The Lawn

The Lawn at UVA is more than just a green space—it’s the heart and soul of the university. Timeless, iconic, and breathtaking in its simplicity, it’s a place that anchors every Wahoo’s college experience. Whether you're tossing a frisbee, napping under the trees, or just passing through on the way to class, The Lawn radiates a sense of history and peace that’s hard to put into words. Graduating on The Lawn brought me to tears—it’s the culmination of years of hard work, friendships, and memories, all unfolding beneath the gaze of the Rotunda. It’s been the same for generations, and that’s part of its magic. Pack a blanket, grab some food, and come enjoy a picnic. The Lawn welcomes everyone—students, families, alumni, and wanderers alike. It’s a place where moments become memories.

It was an exhilarating experience to celebrate my granddaughter, Nadia S. Johnson, as she graduated from University of Virginia, on Sunday, May 18, 2025. Cedric Bernard Rucker, the speaker at the UVA Finals, delivered a poignant and profound speech that resonated deeply within me. His early life experiences struck a chord with me, making me feel as though they were a part of my own reality. Tears welled up in my eyes as I grappled with the profound impact of his words.

It's a gigantic lawn with a length of around 740 ft. It's an ideal place to sit in the sun to relax. This is on the university campus, so on weekdays you will find a lot of students roaming around and sitting on the lawn. You can walk over the grass. It might be tricky to find parking around, so Google nearby paid parking lot. There's one around 5 mins walk from here, called Elliewood Avenue Parking Garage. It charges $3/hr.

Do you know "The Lawn?" I didn't until being nearly forced to get out of my car and walk down the center of "The Lawn" I was pleasently surprised. It's filled with history, yet youthful in feeling. The walk about the place is an excellent idea for any visitors in the area - do it!

The grass here is really tasty, and sometimes you can even find some leftover Bodo's bagels on the ground. Some people bring their kids here, unfortunately. You can and should bring your dogs, because I like dogs. Please let me pet your dog. It's what TJ would have wanted.

Impressive even if you're not a UVA alum. Mr Jefferson himself helped to plan the Lawn. Happened to visit over the holidays when I was the only person present and snapped these great pics.

One of the true architectural treasures in America. It is a living, thriving, academic village just as Jefferson envisioned!
