The James Suite Hotel | Florence | Tuscany | Smith Hotels

"It may have been home to nuns back in the 16th century, but there’s nothing ascetic about The James Suite Hotel in Florence. In the palazzo’s spacious rooms, vaulted ceilings and Renaissance frescoes play backdrop to a va-va-voom pairing of vintage furniture and contemporary art. The candlelit cocktail bar, glasshouse-like restaurant and city-gazing rooftop terrace round out the cinematic settings. This former convent’s final miracle: it’s in an authentic, undersung neighbourhood a few minutes from the Duomo. Amen." - Mr & Mrs Smith

My husband and I had the most beautiful stay at The James Suites Hotel. This is a boutique hotel recently renovated. It is charming and elegant with great attention to detail, fresh flowers and chocolates in our room, welcome and nighttime notes by the bed. The decor is unique and lovely. From the moment we stepped into the lobby, the staff was attentive, professional, and helpful. We selected this hotel because it is centrally located, 10-15 minute walk from the historical sites, but not in the midst of the craziness which is what my husband and I prefer. I would be remiss if I did not mention the cocktail bar and the unique drinks that we were fortunate to try. We also had dinner in the restaurant one night of our stay and it was so so delicious as was breakfast each morning. The entire staff created a memorable stay for us and we look forward to a return trip soon!

Staying at The James Suite Hotel in Florence is truly a life-enhancing experience. Guests are welcomed by a team whose kindness and professionalism are second to none. The communal areas are designed in an exceptionally refined style, with an incredible attention to detail. The furnishings are adorned with exquisite works of art, giving the atmosphere a unique and original character. We stayed in the Florence Suite, distinguished by its magnificent deep blue walls that envelop you in elegance, and a stunning terrace overlooking the rooftops of Florence. Guests also have access to a housekeeper, always ready to meet any request with courtesy and professionalism. The hotel’s restaurant serves high-quality dishes in the setting of a beautiful winter garden, decorated with Moorish-style lamps and banana plants. In conclusion, our stay at The James Suite Hotel was truly wonderful—an experience we will always remember.

A hidden gem new boutique hotel. The service was exceptional, with great attention to detail and a friendly, welcoming staff. Despite being a small hotel, the rooms are spacious and very clean. They even upgraded us to suites and picked us up from the train station. Perfect location within walking distance of everything. Highly recommended!

A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Florence – The James Tucked away on a quiet, elegant street—just a short stroll from the Duomo and all of Florence’s iconic sights—The James is the kind of boutique hotel you accidentally discover… and never want to leave. From the moment I stepped through the doors, I knew I was in for something special. The design? Impeccable. A seamless mix of classic Florentine charm and contemporary sophistication. Think: luxurious textures, warm lighting, and thoughtful details that make you feel like you’re staying in someone’s very stylish townhouse (someone with exceptionally good taste). The team? Phenomenal. Warm, intuitive, and genuinely caring—like they’ve known you for years and were waiting for your arrival. I felt more like a guest of honor than just another traveler passing through. I may or may not have tried to delay checkout… several times. Now, let’s talk about the 1564 Lounge Bar. Great Negroni’s had a few. It’s the kind of bar that makes you want to cancel your evening plans and just stay put. Dinner at Chef Axel Caldani restaurant was a masterclass in elegance. The menu? Sublime. Inventive without being pretentious, local but globally inspired. In short: The James isn’t just a place to stay—it’s a place to be. Refined, intimate, quietly luxurious… a true Florentine treasure. Mille grazie to Manuela and the team for making it unforgettable. I’ll be back—and next time, I might not leave.

My friend who visited with me has many allergies, but first asked me what allergies they had and responded flexibly!

This hotel must be unique. It's in a building which is reputed to be over 500 years old, and retains many of the original features and atmostphere. This is in some ways this makes it great for a stay in the historic city of Florence, and its location is ideal for visiting many of the attractions on foot. The age of the building does detract a little if what you want are all the conveniences of modern Hotel (there are no lifts and narrow winding stairs to the upper floors for example.)||The room we had was comfortably furnished in a style in keeping with the building and the bathroom excellent. Mini bar, wifi and other services very good although the TV had no access to English speaking channels. Due to the architecture, a little dark.||The staff were exceptional, always welcoming and very helpful and made our short stay most enjoyable.||Breakfast was pretty standard continental but good in the small dining room. Unfortunately the weather was bad during our stay, as there is a very attractive open courtyard which must be idylic in better conditions.||In summary the Hotel is small, welcoming, and full of atmostphere, well located for a short stay. "Historic House" describes it perfectly.

It's a bit off the beaten path, about a 25 minute walk from the Unita train station. This is not a bad thing, as you walk out the door and are not greeted by the rush of people walking by. As other reviewers write, if you want to sleep in a bit of history, this is probably the right place, with some of the original frescoes still intact. But for me, the staff really made our stay in Florence enjoyable. They were friendly, attentive, and prompt. They happily carried our bags up the stairs. They greeted us in the morning for breakfast. They got us (Americans :) ice when we wanted it. My partner needs an electric fan to sleep and they happily accommodated that request. When we checked in, the staff member asked us if this was our first time and when we said yes, she opened up a map and highlighted where everything was relative to our hotel. And even though we had booked a junior suite, we got upgraded to a full suite. All of this is to say that the staff made us feel very welcome and special.
