blankets for the bed. I loved the heated floor in the bathroom! The cottage is a lovely sanctuary if you're looking for luxury, privacy and serenity. ||Breakfast each morning in the main house was delicious. Great selections for everyone (including thick and crispy bacon!) and the coffee was quite delicious. Really well done!

Yelp
We stayed here for just one night, but everything about it was outstanding. It's an 18th century home turned bed and breakfast. It's a project from the former head of Menswear Design for J. Crew and his partner, is a wonderful balance of classic b&b with chic mid-century influences. The location: A hop, skip, and a jump from Tanglewood, the Norman Rockwell museum, and not too far a drive from MASS MoCA. For dinner, Lenox MA is nearby with lots of good options. Though the inn, like most old homes, abuts the road, once you're on the property it's perfect. The grounds are massive. The Inn: The house itself is beautiful, inside and out. Every room (two shared lounging areas, one dining room, and the room we stayed in) were so well decorated and put together. Nothing felt too precious to sit on or enjoy, and nothing felt cheap. Amenities: Our room was cozy and beautiful. The bathroom floor warmers were a nice surprise on the cold November day we stayed. The Aesop products were a welcome treat, too. Only thing I would have asked for were more plugs given the number of devices we travel with. The breakfast: Oh my god the breakfast. The owners cook it themselves. Simple, tasty, local. And I don't know where they get the beans, but the coffee is absolutely perfect - especially on a fall morning like we had. One note: They have a sweet, friendly dog who is mostly in his own quarters but if you're deathly allergic I'd email them to make sure you have the accommodations you need.
