5 Best Day Trips from Hong Kong

"Debuted in 1995, the Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course is the only golf course in Hong Kong open to the public. Located on remote Kau Sai Chau, an island that’s only accessible via solar-powered catamaran service from Sai Kung Pier, the golfing mecca is home to three distinct 18-hole courses—North, South, and East. The East course is the most dramatic, overlooking the South China Sea from a rugged cliffside; the North, designed by Gary Player, is the most challenging (and walking-only). But all pf them sport manicured greens and wildlife spottings, from eagles to herons and deer, which make it a worthwhile outdoor activity (missed putts aside)." - Kate Springer

it’s a PUBLIC golf course where you can enjoy not only golfing (18-hole or driving range), but great food and serenity, no membership needed at that. the ferry near Sai Kung pier runs every 00 20 40, with shuttle van (between KSC pier and main building) matching the schedule.

There are three 18-hole. The course with the most beautiful scenery is East Course then North Course and then South. Good management. But you need to keep the pace so it is not a very relaxed course u will enjoy. The HK Jockey Club manages the course decently despite of the high traffic.

The one and only public golf course in Hong Kong.. take special ferry from saikung port every 20 minute.. it takes 15 minute trip form port to the kausauchau port.. then we will picked up by shiupa till the lobby.. After that we have to check in by showing our qr code sent to email and pay the green fee.. green fee includes the golf car, welcoming drink, warmup ball.. but you have to bring your hk driving license.. alternatively you must rent electric cart to carry your bag.. Fairway is very good, green is well maintained, and the scenery is amazing facing the sea.. fully satisfy 5 stars.. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Nice place to play golf with great scenery. 40 minutes from Central via car, 20 minutes via ferry and 5 minutes bus transfer to the club. Private Pier for Ferry transfer is next to the public piers at Sai Kung town. Buggy on track only. There are chilled drinking water dispensers on the course so no worries about hydration. There is a restaurant and a sandwich kiosk if you need to buy food and drinks. All bookings via online 1 week in advance. Booking opens 9.30am. Usually heavily booked. East course is most scenic and challenging. North course is a walking only course. South course is great too. Good luck, have fun and enjoy.

The only public golf course in Hong Kong! Be prepared for a tee time war 1 week prior to your booking if you want to tee off in the morning. Register for your KSC Jockey Club account before booking for tee time online that opens 7 days in advance. Golf course is well maintained. Except some fairways are a little patchy - some players don’t fix their divots right away (hope we see more responsible players utilizing their portable divot fixing sand bottle). Greens are very well maintained. Sharing my experience as a non local golfer with HKID. Firstly you’d need a valid handicap card that you can get and pay for at GHIN. For the fees, its HKD990 for weekends/PH for 18 holes at the South course. I think it gets to about HKD1500 for non HKID holders. To rent clubs its HKD800 - you get different selection and its first come first serve. We got the pink G430 set! The fee actually comes with a golf cart. BUT since we do not have HK driving license, we can’t drive the carts. We had to drag out golf bags on push carts while the others were using golf carts (TBH this really slowed down the pace of play). You could rent an electric push cart for about HKD75 if i remember correctly but the lady at the front don’t recommend it for first timers. Locker room was kept in great and clean shape. Towels, soap, and hair dryer were provided. The only thing lacking was their weird SOP. I had left my bottle in the ferry on the way back to Sai Kung at 7pm. I called at 7.45pm and asked if I could send my bottle at Sai Kung once my ferry comes back to Sai Kung. They said they can’t. I had to go back to KSC to collect it. Mind you it was already 8pm and the ferry runs once every 30 mins. I had to catch a train that night and if I go back to KSC i have to spend an additional 1 hour just to go back and forth. Understand that they have standards to follow. But under circumstances like this i think exceptions could be made? So yeah i told them to just take my bottle for themselves as i won’t be coming back anytime soon. Ridiculous.

The course is good condition, fairways have many slopes. I prefer the North course, however no buggy, the range is quite simple. East is pretty but very difficult, many blind shots. South a fun game. Make sure to collect loyalty card if regular play. Staff very helpful, especially a wavy haired lady in the locker storage area. Be patient with the staff too. Course marshalls often rush slow golfers. Beware. 4.5 rating if I could.

The only public course in HK and it’s a good one! No wonder it’s almost impossible to get on even with its 3 courses. The ferry ride over was quite scenic as well so that was a nice bonus. And the club house food was delicious. Played the North course and thought it was quite friendly till I hit #9 and #10. It got tough in blink of an eye. The 491yd par 4 to start your back nine really required some course knowledge. Even “playing smart” by laying up on second, your third wedge shot onto that green requires precision. Short is water. Long is haz area. Leave it left and pin high, ball would roll off the false front. Hit it right and short, you flirt with its high-lipped bunker…not to mention wedge + soft sand = buried lie. Yes that’s exactly what happened to me. A great round ruined by the double-par. Anyway, great course for sure. Not the easiest for most I’d think. Looking forward to checking out the East course next time…if we could get a tee time that is.

Wow where do I start. I will try to be fair and waited a week before giving my review to take the emotions out of this review. Hopefully this will help someone and make it a better experience. First, the inability for me to call or email to ask questions before arriving is maddening. This will later come back to haunt me, so 0 stars from this aspect. The experience to get to the course is unique although a bit cumbersome. We took an 35 min uber to the ferry to get to the course. The ride was nice and seeing the landscape was pleasant. Their website however is not clear on which pier to use. It mentions the public pier but do not go there. Go to the one next to the public pier and look for their boats, 2.5 stars. The facility is nice enough but do not expect a welcoming environment or a private touch, 3.5 stars. It felt like the employees are working for the local government and putting in the required hours, 3.5 stars. They did what was required to take care of the guests but nothing more. When we first got off the shuttle bus, after getting off the ferry, no one told us where to go or direct us. I unknowingly went to the club rental first, then proshop (which 100% is the case for every course I've played before this) but that was the wrong place, then lastly to the correct place, which is player/course checkin counter. For all that confusion, 1 star. Check in was a breeze, grabbed my rental clubs, went to the range, hit some balls, 5 stars. The lady that checked me in was nice enough. Got ready to checkin with the starter 10 mins before tee time and this is when the nightmare began and what would haunt me because you can not get a hold of someone ahead of time to answer some simple questions. I brought a non golfer guest with me to join and experience what looked like to be an amazing course with beautiful vistas. The problem is their policy allows only 2 buggies/carts and 4 people in the group. If you are a solo player, you will share the cart with a stranger, which is fine but certainly odd. The tee time I had was fully booked for 4 people so my guest would be the 5th person which is not allowed. I said ok well do you have a tee time open later in the day that is open and we can go out on our own. The clerk said yes in about two hours. And I said great, let's do that. Unfortunately not that simple, the issue is, even to ride along, the person needs a handicap card. I tried to plead my case, my guest does not play golf, only there to enjoy the experience. We will pay the full player rate. The answer was no, a handicap card is required. Btw, what is crazy is they will accept a handicap that is 37 or lower. Is this a joke? That's 109? What is the point of the requirement? They don't want someone that shoots 120? Anyways I asked if there were any options where a non golfer with no handicap card can get on the course. The clerk said you could get on the south or north course as a caddy. I said great let's do that. Nope, not so simple. A caddie must walk the entire course. Its was only 90f and 90% humidity in HK that day. I asked, why can't we both ride in the buggy, it's just the two of us. She said no, either you or the caddy must be walking on every hole. It was up to us who is walking. I, of course at this point, was beyond frustrated and said nevermind, could you please refund me my money. She said I'm not sure I can do that, let me talk to the manager. Thankfully they agreed, -1000 stars. I ask the management at this club, please relax your policies, they do not make sense in terms of having to share a buggy with a stranger, requiring a guest that doesn't play and is only riding along to have a handicap card. But the most important, you need to let potential visitors ask questions before arriving at the club. All that time and effort wasted could have been avoided. I am a passionate golfer but this experience was the worst. The course from what little I could see might have been amazing but sadly because of your policies, I and my guest never got to experience.

Yelp
North Course: beautiful views, terrible condition. If you're looking for an Instagram worthy place, play this course... if you're looking for a course where you can actually putt on the greens stay away. Both the greens and the tee boxes were in terrible condition with scars, ball marks, dead patches, divots, etc. Felt like it was nice years ago but has been let go and now is a nice looking relic that isn't very functional. Incidentally, it started raining after 5 holes. Per normal, they made us wait an hour before closing the course for the day, but then only refunded 50% of my green fee and refused to refund any of my club rental... so all in all I paid, $950HK (about $130USD) to play 5 holes of golf on beat up greens and tee boxes.

Yelp
Decent course with some challenging holes and fairly maintained. Cart path only seems a little unnecessary as the course doesn't appear to have low or soft spots to be concerned with. Customer service is not their strong suit and don't expect help with clubs, etc. Not to the level of world class western courses and service.
