Had an excellent festive lunch here on a day excursion to the Lake District. The hotel, in its wonderful lakeside setting, dates from the 1830's, and has elegantly furnished lounges and a cosy bar. The downstairs rooms, especially the foyer, were beautifully decorated for Christmas. The wine was quite pricey (though not unreasonable given the hotel's 4 stars and location), and it's card payments only at the bar. We were seated at large tables in the spacious restaurant with its pristine white tablecloths and a lovely view of the lake from the window tables. The staff though quite formal were courteous, attentive and helpful, and service was quick and efficient. Could not fault the meal either: four choices for all three courses, with a vegetarian option. The smoked haddock fishcake, served with warm tartare sauce and charred lemon, had a delicious cheesy centre. For the main course, I chose the traditional turkey with all the trimmings, roasted beef fat potatoes, and seasonal vegetables. The vegetable portions were small, but I had a good helping of turkey and this course in general was well cooked, nicely presented and flavoursome. The white chocolate yule log, with roasted hazelnuts and candied chestnuts, made a scrumptious dessert, and the meal finished with a mince pie and a nice coffee. The garden, with its immaculately kept lawns, was a delightful place for a stroll after the meal. Walked down to the lakeside, where you can sit and watch the boats sail past in the summer. The jetties were now submerged after heavy rain, but it was so peaceful here and the scenery was breathtaking, surrounded on all sides by the majestic fells. Overall, this was a highly enjoyable visit. Would definitely recommend this beautiful hotel and would come here again.
