The Best Hotels and Resorts in Asia: The Gold List 2024

"One of the originals of the Leela group, The Leela Palace Chennai is spot-on for so many reasons. For starters, it nails the location. Set in nearly five acres of prime seafront in the heart of the city, the hotel offers proximity to business and leisure destinations as well as the feeling of being away at a seaside resort. The designers have made every use of the setting and provided a significant number of sea-facing rooms. Restaurants China XO and Jamavar—the former serving Cantonese-focused fare and the latter dishes from India’s north and south—are easily among Chennai’s best. Even if gold isn’t your color and over-the-top opulence not your style, you’ll still love the thoughtful and impeccable butler service that has me returning time and time again. From $160. —Prasad Ramamurthy" - CNT Editors

The Leela Palace Chennai

"Why book? A slick urban hotel that’s centrally located in the city, but has the easy feel of a seaside escape. Set the scene One of the key factors when it comes to choosing a city hotel is location, and it doesn’t get much better than The Leela Palace Chennai. It’s situated in the upscale Adyar, so whether you’re in the city on business or leisure, chances are your destinations are not too far. With large banquet spaces, it’s a highly-sought after spot for conferences and weddings. On weekdays, Library Blu, the hotel’s bar, is packed with guests unwinding post-work, but weekends also bring in locals checking-in for a staycation. The backstory When the hotel opened its doors in 2013, it was one of the originals as imagined by the late Leela group founder, Captain CP Krishnan Nair. The group changed ownership in 2019 and is now managed by a private real estate fund backed by the Canadian multinational company Brookfield Asset Management. But even four years after the takeover, the essence and the experience remain unchanged. The abundant use of gold, the opulent chandeliers, the OTT flower arrangements and the impeccable service. In fact you’d never know there’s new management in the house. The rooms You know the kind of sea views, especially those seen from cosy beds, that make you feel like you’re on vacation, even if it’s just half an hour until your next meeting? You get that here, right in the middle of a heaving metropolis. More than half of the hotel’s 325 spacious rooms and suites have sweeping sea views thanks to its location on the Adyar seafront. The dominant aesthetic, whether in the rooms or in public areas, is what can only be described as India contemporary. A mix of influences – Chettinad-style pillars, the gold leaf and mirror work of Rajasthan, gilded frames showcasing Indian artists, and elaborate flower arrangements – come together to create a unique fingerprint that’s wholly the Leela’s own. While only the suites come with dedicated butler service, all room categories have walk-in closets and bathtubs. Those with back and neck issues will find the hotel’s pillow menu particularly helpful. Food and drink In a city with plenty of good standalone restaurants serving Asian fare, The Leela’s China XO holds its own. The Cantonese-focussed restaurant has an excellent selection of dim sums and offers set menus that make for convenient working lunches. Jamavar, the Indian speciality restaurant, is the other dining venue of note. Its north-of-the-Vindhyas offerings– such as the raan and the dal makhani – are possibly the best that Chennai has to offer. Those with specific dietary requirements will find the Aujasya menus highly satisfying (I know I did!). Created in consultation with nutritionist and food consultant Ankita Jalori, the dishes on offer use millets, whole grains, lean proteins like chicken and fish, and low-fat dairy options, such as goat milk. Try the pearl millet pesarattu at breakfast. It’s served with three different kinds of chutneys. For a light but satisfying dinner, try the chicken broth with 63-degree poached egg soup. The neighborhood/area The hotel is in a quiet, largely residential area called MRC Nagar, so it does feel cut-off from the hubbub of the city but in a good way. MRC, incidentally, stands for Mayor Ramanathan Chettiar, a former city leader and landed gent whose family ‘palace’ is visible from The Leela’s Royal Club. The Adayar Eco Park, a green lung that hugs an estuary, is nearby and worth a visit for its diverse flora and fauna. The service The Leela’s troop of butlers are quick on their feet without being overbearing. They are also well-informed. Mine, for instance, knew which band was playing at what city venue and where the crowd might be to my taste. For families Given the number of families one sees at breakfast, it's surprising that The Leela Palace Chennai doesn't have more in the form of child-friendly services beyond menus for kids. But the servers and butlers certainly step up and can be seen indulging young guests, giving parents the chance to dine uninterrupted. Accessibility Only one of the hotel's 325 rooms and suites, Room number 111, is designed for guests with mobility impairments, including lowered switches, thermostats, sinks, and mirrors; roll-in showers with grab bars and shower seats; and adjustable beds that make getting on and off a wheelchair easier. For those with visual difficulties, communication material is provided with larger font sizes. Eco effort The Leela Hotels and Resorts’ pivot towards being more sustainable is apparent right from the moment you enter the room and realize the temperature’s set to the environmentally sound 25 degrees Celsius. Nearly 90 per cent of the Platinum SEEM-rated hotel’s energy needs are met through their own green sources, including solar and windmills. Organic waste convertors and an in-house bottling plant for potable water are additional steps being employed at the hotel which is currently working on replacing single use plastic water bottles with glass ones. Another green measure is the recycling of soap bars through cleaning solutions company Diversy’s Soap for Hope program. The hotel has also invested in the local community by supporting social causes. For instance, they raise funds and help maintain the facilities of the animal welfare agency Blue Cross of India. Anything left to mention? While an Italian restaurant and a new members club are expected to open in 2024, the one spot that could do with an upgrade is the bar. The cocktails, at this point, are avoidable." - Prasad Ramamurthy

The Leela Palace Chennai (Chennai, India) 1 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"A hotel that devotes a significant chunk of its interior to meeting spaces and ballrooms isn’t hiding the fact that it’s catering to business travelers, but if you’ve ever been on a working trip to India and stayed at one of the eight Leelas, you’ll know that this in no way entails that the rest of the place should be charmless or utilitarian. In the case of the Leela Palace in the city of Chennai, just off the Bay of Bengal, the standard Asian mega-chain opulence is tempered by a very welcome clubby vibe." - Tablet Hotels

We had an excellent stay at this hotel, thanks to the outstanding service from all the staff. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with a warm welcome and genuine hospitality that made us feel at home. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, with a lovely view of the ocean. However, the bathroom could use a little more attention to maintenance — for example, the shower and toilet doors could close more smoothly, and the blinds could be dusted more regularly. The highlight of our stay was without doubt the restaurant. The food selection and quality were exceptional, and the service was attentive and personal. A special mention to Adrija from Guest Relations for her professionalism and kindness, and Aditya from Concierge, who went above and beyond by helping us with SIM card documentation and even arranging a taxi for me days after I had checked out. Heartfelt thanks also to all the restaurant staff, especially Alienala (hope I’ve got the name right!), for making every meal a pleasure. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and will definitely return.

Sumit from room service provided excellent service during my stay. He was polite, professional, and very attentive to details. The room was cleaned to perfection, with everything neatly arranged and shining. His dedication to maintaining cleanliness and ensuring guest comfort was very impressive. Sumit not only completed the task efficiently but also went the extra mile to make sure that the room felt welcoming and fresh. Such service creates a positive impression and enhances the overall experience. I truly appreciate his hard work, commitment, and cheerful attitude. Thank you, Sumit, for your wonderful service and hospitality.

Booked this hotel through my employer for an extended business trip. Definitely the right choice. From our arrival at 4am to our departure everything was superb. Huge rooms with amazing bathtub and walk in wardrobe. Excellent leisure facilities - the pool staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. In fact all staff were friendly and helpful. Room service pizzas were great after a late shift in the office and the choice of food for breakfast really good. We particularly enjoyed the Chinese restaurant in the evening but the Indian restaurant with the sitar entertainment playing everything from Harry Potter to George Michael was also memorable. Thank you to everyone at the Leela for a wonderful stay.

I had the most amazing hotel experience of my life during my stay at The Leela Palace Chennai. I felt like I was coming home rather than just checking into a hotel right away because of everyone's friendliness and personal touch. Shomali, who contacted me in the morning and made me feel like family, deserves a special thank you. Her thoughtfulness and kindness really made a difference. I will always remember Manashi's considerate gesture of getting in touch with me before my visit to personalize every little detail. And at the reception, Urvashi greeted me with such sincere warmth that it instantly set the tone for a wonderful stay. The group went above and beyond to make my birthday truly memorable.||I genuinely couldn't have asked for a better birthday experience, and the team went above and beyond to make it one to remember. Again, I want to thank the whole staff at Leela Palace Chennai for their kindness and consideration. I'm excited to return and am leaving with a ton of wonderful memories!

The only hotel we stay in Chennai! First class service by very well trained staffs. Special mention to Mr Ajit Anurag who made sure we were super comfortable and our every request attended to immediately. Another one to Mehul, our designated butler, for his attentiveness towards each and everyone of us. My most favourite is their buffet breakfast. We usually spend a good hour or two just chilling there enjoying their delicious breakfast. I will totally recommend that you try The Leela Palace when you’re in Chennai!

The Leela Palace in Chennai is an absolute gem! The breakfast spread was delightful, offering a wide variety of delicious options. Our room was spacious with a stunning sea-view, and the bathroom was equally impressive with the luxury of two sinks. Room service food was exceptional, matching the high standards of the hotel. The bar was fantastic, with a great ambiance and superb drinks. The only minor drawback is the location, which is a bit far from most attractions, so we planned for about 30 minutes of travel time. However, the staff’s warmth and top-notch service more than made up for it. The short walk to the nearby Radio Room bar was a nice bonus. Highly recommend this hotel for a luxurious stay in Chennai!

The property and ambience at The Leela Chennai are truly exquisite — the highlight of our stay. The setting is luxurious and elegant, and Chandra at the pool was one of the few genuinely welcoming and professional staff members we met. Unfortunately, the overall experience left us feeling insignificant and unwanted. It seemed that NRIs and foreigners were given clear priority, while we — as Indian guests who paid the same — were consistently overlooked. Some specific experiences: High Tea Service: We waited for over 30 minutes. Multiple staff members passed by, yet no one approached or attended to us. It felt like we were invisible. Traditional Welcome: Despite what is promised, we were never offered the traditional welcome experience. This should not be “on request” — it’s part of the guest journey. Spa Interaction: At the spa, my wife was told by a staff member, Ms. Dukho, that her proper Decathlon swimming costume was “not acceptable” and that she would be “allowed in the jacuzzi this last time.” Such remarks are unprofessional, based on unclear or incorrect standards, and certainly not in keeping with a luxury brand. Turn-down Service: We had to call housekeeping to refill toiletries and restock basics like coffee, tea, and water — a lapse not expected from a hotel of this caliber. Guidance & Navigation: At no point were we offered help, guidance, or directions. For a property this large, not once did anyone proactively assist us or check if we needed support. In all, TRULY FELT LIKE THIS IS THE MOST UNWELCOMING HOTEL IN INDIA — WHERE BEING AN INDIAN IS NOT VALUED. The property is world-class, but the guest experience is inconsistent, biased, and fails to treat Indian guests with the same respect and attention given to foreigners. This imbalance is disappointing for a brand of The Leela’s stature and urgently needs to be addressed if they wish to maintain their reputation for world-class hospitality.

Really exceptional service however there was nothing special about the view from Ocean room and no such big hotel with beautiful landscaping or something. Since its in middle of city. We booked the ocean view room but the view from window was not great. Quite dirty area was there. There is no beach direct connect from hotel which we thought will be. Food was extra ordinary specially the north Indian dishes. Service was great at the reception however the housekeeping or the on call Service was slow. Found it and okay hotel with the location and the views as compared to the price we paid. But overall a nice experience however I may not choose it again in future. The property is quite small.
