The King's Garden

Lovely garden to stroll to beat the crowd of the castle. The roses are spectacular. Taking pictures is a wonderland here with the beautiful roses. Love the pond too. The view of the castle from the garden is also nice. You can marvel at the architecture and enjoy the nature too. Remember to wear sunglass and hat during summer season.

We absolutely loved visiting Kongens Have (also known as the King’s Garden) in Copenhagen; we could easily have spent the whole day there if we hadn’t had other plans. It is stunning, quiet, beautifully maintained and full of charm. We visited in early September, and the temperature was still warm so it was so lovely to meander through the grounds and then lie under a big tree on the grass, looking up at the sky and letting time slow down. The garden first opened in the early 1600s (established around 1606) and is one of Copenhagen’s oldest and most beloved public parks. Within its bounds you’ll see the old royal palace (we spotted the castle exterior that day, though we didn’t go inside), beautiful statues, flowerbeds, leafy lawns, old trees and plenty of shady spots offering respite from the sun. The scale of the garden is impressive! It feels massive, open, friendly and surprisingly peaceful even though it’s still in the heart of the city. We found it incredibly romantic; the kind of place perfect for a stroll, a picnic and an afternoon just watching the world go by. The shady benches, the open lawns, the mix of people relaxing and families playing was so lovely to see. We found a spot under a large tree, laid out on the grass and just looked up at the sky, breathing in the calm. The garden is free to enter and open daily; typically it opens early in the morning and closes after sunset (hours vary by season). During the summer months the park stays open quite late, often until 10pm or later when daylight allows. In winter the closing time is earlier. Because we visited in September, we had plenty of daylight and didn’t feel rushed at all. If you are visiting Copenhagen, I highly recommend taking time to wander through Kongens Have. It’s peaceful, gorgeous, accessible and a perfect place for a little escape in the city.

The King’s Garden just next to the hotel was a great place to hang out. As it was a sunny day, it was a nice place to walk and soak in the sunshine. To end off the evening, we got some biscuits from Netto for our breakfast tomorrow as well as some chips for our little picnic at the King’s Garden in the evening. The King’s Garden in Copenhagen is absolutely beautiful and one of the highlights of the city. The gardens are perfectly kept, with colorful flowerbeds, wide lawns, and tree-lined paths that make it a wonderful place to walk, relax, or have a picnic. You also get a great view of Rosenborg Castle, which adds even more charm to the atmosphere. It feels both historic and peaceful at the same time. In the summer, the garden is lively with families, friends, and events, yet there are always quiet corners where you can sit and enjoy the surroundings. Truly a must-visit spot when in Copenhagen!

King’s Garden is a beautiful green space right beside Rosenborg Castle 🌳🏰, right in the heart of Copenhagen. On a sunny day, the greenery and blue sky make it absolutely stunning 🌤️. You get a great view of the castle from the garden and can click some lovely photos 📸. Note — there’s no direct entry from Rosenborg Castle, the garden has a separate entrance outside. King’s Garden use to be the King’s retreat castle. And you can sense it in the air. A little sanctuary in the middle of the city - definitely worth visiting if you are looking for a quiet historical zone.

This is Kongens Have, the King’s Garden — spread just beyond Rosenborg Castle, where Danish royalty once wandered. It’s a broad, open expanse of green, mostly lawn, trimmed and tidy, with long walking paths that crisscross between patches of trees and neatly kept flowerbeds. Marble statues stand watch here and there — noble, a bit weathered, as if they’ve seen centuries of quiet afternoons like this one. No one’s playing games or picnicking or frolicking — it’s more a place for gentle strolling, for couples holding hands or locals cutting through on their way home. It’s pleasant, peaceful, even regal in its restraint. But honestly? Not quite the showstopper its royal name might suggest. A fine garden, yes — but more for the calm than the spectacle.

The Rosenborg Castle is free to walk around and enjoy. I did not go in...The exterior is lovely...you can then walk next door to the King's Garden/Park and see the gardens, the tree-lined walkway and the espalted garden...the rose bushes were extraordinary...especially a newer yellow species developed in Germany.

Yelp Review 2023 #226: You cannot go to Denmark without visiting Rosenborg Castle and the garden attached to it - Kongens Have. The castle itself isn't big and overwhelming so you'll definitely have time to relax at this garden. Copenhagen in general is pretty chill. Nobody's rushing and stressing. And you come here to enjoy the trees, flowers, sculptures, the ducks and swans. However, there is one statue that you might find rather spooky and that is of Queen Caroline Amalie. It's quite a big park (but only maybe a third of the size of Central Park). There are benches so you can take a break and maybe have a snack while enjoying the greenery around you. This is a park so it's free. Kongen Have = King's Garden. I don't remember seeing a statue of a king. Unless it's there and I just wasn't paying attention.

King's Garden was established in the early 17th century as the private gardens of King Christian IV's Rosenborg Castle. There isn't anything specific to see here, unless you plan to visit the castle or want to see the statue of Hans Christian Andersen. We enjoyed a nice relaxing stroll here though and everything was green.

Translated as The King's Garden, this place is the oldest and most popular park in the city. It is mostly a lot of open space, but is well maintained and makes for a beautiful walk. There is a huge lawn covered in flowers, a pathway lined with huge trees, and even a garden maze. I was also told that during the warmer months, they have outdoor concerts and exhibitions here. Though there are not many things to do here, it was relaxing just to stroll around and explore.

A lovely, large, gorgeous park in the middle of Copenhagen! It is lush and clean and well-kept. Even with it being populated by many people enjoying the fair weather and sunshine, it didn't feel crowded and there was little-to-no trash to be seen anywhere. That fact may not be notable to European travelers, but it is a wonder to an American traveler and it was wonderful. The square-trimmed trees are fun and beautiful. The paths are flat and clear of obstructions (other than people stopping to take photos). There is a lovely little garden area, perfect for photo opportunities. And rising up out of the middle of the park is Rosenborg Castle. My stay in Copenhagen was eventful and activity-filled, going non-stop. But I wish I could have had some time to just relax and enjoy sitting in the park for a spell. Either way, you should at least appreciated it with a stroll through on your way to or from the castle. It is lovely.

A lovely picnic spot in the heart of Copenhagen. There are many beautiful gardens to explore, include the castle areas. The rose garden is particularly beautiful when in bloom.

The Kings Garden is part of the Rosenborg Castle royal forest and gardens that has been turned into a beautiful public park for everyone to enjoy. These gardens were originally established by Christian IV for the royal family, but were also functional in their ability to deliver fruits, vegetables, and flowers to the castle. While we were there in the winter and didn't get to see everything in bloom, the layout and design as well as the age of many of the trees was very impressive. My favorite was the pathways lined by lime trees that directed your way to the castle. Everything was well maintained and manicured and we were also able to see the military barracks and the beautiful pavilions designed for commercial sale of goods along the garden walls. It's a worthy visit if you're in Copenhagen, one must always make time to smell and enjoy the flowers.

Nice garden, but it's probably better to visit this place during summer time where you can still see leaves on the trees. Take a walk around and just relax, there's nothing much to do other than some people watching...

Kongens Have or King's Garden is the oldest park in Copenhagen. It was laid out in the 17th century by Christian IV who used it as his vegetable patch. Now, that's a REAL pimp. Truthfully, the garden is more breathtaking than the castle itself: romantic garden paths, immaculately presented flower beds, a marionette theater in the summer, a small cafe with a few benches near Kronprinsessegade (man, these street names!) and perfectly symmetrical trees. It kinda reminded me a bit of Paris' gardens. But the Danes have it better since they have a real castle inside this park. With a moat. And swans. Enjoy.

Park was not too impressive during our visit here. It was green which is always a good thing for a park. Other than that, it was kind of boring. There were no flowers blooming. There was some sculpture art. Lots of trees. I did like the location which was in Copenhagen's City Center. Rosenborg Castle is located here also. I found that to be more interesting than the park itself. I'd wager that Kongens Have is more impressive other times of the year. Just happened that our visit was not one of those times.

My wife and I rented bikes from our hotel to explore around downtown Copenhagen. We accidentally came across this garden on our ride due to a detour....best detour we couldve wanted. The magnitude of the overhanging and well groomed trees right down the middle of the park were just breathtaking. The smaller "maze-like" gardens surrounding the middle were just magical for us to walk through. WARNING - your phone battery may die from the amount of amazing picturesque locations in the park and romantic backgrounds. lol just really was taken by surprise at the beauty and serenity at this local park.

I was pretty freakin amazed by this place because I came to look at the Rosenborg castle, but didn't expect this whole park that surrounds it! Everything was green and perfectly manicured. There were some really nice trees, bushes and flowers to look at at totally photogenic. It would be a great place to hang out and picnic. There's also benches as well. Unfortunately it was a cold day when I came, but I bet this place gets pretty full during the summer.

Really pretty park with gardens and wild life. It's worth walking through here just to admire how well-kept everything is. The path with trees down both sides is a great picture opportunity.

The thing that I love about Copenhagen is the abundance of parks in the middle of the city. This park is one of the nicest. It's smacked right in the city center, a merely walking distance from Copenhagen's busiest station Nørreport st. You can bring your picnic blanket and some food and enjoy the sunshine and the view of the beautiful Rosenborg Castle from afar. Although it's super cliche, it's still one of my favourite activities in the summer. On the winter, or simply colder weather, it's still a nice thing to walk through the park and have the feelings that the spring is just around the corner.

A 17th Century Garden featuring several paths, well-manicured flower beds and plenty of room to relax, King's Garden warrants a stop for anyone visiting Copenhagen, the dusk till dawn hours making it a great place to walk or jog in the early morning or to stroll leisurely after a big meal with plenty of statues, birds and benches along the way.

This maybe one of the few cases where the grounds seem more interesting than the palace it surrounds. Dont get me wrong, Rosenborg is cool in it's own way but compared to the others in town and especially the ones north in HIllerod and such, it doesnt compare. The gardens here are supper varied. Sculpture art, large rows of trees, fields of grass..I was lucky to be here in May where it was basically perfect weather. It's crazy how many nice public open space areas there are in CPH!

Nice place to sit and watch the crowds go by. Lots of benches to sit on, statues to look at, and birds who really really want to help you eat your pizza if you have some. It was a little barren, but spring hasn't really hit yet.

Beautiful park. Summer evenings are great people watching. Get some picnic food and drinks and pick the spot you want. There's everything from rowdy elaborate drinking games with college kids to quiet serene areas to choose from. Best park in the city.

How does a beautiful public space which can be accessed and enjoyed by everyone not deserve five stars?! Perhaps because Copenhageners are spoiled by their wide selection of public gardens (featuring castles no less). Beautiful public parks that are maintained this well are not so easy to come by in other parts of the world. Kongens Have is a formal garden surrounding the Rosenborg Palace in central Copenhagen. It doesn't look very big - and you can walk across it in under 10 minutes - but each corner of the park has a different feel which is worth exploring. Being a formal garden, there are lots of tree-lined avenues and impressive lines-of-sight with statues or fountains at the focal point. This is not an Olmsted-like "natural-but-improved" park space. This is most definitely a "I'm the King and look what I can make nature do" kind of park. The south-west entrance at Gothersgade and Kronprinsessegade is normally the busiest and filled with locals and tourists on sunny days. The green space here is often used for performances/events and can get very crowded. It's also the area with the most children. If you don't like screaming babies...you've been warned. I find this area hectic and overwhelming as it has the most stuff happening and easiest access to the rest of the inner city area. The south-east corner at Sølvgade and Kronprinsessegade is quieter. Easy to find a patch of grass here. On the east side are washrooms and basketball courts. In that area, the hedges are planted in pairs, which means they're huge and have a hollow center. Go look, it's like there's a secret passage inside the well-trimmed hedges. Kids are constantly running in and out of them =) Although, other less innocent activities probably also happen in there. The rose garden near the north-east corner is my favourite because of the summer roses and castle view. In the afternoon, the sun shines fully on the benches facing the castle, and the scent of roses is wonderful. It's usually quiet, and the tall hedges cut you off from the rest of the bustling park. And finally, it's worth it if you're already here to pop around to the Rosenborg gardens entrance on Øster Voldgade. The castle needs admission, but the garden is free. You can sit by the moat under the giant willow and look out over a king's view.
