"On a visit to Cape Town in 2011, Michelle Obama made quite an impression at The Kitchen, a local eatery in Woodstock. It’s easy to see why she—or her staffers—chose this homey spot, stylishly cluttered with an array of retro knickknacks. The former first lady is known for championing a healthy lifestyle, and The Kitchen owner Karen Dudley is no different. Made with fresh, seasonal ingredients, Dudley’s salads and sandwiches promise to deliver wholesome goodness to your taste buds. For a healthy meal followed by a sweet treat, pair the Love Sandwich (filled with avocado, pesto, tomatoes, and onions) with one of Dudley’s divine brownies."
"What started out as a bigger kitchen for owner Karen Dudley’s successful catering company grew organically into the Kitchen, the hottest lunch spot in the most unlikely neighborhood: gritty Woodstock. Often considered the Cape Town equivalent to London’s Ottolenghi, it could be your eccentric grandma’s eat-in kitchen, more vintage or secondhand store than restaurant. Sit down to lunch with one of the ‘love sandwiches’ (named as such, because you pick whatever fillings you love the most from an overwhelming selection, from pestos to cheeses)." - Jane Broughton
First day of opening for 2020 and I was the first customer. Really friendly and helpful staff. Energetic Karen the owner and chef was there to welcome me, even dished out a hug. Great vibe, amazing anchovy fillets buttered toast and sweet tomatoes. Good start for the week.

All salads come from the kitchen. They get visas and travel to other restaurants where they lose a bit of their style, flavor and originality. The salads here are so good they are otherworldly. Transcendental. Delicious. Addictive. If you’re just passing through the city looking for a cheap thrill, you must be prepared to move here and have lunch daily. Did I also mention the coffee is good and the people are kind?

The Kitchen is my favorite lunch spot in Cape Town. The casual, vibey & homely atmosphere makes it a perfect place to enjoy a meal whether on your own or with friends.
You order your food by standing in a queue and choosing from the options and then sit down and eat your food on large tables that you share with others. The food is incredible, full of flavor and love 😍 Takeaway is also an option.

One can feel the love and passion for food as soon as you enter. It helps that the owner / founder is there most of the time too! Superb food. A local gem.

Beautiful, delicious and fresh salads! The atmosphere is uniquely Cape Town. A must visit, whether it's a weekly midday meal or a special treat. Vegetarian heaven with optional meat on the side, it satisfies everyone!

The Kitchen is the coolest eatery in Woodstock. Their salads are super tasty and satisfying, and the casual atmosphere always makes my day. The art is eclectic yet appropriate: the Kitchen is where I discovered gorgeous line-drawings of Woodstock by the talented Mark Hilltout.
