There Are a Lot of Quirky Henges Around the United States

"Angling up towards the sky as though they have just burst from beneath the ground, the antique trucks that make up Ron Lessman’s Truckhenge are just the tip of the naive art iceberg on his eccentric farm. Lessman originally created Truckhenge in 2000 as a response to the county officials who were trying to get him to clean up his land. In response to an order to “pick the trucks up,” he elevated the aging vehicles by burying one end in the ground, attached to a heavy concrete base. This tipped the remainder of the vehicle up into the air, and Truckhenge was born. The outspoken Lessman painted slogans across the rusting automobile such as “Rise Up” and “Freedum Isn’t Lost,” making them even more idiosyncratic than before. While the distinctly American henge was initially considered an eyesore, it was eventually designated as a piece of art. In addition to the truck installations, Lessman’s farm is sprinkled with other homemade artworks, most notably a number of found item constructions known as “Beer Bottle City.” Visitors are more than welcome to visit Lessman’s farm so long as they contact Lessman first and arrange to meet up with him. He seems more than proud to show off his creations to guests and is said to be quite the animated storyteller." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

This place is huge and has so much to see. An older gentleman greeted us and gave us a brochure. He was very sweet and gracious to let us explore. You can bring spray paint if you want. Be sure to thank him!

Great shooting range, and some really unique art around the property! I'll have to come back and explore a little more at a later date, but I primarily went to see their gun range this visit. I spoke with a woman on the way in and asked about any range rules to follow. She said it's $20 per person, and nothing larger than 9mm. I planned to shoot 9mm today so I didn't ask about larger pistol calibers. I did ask about bringing targets next time, and was told that they're okay with it as long as you don't leave trash, and the targets are paper/flip targets/etc that don't leave any shrapnel behind. I did notice a fair bit of trash, empty ammo boxes, and shell casings laying around which made me very disappointed in those who are using the range. Clean up after yourselves, and respect these peoples' property. They're doing us all a favor by allowing us to use their land to shoot on. Thank you Lessman Farm! I'll see you again soon!

Best shooting range open to the public in the area. None of that "you've got to know someone" nepotism and "no rapid fire" idiocy. "Shoot towards the east and aim low" was the only thing the older gentleman told me by way of rules. $20 cash entry is straightforward. Large open area with a line of berms, perhaps 65x100 meters in size. Great place, absolutely night and day compared to the other 2 options in the area which are either fudd ranges, extremely expensive, exclusive (profiling) or prohibitively stringent with what you choose to do with your firearms. Great place, will be coming here to do my shooting from now on.

The owner is super nice. It's free drive thru quick stop. He's made everything by hand.

What a cool place! I am assuming it was Mr. Lessman that stopped and spoke to us before driving around!! Definitely an artist of his own style and I loved it! When the city says you gotta put things away, you just make art out of it!!!

Yelp
We felt like we were driving to Captain Spauldings trying to get here. My daughter thought we were driving to our death. We survived! It's down sketchy road. Their house, if it's a house, is covered in eclectic garbage hoarding? With animals like peacocks and chickens. The wife stood on their balcony telling us the take of their battle with the city and issues with cars on their property which ended up leading to their tourist attraction Truckhenge. It was smaller than I thought. Only took 15 minutes of our time. We didn't meet the owner, super disappointed there! We saw everything. Took it in and glad we made it out alive! My friend declared he is pretty sure human remains are somewhere on this property! Tip: wear old sneakers (it was muddy) and go during daylight.

Yelp
We loved Truckhenge. The owner was super friendly & the grounds were very interesting. Just a short drive off the highway. If you like obscure roadside attractions, this is for you.

Yelp
My (now husband) took me here last summer and I'm pretty sure I was having culture shock (but in a good way) because I had just listened to the Podcast S-Town & read the book Hillbilly Elegy as well as watched the movie on Netflix or Hulu. But yes, culture shock in the best way. I had no idea this hidden gem was so close to me. It was so fun and we can't wait to come back this summer with some friends. But this time we will be prepared- bring old christmas lights, spray paint cans (not empty ones), your fishing poles, & bug spray. Awesome cultural gem that you will not experience anywhere else.

Yelp
Super unique artistic tourist attraction that must've took ALOT of mechanical as well as artistic skills and creativity. I love how these people upcycled various items such as cars, buses, boats, tables, etc. Into works of art into their own backyard which is set up for tourists to drive through and is very conviniently located north of the interstate.

Yelp
T.M.s review is spot on. I couldn't have said it better. My family and I really enjoyed the time at the farm...

Yelp
When I drove down the road and saw a peacock, I was sure I was hallucinating. The tour around Lessman's property made me believe it more (spoiler: the peacock was his pet (he has several!)). Starting with the politically charged story of his fight with the city government, Lessman showed us Truckhenge; things took a more humorous turn as he showed us The World's Largest Lump of Chirstmas Lights and his beautiful beer bottle sculptures. The entire property is a well thought out joke with chainsaw art, beer bottle art, lights, a concert stage, a shed full of ancient bones, and a house shaped like a bunker with a painted floor that you have to see to believe. Fabulous! Be sure to bring spray paint to contribute to the ever changing scenery of truckhenge or some string lights to contribute to the Lump.
