The Ivens, Lisbon, Autograph Collection

"Why book? Designed by the well-known Spanish interiorist Lázaro Rosa-Violán and the Portuguese Cristina Matos, The Ivens is inspired by the journey of Ivens and Capelo, two of the greatest Portuguese explorers of the 19th century. Travelers and explorers for the new era: This is your place, with no doubt. Set the scene. The Ivens has arrived to show the sophistication of the colonial Portuguese style and to connect the Chiado neighborhood, one of the most rip-roaring of the city, with locals. That’s the reason why Rocco, its restaurant, is one of the places to be right now in Lisbon. Fully booked day after day, here you can find creatives, artists, bohemians, and beautiful people dining or drinking cocktails. The backstory. This is the second Autograph Collection by Marriott in Lisbon—Fontecruz Lisboa is the other one. The Ivens Hotel was home to the first luxury warehouse in the city in the 19th century as well as the first Portuguese public radio. The iconic building is in every way representative of the 19th century, a period which has marked the spirit and culture of the city. Yet another example of how the Autograph Collection is always looking for very special properties to increase its portfolio. The rooms The 87 rooms are designed by Cristina Matos, who chose subtle tones—such as beiges, whites, and greens—with notes of color in the wallpaper and carpets, all of which allude to fauna and flora, and artistic ceilings. Black-and-white flooring predominates in the bathrooms in the standard rooms, while marble is used in the ten corner suites. Panoramic views look out to the Tejo River or to the Chiado. Amenities are by Jo Malone, with a personalized citrus fragrance for the hotel.Food and drink. Its restaurant, Rocco—with more than 500 square meters and 165 seats—offers a tribute to the Mediterranean, the Italian cuisine, and the Portuguese tradition in three different ambiances. At the top of Crudo (“raw”) you will see the counter, where the fish and seafood are prepared. Gastrobar is the central bar and serves meals at any time of the day. Try their special Negronis, the traditional bacalhau à bras, and oysters from the Sado, a river next to Comporta beaches. At Ristorante, the idea is to choose your favorite dishes and craft a tailor-made experience. The lobster with garlic butter, parsley, and saffron risotto is mandatory. And don’t forget to try the tiramisú, made at the moment in each table with tons of mascarpone. The neighborhood/area Intimate and crowded, decadent and sophisticated, Chiado is the best neighborhood to understand why everybody falls in love with Lisbon. Here you can find boutiques, antiquites, flagship stores of Portuguese designers, the famous mall Armazéns do Chiado, and, of course, tons of little bars and cafés. It’s very close to Cais do Sodré in the river, famous for its nightlife, and to Bairro Alto, more underground and bohemian. The service Casual but classy. Note that the Portuguese service is well-known for its special amability and closeness. They will help you if you want to go to nearby golf courses or rent a bike, and organize horseback riding, hiking, or swimming in the beautiful beaches of Costa da Caparica. Finally, in 100 words or less, what makes this hotel worthy of Hot List? Lisbon is experiencing a great moment in the world of travel. In recent years, a lot of new boutique hotels, cool restaurants, and nice shops have changed the city. The Ivens has arrived in the heart of the Chiado neighborhood to confirm this success, with a seal of approval from Marriott. We fell in love with The Ivens because its storytelling talks about explorers, travelers, and incredible adventures that are part of the history of Portugal. Like an oasis hidden in the city (but not hidden from it), when you walk through the door you will find tropical plants, parrots, macaws, beetles, velvet armchairs, and golden details. It’s an authentic jungle in the middle of one of the most romantic cities of the world." - David Moralejo

Neat hotel, great location & wonderful service! Every staff member we encountered was proactive in a comfortable, genuine manner…not forced/fake service levels. Very refreshing - location is perfect, too. We easily explored and were able to pop back into the hotel for a refresh. Rooms are a little small, cozy but doable. Just not a lot of room for two suitcases.

A Five S tar Hotel and Experience. Staff on par with Four Seasons. Always friendly and helpful, gave us great recommendations on where to buy portugese ceramics. a staff that goes above and beyond! |We accidentally left some pastries on our tuk tuk tour and asked if anyone had brought them back to the hotel, a little while later, both the concierge and bellman delivered fresh hot ones to our door. Amazing attention to detail!! |Rooms are in great condition, very clean, although on the small side we were able to fit everything.|Rocco the in house restaurant was delicious! Service was superb! The breakfast there was one of the best we had in Portugal.|Highly recommend staying here, you will not be disappointed!

The hotel is beautifully done, very unique with an extremely reliable staff. The rooms were a good size for the location of the hotel, walking distance to the center of "new Lisbon". The amenities where exactly as described. The restaurant is not to be missed, Rocco. The food is excellent, and again the décor is beautiful. We would come back to the Ivens in a heartbeat.

(NB:Read through for caveats)|Staff: This is an excellent hotel with top drawer staff, who are very capable, very friendly and willing to assist with anything. |Rooms: I was upgraded to a suite, which was lovely, but when I saw my daughter's "regular" room, it was nice, but standard-to-small in size. It had everything one could need, but not much space. She had to move rooms, as the first room she was given faced someone's kitchen window across a very narrow alleyway. Be certain this isn't the type of room you are assigned! As compared to other hotels I'd say this is a very expensive one, given the limited lobby space and rooms.|Restaurant: The restaurant "Rocco" *appears* to be part of the hotel. It is not, and it is run by some sort of arrangement with the hotel. I would absolutely avoid it! 1- it is impossible to get a reservation in the restaurant, even if one is a preferred guest. 2-There are many wonderful restaurants (especially breakfast/lunch spots) nearby (see my other reviews), and the restaurant charges 38 Euros for what was a pathetic ice-cream-bowl-sized dish of rubbish porridge. That was accompanied by a surly employee, who came to our table (after we'd ordered breakfast) to demand our room numbers (breakfast for guests only) -- *after we had obviously provided our room numbers upon entering*. She then asked if we knew the "procedure and cost"!! - as if we might not be able to afford their 38 Euro garbage buffet or porridge. I was *furious*. I was glad I reported that experience to the front desk of the hotel (we just walked out of the restaurant after barely touching our food, I was so offended) as they then informed me the restaurant isn't really part of the hotel. I say this because you can expect surly reservations and service, and it wouldn't be fair to pin it on the hotel, which one wouldn't know was a separate entity.|All in, it's a good hotel with excellent staff, but I remain certain there are many others in Lisbon with larger rooms, a better on site restaurant ,and a bigger lobby to relax in.

I wish I could give Ivens 10 stars. The room, location, and service were impeccably perfect. We stayed here for the later half of our vacation in Portugal. We loved how aesthetic hotel was, as well as the bar and restaurant attached (The Rocco). They’re very well known and we were fortunate to have eaten lunch there on our first day. The staff were so friendly and extremely professional. They paid careful attention to the smallest of details to elevate our stay. I will absolutely be back at this location. Thank you for everything! Lydia & Dave

Thank you for making my birthday stay so special. The hotel is absolutely gorgeous. Great location and within walking distance of great shops and restaurants. Room was awesome and better than I could have ever imagined. Staff and concierge were very nice and helpful. The french toast at the hotel restaurant (Rocco) is worth every single calorie. I would rate my stay a 10 out of 10.

I simply can't say enough about the hospitality demonstrated by staff at The Ivens. We booked a 3-night stay following a cruise with the intention of discovering a bit of Lisbon. The 2nd day was when the multi-country power outage hit. The Ivens' staff did absolutely everything humanly possible to take care of a hotel full of concerned tourists insuring everyone was safe, fed and kept as informed as possible given the situation. Absolutely incredible service and authentically caring hospitality demonstrated by literally everyone we interacted with. ||Not surprisingly, the hotel itself is beautiful, well-maintained and ideally located. A true gem all the way around!

The Ivens is a very classy hotel. The staff and services are pleasant, top notch and eager to please. Lorenzo, a front doorman is a great asset and very helpful in many aspects. |The hotel has a convenient downtown location. |As Marriott Bonvoy members we had great complementary breakfasts. The restaurant, Rocco, is an active happening place in Lisbon.
