The Big Island's Sleepy East Coast is Waking Up | Condé Nast Traveler

"A Thursday stop around 2:30 rewarded me with still-warm poi made from Waipiʻo-grown taro—“a taste of a 1,000-year tradition”—a tip that connected the grocer’s shelves directly to the island’s living foodways." - Jen Murphy

"You can die anytime, but living takes true courage." -- Kenshin Himura What a wonderful health food store & gift shop. If you're wondering: "Locavore" is a person whose diet consists only or principally of locally grown or produced food. Add a bunch of uniques gift ideas by Big Island artists and life is complete. Located in the heart of old town Hilo on Kilauea Avenue is where you'll find Locavore or as locals will know it's next to Ben Franklin. The staff of Sam and Audrey were genuinely kind and welcoming. I was most impressed with their knowledge of products and pride in what they had to offer. My sister (who I was visiting) purchased fresh non-GMO produce and pickled namasu. Since I was visiting Hilo I chose unique stickers and postcards to take home with me. I really felt a warm peaceful vibe while browsing around. On a Sunday afternoon it was filled with curious customers. Health conscience hippies, those looking for local arts & crafts, and a few locals living la viva Locavore lifestyle. What a fab gem in old town Hilo. Til next time... Pls follow my adventures IG: @eric_travel_guru

The Locavore Store is a hidden treasure for those who appreciate the beauty of locally sourced products. Everything in this store, from the produce to the snacks, packaged goods, pasta, frozen meals, meat, and more, is proudly made right here in Hawaii. It's a celebration of the island's diverse flavors and talents. What sets this store apart is its dedication to supporting the local community. It's a place where every item tells a story and where the spirit of the islands truly comes to life.

I love coming here to get fruits, seasoning, chocolate, bread, juice, and Mac nuts. Everything sold here is local. The workers recognize me and they always have smiles on their faces. This is a great place and I always recommend it to my friends.

Google
Locavore has one of the best assortment of products if you're looking for locally made items and locally sourced produce and meats. They have a great selection of unique and seasonal items and if you're looking to try new things, they almost always have something tasty and interesting. You can get ahi jerky here, vanilla beans, Mac nuts, hot sauces and delicious locally made ice creams. They also have a maker section with cards, jewelry, and beauty products. The staff is super friendly and always so helpful and I have never had a bad experience here.

Google
Amazing assortment of local produce, healthy packaged foods and local gifts and artists by localilians. You will not find anything here that is not local so don’t even ask lol. And if you are not local enter at your own risk. No but all jokes aside this is a very cool little store packed full of treasures. Team is super loving nice and filled with an abundance of aloha spirit. I had some of the most amazing local kava cacao in the island there. Was pretty splendid!

Jeremiah S.

Google
Love this shop ! Hawaii based products of all kinds: meats, poi, locally grown produce, etc. I recommend shopping here if you want to keep it local and want great products?

Google
Full of Aloha! Has all the special products that reflect the Aina.. as a local beekeeper I just think we're blessed to have this place as it grows and prospers.

Paul E.

Google
Very local, pretty original. It is my go to place for delicious organic "Family Farm" apple bananas. Ripe, full and firm. But they also have local beauty products, frozen meats and fish and even local granola, to go with local fresh fruits and veggies.

Yelp
This place is amazing! There are so many local products. Not only does Locavore have many vegetarian and vegan products but they also carry local meats as well. One of the things I really love is that they highlight Kanaka owned business and products. The staff is nice as well! The first time I went I ended up going back the next day.

Yelp
While visiting Hilo from LA, I found the Locavore Store as I was searching for stores that sold Spicy Ninja Sauce. Not only did I find my favorite hot sauce, but I also found a variety of local snacks and condiments that I've never seen before. If you are health conscious, they have plenty of items that don't contain additives. I also purchased a bottle of Kauai smoke sauce, a smokey barbecue sauce, and I use it frequently to elevate my meals. If you're looking to buy any local gifts to take home, I would definitely come here!
google avatar

Yelp
This is kind of a hidden gem - I have told all my friends about it since they have a lot of quality items and some things are really competitively priced! Who would think you'd get a nice variety of poi here at this store? But I love that they have poi from different kalo/taro all the time. They also have a nice variety of organic produce and local products. The workers are helpful when I have asked questions and they are kind and friendly. I have started to come by here pretty regularly.

Yelp
Came here only for the poké pockets from the Poké Market just around the corner-the restaurant notified us that the pockets were sold at this local store. Arrived and found this cute little market filled with a little bit of everything-food, produce, soap, cards, oils, coffee, and so much more. We got the Hawaiian poké pockets-6 count (ahi tuna, ginger cumber, and taro/sweet potato salad) wrapped in a sweet tofu pocket. Never had taro potato salad so this was great! Definitely recommend trying it out!

Yelp
The Lovcavore has amazing fresh Hawaiian fruits and more for a great price. To give an example is the store sold super delicious soursop sop for 2.50 per pound, whereas the farmers market was selling for almost 5 dollars per pound. Please support this boutique grocery story when you are in Hilo!
google avatar

Yelp
I came here looking for poke, they do not have poke. But the store is super cute, very swanky little hippie locavore store in Hilo. Some cool art, sustainable and fresh food from locale. Great staff, did not otherwise buy anything but paroused around and viewed.

Yelp
Terrible experience! We went in to grab a few items for a picnic. The woman completely ignored us despite our being the only customers there. When we checked out she acted like we were a terrible annoyance and would not answer a simple question. Maybe she is the owner others complained about. Either way she has no business in customer service. For the ludicrously high prices they are chargingly would hope for exemplary service at least.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is awesome! Went here during a trip to the Big Island and loved being able to shop super local items. They had a great selection of both fresh food and produce as well as products that were made locally. Great place to find souvenirs and gifts or to find great produce to cook for dinner!
google avatar

Yelp
I love their cocao nib tea and drive an hour and 45 minutes from south point in Kau to buy it.
google avatar

Yelp
Great service and the packaging was supreme. Quick delivery too. Will order from them again!

Yelp
Husband found this store while we were going to the DMV in Hilo. He is obsessed with all the local produce, meat, etc. (he cooks, I burn water) And its well priced too for being local and/or organic. They also carry other goods, such as jewelry, soaps, beauty products, natural bug repellents, etc. Check it out, I recommend the Ahi Jerky & the Don't bug me oil!
google avatar

Lala C.

Yelp
Cute store but not worth the walk to get here from their old location. Wasn't sure what all the hype was about from reading reviews. Maybe all their inventory wasn't out yet? Not sure but won't be back.
google avatar

Yelp
I stumbled upon Locavore when I moved to Hilo back in March of 2021. I love this store. I especially appreciate the local commitment they have with their products. I bring any visiting friends or family here. The staff is always friendly and helpful. It would be nice to see them expand the section of art that they sell. Other than that, drop by and enjoy the feel of Hilo that Locavore brings. The Good: Nice range of local food and products. Friendly staff The Bad: Nothing really. Maybe expanding more products but that's not "bad" just a suggestion. Chances I'll be back: Of course! I try to visit whenever I'm near Bayfront.
google avatar

Veronica N.

Yelp
The store has your various food needs and also some gourmet items. They have a variety of drinks including kombucha. They also have local produce and some fruit as well. They also have pizza, gelato, beef, lamb, chicken items, variety of honey, spices, nuts, tea and coffee.
google avatar

Yelp
While I haven't been to this store yet, Brine sells their things out of this shop and I couldn't find a Brine thing to review so here it is: DELICIOUS VEGAN FOOD!! I look forward to it every week at the Hamakua Harvest! It is so delicious and believe me I am counting down the days til the next time I get to eat some of this delicious food!

Cheri S.

Yelp
This is such a spectacular store!! I went three times in two days to keep gathering locally made treats to take back home as souvenirs. A barista down the street told us about this place while we were walking around downtown Hilo and it was one of the highlights of our day. Such a fantastic place highlighting local Hawaiian foods and products. Don't miss it!

Yelp
This is one of the cutest stores I've been too, I love shopping local bread and vegetables from it, they also sell cool t shorts and souvenirs, lots of handmade spas and jewelry it's good for locals and tourists

Verna L.

Yelp
Great local produce. Specialty chicken pot pies made in Hawaii. Very Delish. Always run it to get the sushi bombs made by poke market - a must try!!

Nick B.

Yelp
I was really surprised with this one and was very disappointed about my recent experience. I've been a customer for almost year. The boutique style shop offers items at a higher price point but that is OK for me since it products are local and of quality. The store attendants were also very nice. Recently, I bought an ice cream that didn't quite agree to my taste; it was so tart that I couldn't really enjoy it. I called the shop thinking that it won't be a big deal since I am already paying premium for its products. I assumed part of their mission is to provide a full positive customer experience. Unfortunately, the "owner" in a passive aggressive tone told me that they won't do an exchange or a refund because its falls under customer preference and she was VERY SORRY. This was the first time I requested an exchange. Sadly the "boutique" facade doesn't live up to the hype. In my book any business willing to lose a customer over $8 is trash. Even Aldi takes exchanges without question. I was talking up this place to my friends and family, but not anymore. BYE LOVACORE!!

Yelp
This place is really awesome for local produce and goods. It's a small store, and due to COVID you may have to wait a little while outside if it's busy, but that's fine by me and I appreciate that they are limiting people inside right now. Everyone who works there is so incredibly nice and relaxed, and super helpful if you have a question. Prices for some items (especially goods) can be really high so keep that in mind, but it's a great place to get locally sourced and produced gifts. I appreciate their reduced price produce section.
google avatar

Armando M.

Yelp
Amazing place. If we just had more people in the world like the staff in this location we would be just fine:) thank you for all the great options you bring to the community. We appreciate all the local sourced produce and items.
google avatar

Ethan S.

Yelp
I felt completely disrespected and have avoided going here for years. The pretentious staff is insufferable. I will never go back. They did not have the 1 single thing I wanted. As a local, I cannot recommend this place. Go somewhere else.

Yelp
Super cool little shop at the far north end of Hilo Bayfront. They have some great fresh items and I discovered my current obsession during my last visit - Kunoa Beef Sticks. Hawaiian Islands raised and produced beef. Yum! A bit expensive, but that is the type of business you are supporting when you go - fair prices, good quality, excellent service. I'll be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute little shop with local favs. Love the popsicle I got for my son and he ate it all up.

Yelp
I was recently on the Big Island of Hawaii with a friend and found The Locavore Store during our wanderings. From the outside it looked like a really interesting store, so my friend and I went in to check it out in hopes of finding a few unusual items to take home with us. Unfortunately just moments after we entered the store, we were approached by the storekeeper who for whatever reason had a bee up her bonnet and she was incredibly rude to us, so rude that we just turned around and walked straight out of there. I don't know if she was the owner or and employee, but it's difficult to imagine that with this attitude, the store is even still in business. If you are an employee, maybe it's time to find a new job, and if you are the owner...I suggest getting out of the retail business and getting a job where you don't have to deal with the public!
google avatar

Tiff H.

Yelp
We were driving downtown and took a road to lead us back to the highway when we seen the locavore. We've never heard of it before and had to check it out. The lady inside was super friendly. She explained that they moved from pahoa to town and just opened in december.. She also explained that it's ALL local and if people want to sell items it HAS to be 2/3s of local product!! How great! A place for local farmers and us to shop! It's a bit pricy but if it helps the money stay here it's totally worth it! Definitely going back!!
google avatar

Douglas D.

Yelp
A nice little shop on the wee north end of the bay front shopping center. Everything is nicely displayed. A great place for finding locally sourced coffee and chocolate. I'm always going in there to pick up the locally crafted dried ahi or marlin from the fridge. If you're going to seek out gifts to delight your mainland friends then this is the place to shop. The ahi and marlin ships well as there are preserved in their natural preparation. Like I said, nicely displayed locally sourced coffee and chocolate. The fresh fruit is perfect, with interesting and unusual varieties to choose from. Don't forget your discount card!

Beyo T.

Yelp
I love coming to Locavore for their super high quality local produce; especially their fruit selection. Often it's a gamble trying to buy local tropical fruits from the farmers market because it may have been picked prematurely or come from a low-quality seedling tree (or sometimes not actually be local,) but everything I've bought from locavore ripens properly and tastes great.
google avatar

Derick F.

Yelp
TL;DR: Great place to get local Food Service: Friendly, and helpful. Catarina was able to give some good recommendations on things to check out. Food/Products: All products here are made locally. If you're one of those people that like to get unique products as omiyage for your friends and family then this is your store (Sorry No Costco Hawaiian Host products). Or if you like cooking and want to get fresh local products then I'd recommend you shop here. They have a local Hawaiian fine crystal honey that is really Good.
google avatar

Valerie C.

Yelp
THE BEST STORE IN DT HILO. The owner is extremely friendly and informed, don't hesitate to ask questions. This store has it all. I love the idea of an all local grocery store. But they have much more than just groceries, they also have locally made jewelry, lotions, and clothing. My favorites were definitely ice cream bean and sweet potato chips. If you are a traveler, go here instead of the big supermarkets!

M K Ruth F.

Yelp
A clean, friendly, knowledgeable shop that supports the community. They have amazing produce, great local artists, and the best coconut water in town. The staff and owners create a safe environment for shopping by enforcing the state mask mandate and keeping the store clean. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Layla L.

Yelp
Wow, can I just say WOW! I love this store. Very affordable, always trustworthy. I love the people and I love always finding something new and inspiring. My only request would be a loyalty program implemented so that I can stay in touch with sales and take advantage of discounts. Around the area a lot of business are starting to merge to a loyalty program called FiveStars. Big Island Juice Co, Aloha Pawz, Hilo Sharks Coffee...and I love that I get notifications of discounts and sales right to my phone. I don't always stay connected to social media so keeping in touch with business is hard for me unless they reach out to me. I would love to so the Locavore Store implement this program.
google avatar

Katie G.

Yelp
This shop is super cute and full of exotic fruit (if you're from the mainland that is!). We bought two types of mango, the vegan ice cream, banana bread with poi and mac nuts, and honey comb. All delicious! The ship itself is adorable and the staff is friendly. A+!
google avatar

Kirsten V.

Yelp
Got Noni juice? Locavore does!!! Local and organic fruits, veggies and beautifully selected body products all artfully displayed. Love the vibe and environment!! Rambutan!
google avatar

Tomas L.

Yelp
If you want Hawaiian local food products- this is place. I was searching for Breadfruit products and this place held some hidden gems. Lots of interesting and unique products to be found here. Staff is passionate about what they and the products they carry. Definitely worth a visit! ... And another visit because you will always find a new treasure
google avatar

Alexandra A.

Yelp
I miss this store! When I lived in Hilo, I shopped here a couple times every week. It's THE place to get locally sourced products as well as to feel valued as a customer. The owners and staff are a reflection of what community and service mean. Definitely stop by when in Hilo!

Rae Z.

Yelp
I love the Locavore Store and feel like it's such a valuable resource downtown. While I can't shop here for all my groceries, it's perfect for when I need a few things to make a meal. We prefer organic and local ingredients, and that's all Locavore carries! For such a small store you can find a surprising variety--bread and rolls, goat cheeses, grassfed beef, ice cream (the BEST ice cream!) as well as whatever produce items are in season. There is also a nice selection of locally made gift items, honeys and coffees. This shop is a perfect stop for both the tourist who wants to see what Hawai'i has to offer and the resident who want to support local farmers. Thank you!

Jaclyn G.

Yelp
Awesome shop! Amazing selection for such a small shop - choice produce and meats as well as the most delicious chocolate covered macadamia nuts. Also has cute jewelry, cards, skin care products, honey, spices, etc. Also happy to see there is an online shop so I can order when I'm back home. Great and knowledgeable service as well. Happy to find this place on our trip (came 3 times in a week!)
google avatar

George B.

Yelp
I flippen love this shop! My wife gets most of our produce here. Seriously great people too, super friendly and easy to talk to. It's a small little store, but have quality items at great prices. Their grass fed beef is also the best in town.
google avatar

Bon S.

Yelp
I stop here on my way home from work about once a week. Love bringing home little surprises. They typically have stuff that the farmers market doesn't have, though they are seasonal or have what's available. The prices are fair for the quality and the fact that everything is locally grown or produced. Great avocados.
google avatar

Judi M.

Yelp
I love that Locavore encourages us all to eat more consciously-choose locally grown & produced items and it's not any more expensive than other stores. The staff is consistently helpful. displays are really attractive. Check it out! Mahalo!
google avatar

Alicia F.

Yelp
Very nice selection of local products. Perfect place as a must go to when in Hilo. I love the produce art and spices.
google avatar

Adam D.

Yelp
I love this place just for all the vast varieties of local food. The staff is super friendly. Looks like we've finally found a place to buy all of our fresh produce
google avatar

Hope M.

Yelp
I came to visit to see what this store had. I was greeted and welcomed very warmly as I entered the store. There was a variety of things to choose from. I think I came on the wrong day because there was not much produce displayed. When asking questions to the cashier she was very friendly and very helpful. Overall it was a nice experience.

Arminda W.

Yelp
Super awesome REALLY high quality, and many times BETTER prices than the health food store or farmers market. Love this store! The owners do an AMAZING job at quality control and it feels so good to be supporting local farmers and artisans. Can't say enough about this place and so grateful we have an outlet like this on the Big Island. Truly a service to the community and visitors alike!!

Melissa S.

Yelp
I am a regular shopper here. I live in Hilo and am a mom. I really like the concept of the store. Locavore = Eat Local Food. I really believe in this philosophy since the Hawaiian Islands could produce the vast majority of the food for its local residents if there was the market for it. So I purposely shop here so that there is a market for it! I used to go to the Hilo Farmers Market on Wednesdays and Sundays but a lot of my favorite farmer vendors stopped selling there altogether or not as regularly so now I use this store as my farmers market. It's much more convenient for me also since this shop is open during regular business hours and I can go with my toddler in his stroller and don't have to fight the crowds at the farmers market. My favorite things to buy here are local produce (cucumbers, tomatoes, broccoli, sprouts, spinach) since these items are nearly always in stock. On occasion my toddler convinces me to buy the locally grown fresh strawberries. I also get whole locally grown frozen chickens here. Its the best quality chicken around. They often also have frozen local lamb in stock so I get that for special occasions. My toddler who is allergic to milk loves the locally made coconut based chocolate sea salt ice cream. They've got many other flavors as well. They also have locally made gluten free and regular wheat crust pizza that I like to get sometimes when I don't want to cook. The owners are very friendly and welcoming. I've also stocked up here on omiyagi gifts to bring to relatives on Oahu when we visit such as the coconut green tea, local honey and jam. This place is great for both locals who want to grocery shop or for visitors who want to get local fruit and gifts.
