After being in North Carolina on and off since 1974, I finally decided to take my lazy ass to Asheville for the weekend and see what all the hubbub is about. Boy, am I glad I did!
Although it took longer to travel via the Blue Ridge Parkway, that was my favorite part of the whole trip. I would love to park the car at a designated overview and sit and look at the marvel of the lush hills and valleys and mountains. I found an affordable and nice hotel walkable distance to downtown Asheville and decided for once in my life to go to restaurants and order what I want to order and not always look at the price. I searched Yelp to see what the options were and my eyes kept gravitating towards The Lobster Trap. I remember my daughter Devon telling me that the ability to get a whole lobster in Greensboro is quite limited and so I was intrigued by having one in Asheville. The last time I had a whole lobster was when I graduated Middle School! Don't you think it was time for a second one? The frugal me clutched my pearls when I saw that it was $43, but then I know that my kids would spend that in a heartbeat if that's what they wanted. It was time to learn from them and treat myself. If they inherit $43 less for me when I die, they will survive!
The Lobster Trap is located right in the heart of downtown Asheville. It just took me 10 minutes from my hotel to get there by foot. The ambiance was fine, spacious with lots of tables and a full service bar. I was able to make a reservation and so my table was waiting for me when I arrived at 7:15. Jordan I believe was his name, was the bartender and my waiter. He had a hard job handling both tables and bar but I found him very pleasant and really working as hard as he could to be there for everybody! Jordan suggested the bacon-wrapped scallops for an appetizer. It did not sound very kosher to me but then again I was having lobster as the main course LOL. The scallops were indeed scrumptious, covered in a maple-like syrup that gave it an extra zing. I enjoyed it it . I usually NEVER order an appetizer; especially one that is $13. What the hell!! Then came the long-awaited whole lobster adorned with corn and potatoes. The bib came on, the tools were in hand and I began to devour that baby from head to toe. I even allowed myself to dip everything in the melted butter. I had a ball. Lobster sure is delicious and I wish it were cheaper because it has an amazing taste. I devoured it all including the corn and potatoes.
I included a photo of the menu because there were some other amazing things including a whole lobster that is smothered in other seafood. That's for my next visit! The bill was a little high for me, but not really when you consider I had a whole lobster and a large appetizer and drink and tax and tip. And that's when I told myself to stop being so frugal and enjoy the meal... Which I most definitely did!
After dinner, it's so nice to stroll through downtown Asheboro and see all the wonderful shops, boutiques, stores, hotels and restaurants. Quite a charming downtown, if I may say so. So next time you are in Western Carolina and craving one of the sea's delicacies, I highly recommend you head over to The Lobster Trap, strap on that bib and dive in!
