"Jeanie Johnston Tall Ship When in Dublin city center, it's hard to miss the Jeanie Johnston tall ship tied to a quay on the River Liffey. The ship you see is actually a replica of a ship that transported emigrants to Canada during the Great Famine, taking a total of 2,500 people over the Atlantic between the years 1848 to 1855, a period when a million people left Ireland and another million died of starvation. A guided tour above and below decks on the ship tells stories of the ship and some of those who traveled on her, enduring harsh conditions during voyages which could take up to six weeks."

We weren’t originally planning to visit the Jeanne Johnston as part of our itinerary, but it was included in the Go City pass I purchased and I’m so glad it was! What we expected to be a simple bonus activity ended up being the best thing we did in Dublin and a true highlight of our two-week trip through Ireland and Scotland. The tour itself was fascinating and incredibly moving, offering deep insight into Ireland’s history, especially during the Famine era. What truly made the experience unforgettable was our male tour guide. Regretfully, I can’t recall his name. Nonetheless, he was absolutely outstanding: knowledgeable, entertaining, friendly, and completely captivating from start to finish. His storytelling brought the ship’s history to life in a way that was both emotional and engaging, managing to strike the perfect balance between education and entertainment. It’s rare to come across a guide who can so effortlessly draw you in and make history feel so alive. Thanks to him, the Jeanne Johnston tour went from a spontaneous add-on to one of our most memorable experiences of the entire trip. Highly, highly recommended!

This was one of mine and my partner’s favourite places we visited while in Dublin, it was incredible!! Steve the tour guide was absolutely fantastic, his storytelling was extremely captivating and he was so informative! We were with 6 other people and everyone was in awe whilst he told us the tale of the Jeanie Johnston!! The boat itself is beautiful with such a powerful legacy, I would highly recommend this to anyone who visits Dublin, it was a beautiful uplifting way of ending our trip!! We didn’t buy tickets in advance (my partner spotted the boat while we were walking to find food and we looked it up) but steve was the person we inquired with and he got us into one of the last tours of the day thankfully!!

June 2025. Also great for rainy days and combined with EPIC across the street. We got combo tickets for 32 euro pp. Although not well explained, meeting place was at EPIC. Very well maintained, historically accurate recreation of a "famine ship". Our guide Patrick was funny and informative. The stories of the crossings were so interesting and complemented the museum visit.

Great tour. Our guide (Cliodhna (I think? I'm not great at Irish names)) was clear and well informed. The reconstruction of life in the ship was well done, and I liked to have more general history about the famine as well.

The Jeanie Johnston: An Irish Famine Story tour is absolutely outstanding. Stepping aboard the beautifully recreated ship, we were guided through the powerful history of Ireland’s famine emigrants with passion and depth. Our guide was exceptional — knowledgeable, engaging, and brought the stories of the passengers to life in a truly moving way. The ship itself is a masterpiece, and the entire experience was both emotional and educational. This tour is a must-do in Dublin — unforgettable, heartfelt, and beautifully presented.

Can’t say enough about our tour. On the deck, our guide talked about the events that led to the large emigration in the mid 19th century. He was easy to understand and seemed very knowledgeable. Below deck, the guide talked about life on the ship and why everyone (100%) survived the Jeanine’s passages (vs. 20% mortality rate on other vessels). The guide was happy to answer any and all questions. Definitely recommend the tour. Book in advance.

I've wanted to do this tour for a while, but the weather wasn't suitable or it was booked out. Book in advance as nothing would have been available on the day and it's off peak, so you'd have no hope in the summer. Great guide, friendly and informative. A recreation of an actual boat that saved many peoples lives and gave them a new start. It is a real boat, it recreated the journey and also participated in the tall ships race, so that is interesting in itself. Very good value tickets, think children free or highly discounted, €15 for adults. Tour takes 50 minutes, luas 5 minutes away behind the epic museum, or you can walk in 10 minutes from O'connel street. I highly recommend this.

Absolutely amazing place to visit You learn so much about the history of Ireland during the famine. As you board the ship, you walk among history, and you will hear amazing facts and accounts. Definitely one of the best museums in Dublin. Hats off to Steve for the amazing presentation. Do visit, you will not regret.
