The food was worth the long wait. Luckily you can put your name on the wait-list, leave and check it online so you don't waste your time sitting at the restaurant. The stuffed flounder and ribeye were really delicious. The sampler tray was perfect to test the yummy apps. The key lime pie was a show stopper and worth making room for! Would definitely recommend eating here. We will be back

This place is an absolute gem! It’s casual dining with upscale food, all set in the cutest retro diner right across from the beach. We stopped in to put our name down after a beach day—perfect timing since our condo was conveniently right next door. There was a bit of a wait, but it worked out well as we needed time to freshen up. The food was incredible, and our server, Cricket, couldn’t have been sweeter! We really appreciated being seated at a spacious table that easily accommodated our stroller and baby. Highly recommend this spot for both the food and the overall experience!

Google
First time eating here, and it will definitely become a regular spot. Staff was friendly and on point. The bartenders took excellent care of our party. I was impressed because they never wrote anything down. Get the PBR steamed shrimp and pour some of that beer on top to get the best dipping juices!! Trust me on this! The wings were some of the best I've ever had and don't even get me started on the homemade ranch. 😋

Food was great. Service was great as well. Kid-friendly, coloring pages were provided while we waited for our food. Music background, fun place to dine. Soft shell crab was delicious. My salmon salad was great too. Fresh mixed veggies and the salmon was done perfectly medium. Keylime pie was good but way too sweet for my liking, just my personal preference and fyi.

We went here for the second time and it was delicious once again. They are pretty expensive, like $26-$34 per plate, but the chef is on point. The portion size is extremely small and we left hungry. We got there at 5pm on a Friday night and had to wait 30 minutes for a party of 4. Its an inconspicuous little cafe type vibe, but the food is fresh and flavored well usually. This time, the pork loin on the Surf and turf was dry and the shrimp had little flavor. It was served with pasta for $34, see photos below. The duck was cooked to perfection, but it was a really small portion served with rice with mango in it. I left there hungry. It was $26. My daughter ordered the scallops with orzo rice, which she didn't care for, so we ordered a chicken salad, as well. The chicken salad was reasonably priced at $15.50. At 5pm, they only had 8 servings of duck left and a few servings of their other specials, so get there early if you want their special of the day. The service was impeccable, just really busy. With 3 sodas and 5 entrees, our bill $216 with a tip. We all 4 had specials.

Google
Kill Devil Grill is one of those spots that actually lives up to the hype. Tucked away and small, it’s easy to underestimate — but don’t. Yes, the wait was a full hour, but honestly, it was worth every minute. I went for the Southern Fried Chicken Salad and added shrimp, and let me tell you, it was a damn good call. The fried chicken was golden and crisp on the outside, juicy on the inside. The shrimp were grilled perfectly — plump, seasoned right, not overdone. The salad itself wasn’t an afterthought either; it had fresh greens, crunchy toppings, and just the right amount of dressing to bring it together without drowning it. This place clearly knows its lane and dominates it. No pretense, just great food and a place that feels like it’s been doing it right for years. If you’re in the Outer Banks, make the stop — and don’t skip the shrimp.

Google
The food here was absolutely delicious—every bite was full of flavor. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the service was just as impressive. The staff was friendly, attentive, and really made the experience feel special. It’s clear they take pride in what they do. I had a great time from start to finish and can’t wait to come back and try more from the menu. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great meal and a welcoming environment!

Really enjoyed our meal and will be back. Alyssa C. was a great server ! Wife had flounder sandwich that she enjoyed. I had the flounder & oyster platter on Yukon gold potatoes and a succotash sauce. Couldn't resist the apple crisp with scoop of vanilla ice cream that we shared. Best food we've had this trip !

Allison H.

Yelp
The reviews of this place all said the crab cakes were the best, and they weren't wrong! By far one of the best crab cakes I've had - all meat and minimal fill, with the right amount of crisp. My partner ordered the nightly special, which was a fish with Thai curry sauce, and as good as my crab cake was, I was jealous of his dish. It was so tasty! Server was AWESOME. She clearly knew her stuff and was super friendly. Would definitely come back again!

Yelp
Have been to Kill Devil Grill many times but last night was different in a bad way The manager was playing disco techno music really load and 90% of the patrons were not liking this when asked to play something different she said it would change but she did not. It was just way too loud and completely out of touch with the patrons. The meal was good but she ruined the atmosphere Lots of people sitting at the bar all with football games on there phones and she would not put a game on the TV instead she put on a Baywatch episode She needs to be able to read the room much better

Yelp
Outdoor seating. Nice and airy. Great service. I had the 13oz ribeye, tasty and cooked perfect. Had the wings for appetizer, also delicious, had a bit of a kick. Staff was marvelous Outdoor seating. Yelp
Pretty good food, service, and ambiance. Menu is somewhere between pub and diner. Wife had Caesar salad with crab cake, which she really liked. Son and I had burgers, which were good. For desert, we split a chocolate pecan pie and strawberry shortcake. We liked the pie but not the shortcake, which was too dry and didn't have enough strawberry to offset it. We'd visit again but it wouldn't be our first choice on the outer banks islands.

Jen C.

Yelp
Another year and another delicious visit to the KDG. We also got the Beer Can Shrimp but forgot to get a picture. The service is always great here with everyone chipping in to help each other clear tables, run food, etc. We loved the shrimp so much that we went back the next day just for more shrimp. We were treated to the same amazing service, tasty food, and delicious drinks.

Christin N.

Yelp
Solely off of Service The wait was an hour and we could tell they were very busy so we decided to ask if we could just order wings to take out. The answer was no. Not...yes but it may take 30-45 mins to get them. Just a plain NO. I guess being not nice and telling customers no is the norm here when they are busy.

Dan R.

Yelp
"Just got back from kill devil falls Draped my waterlogged clothes in the hall Reach for a beer, glad that I'm here" (Phish) Our Wild Horse tour guide recommended the KD Grill and said, "all the locals eat there". Well, he was right on the money because man, oh man, was the Kill Devil Grill packed solid. We were told it would be a 45-minute wait when we walked over and waited for a while on the benches at the front of the restaurant. It was so cold that we eventually went into the bar and squeezed next to other folks waiting in the bar, which was also packed solid. Finally, they texted us that a table was ready, and we were seated in a booth in the middle of the dining room, so we had a great view of the hostess station and all the busy goings on. We noticed there was another mass of people waiting by a side door. We met our serve, Becca, who was one of the nicest folks we've encountered on our vacation. We went to their deep menu, and I chose a Grilled Salmon Salad ($18) with a beautifully grilled salmon fillet over mixed greens, cut corn, grape tomatoes, carrots, cukes and a basil citrus vinaigrette. I asked them to hold the included goat cheese, and they did. My wife went for a Grilled Chicken Sandwich ($15) with bacon, Jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, and fries. The portions were big, and half of the salad and sandwich went back to our hotel for the next day's lunch. We decimated the fries on the spot because they were outstanding. Nice job, Kill Devil Grill.

Yelp
Wow this place was great! It was so packed. We stopped in at lunch and I just couldn't wait the 30 mins to eat so we left. Then we came back for dinner and it was 1.5 hrs wait but thankfully I wasn't hungry yet so we sat it out. We went to the bar and got a couple of drinks, I got the painkiller which was fantastic! So I ordered another. The staff was so friendly and we were able to snag a couple seats at the bar before our table was ready. So we took that. I ordered the scallop special which came with mashed potatoes. It was good but I thought the portion was a little small. My husband had the shrimp pasta from the regular menu and I was able to try that. That was fantastic! It was several large shrimp in a yummy red tomato sauce. Omg, I definitely recommend that plate.

Lucas J.

Yelp
Service was good and friendly, the environment is gives small town diner vibes which is nice, but the food is a major issue for me. Went in itching for that seafood taste and left with it unscratched. The food was terribly bland, edible by all counts but about as flavorful as a glass of distilled water. The only part of the meal I enjoyed was their beer can shrimp, which wasn't really something to write home about. Maybe it was just an off day in the kitchen but with so many other great places surrounding with the same or better prices I can confidently say I won't be coming back.

Stephen M.

Yelp
We got to the restaurant and waited for 6 minutes to be seated. Really fast considering the parking lot was full. I got the Big Kahuna Burger and my wife got the fried fish sandwich. Both were excellent as was the service. They are busy always but they handle it well and without looking rushed. If you are in the area do yourself a favor and check them out.

Dena F.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my chicken and dumplings at the Kill Devil Grill. The broth was full of vegetables, mushrooms, large pieces of chicken and 4 large dumplings. I also love that they used a non-plastic takeout container - brilliant!! The broth could have used a little less sodium, but I may be a bit more sensitive to sodium levels than most. The side Caesar was also yummy, with large house made croutons, and a nice parm/crouton crumble mixture. The romaine was also really fresh and crunchy. We'll definitely go here again

Lynette G.

Yelp
I have loved Kill Devil Grill for years, but today I was really disappointed and didn't stay to eat. My husband and I got there about 15 minutes before they were to open. At 11:30, opening time, we got in line with other early arrivals, expecting them to open the doors. They didn't. The line kept growing and we kept waiting. A guy who worked there came out and went back in a few times, with his head down and no word for all of us waiting patiently. Finally around 11:43, we gave up and left. One guy in line said, "if the owner was here and saw that they weren't open, he'd be pissed". I sure hope so. I use a cane and it isn't easy for me to stand and wait, but I plan accordingly, get there early before there's a big line, and that usually works out fine. But if they don't open at opening time, it's hard. So today we left and went somewhere else. Bummed.

Keisha F.

Yelp
Love the vibe of this place! The inside is quite small, which is why there is a long wait (we waited an hour!) The service was friendly and really quick. Now for the food, the cheesesteak rolls are a MUST! They were absolutely delish and everyone on the table loved them. For the entrees, I had the chef's special which was blackened wahoo with grits. It was really well balanced in flavor. My partner had the BBQ burger, which was pretty good but not necessarily great. For dessert, we ordered a rum cake and key lime pie. The rum cake was pretty dry and lacked flavor. The key lime pie on the other hand was really good! So maybe skip the rum cake and grab a slice of pie instead Overall, it was a nice visit! If we came back, I'd probably order the cheesesteak rolls to go and call it good

Rebecca L.

Yelp
Kill Devil Grill never disappoints!!! My husband and I went this past week as it's one of favorite spots in OBX for a great meal. Our server Johnny was absolutely fantastic! Friendly, knowledgeable and he never rushed us. We started with the wings because even after going here for years we had never had them but heard great things. My goodness, the flavor was absolutely amazing!! They are smoked and grilled with the best wing sauce I've ever tasted. Drinks made with Outer Banks Distillery Rum were great too! My husband had the fish special which was rockfish over grits and I had the fried chicken salad. Everything was fresh and had great flavor. Portions were a great size, the salad was huge my husband had to eat some of it because I cannot leave KDG without dessert! My go to is always the key lime pie here, it's fantastic! My husband tried the new Rum cake made with the local Rum. This dessert was perfect! It was light, tasted like a donut/old fashioned cake and was covered with a glaze topped with vanilla ice cream and it was not too boozy either. Our waiter told us they are trying to get the recipe just right so we gave him our feedback. They were so kind and appreciative of our feedback that they gave us that dessert on the house. KDG will always be an absolute stop for us because of the food and excellent service. Keep up the great work!!

Ron T.

Yelp
Excellent food and the manager and staff were very friendly and helpful! I had the burger and fries which were flavorful! Ended with the key lime pie. Words can't describe how amazingly delicious it was. Would absolutely recommend this place and will go back again when I'm in the area!

Heidi F.

Yelp
Got the burgers and fried shrimp. We didn't get the option to pick how our burgers were cooked, they were well done but tasted good! I got the big kahuna, the grilled onions were perfect as well as fhe bacon. Service is great. The atmosphere is a little loud at times as it is a popular spot. It has a 50s diner feel.

Kudakwashe T.

Yelp
The food was delicious. I had the crab cake sandwich and tried the salmon salad, and both were sensational. The sea food tasted fresh and the service was great. The vibes and ambiance were friendly and relaxed, I would recommend this spot if you're looking for good vibes and good food.

Danielle J.

Yelp
Enjoyed dinner here at our first time in outer banks and wanted fresh seafood with daily specials! We had a quick wait at dinner time 20-30 min which we spent taking a walk on a lovely evening, they also have seating out front if you like to wait there. We started off with drinks and their grilled wings which were an amazing appetizer and split a crab cake sandwhich and salmon salad and ended with a fresh strawberry shortcake. This was ample food for two people. The service was great despite the busy restaurant and food was amazing. Will definitely eat here again when we return for a trip to obx in the future.

Steve W.

Yelp
We always love coming here, food is always fantastic and the service is great! My favorite is their ribeye. But for lunch the LOCAL Prime Soft Sammy soft shell crab is tough to beat.

Allison K.

Yelp
Beckett is a super sweet server! We loved him. I got the veg head burger. It fell apart, which isn't unheard of with bean burgers, but it made it difficult to eat. Fries were amazing. Husband got the chicken pasta dish and LOVED it. We would return

Kelly P.

Yelp
Stopped by here today after a kitty hawk beach trip per my Philly friend's recommendation- and boy am I thankful I did. The vibe is laid back, artsy eclectic with punk-rockish/surfer waitstaff who are more than happy to help but not fake-nice, and know the menu well. Since I'm gluten free, I ordered the house wings and basil vinaigrette salad with goat cheese. Both were utterly fantastic with literally NO room for improvement. The 7 or 8 wings were moist, varied between drum and winglet, and with enough char and house spice (medium spice lvl for my taste buds- about a 4) that I didn't need to drench them in the ranch dressing (though, I did at the end to finish them off as a "dessert," since the ranch was deliciously sweet). The salad was super refreshing with crisp, fresh leaves, carrots, and chopped cucumbers (no skin! Woohoo!) and exactly what I needed to offset the heavy, semi-greasy wings. Definitely worth the visit, and if I'm ever in the area again I am SO returning!!

Katherine F.

Yelp
This restaurant has amazing service! They constantly bus the tables to ensure it does not get cluttered. The manager supports the staff by walking around offering to help as well as check in with customers! The food is delicious and they are very understanding of food allergies! In terms of ambience I love that the tvs are only used as display for specials, it's refreshing to eat somewhere that puts the focus back on conversation with families! Very kind to families of children with autism! New favorite restaurant!

Alex P.

Yelp
First time visiting this restaurant and i hope to visit again on my next drive thru the Outer Banks. Food was excellent, with the most delicious Mahi Mahi and Apple Crisp. Summer, our server was terrific and her love of the food shined through when we ordered. Cannot say enough about KDG!

Sandy K.

Yelp
Favorite place in OBX since they opened years ago. Today's wahoo over cheese grits was excellent as was the generous and delicious piece of key lime pie. Service from Amanda was outstanding, also. They don't need another great review, I'm just an especially delighted customer today.

Steven P.

Yelp
Such a great place. Loved the decor and ambiance. Food was fantastic and full of flavor.

Michele D.

Yelp
A fantastic local establishment with exceptional service, high-quality cuisine, and a wide range of menu choices. Our group of four was seated with a smile, even as the restaurant was nearing closing time, and our waitress was incredibly welcoming. We kicked off with some delicious appetizers: cheese steak eggrolls and beer can shrimp - both were delicious. Moving on to our main courses, we savored the fried chicken salad, BBQ burger (a double!), crab cake sandwich, and the big kahuna burger, all prepared to perfection and bursting with flavor. To top it off, we couldn't decide on a dessert, so we indulged in a variety (except for the milkshakes), which were all exceptional. However, the unanimous favorite was the hot apple crisp with ice cream. The most memorable moment of the evening was when we were discussing our plans to head back home since this was our last night in the area. Since our bellies were full and sugar high on full throttle, we considered leaving after dinner. Our waitress, with genuine warmth, said ""after what just happened here, yall should get a good nights sleep and leave in the morning" Whether it was the food or the jovial spirit, we couldn't stop laughing for a good 10 minutes after leaving the restaurant. We also bought a Tye Dye KDG t-shirt. It was cool to discover that the owner's daughter hand-dyes all of them. Definitely worth the price!

Mary Pat S.

Yelp
Can't say enough good things about this place. First time there. Sat at the bar. Excellent service and conversation with the bartender Jen (?). So friendly and welcoming. Food was great. I got the tuna special. Not from here but would def come back. Non descript from the outside but saw the great reviews. Line was out the door when we left. Solid wings. It's a must try!

Pat T.

Yelp
The best restaurant in town. Every dish we ordered was delicious. Especially, the halibut and cheese grits. The fish was perfectly cooked and fresh. The grits were the best I ever had. The waitress was very friendly and down to earth. We had a key lime pie for dessert. It was amazing with vanilla crust. Normally I hate crust but I loved this pie's crust. Yum!

Nancy H.

Yelp
Our favorite food stop on our OBX trip. It does get busy, so be prepared to wait on weekends, but it is well worth it. It is diner-style and cutely decorated, but nothing special in terms of ambiance. Clean, a bit crowded, but it feels nostalgic in some ways. Service was impeccable. Our server was attentive, super detail-oriented. I wouldn't necessarily say friendly, but she ensured that we had everything we needed, tried good food and left full and happy. Couldn't ask for more than that. Food-wise, everything was delicious. Their house made ranch dressing is one of the great treasures of this earth. I got the Fried Chicken Salad mostly to drown in the ranch, but the chicken was also perfection. My husband got their brisket sandwich, which was a special of the day and it was fantastic. For appetizers, both the wings and the Philly egg rolls were great. I would probably order the same things again next time. we will most definitely be back!

Ozoda U.

Yelp
This is the second time we visit this place and the food is still just awesome. We ordered 3 main dishes and total bill was at 71$. The server was very welcoming and she was attentive to our needs. The wait time is still a pain since it's a popular place.

Buck S.

Yelp
Back again! Natalie right on it! Got drinks. Sampler plate. Wings, steak egg rolls, Crispy skins of something. Not sure of the guy name but he was smacking down drinks! Leah was picking up the slack line a champ. love you all!!!! Sat at the bar as... why the heck else would you go! Great vibe!

Suzanne R.

Yelp
The food and atmosphere were all real nice. Loved the samples platter and the delicious cocktails.

William T.

Yelp
Went in the off season and it was still pretty busy but only had 5-10 wait. Service is very good, food is great. I see why there's often a wait. Will return.

Brigette C.

Yelp
Hello We're from out of town. But have a house in Southern shores. Kill devil has always been our favorite. Tonight was such a different experience. It made us really sad. Number one the music. It was like club music. It was Christmas, but it was club music the entire time which is not a goodjust is not a good restaurant vibes..there was a lady who seems like she's a manager was just very dismissive of us when we asked about the music and seemed to double down not caring about our opinion. Just our thoughts, but like I said, it's always been place of ours and something has changed.

Jeni D.

Yelp
First off, love the Metallica references. It's awesome. We pulled in and there was a ton of really neat cars in the parking lot. The service was very attentive and the wings are spicy but amazing. The cheese steak egg rolls confuse the mind but are fantastic. The drunken ribeye was perfect. Definitely a place to stop.

Cj F.

Yelp
Delicious, fast & very friendly helpful staff. Why did I wait so long to stop in?!?! Highly recommend myself after so very many folks recommended them.

Carson B.

Yelp
I tried both the Big Kahuna Burger and the Crab Cake sandwich and the burger was cooked perfectly the way I requested (medium) and the crab cake had no fillers in it thankfully, as opposed to many other crab cakes from other restaurants. The meal came within 15-20 minutes and even though there was a 15 minute wait before we could sit down to eat, we were able to go to the bar before hand and get drinks to kill the time. The waitresses were on top of the drinks and continuously asking us if we needed anything and were quick to help. I would definitely come back to this restaurant! The atmosphere is very welcoming and the staff do a great job of making you feel welcome! I highly recommend The Kill Devil Grill if you are in the area.

Chloe W.

Yelp
Food was good, service was great. There was a little bit of a wait but that just means the place was good! Cool diner feel.

Michelle H.

Yelp
This place was amazing! We had the blackened drum over cheese grits with corn relish. The best dish ever! Then we had key lime pie for dessert. The best key lime pie!! I know I'm using best and ever, but that is truly how the food tasted. The hostess and the waitress both checked in on us during our lunch. Very attentive service!!

Jeff M.

Yelp
Wish I could give this place more than 5 stars! Hands down, the best restaurant I have been to in 10 years. Wait staff was super friendly, well informed and happy to make recommendations! Kitchen was run like a swiss watch and the food was outstanding! If you don't order the key lime pie, I weep for your soul! Go now and hang out as long as it takes to get in and experience a dining experience you will want to write and tell your friends about! Well done Johnny, and the entire KDG team, and thank you!

Jeffrey F.

Yelp
My wife and I, come to see the kitty hawk memorial, when we go out we always go to a local owned place and today was no exception. Got there 12:10 seated 12:20 they stated a 20 min wait. Service was amazing And the food was out of this world, highly recommend stopping in

Tina V.

Yelp
came to the beach for my Birthday!! wanted to try something new. this place was amazing. Jen the sexy bartender had an award winning personality. along with there welcoming coworkers. even met the owner with hus rugged good looks. The atmosphere was upbeat, clean and fun.. but the food was so delicious words can not properly explain. we ate the sampler appetizer so fast forgot to take a picture. I had the chicken pasta,,, veggies so fresh food so good. we live an hour away but i cant wait to come back... you all most try this life changing amazing experience!!!

Burlington K.

Yelp
We love this place and so do the locals!! It's a cute diner from the past. The staff is friendly and attentive, especially for having every seat filled and people waiting. The menu changes with specials , which we order from. Wait in line, enjoy a drink, and your food!

Jo M.

Yelp
Everything is Good.food and drink are amazing. It's a small place but worth it. 45 mins waitlist but found a seat at the bar right a way. Dan made my Long Island ice tea and Omg!! The best drink I've had for a long time. All the bartenders are really nice even the other girl begin the bar was so sweet. She making sure everything was ok and good.

John T.

Yelp
Last week, we had an unusual experience. Having eaten at KDG many times, our experience is that the food and service are consistently excellent. Friend ordered swordfish dinner and she said it was burnt on the bottom. Quality control is so tight, I presumed she was referring to it being blackened and didn't like it. She kept complaining so I took a bite and realized the whole bottom of the fish was burnt, apparently left on the grill too long. It was late in the evening and busy as usual, but nothing like this has ever occurred before.

Frank B.

Yelp
Went again out of convenience. Was very surprised. Service was really quick and very friendly. Got the flounder special and it was perfect. A lot different than the previous night.

Rosa S.

Yelp
If you're looking for a delicious burger and amazing cheesecake.... This is the place to go. We are from out of state and we stumbled on this cute gem. There was a bit of a wait time. But it was so worth it. Our server was super nice and friendly. She gave us recommendations and offered us the specials for the day.

Fred K.

Yelp
This is a good find. Trying to find a place for lunch is hard as most places here open at 3pm. The wait wasn't too long - about 10 minutes. Our server was one of their bartender (was sat on high top by bar) and was very friendly and efficient. Many reviews mention their wings are a must have and it didn't disappoint. My tuna lunch special was good, but was anticipating more like ahi tuna preparations. My wife's jumbo soft shell crab sandwich was filling and real tasty. My daughter got chicken tenders from kids menu. Perfectly fried and tasted really fresh. Had to get their key lime pie which was a good size and oh so good! Would recommend this place to dine in OBX.

Courtney K.

Yelp
Bottom Line: Coastal cuisine and excellent service with a nod to the American diner. I'm a big fan of the Kill Devil Grill and today I was reminded why. Both the food and service are excellent! Today I had one of the specials - fresh grilled tuna with cheese grits and it was scrumptious. Making the dish even better was the fresh avocado and tomato salad on top. I scraped my plate clean and stopped just short of licking it. Sooo good. I was with a party of four and we all ordered specials (shrimp tacos, flounder sandwich and chicken BBQ sandwich ) and we all enjoyed them. Service was excellent. John waited on us and did a stellar job. Several others checked in to see if we needed refills or to-go cups. I appreciate how collaborative the staff is. And I appreciate any place that offers me a to-go cup! Kill Devil Grill has a bit of a diner feel. The front portion is an old diner and then the main dining room has Art Deco decor, stainless steel accents, booths, an open kitchen, etc. But the cuisine is much fresher and more sophisticated than that of a classic diner. The only thing I wish was different at KDG is the noise. We found the music to be loud but we were understandably getting noise from the open kitchen. My party of four visited on a Tuesday in August and arrived shortly before 11:30. By then there was already a line but we were seated within about 10 minutes.
