I work in a touring band, and we are blessed in that we travel most of the 50 states every year, and one of us is a serious foodie, so we tend to seek out top flight restaurants as we travel. In the 10 years we have worked together we have eaten some fabulous meals. I have never had a meal better than the one we had tonight at The Knot Bar. There were four of us, and we got three starters, two small plates, four entrees, and a bowl of leek soup and every element of every dish was exceptional. The pickled fish with fennel was very sharp but pleasant and firm. The house made soft cheese was smooth and subtle, and the rye cracker that came with it had a wonderful sprinkle of course salt embedded in its crust. The BREAD. Dense, soft, with a rich yeast and a thin, crackly crust, along with a smear of butter with a faint hint of sweetness.
The mushroom tart was exceptional, each mushroom meaty and tender, the crust buttery. Thebutternut tarte tartin with mascarpone was one of the best things I have ever eaten. The mascaprone arrived a light mocha color and a little dab atop a bite of the finely layered tart with its carmelized edges was a perfect blend of sweet, salt, and savory.
I ordered the duck because someone else at the table ordered what I really wanted, which was the albacore tuna. I don't generally like duck. I have found it gamey and dense as liver in the past. But I was curious because of the juniper berries in the compote. My husband ordered the braised beef. My duck waow who the chef is, but I wish I did. That duck was the best thing on the table, firm, juicy, fatty, flavorful, the platonic ideal of poultry. The juniper was faint but indidpensable, the cranberry compote was bold but not overwhelming. I ignored everyone so I could focus on that duck. Once I came up for air we all started passing bites around. The braised beef was soft and melting, in a perfect sauce. And the sweet potato accompaniment, simply described as "crisy sweet potato", turned out to be a lovely rectangle of an au gratin style dish consisting of fabulously thin sliced sweet potatoes, crisped along the edges, rich and creamy, and topped with three slices of a tiny onion, wonderfully seared. The albacore was an excellent example of the dish, and the crisp capers and delicate beet cubes set it off expertly.
What a meal. And then we walked out into the dark, rain driven evening to peer down at five massive sea lions off the edge of the boardwalk before heading back to our rooms. I won't forget it. The minimalist "Scandi" style decor, the friendly, tattooed server, the river view, there is nothing not to love about The Knot Bar.
