"Do the time warp and experience the relaxing and charismatic theatre on the corner of Orange Street. The best part about this iconic establishment is enjoying a movie like the Grand Budapest Hotel, with a paper bag of popcorn and glass of wine in hand. It’s perfect for date night or an outing with friends, everyone in Gardens loves The Labia and its formed part of our colourful community. A number of restaurants from Societi Bistro to Kauai have joined forces with the theatre by offering dinner specials to their customers!" - Yellow Door Collective

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "My husband took me to The Labia Theatre for my birthday, and it was such a memorable experience! As lovers of abstract and mind-bending movies, we definitely had our fill with their fantastic selection of films. The atmosphere is beautiful—there's such a charming and nostalgic vibe that makes the experience even more special. The staff were incredibly helpful and added to the welcoming feel of the theatre. If you're a fan of unique, thought-provoking cinema in a stunning setting, The Labia Theatre is a must-visit. We'll definitely be back!"

The vibe was very nice, the staff was nice and the movie selection is quite great too. Great place for those that want to watch more indie movies or for date nights

Oh my goodness, what a treat, cannot believe I have lived in Cape Town for 38 years and this was my first visit. Love everything about the theater. The entrance, the greenery, the bar, ticket booth, all amazing original decor. Watched the new Beetlejuice, received a complementary photograph from the photo booth. Loved the atmosphere in the theatre, quite a few people dressed in Beetlejuice black and white stripes.

At more than 70 years old, The Labia Theatre is - according to its website - “the oldest Independent Art-Repertory Cinema in South Africa, showing the best of circuit, independent movies, foreign films, documentaries, classics and other alternative and art circuit films.” I’ve long known about The Labia but only recently visited for the first time. As movie theatres go, it is quite different, with a quirkiness that gives it a unique and Alice-in-Wonderland-like feel. You can tell it’s a theatre by creatives and for creatives or the arty at heart. I’m also impressed that it has lasted as long as it has, including surviving the Covid-19 lockdowns, which decimated the industry in our country. Two things struck me about the place as I walked in: the copious greenery and the bright and bold colours on the walls and fittings. Both these elements gave the impression of a place that is loved and well looked after by those responsible. Space is limited, and so the plants and bright paint also bring life and vibrancy into the space, and add to the ‘fantasy land’ feel of the place. The lobby is artfully decorated with movie memorabilia in the form of posters of old movies but also camera equipment from days gone by. In addition to the box office, there is a chocolate bar that also serves alcoholic drinks, a coffee shop and a pop up shop selling ladies’ clothing. The inside of the lobby is cramped but there is plenty of seating outside to enjoy a chat or drink - or both - while waiting for your movie to start. The selection of movies is as you would expect in an alternative cinema - a combination of current blockbusters, indie productions and documentaries. I liked the selection on offer at the time that I went, and enjoyed the movie I watched. It is advisable to book online otherwise you may have to wait to buy a ticket at the venue until the extent of the online sales has been determined. The theatre also caters for private functions and corporate events. Well worth checking out.

This was a nice outing and something different from the normal movies at the mall. Also better priced and you can get drinks and popcorn from the shop inside as well. Worth a try if you visit Cape Town. Will visit this movie experience again.

Going to the movies is pretty outdated and expensive. However, this place is wonderful. Tickers are much cheaper, nice patio to sit outside and drink and sometimes they run specials where you get a ticket and a meal at a nearby restaurant. If you're keen to see a movie, rather come here instead of one of those overcrowded and overpriced mall movie theaters.

A truly unique and refreshing movie watching experience. Would recommend as an activity with friends or as a date! Loved the authenticity of the old style cinema decorations from the popcorn bowls to the booth where tickets are sold. If you’re looking to watch a movie this is a much more enjoyable experience than a standard commercial theatre. Seats were slightly uncomfortable but that’s expected from old style theater seats.

If i could give the Labia 10 stars I would. This Valentine's our movie group of 7 ladies booked to see the new Bridget Jones Mad about the boy. One of our party is in a wheelchair after a foot operation. The staff took very good care of us on an extremely busy evening and every consideration was made for our wheelchair person to be seated comfortably and together with the rest of the party as well as easily entering and exiting the venue. Needless to say, our movie group loves the Labia and we will be back soon. Hopefully minus the wheelchair.
