A Horror Buff's Great American Roadtrip

"BRAINS. BRAAAAAIIIIIINNNSSS… are not what you will find in the zombie museum. Zombies in pop culture are celebrated at the Living Dead Museum in Evans City, Pennsylvania, the filming location of the classic film Night of the Living Dead. The quintessential zombie film that introduced many horror movie tropes, Night of the Living Dead was filmed in and around Evans City by George Romero in 1967. The Living Dead Museum and retail store is located in Monroeville Mall, (and originally known as Monroeville Zombies) where the sequel Dawn of the Dead was filmed. The museum shows the history of zombies in pop culture; starting from a myth of the Babylonian Ishtar where she says she will “bring up the dead to eat the living” if Ereshkigal does not open the door to the Underworld, through earlier zombie films White Zombie and Plan 9 From Outer Space to Night of the Living Dead, all the way to the present. Other zombie movies, television shows, comic books, and video game franchises are also shown on the museum’s timeline, like The Walking Dead and Resident Evil. In addition to the history of the undead, there are also celebrity handprints are on the museum’s wonderfully titled, Maul of Fame, including George Romero’s, along with movie props and production photographs and notes. With the popularity of zombies at an all-time high, it’s about time those lumbering flesh-eaters we all know and love got their due." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

So glad to have gotten to visit in person! Self tour, Allowed to take pictures of everything and got some phenomenal selfies. The staff was very knowledgeable and a clear fan of the films. Extremely well done.

Thank you for the military discount! This is a fantastic museum in the Monroeville Mall where “Dawn of the Dead” was filmed. Lots of movie memorabilia from zombie movies and a nice gift shop.

The Living Dead Museum at Monroeville Mall is an absolute treasure for anyone who loves film history, especially horror. Just outside of Pittsburgh, this unique spot celebrates the legacy of Dawn of the Dead, which was famously filmed right here in the mall, with authentic props and behind-the-scenes history. But it doesn’t stop there—the museum also highlights other Pittsburgh classics like Creepshow, The Crazies, and even the series Mindhunter. The exhibits go beyond memorabilia, offering a full timeline of zombie cinema with life-size figures, posters, and original materials that bring the genre to life. Best of all, the displays evolve and change over time, so every visit feels fresh and new. I make a point to stop by every year, and it never disappoints—an absolute must-see for movie lovers and horror fans alike.

Really cool for George Romero fans. Located in the still-operating shopping mall where "Dawn of the Dead" was filmed, the museum features 8 rooms of movie facts and memorabilia and the gift shop is full of ghoulish goodies! We knew of the mall from the movie, so we stopped on a whim driving home to NE Ohio from Pittsburgh -- didn't even know about the museum -- bonus!

Absolutely awesome experience and very friendly staff! Its $8 for the self guided museum tour and worth EVERY penny. They have props and set pieces from multiple movies, including Evil Dead 😀 was impressed by the sheer size of it and how much they were able to fit in a relatively small space. Will absolutely be back to check it out again! Thanks for the wonderful experience ladies and gentlemen!

This place is amazing. I would recommend it for any horror fan or movie fan. Tons of behind the scenes stuff, actual movie props and info on Romero and dead. They have scenes from movie and life size zombie mannequins. It might be scary for a little kid who'd think it was real but nothing really bad. You go through at your pace and can take pictures. They have a gift shop too so you can get a shirt or some memorabilia. Go see it before Walmart tears the mall down !

Love this place SO MUCH! What a great little gem in a sadly dying mall. I really hope that the preservation efforts I've heard about regarding the mall come to fruition. Anyway, The Living Dead Museum is a must see attraction for any zombie movie fan. Some great artifacts from all of Romero's movies, and even some from Evil Dead. I went with my family and I got lost in wonder with all of these great little exhibits. There are a few extra zombie nods too, like Fulci's zombie, some Creeps how goodies and even a Micheal Jackson mannequin in the Thriller gear. The highlight for me, though, was the preserved elevator that (I believe) was in the old Pennies store where Flyboy meets his demise in Dawn... they have Flyboy standing in it, and it makes for a great photo op. Seriously, like zombies? Go check this museum out after getting your nerd on over the most famous mall in horror film history. It'll be the icing on your cake... "where's my cake!?"
