We had a late start to the day so we decided to grab lunch before seeing the Port Douglas sights. We decided to check out The Little Larder, a cafe which is located on the main road.
We dropped in on a Saturday at noon. They have a cute outdoor setup with a few patio tables on the sidewalk and then a couple smaller seats up the stairs. Perfect for people watching so we snagged one.
There's two different menus: brunch (7:30am to 11:30am) and lunch (12:00pm to 3:00pm). Lunch is sandwiches and bowls/salads. Drink menu is a little more interesting: coffee, tea, house made cold drinks, freshly squeezed juices, milkshakes, smoothies and fresh fruit slushies. They even do cocktails, beer and cider, spritzer and wine/sparkling.
- Iced latte ($4.40 AUD) - this looked promising but it was bland and watered down. Not very good.
- Housemade kombucha ($5.00 AUD) - sounded great on the menu but this was one dinky cup. They also put in ice which watered down the already weak flavours. I love kombucha; this one was a disappointment.
- Middle eastern lamb ($13.50 AUD) - slow roasted lamb shoulder, dry rubbed with ras el hanout, green harissa, house made za'atar labneh and rocket on wood fired ciabatta. This was the better of the two sandwiches. The za'atar labneh was tasty. Lamb was good but could have been more gamey.
- Crab claw ($13.50 AUD) - crab, crispy slaw, avocado and mayo on a crusty baguette. This was sad. Baguette was nowhere near being crusty. They topped it with some alfalfa sprouts which added nothing to the sandwich. The worst part was that the crab and the avo was so bland. We had to add salt and pepper to give it some flavour. Just terrible!
No idea why LL is so highly rated. They must be living off of their Lonely Planet reputation. Wish we had checked out Cafe Fresq instead.
